Why Is Angry Birds So Damn Popular?

PCMag: Angry Birds, the two-year old gaming app from developer Rovio, has been downloaded more than 300 million times to date and is on track to reaching its one billion downloads, according to Rovio CEO Peter Vesterback. The franchise has turned Rovio into a reported $1 billion company (on par with JetBlue).

it could be they are simple pick up and play games anyone can play.

Sunhammer4616d ago

$1 + marketing. That's all.

jeseth4616d ago

Free, charming (for about 3 levels), and Free.

I've tried playing this game and honestly I can't see what the BIG DEAL is with it. I find it absolutely overrated and overhyped. Got bored after 4 minutes of flicking birds across the small screen.

People (like those annoying Apple fanboys) will claim this as the Holy Grail of gaming, the pinnacle of what all other games should be like, and will continue to believe this while refusing anything reasonable you have to say. Hell, I say there are thousands of PSP titles (or even NES ones) that are so much better than Angry Birds.

Also Rovio the company who made this game, are honestly a bit in over their heads. They created a game, put it on the iOS platform and Apple's base ate it like the world was coming to and end.

They hit big so they considered themselves to be in the league of big boys now then started saying stuff like how consoles are a dying breed. Hell they even went as far as to say that they believe that their company (if it were to be sold) would be worth not millions, but a few BILLIONS!

I got was the chillingo one and now it is obsolete. Shame they have not let those who bought it get the newer updated version for free.

The game is too simple for most which is probably why they hate on it so. Yet if you just let go of the complexity of things and just relax and fling birds it can be quite entertaining.

It needs to be on more platforms like the dsi was supposed to get a version I think would have done great with the stylus. I found a version that was ported to java based phones and even thought it is far from perfect (or anywhere close to similar) it is still somewhat fun and challenging on my phone due to its performance.

It's free, it's fun, and it's a good time burner. I often times boot it up when I'm waiting or between class as it's easy to pick up and play.

ShaunCameron4616d ago

I actually enjoyed that game. Too bad that was the only handheld console game I ever played.

supergameboy4616d ago

Simple concept. Sharp graphics. Addictive gameplay.

People love to hate what's popular.

theonlylolking4616d ago

Angry birds bored me after the 7th level. I kept playing until like the 20th but it just was the same thing over and over again.

f7897904616d ago

Exactly. It's a fun concept but playing it through the 100's of levels sounds like torture.

SuperStrokey11234616d ago

Well for 99 cents (what i paid for it) the amount of content is pretty impressive...

Psychotica4616d ago

Because you don't have to read the forums or browse the web to figure out how to play it.

Jack_DangerousIy4616d ago

Hah! Yeah that probably helps. :)

Captain Qwark 94616d ago

good game for the price, simple as that. one of the better phone games......

Sega Nears Deal For ‘Angry Birds’ Mobile Game Maker

The Japan-based entertainment conglomerate is expected to pay about $1 billion for Rovio Entertainment.

sparky77384d ago

If you want to remain relevant you need a mobile powerhouse. MS got Minecraft, maybe King soon, T2 got Zynga, EA got Glu, Tencent got most of the other big ones.

Sony is likely looking for one too or they will be left behind.

Vengeance1138383d ago

Sony already owns the #2 highest grossing mobile game ever in Fate/Grand Order.
That game is close to Genshin Impact levels of monthly revenue.

Lifexline384d ago

Well angry birds still makes money so it’s not a dead horse. They just need another hit.

darthv72384d ago

Angry Sonic, Angry Tails, Angry Amy, Angry Knuckles, Angry Chaos....

Lifexline384d ago

Lol yeah you would be surprised at what could sell. I could see it.

porkChop383d ago

Angry Taxi might actually work.

blackblades384d ago (Edited 384d ago )

Looks like something MS would grab. I wont be surprised some how ms gets Sega with this included magically.

-Foxtrot383d ago

We could fund more games like Sonic Mania

We could buy the music rights back to Sonic 3

We could reboot some old franchises like Ristar, Shinobi, Gunstar Heroes or Golden Axe

...Nah. Angry Birds it is

Snookies12384d ago

Wait, have they even made anything since then? Thought they were a one-hit wonder lol.

darthv72384d ago

I didn't know they did a bunch of stuff prior to Angry Birds:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wi...

Pretty much everything since has been a spin off. Now maybe Sega will make Angry Chaos or something similar.

FallenAngel1984384d ago

Mojang only made one game and Microsoft still purchased them for $4 billion

Sometimes one property is all you need especially when it’s lucrative

MadLad384d ago

Angry Birds fell out of relevance years ago, but whatever they want to do lol.

Angry Birds Popularity Means its Culling on Android

Rovio has released a statment saying that Angry Birds popularity means its culling on Android after Thursday 23rd Feb 2023.

IanTH435d ago (Edited 435d ago )

Hilarious they see what the market wants, and instead of making more things like that, kills it and is trying to funnel people towards a worse prodcut because GaaS trash makes them more money. Why did they even remake the game and sell it for a buck in the first place then?! The version they're killing hasn't even been out a year.

Also, completely removing from Google Play, but renaming on Apple? Why removing on one and keeping on the other?

Inverno435d ago

People like the simplicity of paying once for a product and never having to give any more, or worry about the intrusion of ads, mtx, subscriptions. Who would've thought? lol.
I imagine that renaming it would make people think it's a knckoff and push them towards their other games. On Android most likely people will just download an APK.

XxINFERNUSxX435d ago

This is why I love Android. You can go to a site like apk mirror and download the apk cracked and install it. Also you can torrent hundreds of Android games so easily. They can pull anything they want off the store I wouldn't care less 🤣

DarkkMinion434d ago

This is why mobile games need to die once and for all. These companies are hilarious. I understand they need to make money but this is just an insult.
