IGN: PlayStation 3 Wireless Stereo Headset Review

In May, Sony quietly announced the Wireless Stereo Headset, a new completely wireless simulated 7.1 surround sound audio solution for the PlayStation 3. While there are plenty of alternatives from Turtle Beach, Astro Gaming, Tritton, and others on the market, the Wireless Stereo Headset is the first product officially developed by Sony, and what's more, its one of the few to hit retail for less than $100.

"Still, there are two obviously weak points users should be aware of: the ear cups and the extendable mic."

http://youtu.be/PSP620t1pVQ...

@5:23

watch this video and you tell me if the build quality looks flimsy. incompetent reviewer has no idea what the hell he's talking about.

DarkTower8054618d ago (Edited 4618d ago )

Yeah, I don't get how he talks about the durability by looking at it. This isn't 1954, polymers nowadays are very strong and durable as hell.

@ JoGam, me too ; )

FlameBaitGod4618d ago

I have turtle beach p20's and they look like cheap crap but i have had them for almost 2 years and they still solid

PRHB HYBRiiD4617d ago (Edited 4617d ago )

i have the px21 and they are very well made indeed the only two problems i have is that more than 2 hours my ears hurt and when i change the intensity of the volume it makes a weird noise but its only when im changing the volume during gameplay it works perfect and for 65$ it was a great buy :)

LOGICWINS4618d ago

So I should trust the opinion of a person who hasn't tried these headphones out yet(you) as opposed to a person who has(IGN)?

Baka-akaB4618d ago

why even trust an ign review about hifi material to begin with ?

I mean i'd rather get an opinion from a specialised site over a random , even if popular , movie/comics/games/tv series review site

DarkTower8054618d ago

I didn't give a review, only my personal opinion. And do you question that polymers now are stronger than in 1954? But here is a fact for you:

du·ra·ble (d r -b l, dy r -) adj. 1. Capable of withstanding wear and tear or decay: a durable fabric.
2. Able to perform or compete over a long per as by avoiding or overcoming injuries: a durable fullback.

How can you comment on durability by having a product a day or two, especially when during that timespan it never broke? Again, as with most of your comments, logic has eluded you.

WrAiTh Sp3cTr34618d ago

Why even conversate with people when all they do is get hostile over someone else's opinion? I damn sure wouldn't ask any one of you about the product since you haven't touched it.

I have mine and they work very well with my PS3 and PC. The mic when it extends is kind of loose, but you are not really going to be messing with it much since there is little reason to extend it. My friends can hear me when it's not extended and the ear cups is awesome. They fit nicely and I can hear a lot from them. They are loud but also not that loud that it will wake up anyone that is in the same room as you.

I use it on both my PS3 and PC. Great distance, I can head to the bathroom, kitchen and living room with little to no issues.

I give it a 9. Sound Quality is top notch. I was playing Resistance 3 last night and Dead Island as well this morning and those work well with it. I can't wait to try them with BF3, MW3, Skyrim, NFS:TF. It's not limited to those. I'm also very happy that I can use the headset while playing offline as well as online.

EDIT: At below. There is no such thing as a perfect product even if it does everything you need it to do. There will also be a fault at some point. I didn't give it a ten because I did get some sound issues when I went a short distance away. The dongle USB piece interferes with my USB ports, so that means I need to buy an extra piece to use on my PS3 to get more ports. While those are not major issues, since they can bo corrected and how many times am I really going to be that far from the UNIt I'm using the Headset with.

I also only had it for less then 24 hours, so to say I can give it a perfect score before running it through a series of test will be like lying to sell a product.

WrAiTh Sp3cTr34618d ago (Edited 4618d ago )

Why not a 10?

Edit: Thanks for stating your reasons, although I don't look at a 10 being perfect: it's just a scale; but a 10 would mean no matter what you do, you have to experience whatever gets a 10.

cyborg69714618d ago (Edited 4618d ago )

He's full of it. He says everything is likely to break. Well no shit. Everything is after wear and tear.

Maybe I missed it but did he even compare these to any other one when it comes to sound?

At god above thanks for the hands-on.

Godchild10204618d ago (Edited 4618d ago )

I also want to add that you can still use them while they are charging. Mines died and I plugged them into my laptop and they worked while it was plugged in. The light on the mic turns red. Blue when it's on.

There is no USB cable that comes with it, but it charges from any USB that you have. Even the charger that comes with the Blackberry.

I also don't know how well they work with people who wear glasses but the ear cups have some soft pads that might help.

RioKing4618d ago (Edited 4618d ago )

yeah I wear glasses if I'm far away, it'll be interesting to see how everything fits.

ThanatosDMC4618d ago

He could be one of those Turtle Beach or Tritton fanboys that do not want to try a cheaper alternative to those overpriced heavy headsets.

WrAiTh Sp3cTr34618d ago (Edited 4618d ago )

Those are all good brands and they are highly regarded for a reason. I think these Sony pair look nice, but if they don't compare to the other brands in the same price range then that should be pointed out. With that said, I wouldn't be able to base my purchasing decision on this review. He pointed out a couple of deal breakers, IMO, at that price point, then at the end he says they're definitely worth the money. That's just too confusing for me, although I would use this review as a basis before I used that of some of these people who haven't laid their hands on them yet.

STONEY44617d ago

Once you hit past $100, their entire range becomes obviously overpriced. I use Audio Technica AD 700s and Sennheiser HD 595s with a separate mic and an Astro Mixamp. Blows every higher end Turtle Beach I've heard, plus they're actual hi-fi music headphones at the same time. HUGE soundstage.

ThanatosDMC4617d ago

I've bought two px21s. One of them lasted less than a year and the other one right now ear muff or whatever you call it is peeling off.

Did he really give the audio quality a 7? Or a 7.5? I didn't pay attention to the closing score all too much. All I know is I paid $65 with free shipping and it will be here Saturday, so I don't see myself complaining.

WrAiTh Sp3cTr34618d ago

A 7 is what the written review says. Stating that the surround sound wasn't that good and in the article he says the sound bleeds out. I can see how people don't like this review, after reading it, I'm some what confused.

DaMist4618d ago

hey solidsnake, where did you get it for $65?

Blacktric4618d ago

From Amazon US. They've had a deal a couple of weeks back. 65 dollars + free shipping.

RioKing4618d ago (Edited 4618d ago )

^This. It was their top per-ordered item for a few days because of that deal.

Hell, I had to get it at that price....and I'm Jewish!

solidsnake2224618d ago

Yep, Amazon had a great deal. I still wonder if it was a mistake. If your in the market, I hear overstock.com has it for 78.

dorron4617d ago

Will this work with other devices apart from PS3? Will it be futurre proof with PS4, etc?

Blacktric4617d ago

It works with PC's and Mac's. It might also work with PS4 but I wouldn't worry for it too much. If this sells well, they'll probably release one for PS4 too that has much more advanced tech in it. And since the PS4 probably won't get released for another 2 years, it should be fine.

Brownghost4617d ago

$65 is still a good deal these idiots dont know anything and expect so much from a $100 headset

I have one of these and it is highly recommended. Great sound, you'll hear things you've never heard in a game you've played for hours on end.

HarryMasonHerpderp4449d ago

Really want one of these but there too expensive in the UK.

Emilio_Estevez4449d ago

They run about $100 here in the US, but it is well worth it. Try to buy online, I got mine for $80 a while back.

RBdrift4449d ago (Edited 4449d ago )

I got mine for $65 on amazon with free 2 day shipping. Now there back up for $87.

Ddouble4448d ago

I just imported mine from canada. They cost 64 pounds and I didn't have to pay any customs.

Baka-akaB4449d ago

Got one too , and it's easily one of the best and for a fair price . But i dunno if giving it 10/10 is a favor .

Sound is great for the price , but not perfect . ANd there are a few design flaws that could annoy folks . The mic can't be entirely hidden so when using the headset , especially in the dark , you can notice from the corner of the eye , the blue led being ON .

I dont care but i've seen people being driven "nuts" by it .

Also there have been a few audio glitches caused by the most recent firmware updates

akaFullMetal4449d ago

Great headset, they sound great and not only can you use it for games and movies but you can use this headset with mac and pc. What isn't there to love about this headset.

ExPresident4449d ago

Sold my Turtle Beach PX21's and bought these a couple months ago. Wish I would have made that choice A LONG TIME AGO. Highly recommend this Sony headset, its amazing!

RBdrift4449d ago

I have these same headphones and I love them. I only wish they had slightly better bass, but besides that there the best in its price range.

The stereo headset is def worth it at 50. I bought it at 100 and its worth it to me. I might get another one for my girl.

remanutd554507d ago (Edited 4507d ago )

its only 10 % off , $89.99

edit: at kulex47 target has them at $79.99

kulex474507d ago

That's what I've been seeing at EVERY retailer as well so far. I want my $50 headset...

Anon19744507d ago

That's what I'm seeing too. My wife bought me one for Christmas, but everyone's sale prices are only $10 off, $89.99.

Larry L4507d ago

Well the sale starts today, so if you got it for Christmas you wouldn't get that price since it was bought before. Or, if you went and bought it today for $80, bring it back and tell them to give you your $30 back.

For me, I'm going to take advantage of this deal tonight or tomorrow. I've been dying to get a good wireless USB headset since the PS2 days but they were always too expensive. I'll be damned before I pay $100 for a headset. I wouldn't even pay 80 or 70. Probably not even 60. I buy stuff I want but I'm also broke and therefore have to be a cheap arse. But $50 for one of the best wireless USB headsets you can get? Yeah, even I'll pay that.

Quick question for anyone who already has this headset. Does the game's audio go through the headset straight from the USB? Or do I have to use the old PS2 style connector to plug in through those RCA jacks and enable the dual adio function?

GrandTheftZamboni4507d ago

@Larry L

You just plug in a USB dongle that is actually a blue tooth radio which sends audio directly to the headphones. It took me 20 minutes to figure out how to turn them on (I should have read the manual:). You need to hold the top of the left panel on the headphones for couple of seconds. There are three dots that you can feel in the dark. Same to turn them off.

DFogz4507d ago

@Anyone looking for the $50 pairs, try your local stores instead of online. GameStop near me had them at $50

Insomnia_844506d ago

@theGrandTheftZamboni
LOL same thing happened to me! I was going to return it because thought it was broken lmao ...THEN I READ THE MANUAL.

Larry L4506d ago

I went to Gamestop, Best Buy and Target and couldn't get this deal at any of them. They all said it's $89.99. So IDK what's going on with this supposed deal. Every store all pointed that the Play Days sign and said $89.99 please. So I passed. I guess I'm out of luck unless I can bring in an advertisment saying $50.

$50 is a steal. I got mine for $65 when Amazon had them on sale, use then all the time.

ReservoirDog3164507d ago

Haha, yeah I got them when they were $65 from amazon too. They're so worth it. Use them every night.

jwk944507d ago (Edited 4507d ago )

I got mine from GameStop for $50 guys, i'll upload the receipt as proof.

EDIT: Receipt uploaded

showtimefolks4507d ago

when i click on gamestop it still shows 89.99 what gives?

my brother is picking me up one as a late xmas gift lol.

JoeReno4507d ago

Great deals, too bad I bought all this stuff already.

LeXxXiNgToN4507d ago

So is the headset 49.99 or not? all the online stores have it listed at 89.99+ as of right now.

kingPoS4507d ago (Edited 4507d ago )

If it was a value at $99 it's a steal at $50. I use them a lot on my pc & ps3. It even works on win XP with simple plug & play.

If you hate to see wires dangling about, get this sony wireless headset then. The range seemed (to me) in excess of 30 feet despite WIFI & 6ghz cordless phones.

The sound quality even made me put down my skull candy titan's (nylon ver) and are very comfortible.

gametaroo! - PS3 Wireless Stereo Headset - Review

gametaroo! writes:

Ever since it was first released, the PlayStation 3 has faced criticism for the inconsistency with which players use voice-comms when playing online. The console has never come with an in-box mic, and although it supports all manner of bluetooth devices, you can never be sure of how much chat you will be faced with from game to game, session to session. Though the launch of the PlayStation Wireless Stereo Headset alone is unlikely to buck this trend, if you’re looking for a nicely packaged headphone and microphone combination, this may well be the product for you.

Excellent, unbiased review. I've been in the market for a headset such as this for a while and have been on the fence about getting this one given it suited my price range and expectations. Having read this review, it's clear it suits my needs.

LakerGamerEnthusiast4533d ago

Hey scotty, Ive been on the fence as well on getting this or the trittons ax 720's, but im undecided on which 1, what would you recommend me? or any1 else that reads this? which is better for the price thanks.

srry i double posted, but this was a reply for u

Scottyabanks4533d ago (Edited 4533d ago )

My friend whom I occasionally game with owns a pair of the tritton ax 720s and he says its the best headset hes bought having previously owned a turtle beach, not sure what model though. Ive been told by many people that the quality of a tritton cant easily be beaten for the price. I have not owned a pair of trittons however so I cant confirm this personally.

Im going by the standard of you get what you pay for. My brother bought a turtle beach that cost a 99.99 last year and the construction was very flimsy and he ended up having to replace it because the 3.5" jack stopped working after 2 months of taking the cable in and out. But i guess thats the difference between a 99 and a 300$ turtle beach.

The ax 720 is impressive. Ive tried it on briefly and the sound quility is crystal clear and it makes it very easy to understand what your teamates are playing. However I felt it was almost a little too sharp because the base was a little underwhelming and higher pitched sounds felt too high making it seem unbalanced and causing you to lower the volume to keep from hurting your ears. It appears that the trittons are made better for communication, which can be very integral for those who seriously game with their buddies and need to ensure not one word goes misunderstoood.

The Sonys however with the 7.1 ch. and blutooth tech. will appeal to me more because I play mostly single player and I want to feel immersed within the game itself to have the most enjoyable experience possible. I'm replacing my 6 year old Sony 5.1 ch wired headset which in my opinion is better capable of much deeper tones, and a more enveloping sound than all the headsets I've previously mentioned, so im hoping the new 7.1 sonys will sound even better. The 5.1 however, doesnt have a mic, and i do play a few online games with a couple buddies. So it'll be nice to have it when I need it.

Another thing is the sony headset is made for the ps3 so you can have a sense your tech is being utilized optimally. In the end my price range was 80 to 100 and the Sonys from the research I did are going to offer me exactly what I need to complete my game experience. For 130 bucks, if youre a serious competitive online gamer, the trittons are perfect for multiplayer, whereas the Sonys are going to be better for the single player experience.

Heres something I asked myself, what do you prefer hearing better in a game? People talking, or explosions? Talking= Tritton, explosions= sonys.

Those are my opinions from the knowledge I had at hand, hope it helps.

LakerGamerEnthusiast4533d ago

Wow, thx for the report :D as for what you told me, I found it very knowledgeable,At the end when you told me what you would ask yourself, to me both are kinda important lol, but primarily gonna use them for hearing things I don't in FPS like footsteps and such, as for explosions, I dont think im going to really high pitch them for that ...overall I see myself as a competitive online gamer so I guess Ima have 2 go with the trittons, thx for the reply ! :) much appreciated

LakerGamerEnthusiast4533d ago

Hey scotty, Ive been on the fence as well on getting this or the trittons ax 720's, but im undecided on which 1, what would you recommend me? or any1 else that reads this? which is better for the price thanks.

kyle55754533d ago

Picked these up when Amazon had them for around 60. I love these headphones. The review sums it's up perfectly. Comfortable and in my opinion the sound is great. Battlefield 3 is epic with these.

rickhunter894533d ago

kikizoo4533d ago
