Last year was a better year for Xbox 360 gamers like myself. PS3 was still the winner, but right now we haven't had any exclusives at all and that's what I hate about Microsoft. I want them to give me high quality exclusives just like Sony does. Just look at their line up this year, that's incredible as for the last couple of years. I love my Xbox for Gears of War, Alan Wake & Halo, but I love my PS3 for all the exclusives it offers me and that's a lot.

Gears of War 3 is going to be a MONSTER at retail.

In fact, you can quote ME Gears of War's midnight release will have the largest in-stores outside of a small game called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Gears will easily be the number one selling exclusive this year and the number 2 selling 360 game overall.

It's first weekend will outsell every game's total sales that have been released thus far in 2011.

The ONLY reason you don't hear about Gears is because we had to wait almost 6 months after it originally was going to be released.

Micrsoft was smart to release Gears in the vaunted Halo slot, because NOTHING is going to come close to hurting it's sales.

Battlefield 3 is in competition with only one title and 2 weeks after it is released reality is going to kick in for that game as well (no matter how good the buzz is).

We ALL know how packed this fall is going to be for great games per capita...but out of all of the exclusives on ANY system..Gears is not the one that going to suffer.

Gears won't do Halo Reach numbers but Micrsoft is definately giving the game the perfect release date for it to succeed and that is all you can ask.

Borderlands as a new IP launched right before COD and did quite well despite every media critic and sales critic calling it a death wish

and uncharted 2 came right after COD and did fine

my point being games like UC and Gears have fan bases in millions who will buy it no matter what. And Gears3 is MS's biggest and only big hitter of 2011 so they will advertise the crap out of it

If I bought all the games this Holiday season that I wanted, I'd be about $1000 short--probably broke. I'll be buying games I think will succeed, and games I can wait for--like games without strong multiplayer communities--I'll buy after Winter.

I believe you are not thinking. Gears is great and it has its own loyal fanbase but your not looking at the bigger picture. Gears is up against major released of COD, BF3. A lot (I am not one of them though) have two consoles this generation so resistance 3 is competition. He is not saying Gears will not do well but not as well as hoped (initially). IMO it will be the same for Uncharted 3. The loyal fans will get it but sales will not be as much as if it was released a few months later because of major competition.

Every game is affected by the September-November release time because of games like COD and BF3. Your are just thinking of the core fan base who do not budge. The thing is though, Gears comes out before ALL of those titles. Hell, besides Dead Island there isn't really anything coming out until October so that's a perfect reason for 360 gamers to pick it up in September. If Gears 3 was released in October-November then the author may have a point.

COD and BF have nothing to do with Gears, they're two separate genres. If people want a FPS they have a choice between those two, if people want a TPS they have no choice what so ever unless they own both consoles. That's like saying Forza won't sell well because it releases in October. Which isn't true because it's in a class of it's own genre with no competition.

Resistance 3 - Not even in the top 20, so less than 120,000

Gears 2 sold 3x the amount of Resistance 2. To think Resistance 3 will even come close to Gears number is laughable.

Gears 3 has the most pre-orders it has ever had, it sits at the top of the chart amid all the competition, had a huge beta despite all the requirements, gamers seemed to universally praise it during the beta, and pre-orders haven't stopped since the beta.

This is the biggest Gears game ever shipped in terms of feature, content and polish.

40K Space marine comes out in september too. Maybe it's not quite on the same level of demand and hype as DE:HR, and Dead Island but it still looks polished and fun and a little bit challenging.

It also has some superficial TPS similarities to Gears though it takes things in a slightly more God of War/Dynasty Warriors sort of direction encouraging execution moves and smashing waves of enemies before you proceed instead of blind firing around cover and charging in after a grenade goes off like in Gears.

I believe Killzone 2 had 3 million+ pre orders but the actual number of sold units around launch were FAR below the said number of pre orders. Good game, but it doesnt matter...

I only care to some degree, it really doesnt matter much if a game sells 4 or 10 million copies to me.
As long as the dev behind it can carry on to make games I will love I dont give a damn.

I remember the Killzone 2 preorder ruse. That 'fake' rumor that Europe had over a million preorders got reported and every 'fan blogger' site ran with it.

At the end of the day, Europe bought less than 400,000 when the game launched, exposing the reality.

The funny part is you NEVER heard about Europe gaming preorders before and you have never heard about em' since.

Gears on the other hand will definately match and exceed the projected preorders by the first weekend.

My belief is that while gears might not pull off halo or call of duty numbers. It will still sell over 2 million copies in the first month alone and those are pretty good numbers. If theres one game that will dissapoint with sales its the Halo remake. I think that the game will not sell as many copies as the other halos because a ton of people have already played it.

"Gears of War fans will tell you that plenty has changed since Gears of War 2 … but seriously?" - Is this guy serious? What was he expecting, a Gears Of War kart game? A GOW football game? People who slag Gears by saying this, and I've seen a few, are retarded. Seriously. As he mentions, there are new executions, levels and weapons, as well as dedicated servers, upgraded modes of play in Horde 2.0 and Beast mode, and best of all, 4 player co-op. All this adds up to a superb package.

So what's new in the competition he mentions that makes them completely different to their previous installments? Not much by the looks of things, besides modes being added that are already in other games anyway. By the authors logic every game ever released from now on will be crap because it resembles a game that came before it.

"and the story, which sucked in the two previous games" - I would have agreed with him until I played through Killzone 2 & 3 recently, now these games have absolutely no story whatsoever and I never see these games being slagged. By comparison, they made Gears' story seem like A Song For Ice And Fire.
Stories in games aren't exactly the main draw anyway, sure Uncharted 2 had a good enough story, but it had absolutely nothing to come back to once you finished it. That game lasted me 2 days before I gave it back to my brother and I'd imagine part 3, going by my experiences with the Beta, will be a rental.

So in summary, butt-hurt author has a good cry for himself with no real points to back up his whinging. I'd say he likes the sausage alright.

What an awful article, did he do ANY research? This author must have missed the interview where it was confirmed that Gears 3 is the most pre-ordered exclusive in 360 history. Yeah, sure, that definitely leads to poor sales. The beta alone turned people around as it had a Gears 1 feel. The game went back to its roots and the beta confirmed it. Most pathetic article ever. Gears of War 3 will be the most sold exclusive this year and the second most on 360. It already had 1.4 million pre-orders in America alone. It really has hardly any competition in September. Resistance 3 won't hold a candle to Gears 3. What a joke. Gears 3 will sale over 2 million on day one easily. And just like Gears 1 and Gears 2, it will be able to sale 6 million again. It also has chance of getting GoTY and best graphics of the year. The quality is 10x better than Call of Duty. I haven't played the Beta for it but everyone was telling me it felt revamped, familiar but fresh and new Gears.

As for bigger competition Gears is the competition they're one of the competing forces of this year.

So his "Reasons" don't justify a thing in fact I don't think these guys even know what they're even talking about.

I think that the game will sell plenty.

I also think that the game will be kinda crappy, and for many players will just be collecting dust after a playthrough and a little time in multiplayer, like GoW2 did for me.

I still can't believe I wasted $60 on that.

It will disappoint, but relative to 1 & 2. You cannot compare it to other games directly. It has it's own expectation regardless of other games. Will it outsell R3? Yes, but so? The marketing money and install base for Gears will be 5x R3. R3 will be a sleeper. Not hyped, but word of mouth and reviews will be good. My question is why do people buy COD games and Halo X? I guess it's the same reason people made Avatar and Titanic the top grossing movies.
