GameZone's Joe Donato gives his secret worst thing about modern games. It's not what you think it will probably be.

**Spoiler**

The secret worst thing is gameplay design that advance the story via a cutscene that triggers when you step into a certain area.

This drives me crazy, too.

lifesanrpg4640d ago

Linear gameplay is the worst kind.

How about the fact that all games post the year 2000 finish themselves.

Gone are the days where only the truly good player could finish a game. Every game today (sans Demons' Souls of course) is entirely too easy. Blind half wits can finish them in 10 hours as opposed to 7

marioPSUC4640d ago

theres some games that can be tough, but yeah for the most part you're right. Most games today are incredibly easy, and when you die, you dont have a certain number of lives, you just respawn and retry right where you left off.

I remember when it was a challenge to figure out puzzles in adventure games and having to really figure out how to do something.

I was relieved to see how Demon Souls was, and how Dark Souls is shaping up to be about the same, but harder and more challenging. Glad to see they didnt want to tone down the game to make it more appealing to people who cant play challenging games

MidnytRain4640d ago

I don't mind the game restarting near the part I died. I mean, I've already proven I can beat it; there's no reason to make me do it again.

Wardog13684640d ago

That's because most people play a game to alleviate stress and not to cause it. Personally, I like to play games for their story and the experience as a whole. I never play games on hard just because I don't have the time to devote to it and the reward for beating it on hard is not satisfying to me. Plus most developers are trying to tell story's now. They like giving the players the ability to finish that story.

Lord_Sloth4640d ago

I wouldn't say Post 2000 since many PS2 titles were pretty difficult. Chaos Legion comes to mind.

J86blum4640d ago

The ONLY game I raged out to. but i threw the control and it hit the dog and the dog bit me and i never did it again lol.

Wardog13684640d ago

Sounds like achievement whoring was not the developers intent. But, to me it just seems like a giant skinner box.

mystakin4640d ago

I completely agree, and it does come down to poor game design. Closing doors behind the player is never good, especially if it comes so close to a potentially interesting piece of content.

Kind of a goody story...

On a serious note, that is why I try activating gift cards asap. It's happened to me where the store didnt scan it right where the card was unusuable. Happened at Wally World.

wait, that place is real? national lampoon wasn't kidding?

Tacoboto18d ago

I just bought two of the MonsterVerse Godzilla movies on 4K - both had digital copies expiring in 2023. Both were actually expired.

I'd be surprised but it's WB, of course they'd actually expire them

Knightofelemia19d ago

Usually most of those redemption card have an expiry date on them. If they expired all buyer did was buy recycled paper. And some of those codes are country locked to certain countries. I buy a card from the States I can't use it in Canada.

Dumb and silly story. She wasted her money for no reason.

Is it really that hard to go to Steam or GOG. She spent $240, when its currently 70% off on GOG, and only costs $4.49.

Gee, I wonder, should I spend $240 on eBay, or $4.49 on GOG? 🙄

Rynxie19d ago

Most likely she wanted to resell a few or most of them. However, it was a too good to be true situation.

So in short she paid $240.00 assuming usd for a bunch on unactivated game codes.

I still don't understand why I guess cause there's not a physical version and she wanted something for a collection or art project.

Rynxie19d ago

No, most likely to resell. However, she ended up getting screwed.

Asplundh19d ago

This is Alan Wake 1, it had physical copies.

A thermos is upending the Alan Wake community

Remedy has Alan Wake merch on sale, including a pretty blue thermos. Unfortunately, things haven’t gone according to plan, and many players who want a thermos find themselves without one, though it does appear that Remedy is attempting to fix things. Nevertheless, it has resulted in a lot of upset, illustrating just how much the thermos means to Alan Wake fans.
