The paragraph should read:

For years Harmonix has made the monster hit Guitar Hero. The lone ranger of music games that rules supreme over all music games to date. Never has there been a challenger that has dared step up to the plate to the super power that is the Guitar Hero series. That is until Activision took over and butchered the series, Now we have the TRUE successor to the Guitar Hero series, the Harmonix developed Rock Band.

I mean after all you wouldn't want to see Harmonix trying to make a skateboarding game would you??

Here are a few corrections to your review:
-The Box is 21lbs.
-That picture on page 1 is from GH2,With no mention of why(If it was meant to be there)
-The part where you talk about copyright infringement with the Singstar games on PS2...You know Harmonix also made all of the Karaoke Revolution games with mics for the PS2 don't you?

-Quote "So the truth is, other than adding the drums in, that virtually work the same way as the guitar always has, Rock Band has failed to break any new ground when it comes to basic game play."

........So no mention of The Band World tour? Or how the DLC is integrated back into the single player experience? What about the endless setlist where you play the songs like a full 3 hour concert?? Or yet another omission, How bout the Create a Character mode or the intense customization options?? None of this breaks new ground! It's just GH with drums is a ridiculous statement.

-Quote "The online support is nothing terrific, there are no death matches or capture the flag"

..........WTF does that even mean?!?!(Are we playing Halo or Rock Band) You know that they have the Tug-of-War mode and Score Mode(Which you fail to mention). Plus the ability to have Drum offs online. And Guitar matches online. Hell even Wikipedia has more info than this review.

From Wikipedia: "Tug of War" (much like Guitar Hero's "Face-off," in which players trade playing sections of a song to move a meter in their favor) and "Score Duel" (much like Guitar Hero II's "Pro Face-off," in which each player plays the song in its entirety to earn points). Other multiplayer modes include "Head-to-Head Play" and "Band Quick Play." Also included in Rock Band will be "Tutorial Mode" and "Practice Mode," which will allow players to practice songs for each instrument. For players who want to experience an all-day concert atmosphere, an "Endless Setlist" mode will involve playing the entire setlist from start to finish without having the chance to back out.

-Plus after playing the Demo the Graphics are the best this genre has ever seen, while clearly not deserving of a 10 it is far superior to the freaky looking singer in Guitar Hero and the stiff 2 movement drummer. It is fluid and great looking.

All in all either you skimmed the game or only reviewed it with limited time and research on the demo version. At any rate this is the worst review I've seen and it feels phoned in to say the least.....Hell at least the site is working again that's a WIN.

Where as I feel this review is an automatic FAIL.

Unfortunately, for this review, I am not the writer. Currently on the site, I take all of our journalists work and upload it to our site for viewing. I do agree, there is a lot that could have been added to the article, however, I do stand behind the final verdict. So, I will address each of your criticisms now.

Yes you can create a character and sure you follow the world tour. For the music Genre, these are firsts, but in gaming, this is far from the truth. What Mark was trying to portray is that in terms of adding something new to the gameplay element, not much is there. GH3 allows you to battle on guitar, Rock Band lets you battle on Guitar as well as all other methods. Nice addition, but not revolutionary.

Online play is something that is still in infancy. To be considered truly remarkable, they need to bring something great to the show. If they had allowed for an audience to listen in. That would be new. But just playing online with friends is terrific too, hence the 10 on Game Play.

-Plus after playing the Demo the Graphics are the best this genre has ever seen, while clearly not deserving of a 10 it is far superior to the freaky looking singer in Guitar Hero and the stiff 2 movement drummer. It is fluid and great looking.

We couldn't agree more. The singer in GH3 looks like Steven Tyler had 3 too many Botox treatments. Although character animation is more refined than the GH predecessors, it does not stack up to other games of our day. No matter what the genre is, Games should strive to be pretty like CoD4, God of War ( A last gen game might we add) and others. Rock Band gets some leeway as does GH as these games do not require beauty. Heck for all most gamers care, it could just be the score board and some flashing lights. Although we admit it looks better than GH3, it is still nothing new.

Although I can not vouch directly for our writer, the score stands and Rock Band is a game to test the ages. I appreciate any critiquing you have and encourage you to post it on the articles of our site. This is the only way our staff will know what you are needing out of our site. Thanks for your reply and I hope that you will like our future reviews more than you this one.

PS. The image of Guitar Hero is a mistake and thank you for catching it. I have replaced the image and really appreciate your response. Thanks again!

Syko6035d ago

Well thanks for the response, And that is well counter pointed. I think the only thing that truly pissed me off was the apparent lack of effort and the somewhat Guitar Hero fanboy bias.

I agree that he got the score right, It just felt like a cut and paste or phoned in review.

But still no mention of The Band World Tour is unforgivable.
(Bubbles + for the response though, appreciate it...I am not as pissed about it anymore. lol)

Rock Band Doesn't Need Plastic Instruments to Work

TheGamer Writes "Harmonix has proven plenty of times it can make Rock Band work without instruments."

Christopher512d ago

I mean, yeah, but was anyone saying otherwise? The fact is people liked the plastic instruments rather than pressing buttons on a controller. They enjoyed the simulated experience.

isarai512d ago

"Work"? No, but to be good? It's absolutely necessary. Not having the accessories is like playing a lightgun shooter with an analog stick sure it works, but one experience is completely unique and fun as hell, and other is torture trying to make do playing in a way it was never meant to be played

LucasRuinedChildhood511d ago (Edited 511d ago )

"trying to make do in a way it was never meant to be played"

I disagree. The accessories were a fun gimmick (and very marketable) but they were added AFTER the genre had been well established with games like Frequency and Amplitude (both also made by Harmonix).

The gameplay formula is different on a controller - there's a focus on switching lanes and contributing to all of the instruments.

Never played Frequency, but Amplitude and Rock Band Blitz were really good. I would love to get more of that kind of game. It's basically a different part of the genre, and stands on its own.

isarai511d ago

The insurmountable difference in popularity between Amplitude and Rock Band proves my point

LucasRuinedChildhood511d ago (Edited 511d ago )

Popularity isn't proof of quality. If it was, then Harmonix wouldn't be making music for Fortnite now. lol. Our disagreement wasn't over which one is more popular. Amplitude and Blitz just aren't "torture" to play.

Rock Band 4 and Guitar Hero Live failed to revive their sub-genre, and Rock Band 4 caused Mad Catz to have to file for bankruptcy. Doesn't mean that instrument-based music games are bad.

It does mean that there's too much overhead and risk for anyone to take a gamble on a big budget game that needs instrument accessories now though.

For the genre to thrive, for now, it needs to do so without the instrument accessories. That's just a fact, unfortunately.

VR games like Beat Sabre (a new sub-genre) and traditional music games make more sense and are more viable right now.

LucasRuinedChildhood511d ago (Edited 511d ago )

*"If quality is always proved by popularity, then Harmonix wouldn't be making music for Fortnite now."

Yi-Long511d ago

I think CHEAP plastic instruments is THE reason why the instrument-genre ‘died’.

People invested in buying the game AND the peripherals, so the guitar, the dj-set, the drum, whatever, and the experience was absolutely fantastic. Great fun, great music, etc.

But then the instruments would break. A button would stop working, or your hits wouldn’t register, and that kind of hardware failure would end in you not being able to play the game as intended, and thus you not getting the scores you deserve.

So, now you had a great game, but a broken instrument, and nobody is gonna buy a new plastic instrument every 3-6 months in order to keep playing the game.

A solution would have been to release better quality instruments (obviously), at a slightly higher price, so you could have kept the new games coming and the genre alive, but sadly, that didn’t happen.

dumahim511d ago (Edited 511d ago )

The only issue I ever had with any of the hardware was the drum pedal on the original rock band set stared to crack in half. The reason I, and other friends I know who played, lost interest is they weren't putting out new tracks that we were interested in anymore. I think earlier this year I looked through the releases for the last 2 years or so, and there was maybe 3 songs I would have bought.

slayernz511d ago

Yeah I had this happen too with my drum controller, I ended up attaching a metal strip to it which fixed it up nicely.

sinspirit511d ago

Can it work? Yes. Does it compare? No.

monkey602511d ago

Bust a Groove, Gitaroo Man and Parrapa the Rappa were such good games. Neither needed any extra peripherals

Why the Guitar Hero and Rock Band Series Failed

Music rhythm games dominated the video game market in the mid-2000s. Unfortunately, the genre would fall from grace shortly after finding success.

darthv721464d ago

More like faded away than failed. Failed implies it was new and didnt take off... that is not the case. Rhythm games were hugely popular but the lights dimmed and the show is over.

You would think the current situation would cause a resurgence but im actually seeing more people picking up real instruments and learning to play. My son is one who started out on GH and now he plays real guitar.

toxic-inferno1464d ago

I also got into playing guitar through Guitar Hero and Rock Band. And I know at least three other people who did the same.

Still get Rock Band out a few times a year. I really don't think you can say it failed when they're still bring out DLC every week! They must be making enough money from it to keep the licensing going!

Abnor_Mal1464d ago

Basically the reason the artist Prince did not want his music on those types of games. As he believed it was better for kids to actually learn to play a real instrument than to play with toys that really did not teach how to read music and how to actually play an instrument correctly.

A lot of music now a days is just done on a sound board and the creator has no real clue if the music was put on a sheet in front of them to play. The term musician has taken on a new meaning in recent times.

SpeedDemon1464d ago

I lost interest when they stopped allowing you to use the controller to play with, just couldn't get into playing with the guitar.

TheHan1464d ago

Rock band 4 allows controller. Though I just bought RB4 again so I can replay my favorite music rhythm game.

SpeedDemon1464d ago

I didn't know that. I haven't played a lot of Rock Band, but have a lot of Guitar Hero, I'll definitely check it out.

addictedtochaos1464d ago

Not the sole reason, but over saturation by Activision releasing 5 GH games in one year, charging full price for all of them while only Metallica and GH5 were worth it.

cell9891464d ago

I still play the Metallica edition

Gaming4Life19811464d ago

I dont think these games failed at all. People aren't going to keep buying games and peripherals over and over. All songs need to work on either rockband or guitar hero thru updates. Guitar hero live was actually good but rockband with all its songs and same equipment killed it.

Sophisticated_Chap1464d ago

I'm sure part of the reason they faded away, at least over the long term, was that you couldn't download them digitally.
