Valve Hasn’t Thought About Generating Money from DOTA 2

In a rather frank response during a Gamescom interview with GamingLives, Valve’s Erik Johnson has said the company hasn’t factored money into the equation with DOTA 2 at all. First and foremost, the team has been focused on making the game fun, to get it in the hands of as many folks possible.

seeing how they made a Billion dollars off of Steam last year and are on pace to surpass last years total figures.......Valve just makes games for fun!

Plus all those dam Team Fortress 2 hats pulled in a big payday also!!

malol4661d ago (Edited 4661d ago )

they should sell it cheap (like 10$ top) or just free to play and cash in with tourneys licenses

after all it is DoTA

BeastlyRig4661d ago

Plus hat trading gets you free hats! Valve is awsome.. Were else to play CS:GO but on steam!

grailly4661d ago

It seems like they just make games that people want to play, and hope that'll attract people to steam

Voxelman4661d ago

They must be making serious bank from Steam, that's also probably why we don't have Half-life 3 they have no financial incentive to release it. We should all boycot steam until they release HL3. It may take them 5-10 years to burn though their cash pile tho lol.

Up the gfx then the models are pretty meh.

I'm really disappointed with DOTA 2. The graphics and UI are just...bland and ugly. It looks like Darkspore, but worse. And the matches are very long and slow paced, maps are too big, and don't get me started on the name of the game. Sticking to League of Legends I guess. Silly me for thinking Valve could actually release a decent game. They fail again by releasing another grey, boring, bland, depressing to look at game.

shadowraiden4660d ago

im guessing you havnt played dota then looks very similar(and in a good way) to it.
also games are long hmm i just watched one that lasted 50 mins and i believe the past 10 matches on LOL lasted that if not longer
and this is alpha stage and looks quite clean and polished to me they are concentrating on game mechanics and making the abilities look very nice which i think is most important.
and since when have valve released a bland boring game compared to 99% of other developers valve are the best at producing good all round fun and nice games

How are valve games bland and boring and grey? I mean they look pretty colorful to me... left 4 dead games, team fortress games, half life games, counter strike games, portal... i mean they may practically be mods off halflife... but they all have totally different gameplay elements and are all fun which is what its all about. Also all there games are high selling... its not really a hit or miss with valve.. its always a hit.

Pandamobile4660d ago

Did you seriously call every Source game a Half-Life 2 mod? That's like calling every Unreal 3 game a Gears of War mod.

Kurylo3d4660d ago (Edited 4660d ago )

no its not... unreal 3 is nothing like gears of war.. both very different gameplay... all games from valve are still just the same borrowed code from each other for their fps system.. the fps isnt even changed up... They are mods off each other with some additional gameplay elements, additional weapons, and additional art..

Unreal 3 is a first person shoter where u can do back flips off walls and rocket jump. Gears of war is a game that is third person, cover based, and u cant jump at all. Kinda different dont u think?

Im not saying valve games arent entertaining, but im saying they have the same movement and same controls regaurdless of the title. Its the same code. They just build off their original halflife 2 template. Therefore they are mods. Matter of fact I can name some halflife 2 mods that are way different then any of valves games.

Valve: 'Smurfing Is Not Welcome In Dota', Bans 90,000 Accounts

Valve has spoken out forcefully against smurfing in Dota 2 after banning more than 90,000 accounts - and targeting their owners.

Fist4achin260d ago

Pardon my ignorance for never having played this, but why even have the ability to create multiple guest accounts? It seems if there is only one account per player then it would eliminate this smurfing issue.

sadraiden260d ago

Probably to get new players hooked on the addictive gameplay loop, more people playing = statistically more people buying battle passes.

Fist4achin260d ago

Makes sense and cents for Valve. Thanks

franwex260d ago (Edited 260d ago )

Why would seasoned players want to play with lower skill players anyway? Just to owned them? They’re n00bs, what’s the fun in that?

It’s like on COD where they do bad on purpose for a few rounds, to then be place with with bad players to then dominate.

SegaSaturn669260d ago

This is human nature. I know people who do this in Dota2, CoD and other multiplayer games. They enjoy the dopamine rush that winning generates.
