Kotaku: "You've Seen One Resistance You've Seen Them All"

VelocityGamer writes: Well, that quote was a little perturbing to Resistance fans wasn't it? In an article that simultaneously praises the Vita and dogs the Resistance series, Kotaku is on record saying this about Resistance: Burning Skies:

"While there wasn't much of note from the game itself - no offense to the developers, but you've seen one Resistance you've seen them all..."

Really guys? Isn't that the kind of thing that should be said about certain other FPS games that release every year?

Well, as much as this does bleed into my article about very early and unfounded hate by the media, it isn't my intention here to disparage the publication in question. They are entitled to their opinion. What is really up for review here is whether or not this is the consensus on the Resistance series and if so, is that why it isn't as popular as other shooters? Allow me to disabuse you.

"You've Seen One Resistance You've Seen Them All"

Is that good?

SilentNegotiator4647d ago (Edited 4647d ago )

No, that's BS.

I don't care if people didn't like R2 as much as 1; R2 added an awesome MP, especially the coop, and the campaign was hardly bad.

I just hope R3 and Burning Skies expands on the multiplayer (especially cooperative), while taking the best of both games for the SP. R3 definitely looks to have some cool new weapons to play around with, and have effects on other weapons and their special abilities.

Tornado of burning Chimera capped off with a shotgun to the nards. Awesome.

SilentNegotiator4647d ago

LOL, "isn't popular" and "niche" - Yeah, okay, troll; the main series has only sold 6 million across 2 titles and scored averages of 86 and 87.

TBM4646d ago

I see it like this in R1 the chimera were already smacking around europe hence the gritty dark feel, in R2 the americas didn't get to experience the full destructive force the same way as europe right from the off because it took time for the chimera to get there.

Now in R3 your seeing the aftermath of the destruction the chimera dropped on the americas so now the game feels like it did back in part 1.

That's why I love insomniac and these series europe fought them first and got smacked, then they turned their attention to the americas and smacked them also.

FACTUAL evidence4647d ago

Think they are messing up on franchises. Resistance was always different every game.

ginsunuva4647d ago

This is probably the fps series that changes THE MOST from game to game. This is the last game that quote applies to.

firemassacre4647d ago (Edited 4647d ago )

exactly, resistance 1 was dark/gritty sci fi and had that old school survival horror vibe.

resistance 2 had that futuristic, less horror, more sci fi vibe to it.

resistance 3 looks to be more gritty, horrifying and have the old school survival vibe back.

GamerGuy1534647d ago

Agreed. I personally couldn't really get into Resistance 2. But 3, with its cross country horror feel, and the desolation from the Chimera nearing victory has sparked my interest again.

Etseix4647d ago

took my words /
on topic, it was Kotaku ....., sigh* doesn't surprise me anymore.

Kleptic4647d ago

couldn't agree more...

R2 was so different from 1 that fans fired back...the PSP thing was a 3rd person shooter...

just as ginsunuva said...I can't think of one FPS franchise that changed more in a single generation than Resistance...I'm not saying that is a good thing, but it goes a long way to show how ungrounded idiotic internet opinions usually are...

call us when the shuttle lands, Kotaku...

saoco4647d ago

same can be said about many other games. including many up coming AAA games.

legendkilla4647d ago

Yeah that doesn't sound like resistance series... More like call of duty...

P_Bomb4647d ago (Edited 4647d ago )

Perhaps Ted Price didn't send them a large enough fruit basket or good enough Lakers seats with their review copy, heh?

Seriously though, honestly & objectively the Resistance MP changes every game and tries different things in terms of playercounts, co-op, weapons, interfaces, customization. Resistance Retribution even went third-person with cross platform connectivity.

COD on the other hand (as just one random example) has been recycling the same UI, HUD, player caps, perks/killstreaks and even maps (MW2 DLC and the upcoming BO zombie DLC) for years yet most media outlets plead the 5th. Multiplayer dogs keep coming back context be damned yet Resistance, where the good guys lose for a change, gets the poke?

I call shenanigans.

Chnswdchldrn4647d ago

You could easily say that line for a number of other games out there-halo, uncharted, gears, etc

If you like resistance then you will like the sequels to resistance, simple as that along with the other games I mentioned as well

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro60d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv7260d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

_SilverHawk_60d ago

resistance 1-3, killzone 1-3, uncharted 1-3, uncharted golden abyss, folklore, socom 4 , motorstorm, twisted metal, MAG, heavenly sword

Cacabunga60d ago

Killzone 2+3
Sly Thieves in Time
Crack in Time
God of War Ascension
Motorstorm
Modnation racer
Infamous 1+2

Profchaos60d ago (Edited 60d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt2360d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball200060d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

Father__Merrin60d ago

The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer

InUrFoxHole60d ago

The resistance series is str8 trash to me. Socom 3 I would welcome. Or killzone MP.

Marcus Fenix60d ago

A Resistance reboot will be awesome

Michiel198960d ago

That's what Bungie should make, Ill keep saying it until it happens

1Victor60d ago (Edited 60d ago )

Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱

Michiel198960d ago

Resistance was the best co-op fps I ever played after L4D2

Resistance 3 is such a great game. One of my all time bests.

cooperdnizzle679d ago

Couldn’t agree more. Still love It as a shooter to this day.

Just something about that game. I really wish they would just do a remaster, don’t even need a remake just bring it up to todays out put, touch up a few things if any, and I am there to buy it day one.

Of course I would love a remake built from the ground up. As long as they treated it like Shadow of the Colossus, or close to those type of remake. Wouldn’t want it to get the RE treatment…. Just because the game is already paced so perfect and hits all the right beats that I wouldn’t touch that aspect.

My take:

Single player
3, 2, 1

Multiplayer
3, 1, 2

Overall
3, 2, 1

I beat the lengthy single player in 1 multiple times and spent hours in the online too. Plus 1 featured my home town! Special mention to the audio design in 1: playing that with surround headphones blew me away.

Note: I have the platinum for Resistance 2.

Eidolon735d ago

Resistance 1 MP will always be my favorite. Call it nostalgia or whatever, but that was my jam, felt more balance, natural.

Miraak82 735d ago

i have the platinium too , 10k kills in online ranked matches was no joke . Took me 3-4 months straight grinding but it was fun . To put it in perspective you only got like 25 kills per match if you were 1st place every match that's at Least 400 matches in 1st

Sciurus_vulgaris737d ago

I only played the 3 main Resistance titles. My ranking would be;
1. Resistance 3
2. Resistance: Fall of Man
3. Resistance 2

GoodGuy09737d ago

Man I loved 3's campaign. Another gem stuck on the ps3 and who knows if insomniac will go back to the franchise.

fr0sty736d ago

Resistance, Warhawk, MAG, Motorstorm, there's so many first party gems on PS3 that Sony has just left to die...

P_Bomb736d ago

Never played Burning Skies but I still have Retribution.

monkey602736d ago

Burning Skies was about 3 hours long and rather inconsequential. You haven't missed anything

porkChop736d ago

Honestly, Burning Skies was shit. There's no two ways about it. At first I thought it looked terrible, then I second guessed myself. Big mistake.

darthv72735d ago

Retribution has this really cool feature where you could use a PS3 to link a controller to it and play. So if you had a 2000 or 3000 hooked to a tv, you can use a real controller. All of this predates the PSP Go's ability to sync a sixaxis to it via bluetooth.

Yui_Suzumiya736d ago

Resistance 3 was shocking and brilliant. Loved it.
