Deus Ex’s PS3 Mandatory Install Size Revealed

While the PS3′s Blu-ray allows for huge games that have up to 50GB of data, the slow speed of the console’s drive means that many titles have to install parts of the game onto the harddrive simply to play. Another game to require a mandatory install will be Deus Ex: Human Revolution, so, if you’re planning to pick up the game, make sure you have some space free.

Who knows if the BR drive is too slow, or if they just can install, so they do; but on 360 they can't, so it's 100% they will find a workaround, whereas on PS3, why bother!

Nit picking at the littlest of reasons to slag off the competition is plain silly and there is no arguing that nearly everything on the 360 is proprietary where the case is not the same on the PS3.

You can pick up a (non proprietary) hard drive for the PS3 for a fraction of the cost that you can on the 360 (proprietary). Most people I know have installed 500+ gig hard drives on their PS3's a couple years back for roughly $50 dollars per drive. Now you can get nearly double that size for the same price.

I install all of my 360 titles to take the stress off of the system itself and I never fret the wait time. These articles are made for fanboy rage and nothing more. The majority of people are not thrilled with installs but don't get frustrated over them.

For edigem to have more disagrees than agrees (when I initially replied to his post) for stating what he did is sad and that is why I replied. It's tiring seeing the immature fanboy responses and disagree to agree ratios on post such as edigems. not gonna be a dick about it but is it really the PS3's fault that games have to be installed on HDD? inFAMOUS, Uncharted, Motorstorm, Killzone...all great games for PS3, not one of them having any install! it should be known by now that mandatory installs on PS3 are a way dev taking advantage of the HDD and that's all!

Those games don't necessarily do the same things as other games. Moreover, they are made by first party devs that get all the help they need from Sony.

It's very common for multiplatform games to require mandatory installs on the PS3. Even then the PS3 versions don't run any better in many cases than the 360 versions.

The fact that you guys make a big deal about taking a few seconds to switch a disc (which effects a far smaller number of 360 games than there are PS3 games with mandatory installs) while acting like mandatory installs that eat up gigabytes of hard drive space and take quite a few minutes to complete are just fine goes to show just how biased some of you are.

No, it's not the end of the world, but neither is it ideal. I have an 80GB PS3 and I don't want to have to buy a new hard drive with money that I could otherwise spend on a new game.

To be fair, infamous was still 2nd party when their games was released. As for the "multi-disc vs mandatory install" issue, you have to admit that the SONY does well with it's first-gen readers as well is having a foresight to include a standard HDD to alleviate reading discrepancies.

your 2nd paragraph simply means that the architecture of the PS3 and 360 are different. PS3 is just not a conventional PC architecture which the 360 is being lauded as. but when games are tailored specifically for PS3, games are looking and play very very good like Uncharted, GoW, KZ2/3, R&C, GT5 etc. they are undeniably the best looking games on console to date!

You haven't been paying attention, apparently. Playstationlifestyle trolls the PS3 all the time. I've often commented on how, for a PS3 site, they tend to publish a lot of negative PS3 articles, and articles moaning about the PS3. This article is no exception.

This myth has been put to bed so many times already. The constant speed of the PS3's Blu-Ray drive beats the variable speed of reading multilayer DVD's every time. This isn't new. The reason developers install to the PS3 drive is because they CAN! It's just another tool that developers can use that makes their lives easier that isn't possible with the 360 because not every 360 has a hard drive and they have to account for that when developing for it.

We've seen plenty of developers put out outstanding games on the PS3 with no mandatory installs, like Uncharted and Killzone for example. Drive speed certainly doesn't seem to be an issue there, do they? If the drive speed was such a bottleneck, how is it possible?

It's simply developer choice to utilize the harddrive for installs or not. Frankly, I'm all for more options for developers. If they feel they need a harddrive install to make the best game they can, I'd rather they have the option than not.

Because of cost reason the Xbox 360 didn't go the way of Blu-Ray. I paid a whopping $600+tax for my PS3. I think I will switch a few discs for a couple of hundred dollars less personally if that was the draw.

Multiple discs aren't a big deal unless it is extreme, just like an install isn't a big deal if it isn't too big.

That said, on the Xbox 360 you can install the entire game onto the hard drive for superior performance or pop it in immediately for instant gratification.

Multiplat devs do not bother to optimize the laying down of data onto the BR Disc. If they did (see majority of exclusives) you would not have extreme install sizes. You cannot lay down data on a BR Disc the same way as a DVD and expect them to work the same.

For the billionth time in the last 5 years...the data throughput of the PS3 BR is the same or better than the data throughput of DVD 9. If multiplat devs are to ass lazy to optomize for the PS3 they can shove their game.

Notice how Sony has taken a total 180 in design and developers tools and ease of development with the Vita compared to the PS2/PS3?

Sony has already stated that the upcoming PS4 won't have these issues...which is great.

The BD drive in the PS3 is a CLV drive. The disc spins faster or slower based on where the data is being read from. Physically slowing and speeding the angular velocity of the disc to read data from different sectors is what takes the biggest bites out of the read speeds of a BD. Besides, what makes you think that a multiplat or even an exclusive that uses 8.5 gigs or less of data is on a 25 GB BD? More likely it is on a DVD or a BD9 to save money on printing discs and do you know the ps3's blu-ray drive performance with those discs? (I'll give you a hint: 8x)

1. That is what a CLV (constant linear velocity) drive does, it reads data at a constant rate. The data on the disc is in a continuous line that spirals out from the middle. But in order to read the data from the center of the disc at the same rate as at the edge, you have to spin the disc faster than when reading data from the edge. Imagine a line of data that goes all the way around the outer edge of a disc. If you took the same length line and wrapped it around near the middle of the disc, it would go around the middle twice because the distance is shorter. If you wanted the to read both lines at the same rate, the disc would have to be spinning twice as fast to read the center line because you would have to spin the disc twice to read the whole line.

In other words, if you want a file from the center of the disc and a file on the edge of the disc you would have to speed up the disc to read the data in the center then wait while the disc slows down so you can read data from the edge. While the disc is speeding up and slowing down you are not reading any data.

In a game, different levels use some of the same textures, models, sound effects etc but also use some textures, models, sound effects etc that are unique to each level so you end up reading data from all over the disc. Developers try to stymie this by duplicating data in different places on the disc which helps but is still an imperfect solution. In the early days of DVD, drives were also CLV and it took time before the architecture of the drives was sufficiently advanced to allow it to read data from the outer edge at sufficient speeds to allow for a constant angular velocity.

2. Are you really sure about that? Really?

Keep in mind that if you take the program structure of a Blu-ray and print it on a DVD you get the BD9 blu-ray standard. Even though it is physically a DVD, it's called a blu-ray because of the way the data is printed on it. Now, even today, it still costs about 70 cents more to print a BD than it does a DVD. If I had a game that was under 8.5Gigs I would print it on a DVD simply because for every million copies that I sold I would make an additional $700,000 in profit because I printed the game on a DVD instead of Blu-ray (BD25).

So say I was Activision (but we could be talking about anybody here, even 1st party studios) and I printed Call of Duty on DVD (or BD9) for the PS3 and it sold 10 million copies then I would make an additional $7 Million in profits vs if I printed on a BD25. That is pretty darn compelling. And if I really wanted to call it a Blu-ray instead of a DVD so that everybody would get a warm and fuzzy feeling because Blu-ray is a more superior and advanced technical standard than DVD then I would just print a BD9, tell everyone it's a blu-ray because technically it is then I would laugh my way to the bank. So, are you still sure it's a fact?

Without sounding like a smart-arse, the fact you have to install from a Blu-ray to a HDD means the format is more useful for storage size and in a way the PS3 is using HDD Tech for installed games, not blu-ray. The PS3 is using an infantry version of the Blu-ray format, I am sure they have sped up data transfer on newer drives and the Install option on Xbox is similarly a disadvantage(with games over 2 discs or more) but it shows that both consoles rely more on HDD for performance than storage format. The Blu-ray is better than DVD argument is mute at the moment until Blu-ray catches up with the speeds DVD can do its only advantage is high-def video. I have both consoles and extra discs with Xbox is less bothersome than waiting on installs but both are such minor issues its not worth getting huffed and puffed up about!

Yeah, it's a funny arguement. Mandatory installs from BR to the HDD is high tech since you get a slight performance advantage than Blu alone. Installing your complete game on the Xbox 360 is due to the inferior DVD format though.

Sorry but most games aren't playable without being installed on PS3! Watching Solid Snake have a smoke doesn't hide that FACT. HDD is slightly faster than DVD and much more faster than blu-ray for streaming data off the disc, the only thing this proves is how inferior both formats are at the moment for developers and gamers. It all points to digital distribution and even then, MS has invested heavily in this area with Live and it shows. WiiU is using DVD too, I don't see a lot of companies using blu-ray as a standard just yet and its far from 'DEATH'

The fact that the large number of Xbox 360 Arcade models lacking an HDD which prohibits the mandatory install option without alienating a portion of your consumer base doesn't have anything to do with the fact that there is no such requirement on 360.

Where's the developer quote stating that the blu-ray's slow read speed is the reason for the install? It is slow, but many developers don't have any issues with this so I'd just like to see a source for this particular game if it is indeed the issue.

Come on, an article complaining about 3GB? You've got games on 360 shipping on multiple discs and they're complaining about a pithy 3GB?

PS3's ship nowadays with a minimum 120GB. If your like me you've upgraded (in my case 320GB) and people with the smallest PS3 at 20GB and even the 40GB would have resigned themselves long ago to having to delete data to accommodate new games.

I wish the ps3 had a full install option similar to the 360's. I've went through 3 Ps3's due to Bluray drive failure. :/

Actually, I'm leaning more toward games that have mandatory install nowadays. I just resurrected my 80gb MGS4 PS3 from YLOD and will do anything I can to help keep a BD from extraneous spinning and adding extra heat output. I WILL NOT GIVE UP MY SOFTWARE BACKCOMPAT! As consoles become more and more like actual PCs, this will be an unavoidable future anyway.

What is even better? Being able to install the WHOLE game to your hard drive and notice the improvement oh wait PS3 cannot do that so you are stuck with forced installations of only partial data.

I'm using a 20GB first party PS3 exported from Japan, and never have I been in trouble in terms of free space.

Need to install a new game but your PS3 doesn't have enough space? Just delete the game data of the games that you beat. As long as you keep your saves (which generally take KBs of space), you can install them back whenever you need and you're good to go again.

I wonder what the hell some people do with their 700-800GB HDDs, do you stock pirated games on those or what? Installation size should not be an issue for anyone if I'm doing OK with my dinosaur PS3. Other than the somewhat boring wait untill the installation is over, there's nothing much I can complain about any game being installed on the HDD, especially if it translates into shorter loading times and less graphical problems.

Why doesn't anyone do something similar during HDD installs? A simple game of Tetris would make an install fly by in no time. Okay, maybe not Tetris (copyrighted?), but some simple game to pass the time with.

While PS3 games can have up to 50GB on one Blu-ray disc as said in the article, then why are there still developers saying one Blu-ray disc isn't large enough when they are only referring to 25GB Blu-ray disc? ie. recently statement from Team Bondi who made LA Noire.

Higher cost to manufacture dual-layer 50GB disc isn't an excuse because there are plenty of cheapo Blu-ray movies that still using 50GB disc. Obviously, the cost different of manufacturing single or dual layer very small.

My opinion is many game developers still want an excuse to sell part of the game contents as DLC and they need to say their game is so large that it wouldn't fit on "one Blu-ray disc".

Meh, gonna get it for he PS3. Although the forced install on DMC4 annoyed me on the PS3 when I first got it, I gotta say it was worth it.
