Deus Ex’s PS3 Mandatory Install Size Revealed

While the PS3′s Blu-ray allows for huge games that have up to 50GB of data, the slow speed of the console’s drive means that many titles have to install parts of the game onto the harddrive simply to play. Another game to require a mandatory install will be Deus Ex: Human Revolution, so, if you’re planning to pick up the game, make sure you have some space free.

As long as it makes the game run smoother - no big deal.

revealed? was it a secret?

MidnytRain4642d ago

No one really knew about it before now.

My 750gb hard drive laughs at your 3gb install.

BulletToothtony4641d ago

Since every other article now is about comparing PC to PS3 graphically why don't they come out with "PC Mandatory Install Revealed for Duke Nukem, Mass Effect, Counter Strike, Crysis, MW3.. etc etc"

Oh that's right every pc has a hard drive so it doesn't really matter right..

Oh wait so does every single ps3 so please STFU already with these articles please..

I love playstationlifestyle but these articles gotta stop.

killershadow1174641d ago

@BulletToothtony
Dude, it's just a heads up. It's not like it's complaining about it or anything, just saying, "Hey guys, this game will require this much memory on your PS3!" It's like a heads up for people who's hard drives are full so they can know how much memory to free up.

HardCover4641d ago

@BulletToothtony

I think YOU need to stop.

It's an innocent article.

DaTruth4641d ago

But they spent 3 years beating PS3 owners over the head with it as a way to show the superiority of the 360. The majority of these articles 2 years ago were console war related!

Who knows if the BR drive is too slow, or if they just can install, so they do; but on 360 they can't, so it's 100% they will find a workaround, whereas on PS3, why bother!

If Sony tells Guerrilla, Naughty Dog or Santa Monica to make the game with no install, they do, regardless of the BR drive speed!

Kewl_Kat4641d ago

I think the word you're thinking of is "exposed". I don't think it has to be a secret for something to be "revealed".

3GB? Not a problem. Got a 500 GB HDD inside that has about 300 GB free space. I'll make a sandwich and get some snacks while the game installs.

Boody-Bandit4642d ago (Edited 4642d ago )

How sad is this place when you say you have a ton of room on your hard drive because you can basically put any size drive you want in your non proprietary console? <- Oh that's why the disagrees, ENVY.

I don't get why sites even bother posting install like it's news any more. Don't they have anything news worthy to discuss?

saladthieves4642d ago

The comment was reserved for those future guys who complain and say stuff like "Eh...another mandatory PS3 install...Sigh". This was just to show them that they could be doing something else while it installs and that this is also nothing to complain about. (Believe me there are people here on N4G who will!).

Mister_G4642d ago

Same here :)

Some people are so impatent. A 10 or 15 minute install is not the end of the world.

SixShotCop4641d ago

It's not the space. It's the time it takes to install the game. Even though it's better, it's annoying that it's mandatory. Especially on the bigger games. In this case, 3gb is nothing.

Brutallyhonest. Can you please stfu with your envy BS? Why would anybody envy the size of your HDD? Do you think you're special or something? Maybe i just don't get it. It must be a little kiddy thing. Somebody besides Mr.Honest please explain his logic.

Boody-Bandit4641d ago (Edited 4641d ago )

@Jerry
A kiddy thing? Judging from your response I more than likely have kids older than you.

Sorry there Jerry but NO I wont STFU. This is an open forum for discussion and as long as I am on topic and relevant there is no reason for me not to voice my "honest" opinion.

Nit picking at the littlest of reasons to slag off the competition is plain silly and there is no arguing that nearly everything on the 360 is proprietary where the case is not the same on the PS3.

You can pick up a (non proprietary) hard drive for the PS3 for a fraction of the cost that you can on the 360 (proprietary). Most people I know have installed 500+ gig hard drives on their PS3's a couple years back for roughly $50 dollars per drive. Now you can get nearly double that size for the same price.

I install all of my 360 titles to take the stress off of the system itself and I never fret the wait time. These articles are made for fanboy rage and nothing more. The majority of people are not thrilled with installs but don't get frustrated over them.

For edigem to have more disagrees than agrees (when I initially replied to his post) for stating what he did is sad and that is why I replied. It's tiring seeing the immature fanboy responses and disagree to agree ratios on post such as edigems. More than likely the reactions giving by fanboys raging usually caused by ignorance, envy or just immature attention seeking nitwits here to do nothing more than start nonsense under nearly every article.

Now kindly take your immature fanboy rage some where else. Thank you

"While the PS3′s Blu-ray allows for huge games that have up to 50GB of data, the slow speed of the console’s drive means that many titles have to install parts of the game onto the harddrive simply to play."

not gonna be a dick about it but is it really the PS3's fault that games have to be installed on HDD? inFAMOUS, Uncharted, Motorstorm, Killzone...all great games for PS3, not one of them having any install! it should be known by now that mandatory installs on PS3 are a way dev taking advantage of the HDD and that's all!

starchild4642d ago

Those games don't necessarily do the same things as other games. Moreover, they are made by first party devs that get all the help they need from Sony.

It's very common for multiplatform games to require mandatory installs on the PS3. Even then the PS3 versions don't run any better in many cases than the 360 versions.

The fact that you guys make a big deal about taking a few seconds to switch a disc (which effects a far smaller number of 360 games than there are PS3 games with mandatory installs) while acting like mandatory installs that eat up gigabytes of hard drive space and take quite a few minutes to complete are just fine goes to show just how biased some of you are.

No, it's not the end of the world, but neither is it ideal. I have an 80GB PS3 and I don't want to have to buy a new hard drive with money that I could otherwise spend on a new game.

DigitalAnalog4642d ago

To be fair, infamous was still 2nd party when their games was released. As for the "multi-disc vs mandatory install" issue, you have to admit that the SONY does well with it's first-gen readers as well is having a foresight to include a standard HDD to alleviate reading discrepancies.

Not to trying to go against your stance but if this is simply a matter of fast-reading against mandatory install, why then is the 360 still using DVD's when CD's have an extremely fast read rate. After all, multi-disc should'nt be a problem right?

**Not sure if it would make a difference if I add you another bubble, but if I can, I'd give you 2 more for having a Deus Ex avatar1.

-End statement

MrBeatdown4642d ago (Edited 4642d ago )

@starchild

"The fact that you guys make a big deal about taking a few seconds to switch a disc..."

Face meet palm.

"You guys..." Is it that hard for people to grasp the idea that someone that makes a pro-PS3 comment might not agree with every other pro-PS3 anti-360 comment that has ever been said on this website?

I swear, people around here seem to be oblivious to the fact that the PS3 or 360 fans aren't some massive homogenous horde that all repeat the exact same things. There's hundreds of people on this website, each with different opinions.

The guy didn't say a damn thing about disc swapping, yet someone acts like he makes a big deal about it.

badz1494642d ago

THANK YOU! I am all for 1 disc per game using Bluray and all but I never take a jab at disc swapping at all!

@starchild

your 1st paragraph says it all. the resources to make your games able to stream from bluray without installing is there but most 3rd parties aren't keen enough to look at it thus taking the shortcut aka mandatory install!

your 2nd paragraph simply means that the architecture of the PS3 and 360 are different. PS3 is just not a conventional PC architecture which the 360 is being lauded as. but when games are tailored specifically for PS3, games are looking and play very very good like Uncharted, GoW, KZ2/3, R&C, GT5 etc. they are undeniably the best looking games on console to date!

ClimateKaren4642d ago

@MrBeatdown

Thank you, that drives me nuts. Every time I see "you guys" in reference to a console argument. Usually the reason behind the confusion of the people who utter those words is exactly what you described. They keep treating them like some legion of people who share opinions on any and everything.

I have never bothered to comment on it, because just about every single time I see that type of logical neglect it's coming from someone in a fanboy skirmish, and I don't feel it's worth my time. I'm glad to see someone else address it though.

"We guys" don't do anything, and neither do "you guys" or "those guys".

Voxelman4642d ago

Anon19744641d ago

Voxelman said "OMG even playstationlifestyle is trolling the PS3 now?"

You haven't been paying attention, apparently. Playstationlifestyle trolls the PS3 all the time. I've often commented on how, for a PS3 site, they tend to publish a lot of negative PS3 articles, and articles moaning about the PS3. This article is no exception.

"the slow speed of the console’s drive means that many titles have to install"

This myth has been put to bed so many times already. The constant speed of the PS3's Blu-Ray drive beats the variable speed of reading multilayer DVD's every time. This isn't new. The reason developers install to the PS3 drive is because they CAN! It's just another tool that developers can use that makes their lives easier that isn't possible with the 360 because not every 360 has a hard drive and they have to account for that when developing for it.

We've seen plenty of developers put out outstanding games on the PS3 with no mandatory installs, like Uncharted and Killzone for example. Drive speed certainly doesn't seem to be an issue there, do they? If the drive speed was such a bottleneck, how is it possible?

It's simply developer choice to utilize the harddrive for installs or not. Frankly, I'm all for more options for developers. If they feel they need a harddrive install to make the best game they can, I'd rather they have the option than not.

gamingdroid4641d ago (Edited 4641d ago )

***first-gen readers as well is having a foresight to include a standard HDD to alleviate reading discrepancies. ***

I think it is opposite, MS had the foresight and experience from the original Xbox not to include the hard drive.

***Not to trying to go against your stance but if this is simply a matter of fast-reading against mandatory install, why then is the 360 still using DVD's when CD's have an extremely fast read rate. After all, multi-disc should'nt be a problem right?***

Because of cost reason the Xbox 360 didn't go the way of Blu-Ray. I paid a whopping $600+tax for my PS3. I think I will switch a few discs for a couple of hundred dollars less personally if that was the draw.

Multiple discs aren't a big deal unless it is extreme, just like an install isn't a big deal if it isn't too big.

That said, on the Xbox 360 you can install the entire game onto the hard drive for superior performance or pop it in immediately for instant gratification.

SephirothX214642d ago

The two people who disagreed with you must feel that you shouldn't get one.

nveenio4642d ago

They probably feel that an upgrade isn't necessary, but I have a 120GB PS3, and I just got a low HDD warning the other day... I solved it with a little cleanup, but YES...a larger hard drive IS handy.

SephirothX214642d ago

I've a 640gb in my slim PS3 and a 250gb in my fat.
One is running customised firmware and the other is for online.

BigWoopMagazine4642d ago

Or they just really like to disagree... with everyone. N4G seems to be full of disagreeable people for no reason.

Ahem... anyway, on topic, this is going to require me to clean out some drive space. I stupidly filled it up with music (about 5% of my games let me use it), and due to some glitched (corrupted?) file I can't delete or identify, I can't delete all the music at once - it forces me to go through file by file. Such a pain.

The og deus ex is magical. Im also very exited about mass effect legendary edition from the gp. Its next on my playlist never played mass effect game before.

IamTylerDurden1362d ago (Edited 362d ago )

Never played ME? It's imo the greatest trilogy of all-time and perhaps the best setting outside maybe Fallout. Play it. Great DLC as well. In 2 & 3 at least. Skip Andromeda. Also, Human Revolution was great as well even if OG fans claim otherwise.

shinoff2183362d ago

Mass effect 1 was great. I feel they dumbed down alot on the 2nd one and seemed more action like. Mass effect 1 the citadel was an explorable city. Far as I got in Mass effect 2 it was reduced to a location list no traveling through it. I disliked it alot(the citadel) part. I also feel they went more action oriented then rpg

just_looken362d ago

It always makes me mad when you see something you have done in the first mass effect or dragon age can make something change in the 3rd because bioware make 6 games in what 8 years? that did this but today 0 games do this.

I wish we had trilogies today were we can share saves and have multiple endings/path's on all 3 because of choices from anyone of them.

Its so funny being the bad sheparad from one to 3 then the end having just you and joker ha ha yet everyone is like hey your a hero with a 90% casualty rate.

CBaoth361d ago

Fallout can't hold Mass Effect's jockstrap. The one Fallout even in the ballpark is 3, and that's only because the DLC was extremely good. When Ken Rolston was in Bethesda's employment were they good. That's about it. They're now the world's greatest copy/paste developer out there. Bioware at their pinnacle was ten times better a studio than Todd's team. Go look up the games

IamTylerDurden1361d ago

Mass Effect is my favorite, followed by 2 and 3. Yes, ME2 was dumbed down but also refined in terms of polish and accessibility. ME2 had an awesome story, great DLC, and a solid cast. Mordin in particular. It's a great game. Even 3 which was the weakest was still solid imo despite the ending. If u love ME how do u not enjoy all 3?

Fallout is not a better game though FO3 was great. In terms of setting though Fallout is Mt Rushmore. The 50's post apoc setting was brbrilliant. I still put ME setting n lore above but FO is up there with setting.

Godmars290362d ago (Edited 362d ago )

Something non-post apocalypse or dystopian. Just world saving. Fighting bad guys while doing good and dealing with ethical/moral/psychological quandaries.

sadraiden361d ago

The reason why fantasy RPGs, and Fantasy as a genre, are more popular than Sci-Fi, is because of the low technology/high magic tropes. If all of your problems can be solved with looking up the answer on a smartphone, well, there's just lower stakes than if a character has to have a sword fight, and climb the tower, and rescue the fair princess and recite the ancient incantation to seal the evil.

Obviously you can have universe ending stakes in Sci-Fi, but that requires abstract reasoning, and an ability to RP in a way that is progressive instead of regressive. Couple that with Sci-Fi games and media generally being faster paced, and you've got a genre that attracts a very specific demographic of gamers.

TLOU2 is the finest game ND has made. U4 was fantastic. New ND is a more impressive ND. I don't rate Crash n Jak like i do Uncharted and TLOU. Even Uncharted 1 and 3 were not as well crafted as TLOU, TLOU2, U4 imo. Idc if ppl troll TLOU2, most ppl are clueless, that game was incredibly impressive.

TLOU2 combat, visuals, and acting were the best of the genre. I found the story deeper and more profound than most but it's subjective. The level design was excellent also. The score. Audio. Animation. It was a masterpiece to me. The rope physics, detail. TLOU2 deserved Elden Ring scores and ER deserved TLOU2 scores. If any game deserved 97 in recent years it's TLOU2. Best game i ever played and if ppl come with Abby bs i already know it's not worth it. Those who call TLOU2 trash are foolish. Just look at it running...
