I find it funny how Demon's Souls fanboys come in two main flavors, the first group delude themselves into thinking there's a worthwhile story there and the second group delude themselves into thinking a story would have hindered the game.

I belong to a smaller third group, I enjoyed the game(enough to finish it three times), but wish there was a better storyline.

Playing Demon's Souls I was always reminded of an old rpg game called Kings Field that I used to love. Very similar feel, similar lack of story - just a tough experience that you were kinda thrown into, and I loved it.

It was funny when later on I discovered it was the same company that made Demon's Souls. I still can't put my finger on what reminded me of King's Field, the games are completely different, but there was certainly something.

I agree with you, I personally didn't like Team Fortress 2 (At least the rest of the Orange Box was up to Valves high standards)or L.A Noire (I traded it in after Disk 2, because I found it so monotonous & repeditive).

However while I do think both Portal 2 & Demon Souls are slightly overrated, they are still excellent games.

People who complain about Demon's Souls being difficult only have themselves to blame. Got caught off guard by an ogre? I don't see how. You can hear them a mile away. People who started gaming this generation are a bunch of cry babies. I played games harder than Demon's Souls when I was 10 years old.

I think a lot of old school games were harder.

Demon Souls was not hard at all. Maybe the first time playing it is, but once you start earning levels and getting better weapons it was a steady difficulty game.

as for Story there is one unlike the author says. It's all told through text and actually finishing each world.

That horse you have is way too high for you. I think that video games have evolved past the point of having to repeat the same exact 5+ minutes of gameplay when you die. Maybe you enjoy that challenge, but as a father of 2 (who DID grow up with Atari and NES) I don't have time to sit around replaying the same thing over and over.

I'm not looking for something easy, but something that will hold my attention. Demon's Souls did NOT do that

The original Ninja Gaiden series, the Mega Man series, Battletoads, The Ghost and Goblins series, etc. A lot of games from my childhood are exponentially more difficult than Demon's Souls.

All you really have to do in Demon's Souls is pay attention and grind some levels.

What does that have to do with anything? Are you saying that since you played games that were harder than Demon's Souls when you were a kid, then everybody should play hard games without complaining? Not everyone is exactly like you. Some people like having fun in different ways, it doesn't mean your way is right.

Everyone has different preferences in gaming and he doesn't like Demon's Souls. Who cares if it's because it was too difficult for him. I'm not a huge Portal fan, and I haven't played Portal 2, but I feel like I should point this out.

First he says he made himself play through the 17 levels, and then he says that he wanted more. So which is it? Every game is repetitive to an extent. LA Noire was enjoyable the whole way through for me. He complains in the article that getting bad outcomes on cases doesn't have consequences and while that is true, with the amount of possible endings to certain cases, it would be difficult to cover all possibilities. My biggest problem with the game was the lack of connection between cases and that replaying cases simply wasn't fun because most things didn't change. Though I found the game very enjoyable on the first playthrough and no more repetitive than most other games out there. The other problem I had with the game was the non-challenging combat and he doesn't even mention this in the article. Street crimes were ridiculously easy and not much fun because of that. Likewise, combat segments in the game were too easy overall.

I have to say it.

If you don't like Demon's Souls it's because you're a product of the game holding your hand generation, and you're soft.

That game was the most refreshing example of what games used to be, and exactly how they should be. No other console games even comes close to giving you what your money paid for. No faggy hints every 5 minutes. No tutorial. Today's games basically finish themselves in 7 hours. Demon's Souls is a shining example of how to customize, learn and go adventuring.

it all depends on the taste of the gamer and his mood!!sometimes i feel that i have to play something quick and mindless fun(cod)or another times i put fight night champion for a boxing match to lay back,another days i want to play something more complex and i play games like mass effect and demon souls or a good story like bioshock and uncharted or a gory game like gears of war and god of war!!!
my hate on games is base on controls sometimes and the fun factor .games are made to have fun not to get piss off and break the remote( did that many times),when u feel that way turn off your console or pc off and dont play no more!!!

Love demon's souls and portal 2 and cannot understand how you couldn't like them.

Demon's souls- The challenge that game offers is incredible. It is a game that separates the boys from the men. The hunters from the hunted. The feeling of accomplishment you get from that game is unmatched by any game.

Portal 2- This game has so much fun and charm and was worth every penny just for the experience. It was a little bit short, but the story was intriguing and fun to play through. And if the writer played more of portal they'd have seen all the new traps and coll testing gear.

To me though, Demon's Souls is easily the most satisfying game I've played this gen. There IS a story to be had in Demon's Souls but it isn't shown in the form of dialogue or cutscenes, it's very subtly done in the levels themselves, its bosses and even the item descriptions.
I personally found the game to have a sort of finnesse to tell a story with its environments and atmosphere rather than force-feeding it to the player. Such a refreshing change of pace.

I loved L.A. Noire. First experience to really put narrative on a pedestal and give it the respect it deserved. Yeah, it was flawed but what first game in a series isn't? I will always take L.A. Noire over Heavy Rain(which I still loved) anyday. Yeah Guy, we will go a few rounds...
