Demon's Souls: "Apparently, there is a group of gamers that love games with zero story"

Yeah you know those cut-scenes with the animations and narration couldn't possibly be about story.

*Sarcasm for the "sarcasticgamer"

I find it funny how Demon's Souls fanboys come in two main flavors, the first group delude themselves into thinking there's a worthwhile story there and the second group delude themselves into thinking a story would have hindered the game.

I belong to a smaller third group, I enjoyed the game(enough to finish it three times), but wish there was a better storyline.

Anon19744637d ago

Playing Demon's Souls I was always reminded of an old rpg game called Kings Field that I used to love. Very similar feel, similar lack of story - just a tough experience that you were kinda thrown into, and I loved it.

It was funny when later on I discovered it was the same company that made Demon's Souls. I still can't put my finger on what reminded me of King's Field, the games are completely different, but there was certainly something.

jony_dols4637d ago

I agree with you, I personally didn't like Team Fortress 2 (At least the rest of the Orange Box was up to Valves high standards)or L.A Noire (I traded it in after Disk 2, because I found it so monotonous & repeditive).

However while I do think both Portal 2 & Demon Souls are slightly overrated, they are still excellent games.

mac_sparrow4637d ago

"I belong to a smaller third group, I enjoyed the game(enough to finish it three times), but wish there was a better storyline."

I'm a member too then. I'm on my 4th playthrough, I go back to it between games.

Drekken4637d ago

Story in games is great and all, but I prefer addicting gameplay. Demon Souls rocked.

Gambero You are awesomely slow!

You know...this is an opinion and liking something or not is a completely subjective thought, so I don't see the point on hating on anyone for their own opinion.

yog-sothot4637d ago

besides, there are actually tons of phenomenal games that have indeed no story...

Tony P4637d ago

Well, that was kind of disappointing.

I have to say, if you're going to write an article pointing out flaws in popular games, you should probably say more than a short paragraph.

gw4k4636d ago

I really don't care about your opinion. Uggg, how is this news?

Gambero4636d ago

It's marked as an opinion piece. Don't click on opinion pieces if you don't care about them

People who complain about Demon's Souls being difficult only have themselves to blame. Got caught off guard by an ogre? I don't see how. You can hear them a mile away. People who started gaming this generation are a bunch of cry babies. I played games harder than Demon's Souls when I was 10 years old.

rabidpancakeburglar4637d ago

What games were there harder than demon's souls?

barb_wire4637d ago

Battletoads on the NES for one (IMO) - that thing was batchit insane.

Nitrowolf24637d ago (Edited 4637d ago )

I think a lot of old school games were harder.

Demon Souls was not hard at all. Maybe the first time playing it is, but once you start earning levels and getting better weapons it was a steady difficulty game.

as for Story there is one unlike the author says. It's all told through text and actually finishing each world.

stevenhiggster4636d ago

Ghosts and Goblins! It was rock hard.
Pretty much 90% of games back in the old days when saving was a pipe dream.

Gambero4637d ago

That horse you have is way too high for you. I think that video games have evolved past the point of having to repeat the same exact 5+ minutes of gameplay when you die. Maybe you enjoy that challenge, but as a father of 2 (who DID grow up with Atari and NES) I don't have time to sit around replaying the same thing over and over.

I'm not looking for something easy, but something that will hold my attention. Demon's Souls did NOT do that

Pro_TactX4637d ago (Edited 4637d ago )

Funny, I am a father of two and I found the time to beat Demon's Souls 4 times. Kids sleep at some point.

Edit: Before you ask, yes I have a full time job too.

stevenhiggster4636d ago

I am a father of one, while we're at it, and I never did finish it.
Nothing to do with not having time, more to do with me not having any patience.

Pro_TactX4637d ago

The original Ninja Gaiden series, the Mega Man series, Battletoads, The Ghost and Goblins series, etc. A lot of games from my childhood are exponentially more difficult than Demon's Souls.

All you really have to do in Demon's Souls is pay attention and grind some levels.

vickers5004636d ago

"I played games harder than Demon's Souls when I was 10 years old."

So?

What does that have to do with anything? Are you saying that since you played games that were harder than Demon's Souls when you were a kid, then everybody should play hard games without complaining? Not everyone is exactly like you. Some people like having fun in different ways, it doesn't mean your way is right.

i agree 100% with this article, well written

antihiroprotagonist4637d ago

your opinions suck, you suck and I'll fist fight you anytime anywhere. considering you were too much of a whiny bitch to beat demons souls, I doubt you'd give me much of a challenge in a fistfight :)

/tongueandcheek

elbeasto864637d ago

I can understand not liking Demon's Souls just for the way the game plays but not liking it because you weren't good enough to finish it? You're probably one of those people that go around saying that games cheat when you can't beat it. Don't hate on a game because you weren't good enough to play it.

Gambero4637d ago

Did you read the article? The last line was "That isn't my idea of fun". Why would he continue to play if it isn't any fun for him? Everyone has different preferences in gaming and he doesn't like Demon's Souls. Who cares if it's because it was too difficult for him. Maybe he didn't have time or patience to play through a game with sub-par game play to begin with

PlayStation is killing it with the exclusives this year. Exclusive wise, what has xbox released this year?

VersusDMC13d ago

They won't complain about Microsoft not releasing games here but put all their effort into saying that only first party counts. Games like Rebirth and Grandblue Relink don't count. Games published by Sony like Helldivers 2, Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin don't count because Sony don't own the studios.

It's some narrative building so for when Hellblade 2 come out they can say, seemingly without shame, that Microsoft is actually releasing first party games this year. And claim victory.🙃

Chevalier13d ago

Weird 1st party games didn't matter when Xbox had so little, but, now they're important again? Guess Ark 3, Stalker 2 don't count any more?

KyRo13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

ARK 3 doesn't exist and it's just a timed exclusive. It's also a game that a majority of the ARK player base doesn't want as it's a massive deviation from what people like about the original game

Abnor_Mal13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

Honestly to me it doesn’t matter what they say, they are just finally getting a chance to say all the things PS fan(boy)s were saying to them for the past few years. Let them get that, they deserve a “win” for a change.

The new narrative is that suddenly first party games matter again when awhile ago they didn’t, but that was because they were struggling with the same three games with the occasional fourth or fifth. That games should be everywhere on all platforms since that’s whats happening to theirs. The consoles don’t matter just the ability to play anywhere. Whatever Xbox is doing Sony will soon follow.

They’re not moving the goalpost anymore, but rather just moving the whole damn stadium.

jwillj2k413d ago

Only a incel would care about who published what and who owns who.

If it’s not on the other consoles it’s an exclusive.

Killing what? Where are the 1st party games??
Stellar Blade and FF7 is what I’m seeing this year.. so shallow!!!!

andy8513d ago

Doesn't really matter as long as they're great games. Baffles me why people put an emphasis on 1st party. They're still games you can't play anywhere else this year

Cacabunga12d ago

Andy

PS brand is my favorite because of their stellar first party software.. currently I see absolutely nothing to go crazy for..

CS712d ago

Nonsense.

PS1 and PS2 was built on great third party exclusives like FF, MGS, GTA & Tekken.

raWfodog13d ago

Of course I love the games I’ve played from PS but I don’t believe we need to limit it to ‘exclusive’ to acknowledge that Xbox will be releasing some good games this year also. In that same vein, I believe that Xbox diehards shouldn’t limit their acknowledgment of good PS games to 1st party. There are plenty of good games to go around for everybody.

Tacoboto13d ago

This is a Playstation article about Playstation games and your comment is about Xbox. Can't you just celebrate what PS has without dragging this into console war BS?

ChasterMies13d ago

I don’t think Microsoft is releasing games exclusively on Xbox anymore. They have some timed exclusives that release on Xbox first.

Returnal, Astro Bot, and Ratchet made having it since day one worth it.

GT7 free updates and Spiderman 2 and others at 60fps have made this last year more than okay.

But yeah, it’s been dry lately. BG3 and third party have made great filler, but we ready for that SOCOM or Killzone announcement and some more 1st party goodness. Crossing fingers for Ghost of Tsushima 2 announcement this summer.

Didn’t know Helldivers was exclusive! Wtf is going on at Xbox that they can’t get these games, series s strikes again.

SonyStyled13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

Sony owns the Helldivers IP. The first was a PS3/Vita/PC game. It was never an Xbox game that they could ‘get’ a decade ago. I’m not sure what the upset is with Xbox here

CS712d ago

Lol, how do you ignore Rebirth one of the best games ever made?

anast13d ago

Looks like they are on par with the previous gens. Solid games all around. Interestingly enough, we can't say they released a bad game yet this gen. Unlike the Quiet Man dustup.

I actually do not mind if Marathon releases on multiple platforms . I just wish that Marathon has a dedicated single player campaign.

Helldivers 2 is exactly what gaming needed. I’m loving it.
