Legacy Of Kain: Turning The Vampire Formula On It’s Head

Lately, vampires have become a hot commodity. Novels like True Blood and The Vampire Diaries have portrayed vampiric protagonists as lonely people who are afraid to get close to mortals because whatever passion they feel will be abruptly severed when the aforementioned mortals die. Their struggle to contain the bloodlust is another essential ingredient to the vampire protagonist, who perceives the sating of his bloodthirst to be a reduction to a hungry, out-of-control beast. Finally, the key goal of any vampire protagonist is to regain his humanity and to become a better person via the relationships he builds over the book franchise. Romance sells, and what could be more romantic than the evolution of a broody, lonely immortal?

However, even romance loses it’s charms over time. The saturation of romantic formulas has accelerated this stagnation, and the shadow of love-triangles has hidden other vampiric stories that, while not romances, are engaging tales. One such epic is a seri...

Twilight killed the Vampire man...

DatNJDom814644d ago

And it will be up to The Legacy of Kain Series to bring some badassery back to the vampire. Cmon Sony reboot it. I don't mind if I have to wait until next gen. Just reboot this series. By the way its not for kids. Although I personally think think that Lords of Shadow did a great job as an origins story for you know who.

CrescentFang4644d ago

(sorry for being off topic) Don't forget Castlevania too!

Micro_Sony4644d ago (Edited 4644d ago )

CastleAvania was ok but did not have that vampire slayer feel.

If anything it felt more like like a mix of God of War, Devil May Cry and Shadow of Colossus. Which is not a bad thing but the Vampire hunter element was missing.

Also forgot to mention that Twilight is Kojimas favorite novels.

zerocrossing4644d ago

@ icro_Sony

Im still recovering from hearing that myself, although I imagine like many other thing, that the novels are better than the movies.

zerocrossing4644d ago

I agree, I think a reboot of the franchise would be great, or even a retelling of Blood Omen making use of graphics and gameplay we have this gen or next. Everyone should play the original Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen, sadly its age and load time is a turn of to some gamers.

Lords of Shadow did a fine job fleshing out that origin story.

Whitefox7894644d ago (Edited 4644d ago )

I liked Lords of Shadows I really did I just felt like it wasn't really Castlevania and it got even more confusing when they tried to blend in some of the story from Lament of Innocence into it: Gabriel is theorized to be a bastard son of the Cronqvist noble family, and Rinaldo Gandolfi made the orders weapons including the Combat Cross. I don't know what it is theres just something missing to make it feel like Castlevania, with that said I think Lords of Shadows should've been its own orignal series.

Actually you might as well as disregard this comment cause apparently David Cox has stated that this reboot isn't attached in anyway to the orignal Cannon.

Agreed, Kain was a great protagonist and his story was epic. Then it was continued wonderfully by Azreal and the Soul Reaver series.

New LoK game, please!

RustInPeace4644d ago

@ antz
I think you mean Raziel.

antz11044644d ago

@ Rust

YES!!! Thank you.

I played them all. This series had the best dialog and voice acting. Hell the gameplay was great as well (excluding the first LOK I didn't appreciate the old school top down 2D then, great story though). One of my all time favorites. I hear a reboot is impossible because it's tied up in legalities.

Whitefox7894644d ago

I defintely know Eidos hasn't forgotten about it with Raziel and Kain's cameo in Tomb Raider Legends and Crystal Dynamics has stated their interest in reviving the series. Which I hope is true I already have two games on my list with unfinished storylines: Shenmue *cries*, and Viewtiful Joe *cries even more*

So I would defintely like a conclusion to Legacy of Kain after Defiance.

The 7 Best Vampire Games: Embrace the Night

Vampire games are making a comeback of late, and gamers hoping this is a new trend should look back at the 7 best vampire games ever made.

SimpleSlave27d ago (Edited 27d ago )

What is a list? A miserable little pile of scribbles.

A Best Vampire Game list and no Bloodborne. A bold choice, indeed.

The_Hooligan27d ago

IMO, I wouldn't consider bloodborne a vampire game. Long story short, It's more about the side effects of the blood experiment and the influence of the red moon, than actually being a vampire.

SimpleSlave27d ago (Edited 27d ago )

Yes, Bloodborne is about Vampires. It's not just the undertones, or the imagery or the obvious parallels, it's pretty much everything and then some. Here's the thing, Bram Stoker's Dracula is also not a Vampire novel. Why? Because technically Vampires from folklore were something else.

But based on our updated view of what Vampires are, informed in one way or another by Bram Stoker's Dracula, Nosferatu The Vamprye, and many other stories, and combined with From Software's own interpretation, we can say with confidence that Bloodborne IS a Vampire story. Sure, there are other elements, but the central narrative is pretty much Vampires. Which would make it THE Vampire game. I mean, Cainhurst Castle. Anyways, that's how I see it.

But to each their and we'll agree to disagree.

MEGANE27d ago

Thats the best Vampire game ever, but enough talk, have at you!.

SimpleSlave27d ago (Edited 27d ago )

Absolutely... Now, die monster! You don't belong in this thread!

🧛🔥🔥 🔥

anast27d ago

I've lost all hype for Bloodlines 2. It's going to be an action game.

Barlos27d ago

No Blood Omen? Even today it's one of my favourite vampire games. We could really do with a release on modern platforms.

Relientk7727d ago

I really enjoyed Vampyr. The combat is a little clunky and could use some work. However, the story, characters, dialog. setting, and pretty much everything else in the game is great.

raWfodog210d ago

Same here, I was getting excited too lol. Maybe there’s still hope for a return to Nosgoth.

ThichQuangDuck210d ago

It's High Time For Legacy Of Kain To Make A Return

Crystal Dynamics' interest in Legacy of Kain and the new secret playtest rekindle hopes for the epic vampire journey's much-needed revival.

GaboonViper275d ago

I approve of this very VERY much.

ApocalypseShadow274d ago (Edited 274d ago )

Yeah. It would be nice.

But kind of hard to do when they are tasked in helping TRILLION dollar companies finish making their games. Just blows your mind right? Sucks the life right out of you like a vampire.

Shikoku274d ago

They need to do it quick the voice talent isn't getting any younger and we need a wrap up of the story of Kain and Raziel.

Miraak82 274d ago

Man I can only imagine what a modern take of Nosgoth would look like past and present. Have Blood Omen with D4 style top down graphics and Soul Reaver taking advantage of SSD and physical/spectral plain shifting with modern graphics and updated combat ,,,, drool :p Honestly they could condense soul reaver 1,2& defiance in to 1 game if they ever do a remake , make it a huge epic arpg

neutralgamer1992274d ago

Yes and start with a proper HD collection of all games
