Digital Foundry vs. Unlimited Detail

Richard Leadbetter writes:

"Without a doubt, the technology story of the week is Euclideon's Unlimited Detail demo: an apparently revolutionary approach to graphics rendering that sees the end of polygons, replaced by billions upon billions of "atoms" that allow for an infinite level of detail in any given game scene. In short, Euclideon appears to have come up with a new approach to voxel rendering that seemingly has much potential.

At the time of writing, the demo has been viewed almost 1.6 million times on YouTube, and has engendered fierce debate on the internet with the harshest criticism coming from Minecraft developer Notch, calling out Euclideon's engine as "a scam"."

Looks like it'd be cool for VR demos and stuff. Too bad it seems to be limited to static scenes with no dynamics or animation for now.

FsterThnFTL3514d ago

Very interested to see the 2 games they say they are working on.

Forn3514d ago (Edited 3514d ago )

Yikes, that looks insanely good. Guess we'll see how it translates to real-world games.

I used to be so impressed when these guys first showed. I was hoping they'd be the next huge thing. Glad they still exist.

Their other video says they do animation

THEY'RE BACK!

Also, that whole "surprise" didn't surprise me. I could tell right away those were video game graphics because I'm not blind

starchild3519d ago (Edited 3519d ago )

Yeah, but you have to admit they're damn good. Nothing else looks that good. Then again, nothing ever came of their technology last generation, so let's see if this new technology actually makes it into videogames this time.

BTW this kind of reminds me of the photogrammetry technology that The Astronauts developers used to make The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. Cool stuff.

Minute 1:25, there is a floatin cross. Before that, yes, I was thinking it was real life video with some tiny frame rates due to the internet.

Fizzler3519d ago

I can't wait to play real life!

AndrewLB3519d ago

I'd like to see this without horrible youtube compression because at the end of the video, the outdoor "nature" scenes were actually quite impressive.

Of course the BS about us not being able to tell the difference was just that, BS. I think this technology does have potential though, especially if it allows game developers to greatly cut back on content creation from scratch.

kwyjibo3519d ago

I have no idea why this is covered in gaming sites. Euclideon make visualisation software for laser-scanning. Their clients are governments, mapping companies, construction companies.

Here's a video of what they actually do - https://www.youtube.com/wat...

The reason it's unsuitable for games is that it doesn't handle lighting or animation.

JDW3519d ago

In the video it is stated that they are launching a gaming division in 2015.

Almost a year my ass. Its been well over a year and months after that.

This presentation has very little attention to gaming at all. Maybe one day it could though.

hesido4002d ago

Very impressive. I remember them moving away from gaming into other areas, and they seem to have found their spot... I don't expect them to bring much to Gaming industry tho.
