Is there a Tony Hawk's Pro Skater Reboot in the works?

VGW: If you were at all gaming in the 90s you’ll remember the Tony Hawk franchise at its best. The title became immensely popular for it’s impressive landscapes, versatile control scheme, fun easter eggs and great soundtracks. Jump to the present day and the franchise has hit a few bumps in the road, most notably the recent Tony Hawk Ride and Tony Hawk Shred which made use of a skate peripheral. They were pretty much unplayable.

Today however, a suggestive Tweet came from Mr. Hawk, a man known to be very involved with the franchise.

I hope so, they might just be remaking the level in his next game though. They need to do something to bring Tony Hawk games back from the dead....That stupid board thingy killed it dead.

Activision are reasonable, business-minded people, right? Certainly they've learned their lesson from two peripheral flops. Add to that the increased trend of reboots and HD remakes....Maybe this is just wishful thinking, but I think it's time.

Emilio_Estevez4665d ago

It could happen....I would say it could go either way really, I was just throwing that out there.....I would buy a remake.

If it plays like Tony Hawk: PS 2 then I'm in. Many hours were wasted on my Dreamcast with that game.

dagamdagee4665d ago

lol, not very subtle, but it's good that there's a potential THPS game in the works that could go back to the series' roots. Good on them.

Loved the 1st one... Lots of time spent playing that on the DC!!

toxic-inferno4665d ago

If they really want to make this work, they should
forget about open world,
forget about complicated controls,
forget about the ability to walk around (although this dead make traversing the levels easier and more fun),
forget about in depth story-lines,
forget about making any "clever" control schemes (I'm looking at YOU, Nail-The-Trick).

And just make a good game with lots of levels, lots of fun and lots of extras. They died, not because of a peripheral, but because they attempted to compete with the skate franchise, which was trying to go in a different direction in the first place. And look where it got skate... in every bargain bin up and down the country.

Speaking of which, imagine if the likes of Pro Skater 4 were around today. They could be releasing new levels as DLC every month. And exclusive characters, possibly even based on Sony/Microsoft exclusive brands. Okay, maybe too far.

Man, that's difficult to watch. Larry is bored. Tony looks and sounds defeated. I can't imagine he even wants to sell this product.

Soldierone3711d ago

Kinda felt like Larry had an lost memory moment there.... lol

larry "When is it coming?"
"This year"
Larry "You can skateboard on your phone?"
"Yeah, well you swipe...."
Larry "How close it is? When will it come out?"
"This year"
Larry "So my wife can play it this year?

Summons753711d ago

lol give him a break...the guy is going to outlive all of us o_o

RyuCloudStrife3711d ago

yeah that was funny Tony's like I just said THIS YEAR!

sungam3d3711d ago

Yeah, but to Larry that's a lifetime away.

HotMess3711d ago

Larry and his hard hitting journalism.

ironfist923711d ago

Shouldve seen Larry tlak to Seth Green about the upscoming Batman/Superman film.

Larry would not shut the hell up and let Seth talk. Its obvious he knows absolutely nothing of the things he tries to talk about.

*Bangs head on the desk*

What in the hell with blue skies are they thinking?!

DarkLord10033713d ago

Yeah - saw that coming. What a shame

mike32UK3713d ago

All of these devs jumping ship to the mobile gaming crowd... They'll come crawling back, and if they don't it will be because they've gone bust

pompombrum3713d ago

While I'm sad to hear this as I'd prefer a console release but mobiles are the perfect platform really. Tony Hawk was always a "just another 15 minutes" game and would fit in well with my mobile gaming habits at least.

THPS 2 HD? Totally new game? Tony's Rocking New Year's Skate with a new special move where he gets off his board and plays it like an air guitar?

WHAT COULD IT BE?

acharlez3720d ago

Tony Hawk RIDE sequel.

No doubt.

ftwrthtx3720d ago

Interesting. Gotta be better then Shaun White

MatrixxGT3720d ago

As long as it has the flair the first games had and they take time and put passion into it I wouldn't mind returning to thps.

acharlez3720d ago

Agreed. It's about time to bring the series back.

Elit3Nick3720d ago

Absolutely, they need to go back to the open world mess around type of game that the popular one had, maybe an evolution of the underground and american wasteland series.

jlukee3720d ago (Edited 3720d ago )

I would totally buy the first 5-6 Tony Hawk games if they re-released them on the current consoles.

While I love new games, its always nice to revisit those great games from my childhood!

Am_Ryder3720d ago

If it can in any way have a shot at Skate.'s throne, I'll be happy. Skate did so much right that THS games did wrong, but there were still a few things Skate could have taken further and never got a chance to.

NYC_Gamer3720d ago (Edited 3720d ago )

I hope the new Tony Hawk game goes in the same realistic gameplay direction as Skate did

acharlez3720d ago

Really?

I like the arcade-y take.

Snookies123720d ago (Edited 3720d ago )

Typically people who skate in real life lean towards Skate more. I loved the Skate games, and keep hoping they'll make more but I can't deny how much I used to love Tony Hawk 1-3 back in the day. Those games were just so fun. I hope if they do make another THPS it'll be like those, just prettier.
