Death of the Box Art

For years, the difference between box arts for different regions has been grandiose, with American games often getting box art that is nothing more than a shill of an advertisement. Meanwhile, in regions like Japan, pure art is used for the covers and provide some pretty memorable packaging. Now the US has tried to step up the class in their box art with Resistance 3, but the product is still being treated like a toy rather than a work of art.

The Ico/Shadow of the Colossus is fine to me but the Resistance 3 box art is just God awful. Its so simple, so boring, if this was a new ip, then the box art would not attract me in the least.

Resistance 2's box art was much better than this piece of junk.

Resistance 2's box art sucked and was generic, except for the special edition box art. FOM's box art was good though.

Look at the chimera's teeth :) The Resistance 3 cover art looks like a old poster you would see like them bounty posters. I like the cover art for all Resistance games.

@Pintheshadows That's what I thought too. The poster reflects the setting of R3 (in a way).

I actually think this is the BEST boxart ever. Its so simple, but it immediately attracts your attention and tells you THIS IS RESISTANCE 3. Even if you don't look at it directly.

The teeth actually being landmarks in disguise is a nice touch and Capelli walking off alone reps the loneliness and desolation in the game.

I absolutley love the box art. The fact that this was actually PAINTED adds to the intrinsic value of Resistance. Its the oppisite of your A-typical shooter.

I like simplicity, so I never understood the unnecessary "ugh" generated towards the Resistance 3 box art. If R3 were a new IP and you had been following the game's progress, it would quite ignorant to drop the thought of buying the game because of it's box art. That's just me though. I think it's a very vain article.

I loved this box art instantly the first time I saw it on the PS blog. Can't understand for the life of my why it gets so much hate. Sometimes I feel like my interests and tastes are exactly opposite of the common gamer. I almost never agree with anything I read on the internet about games.

The reason this box art works is simple. It's desolate, and the message is clear. A lone man = Capelli, Walking = his journey, Large Chimeran Skull = the seemingly insurmountable threat that looms infinitely over them.

It says a lot if you think about it. But of course, the aveerage consumer may not think. But then again, it can get you on a subliminal level, I just put it into words.

it's because they are too busy creating "iconic" cover art and publicly congratulating themselves and calling it that........"iconic" is the most overused and illegitimately used word today. trust me, if people can't even remember your "iconic" ANYTHING a week after it happens, it ain't what u say it it

I like the Resistance 3 cover art, but it's a huge difference between 1 and 2 (colour wise, obviously).

Having said that, Resistance 1 and 3's cover art >>>>>> Resistance 2.
