so you should know that the ps3 does NOT upscale ps3 games.. only ps2 or ps1 games.. so the games have to be native 1080p if you want them to play in 1080p, and it really doesn't matter unless you have like a 50" plasma, and i say plasma cause my friend has an 1080p lcd but my 720 plasma runs circles around his.. it looks way better on mine tv than his..

but bottom line it probably will be 1080p on ps3 and 720 on xbox which will be upscaled and nobody will be able to tell the difference

i am pretty much a 100% sure it isnt native 1080p i will confirm when i get mines tommorrow but i remember having to do the same thing for rainbow 6 vegas because the 1080p and the 1080i were extremely blurry so i would have to take them off. Its essentially the same thing except call of duty's 1080p is not blurry. If it automatically defaults to 720p that is the native resolution. I don't know about ps3 being able to upscale i dnt knw or care enough to find out how it is accomplished all i knw is if it defaults to 720p that is the native setting. I do own both consoles but i will buy on ps3 cus i dnt pay 4 xbox live lol

Unlike with the Xbox 360 the PS3 console itself does not do upscaling UNLESS the individual game does it with its software. 360 = hardware upscaling, PS3 = software upscaling (only when game studio has coded it themselves.)

OK, lets explain...

The PS3 has an internal hardware scaler, which, if they want to output 1080p is almost certainly being used. Unlike the 360 one, its only horizontal scaling, so you need to put an horizontally squashed picture onto it, and get it to scale up.

The resolutions it supports are:-
960x1080, 1280x1080, 1440x1080 and 1600x1080

So lets say for the sake of argument, the developers are using 960x1080 upscaled to 1920x1080, the frontbuffer (the origional image) is still more than a 1280x720 (720p) image. (1,036,800 for 960x1080 as apposed to 921,600).

So at very worst, 1080p is still going to be more detailed than 720p image.

The 360 on the other hand can send (standard, ie 720p) any buffersize to the scaler to upscale to 1080p (or whatever), hence the reason people have been saying things like Halo and Gotham run in 640p.

First off: you do not know for certain if it's 1080p native, or upscaled on the PS3.

Second: you do not know if it's 720p native or 1080p native for the 360.

In short: you're making assumptions, but one can only tell when both versions are running besides each other with official boxes stating stuff and checking the official output on the video ports.

To the one below: wrong. The PS3 can upscale, but only through software. That is doing horizontal or vertical upscaling at once, not both at the same time. I also don't see what this video proves, besides putting the PS3 settings in 480p or 1080p and unchecking boxes 1080i/720p. So if it wasn't 1080p native one would get a black screen on the PS3? Sounds pretty silly.

And I'm not nervous at all, just like to read the truth. Because I've heard so many lying PS3 stories about so many games that it would run better/higher res etc. and in the end the 360 version was on top, that's why.

But I can see PS3 fans are envy about the ANA chip in the 360, for hardware upscaling which can do the trick if it's needed.

1. 1080p @ HDMI is always better than 1080p @ Component . (ask anyone who has used both if you dont believe me ) as your 360 doesnt have HDMI but PS3 does , I think you should opt for the PS3 version.

2. Free Online is an important point. If you dont have a gold subscription with Xbox Live already than you are looking at an extra amount over your game price. Why do that when you can play it in a lag free environment(PSN's most attractive feature IMO ) with all the features of COD4 for free ??

I think "the mart" just disqualified himself from any technical discussions. HDMI provides WAAYYYY more bandwidth than component ever will. PS3 has NATIVE hardware support for 1080p, so if the game is designed to run at 1080p the PS3 displays natively! The only time the upscaler is used is when the source is lower resolution. And AFAIK it DOESN'T upscale PS3 games, only PS1/PS2 and DVD. The main reason being that the cell is used to upscale so it takes a hit on performance.

All I know is that on my PS3, if a PS3 game says it runs in 1080p it will run at 1080p (Ridge Racer 7 For example) and I can see that from my TV menu (like in this video), if it says 720p maximum, It will adjust to 720p, even if my settings are 1080p in the XMB. And no matter what you try, it will only run at 720p (Motorstorm for example) You can't make the PS3 scale PS3 games!

Thats where the Xbox 360's hardware scaler has an advantage, but all that means is that NO xbox 360 games are native 1080p, they are at most 720p/1080i native (dictated by hardware) and then hardware upscaled to 1080p with the ANA.

And HDMI more washed out than Component? Are you on crack? try getting a PS3 on a TV that supports full RGB and set it on the PS3. Now output it through component on the EXACT same set and you tell me which looks the best. I've tried it myself and the picture difference is dramatically better on HDMI, much more vibrant colours and even more important contrast/brightness. VGA is better than Component, yes, but its still not as vibrant as HDMI (you can't test VGA on PS3, but you could run an Xbox 360 along side). The thing is you need a good quality modern TV.

Wow MART - that was the most stupid comment I ever heard on this forum. Well - lucky me - as I have the component cables for the PS3. And this "washed out colors" story is really really lame. Art direction determines the color scheme what you call wash out - or cartoony colors. My PS2 games play well on the PS3 - many of them with cartoony colors - so must I believe you that the PS3 can play PS2 games in vibrant rich colors - but the moment it is native PS3 it suddenly becomes "washed out"? Wow man - you must be the poepol of the year.

On the other note - I don't think the PS3 version is native 1080p - so people - just chill out. It is most probably a higher native resolution than the XB360 - upscaled - and peoples - just read more info on the scaler on the PS3 and the XB360 before making stupid comments. The XB360 is not where most of you are pointing to - it sits somewhere else - embedded if you like. And the PS3 scaler can do both h & v scaling - just that Sony is holding back on that - most probably because they believe it will downgrade the targets they are setting. Much debate around that - but that is their prerogative as the platform owner.

In the end - it looks good for both platforms - PS3 version might have slight edge - but not so much that you can make a federal case out of it. Just enjoy the friggin game and leave the other platform alone.

Not only does it seem this game runs at 1080p on PS3, but there have been many reports of the developers themselves saying the PS3 version will infact excel over the 360. I believe "lighting, rendering, and textures" or something of the sort were in the list, not to mention I get to play all multiplat games like this FREE while the other side pays.

Not to mention not all XBOX's come with HDMI output, so I will be enjoying my COD4 1080p FREE online experience in one more day, on my new SONY Bravia 1080p LCD-Projection, which I purchased yesterday. Oh it is a good time to be a gamer! I am very proud now to get rid of my old Toshiba HDTV and give my PS3 what it deserves..to be played on a brand new 1080p SONY, makers of nearly the highest quality consumer-electronics merchandise in the world.

I saw some comments earlier I have to mention about...component and monster cable usage on 360 DOES NOT mean it's the same as PS3's HDMI output. For the record I had a Toshiba 1080i with component and now have a Bravia 1080p with HDMI. I dont know if its was the brand of TV (Toshiba v Sony), the cable I used (component v HDMI) or the resolution (progressive v interlaced) but the different was VERY noticeable and I would not like to go back to hamburger, having dined for so long on steak. The difference is not as big as going from SDTV to HDTV but anyone who says HDMI and 1080p make no difference doesn't have it, needs a eye test or is flatout lying.

It makes a huge differences. Much more detail with 1080p and you can definitely tell if your eyes are alright.

For those with PS3s and HDMI cables that want to see the difference for themselves first set your PS3 to 720p mode and play your games. Afterwards set it to 1080p (or even 1080i) and you may see a distinct difference in picture quality. I'm not sure about the 360, maybe you guys with HDMI 360s can try it.

It is a big deal for people who are into HD, home theater setup, and hardcore gamers especially. People who invest in a lot of money into home theater want to know they are receiving true HD products.

To others, it may be their way of getting retribution from the horrible onslaught of attacks and bad press flooded in by the 360 fans when PS3 first came out. To many Playstation brand loyalists, their upcoming beloved product was horribly under fire from the 360 camp even before it had launched...and mind you having "not yet launched" means why the hell would it even be under attack? It certainly wasn't doing anything to hurt 360 gaming as it wasnt eve out yet, and even in its first few months it still was heavily attacked by Microsoft loyalists BEFORE the PS3 had even gotten on its feet enough to be somewhat of a threat anyways.

It was a very groundless pure hatred felt by millions of teenage 360'ers across the world, ad to us PS3 fans we could never figure out why this hatred was there so early on and where it came from...especially to so many ignorant teens who honestly don't know jack about tech or gaming industry info to even make such convictions about a particular console.

Little things like this, COD4 in 1080p, mean something to some people out there cuz its a moment when we can get a lil taste of the "take that!" feeling after seeing our beloved product get so vehemently beaten upon in its early life by the 360 media.

It's been a tough first year for PS3, as was the same case for the 360 in it's first year (although many of you conveniently forget about tht fact, since the 360 has the year lead advantage now to "look down" upon its new competitor.) So even for me, I am proud these days when more and more news, big or small, comes out that makes my PS3 shine. It's like seeing your son goto a new school and get picked on by all the bullies for a long time, then one day you hear that he picks up a football at recess and throws it back really far, much to the surprise and amazement of the bullies.

1080i is an interlaced image and 720p is prgessive. every human's eyes are not the same. some people prefer 720p and some like 1080i better. i personally like 1080i better as it does draw slightly more pixels 1280x720=921600 pixels (720p) vs 1920x540=1036800(1080i) also, an interlaced images gives what i call the interlace shimmer on some parts of images.

gt hd exhibited those shmmering fields because of lack of anti ailiasing. rachet at 1080i doesnt do it at all. :)

I agree. Your equation is wrong, though. A 1080i native res has still 1920x1080 pixels (and buffers), the i is done by the video logic, not the buffer (thats why, if a game supports p it also supports i and vice versa). Your number of pixels is also correct (slightly higher then 720p), but usually because the buffer size is 960x1080 (same amount of pixel as 1920x540, BTW) (or even higher, if the x res is > 960, up to 1920 native) rather then 1280x720.

Wow, I had no idea there would be so much controversy regarding 1080p running natively on the PS3. My reason for getting this game on the PS3 was mainly because I need to get more games for my PS3. I already have about 20 games on my 360, so I thought I'd spread the wealth and get more use out of my PS3. I can get 1080p on both consoles using my 40" Samsung 1080p LCD. My 360 is hooked up using component cables, and the picture looks fantastic. I have a monster HDMI cable running from my PS3 and games and Blu-ray discs look fantastic as well. I have the same TV, SKATE is not 1080p native it is scaled, but my tv still says 1080p. So it runs at 720p native and is being scaled, just like the 360 version.

Im going to explode if I see this again as the PS3 fanboys have been thriving on this misconception:

IW has stated, officially and on their forums, that both versions are exactly identical. Both render 720p with the option of 1080p upscaling, both support 16/18 players max. There isnt anything different minus achievements on the 360.

People seem to think because it says 1080p on the box its 1080p native even though IW stated otherwise. As for comparing PS3 and 360 screenies, IW said that its not legit, the PS3 screens shown now and previously were from a newer build compared to the 360s old screenies and the beta, the lighting was different in the two different builds to determine which color set/lighting to go with, and also the PS3's more recent build had extra shaders and geometry added.

Nothing is different between the two versions, just the online support of XBL, PSN, and achievements.

To below: Infinity ward has said numerous times in their forums that the games will not be 1080p native but will include upscale support for 1080 native. I am aware on the limited PS3 scaling abilities. Infinity Ward also stated both games use the exact same assets including textures, so eboth version will look identical, but the 360 version having better anti-aliasing due to its fast frame buffer and post processing performance compared to rsx.

In order for a PS3 game to run at 1080p it has to do so natively. The only way that the PS3 will not have "true" 1080p is if Infinty Ward left out a few horizontal pixels and decided to upscale it that way. The PS3 cannot upscale PS3 games from a lower resolution. I believe there was one game (MLB '07: The Show) that tired to upscale a native 720p resolution to a 1080i resolution and the results were $hitty at best.

The PS3 can only do horizontal upscaling since for some strange reason Sony decide to only unlock that feature in their devkits(in terms of upscaling). So in order for a game to run 1080p on the PS3 it has to do so natively.

remember all that talk about the ps3 not having a harware scaler? thats because it doesnt. What that means is the original (native) game resolution may be 1280x1080, and the ps3 upscales the horizontal (1280) to 1920 using interlacing or line scanning techniques, using only the cell and rsx (no hardware scaling). Vertical resolution is the most important so its probably native at 1280x1080.

The important thing here is that the xbox 360 cannot output this resoltion using Xenos and the 3 core processor. It can only output to either 480p or 720p and then Ana does the rest of the upscaling, vertical and horizontal.

So basically the ps3 with the cell and rsx = more powerful than xenos & 3 core due to this fact, that the ps3 can output higher resolutions without a HW scaler, especially that the upscaling is done without a HW scaler is amazing. That should show everyone how powerful the ps3 is.

So to answer your question, no, its probably not native 1920x1080, however it will look beautiful since it is native at 1280x1920 which is a fairly high resolution, and its only upscaling 640p (Halo 3) on the horizontal.

Dude, I understand your joy. I had the pleasure of playing in the BETA and must say I was very sad when the beta ended. BUT NOW ... I am back in the game. And "THAT" is a good thing.

We should use COD4 to bring both camps together and agree that both consoles are kick azz, when you have a kick azz game like this to enjoy.

jesus you guys act like your consoles are your children. its a game console not your life. i have both 360 and ps3 and a 1080p sammy and dont notice much difference from 720p to 1080p. my main problem with ps3 is in most first party exclusive they always say some bs about the power of the cell and how its not possible on any other console witch in most cases is total bs. i also hate how every sony fanboy complains when something is said thats bad about ps3 but has no problem saying bad things about 360. 360 fanboys are the same. your basically like a bunch of racists. its a game console. get over it!!!

OWNED ... are you for real. A 0.1 in the graphical difference is NOT owned. If you have never seen it on the devil console (360) I will let you know is ALSO looks jaw dropping. You really need to drop the "My Dad is better than your dad" outlook on consoles.

From what I read, as I said, they BOTH look awsome. So as I said, why the silly azz fanboy comments. Get over you console that you live and die by.

360:
Graphically, the game is excellent, with all the bells and whistles you could hope for. There’s bloom lighting complete with god rays, incredibly detailed character models with some eerily realistic facial effects. The battlefields are teeming with chaos, with explosions and gunfire coming from all angles and effects like helicopters and jets flying overhead giving you the feeling like you’re really there. The framerates never bog down, either, staying fairly consistently around the 60 fps mark.

PS3:
Graphically, though, CoD4 is stunning. Vibrant would be one word used to describe the scenes, even the destroyed city. Tracers flashing through the night add another bit of eye candy. Explosions look amazing; snipe an enemy and you will know when you have scored the hit with the small splash of blood. Put on the night-vision goggles to work in the dark. Enemies won’t see you, even though you seem to be close enough to smell … or dance.

didn't make this game. It probally would have been running at 30 fps for the ps3. Thank God for Infinity Ward and their group of talented programmers. This game blows Halo 3 out of the water.

You are mistaken. You have to set your PS3 to 1080p in order to get 1080p. Don't listen to any crapy about native and upscaled. At the end of the day, everything is upscaled in one way or another.

i just got a ps3 and a new sony 52 inch bravia about a month ago and man this 1080p by sony is such a load of crap. They advertise that their system runs most of their games natively at 1080p and yet we almost always find out that their high end games are upscaled. I have a 360 too and 720 doesnt look much different than 1080p on ps3. But when it comes to watching a movie on a blueray playey( i use my stand alone blue ray not my ps3 one its looks twice as good) wow is all i have to say. The clearest picture i have ever seen...absolutely increadible. u guys think its my t.v. should i return it and get a plasma. Spent like 4 hours at the store looking at every t.v. and this sony bravia seemed like the best one. Compared it to a samsung 52 and the sharp aquios 52 which has half the respnse time but all the store reps kept telling me the bravia is the best t.v. they have in the $3000 price range.

Its hysterical seeing how confused some people are on this 1080p or not issue!
Its also very obvious that some people have failed to realise the difference between upscaling and native resolution.

Why does it matter? Because upscaling will not create new detail, natively rendering at a the full 1080P resolution will give you much more detailed picture with detial you won't see from an upscaled image.
Claiming that all 360 titles are 1080P is a bit rich - its great that it can upscale to this resolution, but that is not the same as rendering at that res in the first place.

Having said all that, PS3 owners shouldn't be too smug. Its a fact that only a dozen games will natively render at 1080P, with the vast majority rendering at 720P - just like there 360 cousins.

It is a fact that the native rendering resolution for this game on both platforms is 720P. Both machines will upscale that image to 1080P.

People will continue to not understand the difference, and all the time game box's don't quote native resolution will just lead to people getting confused and talking nonsense, like half of the posts in here!
Whatever way you look at it, this is great looking game, and for once the developers have ensured the PS3 version is as good if not slightly bettert than the 360 version. But please, don't try and pretend its native resolution is 1080P - I think the guys who actually coded the game might know best?
