Id Says RAGE Is Arguably The Best Looking Game on Consoles and Runs at Twice the FPS

A bold statement indeed, but one that Id has so far been able to back up.

evrfighter4686d ago

yup he doesn't ride his IP's like Molyneux and Kojima

The dudes not afraid of a new big budget IP major props.

b_one4686d ago

he has name to backup new IPs (hey it`s a new game from Carmack, that dude, maker of Doom) and all ppl know it is gonna be good game...

Still im counting that others will follow hes skill and will adopt new sollutions...

Soldierone4686d ago

You don't get the name for no reason...you get the name by taking risks....if he didn't leave Wolfenstien to make Doom, if he decided to milk Doom instead of creating Quake, and if he didn't decide to implement what todays standards are in games he would be nothing.

Kojima could easily do the same. Create new games at the quality of MGS, and he will have a similar name. However he obviously loves MGS so why leave it? He is taking an alternative route, using a single game franchise to try new ideas.

Pixel_Pusher4686d ago

I guess we'll see when it hits the streets. KZ3 is easily one of the most beautiful games on the consoles and the MP quality is just insane. And what about GOW3?

I'm willing to put money on it that RAGE will not top KZ3 or GOW3.

HeavenlySnipes4686d ago

He has to or he'd get overshadowed by the BF vs MW3 drama. Also, Resistance 3, Uncharted 3 and Skyrim (all established IPs)

ChrisGTR14686d ago

dude what are you talking about ID blows. sure they do really good graphics but they BLOW at making actual games.doom 3, quake 4,some other online game that was kind of like battlefield but worse. ID blows at making games and always has, graphics wize there good but gameplay is always repedative and lame.

Inside_out4686d ago (Edited 4686d ago )

.
...he said " arguably "...I think many would argue that Crysis 2 and the game that pushed them into October, Gears of War 3 would have something to say about that but beauty is in the eye of the beholder...SOooo

Many great looking games...I guess it comes down to expectations. Rage looks great BUT and this will be the defining issue, I think Rage will run 640p. Did you notice they never mention what rez it's running??? It doesn't bother me, depending on how it looks but the PIXEL COUNTERS are always watching...lol.

COD uses the same engine at 60fps and 640p. Brink uses the same engine...I hope it doesn't turn out like Brink...O_o

Common Johnny...show some console footage otherwise your no better than Dice and their scams. I've seen some footage that they claim is 360 but I have my suspicions. I'm also getting tired of hearing about how they invented fire and electricity. Things change...either you adapt or you become insignificant...just saying.

Bladesfist4686d ago

@InsideOut LMAO cod does'nt use a new engine. It uses a very old version of ID.

lil Titan4686d ago

i hate when graphics seem more important than gameplay this gen, smh it looks to be a good game and i hope they release there engine to other developers since i hate the over used unreal engine

awi59514686d ago

@B-one

You forgot about quake infidel.

DeadlyFire4686d ago

Well if you look at the game there isn't buildings collapsing everywhere nor is there anything to do with multiplayer. So its understandable that your game has higher framerate then Battlefield 3.

I am certainly picking up RAGE, but its not because its got more frames then my new favorite shooter. Its cuz I respect old skool id software and RAGE does indeed look like a great sandbox SP game.

bozebo4686d ago

"COD uses the same engine at 60fps and 640p. Brink uses the same engine."

what?

TheOtherTheoG4686d ago

Inside_out: CoD games run on a heavily modded version of the Quake 3 engine,iD Tech 3, that's 1998. Brink runs on the Doom 3 engine, iD Tech 4, 2003. RAGE runs on a brand new engine, soon to be the Doom 4 engine, iD Tech 5. Just so you had your facts straight.

meetajhu4685d ago

John Carmack + idsoftware = win win

OpenGL4685d ago

@ ChrisGTR1

id software didn't make Quake 4, Raven software did. Sure Doom 3 wasn't a fantastic game but it wasn't bad either.

The last real game id software developed was Doom 3 and before that it was Quake 3, which is considered by many to be the greatest multi-player FPS of all time.

Millah4685d ago

Reading through some of these comments just proves how many of the new gamers today don't really know a thing about gaming history.

John Carmack is arguably the single most influential engine coder living today. He pioneered SO MANY of modern day graphic techniques that programmers use. And you might ask why that's important? Because it doesn't matter how powerful your hardware is if the developer doesn't know how to code an engine to sufficiently take advantage of that power, and how to render the images on screen. John Carmack pioneered many of these techniques in coding sophisticated modern graphical engines. He's a brilliant programmer.

However, he's NOT a game designer. Carmack runs the engine-making at id and does almost ALL of it himself, as well as the company, but id has a completely separate section of employees dedicated to game design. Like Tim Willis.

People who show disrespect to ID really are not a respectable gamer. Even their competitors respect ids influence.

nveenio4685d ago

This is so frustrating. Anyone could make a beautiful game on consoles if they took out physics, destructibility and advanced AI. It's frustrating to see so many gamers kissing Carmack's rear window just because he helped mold a genre. Wait until Rage is released. If it doesn't suck...if it has physics and destructibility...if it's more than just a pretty thing to look at...then you should give him props.

pixelsword4685d ago (Edited 4685d ago )

"yup he doesn't ride his IP's like Molyneux and Kojima"

1. There's nothing wrong with that.

2. Yes he/Id does: Quake has a bunch of different titles; and even if they didn't make some of them, you think they aren't making money off of the ones they didn't make, like they just gave it away?

There is no denying that Id are capable of pushing hardware to the max. Rage looks absolutely amazing on both consoles and high-end PCs alike.

Id's graphic engines are so well optimised, that even on lower spec hardware, the games still look awesome! Hell, Id even managed to get Doom 3 looking great on the old Xbox (an achievement in itself!).

But is Rage better looking than Uncharted 3 or Gears 3?

Maybe, maybe not...we'll just have to wait and see!

SilentNegotiator4686d ago (Edited 4686d ago )

I doubt it. From what I've seen, the game has a very cel-shaded sort of look to it.

Even at 2xAA, 60fps, whatever, a cartoony looking game doesn't strike me as "impressive"

Now if they could actually RELEASE the game....

"crysis 2 on ps3/360 KILLS Killzone 2 and 3 "
-
You're blind. 720p MLAA 30fps vs aliasing and sub-hd is enough to make your statement a joke.

WitWolfy4686d ago

Just respect the mans opinion and move on

Peaceful_Jelly4686d ago (Edited 4686d ago )

What makes Rage stand out are the mega textures. And there's no way in hell where Crysis "console" would look better than Killzone. Some of you people really need to to play Killzone and shut the heck up, seriously.

But I agree that Rage actually looks on par or maybe better than Killzone "on consoles".

http://www.tomsguide.com/us...

dabri54686d ago

I've seen the game running in front of me. Looks amazing. Really surprised to find out it was the console version I was seeing.

damnyouretall4685d ago (Edited 4685d ago )

@silent
all games are kinda cartoony, for the time being anyways. even the best looking games havent reached the next level yet. bf3 is on the right track though. anyways rage is not cell shaded, just colorful. why burn on it? it might be a great game

SilentNegotiator4685d ago

@Witwolf

Until someone has an opposing opinion to yours, then respect can go out the window, right?

socomnick4685d ago

Makes me laugh when people say kz2 and kz3 on consoles are the best looking games lol.

Crysis 2 and other games like uc3 and gears 3 are miles ahead of anything we seen in kz2 and 3.

In fact kz3 was a downgrade in graphics over kz2.

Rage without a shadow of a doubt is the best looking console game anyone has ever shown.

Open your fanboy eyes and just accept it.

ChickenOfTheCaveMan4685d ago (Edited 4685d ago )

I played a bunch of KZ3 and Crysis2 when they came out, and to me KZ3 is still the best looking game out there, but I do think Rage will set new standards for the end of this console generation.

Dee_914685d ago

well its true it is one of the best looking games on consoles
but it being THE best is arguable
the fact that its arguable shows its up the with the best
I wont speak until I play it

funny, the creators of Crysis 2 saying this a long time ago....:P

jony_dols4686d ago (Edited 4686d ago )

Well considering Call of Duty MW2 & Black Ops are still using a modified iD Tech 3 engine (released 1999)...I'm pretty sure that iD's new engine will set the graphical bar (once again).

And please don't compare Crytek and iD.
Thats like comparing a Skoda to a Ferrari.

Lekumkee4686d ago

@MyOtherHatIsUrMom

Bro, I'm telling you this as someone who owns a 360 and PS3 and has played both and has WORKING EYES.

There's is no F'n way Crysis 2 on consoles looked better then Killzone 3... no F'n way. Not even close buddy.

Don't get me wrong Crysis 2 looked good, but it looks multiplatform good. Killzone 3 is 50 gig blu-ray PS3 exclusive good.

XRider4686d ago

What does 50gb Bluray have to do with graphics? PC destroys console and it doesn't use Bluray.

Lekumkee4686d ago (Edited 4686d ago )

@Xrider

Did you missed the part where I said "on consoles"? And 50 gigs means higher rez textures...

edit: dude this article is about consoles why the heck are you bringing the PC into this?

Bladesfist4686d ago

@Xrider, Because the submitter tagged it as pc most likely...

Voxelman4686d ago (Edited 4686d ago )

@XRider You realise Killzone 3 is like 9GB and 32GB of pre rendered video right?
http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

RAGE is said to be over 10GB in size (2DVDs on 360) and have 0 pre rendered videos...

Army_of_Darkness4686d ago

"crysis 2 on ps3/360 KILLS Killzone 2 and 3"

!!!! What The F$#K!!??? (@_@)

Holeran4686d ago

@ myotherhatisurmom Lol you can't honestly believe that. Put on your glasses or put in your contacts before you make yourself look stupid like that again.

kingdoms4685d ago

What is so funny? They where right about the 360 version of Crysis 2. Until GOW3 or Rage comes out they're still right.

I can't say I care about graphics. Game looks interesting but I won't buy a game for graphics alone.

dredgewalker4685d ago

Amen, I remember playing Doom 3 but I just didn't enjoy it that much even though the graphics were great at that time. A great game for me must have graphics and gameplay, there is no reason for this generation of pc's and consoles to skimp out on both.

NanoSoldier4686d ago

Graphics are always in the eye of the beholder. So you can't actually say this looks better than this in general. For me Gears of War 2 is still one the best looking games on consoles. Along with Uncharted 2. The only thing you can clearly define is the technology behind the game. Which makes Crysis still unmatched on PC. But other games look more impressive for example.

MysticStrummer4685d ago

Yup, and if you don't believe it just ask him. Rage looks nice, but I haven't seen a thing that would put it into the best looking console game conversation.

zeddy4685d ago

still think god of war 3 has the best graphics on consoles even though they are inconsistant through the game. crysis on the 360 is right up there so i doubt rage is going to miles better than them.

clrlite4685d ago

Agree with you. God of War 3 is absolutely mind blowing in some parts especially on my big led tv. Stig, or whatever his name is said that they were just learning how to really harness the hardware when God of War 3 was released. I can't wait to see what Sony Santa Monica's next game looks like. More importantly, what it plays like. Because gameplay is king provided the graphics are sufficient.

I really hope this isn't some chest thumping crap and is a legitimate claim.

madpuppy4686d ago

If it was anybody else besides ID and John Carmack I would have to agree.

damnyouretall4685d ago (Edited 4685d ago )

hell, so far it looks as good as anything else on consoles and has a high frame rate. i read years ago tech 5 can do unlimited textures without hurting the framerate. if this is true then im sure id is proud and they are allowed to talk shit. probably could make the game look better over time but im sure they need to turn a profit

Laxman2164686d ago

Very much looking forward to this game. Personally, from what ive seen, it doesnt look as good as quite a few other shooters visually, but im sure it will more than make up for it with awesome gameplay that surpasses most other titles.

McCullster4686d ago

From what I can tell, Rage WILL BE the benchmark going forward for console gamers just like Crysis was for PC gamers awhile back. Carmack's a smart dude. He knows how to squeeze out every bit of CPU cycle to make that game shine.

tehReaper4686d ago

Yep, I agree. It's looking great so far.

By the way, your avatar disturbs me.

Solid_Malone4686d ago (Edited 4686d ago )

rofl yeah, i keep staring his avatar out, looks very freaky

http://ohiok.com/img/i165.p...

hmm don't know which ones freakier

BrianG4685d ago

Carmack is a smart guy, but lets give credit to his development team as well. Those are the guys pushing those CPU cycles and making sure the game hits it framerate target, etc...

Your avatar will haunt my dreams.

I'm still learning how to look for the differences. At first I was focusing on shadows for some reason but I don't think that changes much, is it reflections that change?

rashada071772d ago (Edited 1772d ago )

It is supposed to be simulating how light actually works- so yes if light is reflecting off a surface accurately it should show reflection or an effect that matches what you are looking at in the environment. Next time you play a game look at a puddle of water there may be just a "baked" in texture that if you aren't paying attention seems like it is reflecting but it isn't. I would say though if the light is reflecting more accurately I would think that would give more accurate shadows as well.
I am still not 100% sold on it- it looks okay but I can't get over the hardware price jump for better reflections..

Taz X141772d ago

While games won't look immensely better, it opens up more possibilities overall. Understandably, the price jump is huge. But, that can be said for being at the forefront for any new technology. I'm currently using a 2080ti and while I've played a few games that enable it, the gpu also plays everything else incredibly well so it's not like you're buying this tech for ONLY that option. Enthusiasts will pay top dollar to check out the newest things, but this will eventually become an everyday consumer and by then they'll have optimized and become a lot cheaper.

warriorcase1771d ago

Ray/path tracing can be used how the developer wants it to be. Tracing can be used to calculate shadows/lighting, reflection and even audio, where audio waves are calculated on the bounce off material types to simulate enviroment and echos accuratly.

Should also keep in mind that this ray/path tracing system is different and less accurate option from Nvidias RTX branded type. McFly's is a reshade that layers over the top of the game and therefor the quality will vary drastically. For example you can see nice reflection in the Star Wars demo here but it then introduces colour clipping with the light saber. On a video of GTA 5 for example it was incorrectly projecting a reflection of a red car onto the road which caused a very faint red glow on the ground around the car.

If you want to see a good example of a game developed with ray tracing reflection and lighting in mind then you could look up the youtube video of "Control - Exclusive E3 RTX GAMEPLAY Trailer".

DigitallyAfflicted1772d ago

It supposed to add more realistic light Not actually more light effects and explosions

traumadisaster1772d ago

I hate to say it but I’m fine with fake lights, shadows, reflections. I just kind of like the effect, it’s also great it saves resources for other things.

I’ve been checking out some original Xbox games on x360/x1x and the engine has fake light streaming in through a stained glass window, and I love it even though I know it’s not real time lighting. Heck it even shifts as I move about.

I’ve about convinced my self rt and hdr just doesn’t work for me. Before hdr I would even complain damn why are the headlights killing me they are so bright.

I notice most frame rate, then jaggies, then resolution; with the last two interchangeable depending.

Other day watched an enthusiast rave over 4k and the poor guy was in 1080p. I played the same game the night before and thought wow this is clean, I wonder if it’s 4k, but knew differently and I thought wow even resolution is not always important. The next day he apologized and was surprised he could be fooled.

RaidenBlack1772d ago

EA should have released the Crysis Trilogy Remaster for this gen.

FGHFGHFGH1767d ago

How come the lightsabers don't give off any light? Even in the EA star wars game the guy uses it to light up a dark cave. I guess if it is using frostbite it will support rtx cards.
