Battlefield 3 PC superiority, PS4 & Xbox 720 needed in 2012

Good article. Hopefully more developers will follow DICE's path with BF3: don't skimp on the PC version just because consoles can't handle it. Maybe, as more console gamers see the differences, they'll either demand new consoles from MS and Sony or, possibly, switch over to PC gaming. Just like the article/author suggests.

Either way would be good for gamers: 1) new consoles wouldn't hold back PC games as much as they are now plus console gamers would get even better looking games, or 2) having new PC gamers would increase that market and developers would give them more attention. Since MS/Sony want to drag the current console cycle out even longer, I guess I'll have to hope for #2 and the PC market gets more gamers wanting a better experience.

I have nothing against PC gamers. I used to build computers and be one myself. However I have no want to be one again anytime soon. I'm more comfortable with a controller in my hand, and already own a console with a really nice entertainment setup.

I have a couple computers capable of BF3 on decent settings, and im most likely going to check it out on PC. However when it comes down to it, im buying it on consoles. Is it going to look godly on high end PC's? Yeah sure, but that isn't going to push me to spend the extra hundreds of dollars to get it.

To me PS3 games still look fine and keep getting better. Will it be badass when they get even better? Yeah, however games are just now started to turn to the fun factor and not the "we look better" factor and personally thats why I play video games. So ill ride that train for a while.

As for wanting new consoles...well I'm already shelling out 250 dollars for a Vita, so I don't want to shell out another 300 for a new console yet. I think they should wait till they look BETTER than current PC games. Otherwise they will slip behind again early and PC gamers will just keep nagging about it. A system thats built purely for video games should be the best. Since PC games are finally started to say screw it proves new consoles are on the horizon anyways, Ill assume announcements next year with releases in late 2013 and early 2014.

Consoles have always been 1-3 generations behind PC tech and that's never going to change due to price, so there's never going to be consoles slipping behind PC tech as they where never in-front and will never be in-front.

Graphics isn't the only reason to get bf3 on pc. It's 64 players and we'll be able to make mods and our own maps and you could play it and choose to play it on PS3 because of the controls... whatever i guess to each his own

@Soldierone: I used to be a PC gamer only, but it was too much work to me. I have a high end PC with a high end GPU, but I was always messing around with the visual settings, tweaking things, debugging driver issues, and never happy with what I chose. Plus, I was too busy worrying about how good the graphics looked instead of playing the freaking game. PC gaming to me was more about seeing how much graphical fidelity my computer could handle.

Then I bought a PS3. At first the controller felt weird to me, but I quickly got used to it. I'm still picky about which games I buy (because I hate screen tearing with a passion), but there are a ton of great first party games and third party games with no screen tearing.

Now that I'm a console gamer, I don't need to fuss around with settings, I just turn on the system and play almost instantly. There's no updating drivers, making sure things are compatible and playing nicely. There's also no worry about if I have the latest video card to run the new games coming out and feeling the need to upgrade hardware.

Also, I love using a controller... the mouse and keyboard aren't really meant for gaming... you're stuck in front of a computer monitor on a desk and my hands would cramp up really easily. With my PS3, I can sit on my couch, relaxed, holding a comfortable controller and have fun playing the game.

I've become much more of a gamer with my PS3 than all the years messing around with my computers. Like I said before, I used to spend more time tweaking stuff (because I could never decide what I liked better) than actually playing the game.

Honestly, it doesn't sound like you know much about computers. You're saying that you want it on PS3, but you're not giving any legitimate reason as to why you would choose an inferior version of the game.

I mean, a PC can be set up with a home entertainment center like you mentioned. They have HDMI cables, and support resolutions far greater than 720p. Also, you would be choosing a lower framerate, which also doesn't make any sense. Also, PCs can function with every type of controller available to the world right now. To be perfectly honest, the only reason why I'd see you getting it on PS3 is for PSN, and I wouldn't consider that service to be somehow better than a dedicated server list.

All in all, if you own a PC that is capable of running BF3, then why would you choose a console version?

Play MAG, Resistance, Killzone they offer 256/64/32 players online. Server lists cool, how many of them are hacked or run by clans? Mods even cooler, you can't get into a single custom game without people cheating and making the game what its not. Let alone games like resistance and Killzone offer server lists, so it wasn't a console limitation that took it out, it was a developer decision to not put it in. I rather just play and go anyways.

And like I said its PERSONAL choice, and PLAYING FOR FUN. Something PC gamers can't understand. Having a degree with computer related fields and getting another one I sure know absolutely nothing about computers. It just seems all the PC fanboys here look down upon console gamers and pretend they suck.

I don't understand. Are you saying because I'm able to enjoy the better version of the game, it's not going to be as fun as the inferior one because it's on a PC and not on a console? Also, if you ever played Battlefield 2 (Not Bad Company 2), you would know that the game supported a LOT more players than anything on consoles. Also, MAG? The game was 256 players and you were separated into squads. There's somewhat of a difference between having that many people in a game, and actually interacting with them all.

Also, modding a server, and cheating on a server are very different things. I've played on servers for FPS titles that made the game better due to mods, and I've played with people who were cheaters. The greatest thing about this, is you're able to tell if a server is modded or not, so your complaint about having to play something that the game isn't is moot.

And since you're so belligerent over this topic, if it was a tl;dr for you:

Choose the console version so I can relax back in my relining leather chair in my front room on my 42" tv. Now you can go on about PC's being able to link to tv's and so on, but why would I go to all that hassle. The console version will have all my live friends and if I've got less players then good. Even on B2 when I played on pc I would only go in 32/32 due to the complete mayhem of a 64/64 game, no fun spawn, die, spawn, die. I have a very powerful PC which i use for HD video editing and i choose to do the majority of my gaming on PS3 except for RTS games which i prefer on PC.

Why? because all those things you list that the PC version of BF3 is going to have are not that important to me that i feel the need to have a PC plugged into my TV - its that simple.

I keep my PC in my work room and i play games on my PS3 in my living room. I have no desire to mix those 2 seperate areas and i will be too busy having fun on my inferior version of BF3 to bat an eyelid over the PC gamers wanking themselves blind with their superior version.

Prefer PS3 over PC as well. Simply for the convenience factor. And it doesn't pollute my PC - which is not meant for gaming. I have the feeling every time I install a new game on it, it is getting slower with all the crap each game tries to pack onto my HDD. And I'm not going to get me another PC to hook up to the TV to play games only. I need that thing for other stuff. Sure, sooner or later I'd like to see a new console which can compete with PCs. Consoles have ZERO effect on the PC and if you think consoles have an effect on the PC Gaming industry then you have ZERO Clue about PC Gaming.

PC gaming will always be light years ahead of the consoles. Consoles got close this gen because DX10 sucked so most Devs stuck with DX9 but that didn't stop the huge flow of PC Exclusives. Now with DX11 here and Devs getting a handle on it's ease of use...well you seen BF3 and that's just the beginning.

PC Gaming is not about multiplats it's about PC Exclusives and/or games made to take advantage of the PC. Back in 2007 Crysis killed the consoles and they got close but no cigar as BC2 PC Metro 2033 PC and many other PC titles killed the consoles and now with BF3 PC turning the entire industry on it's head....

New consoles are needed NOW cause it's about to be a huge separation in gaming quality.

BF3 PC, Forged by Chaos, Arma 3, The Witcher 2 PC, Doom 4 PC, Half Life 2 ep3 PC, STALKER 2 PC, Metro Last Light PC, Crysis 2 DX11 plus many more PC titles are gonna be light years ahead of the aging consoles in terms of graphics and game play superiority.

I have many games that i have purchased on both my Ps3 and my PC and I play them on both and although the graphics are better on pc the gameplay is exactly the same! It's not just a matter of looking better that the article is pointing out. Another huge difference is the player count and how that is going to make for vastly different gameplay between the PC and consoles. If you don't think there is going to be a difference between a 64 player BF3 and a 24 player BF3, then you've never really experienced Battlefield. Plus, you act like the 360/PS3 won't be supported once the new consoles come out. They will; the install base is too great to ignore. Not only that, the new consoles will most likely be backwards compatible.

COD2 and Oblivion proved to be superior on the PC back in 2005-2006. Consoles couldn't even stack up to PC resolution back then.

The only 2 questions are:
1) Do you have the money to afford a superior PC? The most basic Xbox 360 can now be bought for sub 200$ and you're unlikely to find a similarly powerful PC for the same price.
2) Do you have the time to spend some time on installation processes, compatibility issues and driver updates? Consoles (mostly) save you the necessity to do so and are more plug-n-play friendly.

So what's the news here? This article seems quite pointless because (a) PC was already superior a few years back if you were willing to spend a ridiculous amount of money, and (b) new consoles are needed not because of the PC but because the current gen console cycle is reaching it's end of life soon

Well, if you're going to use the 360 as a reference point in comparison to a PC, you also need to include the XBL subscription price of $50-60 a year plus the average console game price being at least $10 a game more. PC gaming really isn't as expensive as people make it out to be. Especially when you consider that it is a true multi-task machine: It really does everything (and does them well). Sorry Sony. I own a PS3 (and enjoy it), but my PC is my true everything machine.

I think the graphics will be greater than what we see now though, look at that unreal engine demo that was played, that would probably be a minimum standard. All this graphical games which are considered very good on PC are still catering to the consoles. Just look at Witcher 2 the developers said in their engine commentary that they didn't push PC's any where near to where they could go because they knew the enging must be multiplatform. Then BF3, it is also multiplatform. A game like crysis which people still reference today which was a true PC exclusive would look a generation a head if a new one came out and catered to good PC's and new consoles.

Even though I have a monster Rig,.. It is still probably going to run about the same as on PS3, because of PC's API overhead,.. probably going to end up looking about the same as well @ consistent framerate, maybe at slightly higher res and asset reso (because of high SPU use when compiling the image)

Yes, it's out-dated and old... we get it, but it doesn't mean that developers can't make amazing games on it.

Killzone 3 looked awesome (in my opinion) and I don't care if it has baked-in shadows, or non-real-time lighting effects or whatever. I don't care what trickery they did to make it look good, but I can go ahead and say IT DOES LOOK GOOD.

People get caught up in the technology aspect that they forget that the visuals still look very good... especially since it's running on old hardware.

Uncharted 3 is going to blow my mind (by what I've seen so far) and I loved Uncharted 2, so why do we need a new generation of consoles?

Doesn't anyone think it's so cool to have a system where the games are made for that exact system and it's no up to the end user to try and tweak the graphics and optimize the performance for all their different combinations of hardware and software?

Cant see this happening; Sony is investing heavily in Vita and MS is pushing Kinect pretty strongly. I'd say end of 2013 at the earliest before we see the next gen.

I have a PS3 with about 30 games. I am proud to say i am quitting console gaming in favor of PC gaming. I have just ordered the parts from newegg.com and waiting for them to ship. I am doing this for several reasons:

Most important reason is that PC games have longevity, console games dont. Like i mentioned i have 30 games but when i want to game there is always nothing to play. Im sick of that. On a PC i played Wc3 for 7 years, CSs and DOD for a good 5, UT for 4... You get the picture. These games last YEARS. (mods help).

1. I am sick and tired of always getting the inferior yet more expensive version of every multiplatform game. $60 to play with jaggies on 720p? That sucks, esp when PC versions LAUNCH at $45-$50.

2. Superior online due to dedicated servers.

3. Superior control interface. With PC you can with play with kb and mouse OR a controller if thats your thing. Consoles are limited to gamepads only. There are games like fighters and racing games where the pad works better, but FPS needs kbm for me. Options CANT hurt.

4. If you are a PC gamer.... YOU decide when the next gen starts. Not Sony. Not Microsoft. Thats awesome.

5. IF you have a gaming computer that means you will have a fast pc for everything else: email, school, movies, etc...

I encourage YOU (the console gamer) to consider switching to PC gaming. The price for entry is $600-800 which is not that much over PS3s and 360s launch price. The only upgrade you will need to do in 4 years is the graphics card which is $200-300 depending on how much power you need (or you can wait if you dont feel you need an upgrade.). Furthermore, you will need to upgrade your PC over years anyway, gaming or not, so why not add a few hundered and have a good one?

The best part is that you do not need to know anything about PCs to do this. All you have to do is go to a website like tomshardware.com, go on the forums and tell those guys your budget and that you are a newbie. They will walk you step by step as to what you have to do. Guides online show how to assembles PCs... its not hard!

If anyone needs help with making their own dream PC You can PM me and i will be happy to help. Remember... A PC can do everything a console can and then some. You can even build your own PC, then game on your TV via HDMI with a gamepad... all with better graphics and similar cost!

I agree with most of the things you're saying and I can safely say that yes, PC gaming is for YOU, but not for EVERYONE.

Fact is, I like using a PS3 controller, and while I do know a few tricks to get the PS3 controller to work in Windows, I still wouldn't want to use it online because people with keyboards and mice would OWN me so badly. I'm good with a controller, but there's no way I can do a 270° in half a second with any bit of accuracy like you can with a mouse. So being a controller user, I would be severely crippled online.

The cool thing about consoles is that pretty much everyone is using a controller, so it's a fair fight.

Consoles have ZERO effect on the PC and if you think consoles have an effect on the PC Gaming industry then you have ZERO Clue about PC Gaming.

PC gaming will always be light years ahead of the consoles. Consoles got close this gen because DX10 sucked so most Devs stuck with DX9 but that didn't stop the huge flow of PC Exclusives. Now with DX11 here and Devs getting a handle on it's ease of use...well you seen BF3 and that's just the beginning.

Multiplats are just like practice so i'll let Allen Iverson tell you what i think about practice!

PC Gaming is not about multiplats it's about PC Exclusives and/or games made to take advantage of the PC. Back in 2007 Crysis killed the consoles and they got close but no cigar as BC2 PC Metro 2033 PC and many other PC titles killed the consoles again and again and now with BF3 PC turning the entire industry on it's head....

New consoles are needed NOW cause it's about to be a huge separation in gaming quality but remember the PC can do things consoles can't so it's expected to be on top.

BF3 PC, Forged by Chaos, Arma 3, The Witcher 2 PC, Doom 4 PC, Half Life 2 ep3 PC, STALKER 2 PC, Metro Last Light PC, Crysis 2 DX11 plus many more PC titles are gonna be light years ahead of the aging consoles in terms of graphics and game play superiority.

New consoles are required to stay competitive but eventually the consoles will just be special HDD on PC's or some form of Onlive.

yeh the STALKER series to me is right up there with Half Life 2. I have played through all 3 games about 10 times each and even just Free Rome in them for hours.

I have been playing some form of electronic gaming since the Atari 2600 and C-64.
When I look in the mirror is see an old fart, who is a gamer. I love building PCs to see what I can get out of them, a nerd engine mechanic. Consoles I could touch, but it can’t be upgraded, so no fun for me. However I am not a PC elitist, what ever that is, I am a gamer. I have games at the front of my life and I can careless about TV, don’t watch it, period. Having said all of that, there is no reason to really care which platform has X.

I owned a BMW, that BMW had a lot of options my old HHR didn’t. I don’t expect the HHR to perform around corners like the BMW. But I loved that HHR just as much as I love my BMW.

I really don't think we're gonna see many console gamers switch to PC, just because they don't wanna wait an extra year or two for new consoles.
