Microsoft: 'We wouldn't trade places with Sony, Nintendo'

Microsoft has "high respect" for both of its competitors but "wouldn't trade places with anybody."

That's according to Xbox's EMEA VP, Chris Lewis, who told MCV in a new interview he believes Microsoft's home console is in "an enviable position".

thugbob4707d ago (Edited 4707d ago )

Did you mean "wouldn't?" If so I agree, if not I disagree. This article really isn't news as ALL three companies wouldn't want to trade places with one another or at least would never admit it.

Even the most optimistic of analysts couldn't have predicted what Kinect's success at pushing console sales.

The Staples like Halo and Gears continue to dominate retail and show no sign of letting up.

The 360 is hitting it's stride at the perfect time..while the competition is about to wage a handheld war and the new consoles won't be in stores for a year and a half.

The 360 is definately in a good space..it'll be interesting to see how the 4th quarter ends up

Really Microsoft?

What's with the center-of- the-living room multimedia entertainment hub like the PlayStation 1, 2 & 3 are?

What's with the HD-DVD?

What's with stealing most of the PlayStation brand exclusive titles?

What's with the failed trying hard JRPG attempts?

What's with the Eye Toy like Kinect?

What's with the push for Wii type casual games?

really now

Microsoft, you don't want a piece of the Sony-Nintendo market share?

really now

RedDead4707d ago (Edited 4707d ago )

In fairness they've got right in the middle of Hardcore and Casual, Sony have stuck hardcore, and Nintendo have went full retard...I mean casual

You can bet your ass MS no longer cares aout exclusives, they still have hardcore games, it's just, they can be played on Ps3 and PC aswell

drsnobby4707d ago

At the end of the day MS is in a nice spot.XBL is making money hand over fist, the 360 console is seeing YOY growth.they also added new members to XBL,the casuals.i would say they are in a sweet spot this generation.

Treyb3yond4707d ago Show
gamingdroid4707d ago

MS is in a very good position right now, biggest growth, most profitable online business, products to widen their appeal further, and all without a price drop. If all else fails, there is that price drop into the sweet spot of $150 to fight competitors.

I think they are in the best position possible thus far this generation.

hudsoniscool4707d ago

why would they trade places with sony who is in the hole 4.5 billion+ with the ps3.

Dark_king4707d ago

check your facts the PS division is in the black.

ImHereNow4707d ago (Edited 4707d ago )

@Dark_king

uh... check YOUR facts. $ony lost 3 bil on ps3 plus spent 2.5bil on r&d. They had a few quarters in the black but HAVE NOT recouped that amount.

Chaotic_Lament4707d ago

You have to figure how much Sony has made on Blu-Ray as a direct result of the PS3 helping them win the format war.

hudsoniscool4707d ago

Chaotic_lament
they would have won that without ps3.

Why would they want to change places with them, when they are currently selling faster than both of them WW and are showing the most growth YoY.

Max_Dissatisfaction4707d ago (Edited 4707d ago )

What you're saying is very true, too bad some people just can't handle the truth. Financial reports and numbers don't lie
Why would they want to be like sony and invest millions into making hundreds of exclusives and yet still sell less games in total even with more options?
Microsoft is making alot more profit in games than sony currently is and have been so for a while now, why would they want to trade places with them and their money bleeding gaming department?

firemassacre4707d ago

if i were microsoft i would want to trade places with nintendo, because lets face it thats what xbox360 is all about now "casual gaming" and the wii is very casual.

fluffydelusions4707d ago (Edited 4707d ago )

At it's peak but now Wii is dying while 360 user base grows.

mendicant4707d ago

Explain to me how Microsoft is all about "casual gaming?" With all the games announced and even the ones we don't know about, how can any of you sit here and say with a straight face that MS is for casuals and Sony is the only "hardcore" system around?

The fact that you got 11 agrees for saying something so incredibly stupid really shows how one sided, blind and stupid people on this site are. Do you people even play games or do you sit around talking about how "hardcore" you are?

4707d ago
Philoctetes4707d ago

"Explain to me how Microsoft is all about "casual gaming?" "

Probably because they have almost no hardcore exclusives, aside from the usual suspects (Gears, Halo, Forza). Microsoft has made it pretty clear that they're all about Kinect.

From a business perspective, that's proved to be a positive thing for them. From a hardcore gamer's perspective though, it's not such a great development.

mendicant4707d ago (Edited 4707d ago )

That is a flat out lie and you know it.

If you can tell me straight face that Microsoft doesn't have any "hardcore" games then there is no helping you.

What number of exclusives qualifies you for being hardcore then? What genre of games makes you hardcore?

Steel battalion, Project D, Rise of Nightmares...those aren't "hardcore" expereinces on Kinect? All the games coming to the 360 are for kids? Sony is the only one making "real" games now?

From a business perspective what's good is having a diverse product that offers everyone a great experience.

What's good from a business perspective is selling 10 million units of a device proving to developers that you have a product that people want and that they should make games for.

What's good from a business perspective is having year over year growth and a kick ass online service that people actually use and care about.

What's good from a business perspective is being an upstart in the console game industry and knocking the titan that was once Sony into 3rd place. Taking away mindshare and customers.

What's not good from a business perspective is living in the echo chamber of Sony bullshit that is N4G. That's not good.

4707d ago
mendicant4707d ago (Edited 4707d ago )

Apophis,

I'll ask you the same question I asked your fellow clowns. What number of games and what genres qualifies something as "hardcore" or not?

Are you pretending that all Microsoft has coming is Gears, Forza and Halo or is that what you tell yourself to feel good?

Let's not forget that those three games alone are proven franchises that will be played longer, by more people and will be supported by more people then every PS3 exclusive combined.

You people are not gamers. No matter how "hardcore" you scream you are.

DigitalRaptor4707d ago

Blimey Microsoft, you wouldn't want to trade places with the companies who own some of the best studios in the industry producing many of the most acclaimed games out there?

Then again they have been producing mad amounts of revenue this gen.

Who knows, Microsoft might have as good a portfolio as Nintendo and Sony in the future, after all they are the youngest of the three.

firemassacre4707d ago

DigitalRaptor

i don't think they care much for studios, its more about money but what do i know....im only a gamer.

mendicant4707d ago

firemassacre,

Where do you come up with this crap? On what do you base the notion that there is nothing for the hardcore on the 360?

How does owning a bunch of studios mean that you care about gaming and not money? Are you stupid enough to think that Sony just wants to make "hardcore" games and they don't care about money?

Tell me how exclusives translate into a better console? I have purchased almost every vaunted PS3 exclusive that has come out and with the exception of two or three, they are all overrated.

The biggest problem with gaming today isn't not owning a million studios. It's not a lack of exclusives (they should all announce 20 plus games two to three years in advance)it's the self entitled assholes of today-the majority of which are PS3 only gamers-who claim how hardcore they are.

There was a time when gaming was laughed at and shunned by anyone who wasn't truly hardcore. Most of you are way too young to be running around talking about you're hardcore. You're not hardcore, you're kids with $500 consoles and no respect or appreciation for gaming.

We're finally at a point where gaming is open to everyone. We are at a point where even grandma's are playing, where there is something for everyone and all you asses want to do is seperate yourselves reminiscing about the "good old days" that you didn't live.

Gaming is for everyone. There are games and experiences to be had by all walks of life. Stop being such assholes.

XabiDaChosenOne4707d ago

@mendicant
"What number of exclusives qualifies you for being hardcore then? What genre of games makes you hardcore?" Dumbest question ever, completely irrelevant to the topic at hand. This is not about who has more exclusives or what genre determines if your hardcore or not. This is about the line up of games that a particular company is offering and the fact that the majority of its future titles do not cater to the fanbase that the brand was original catered.
"Tell me how exclusives translate into a better console?" More games doesn't equal better console? You do know that multiplats plus exclusives=more games than a console that relies mostly on exclusives right?
"Steel battalion, Project D, Rise of Nightmares"
None of these games have a official release date. Heck one of them doesn't even have an official name yet. I can't believe supposed core gamers people are defending Microsoft, its pitiful. Their attention is aimed at the casuals. DEAL WITH IT!

Why o why4707d ago

'i don't think they care much for studios'

you reckon, studio acquisition and upkeep is NOT at the top of MS's 'how to rake it in' guidebook.

I can understand why MS doesnt wanna swap but if you cant see that they are rapidly heading in Nintendo's direction you're in denial

firemassacre4707d ago (Edited 4707d ago )

so what we have is a console that supports multiplatform games, they have nearly canceled out much of there exclusive studios, and they have abandoned there hardcore base that made them what they are today. so now they are trying to get a piece of the wii's money by going casual and keeping the 360 on auto for many more years.

Microsoft's Absurd Antics Have Me Scared For Dishonored And Arkane Lyon's Future

With Arkane Austin no more and Lyon living for who knows how long, the superb Dishonored is in serious danger; Microsoft cannot be trusted.

I love the Dishonored series so much and really want Dishonored 3. Microsoft better not screw this up.

I mean, I think the fans will probably kill Arkane Lyon by cooking up reasons to hate whatever they do next without playing it. I've never seen a game so artificially disliked as Deathloop.

There won't be no more acquiring game publishers from Microsoft in the future . Xbox has to pay Microsoft back. It might take two decades to do that.

sagapo2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I don’t understand what you’re saying. Xbox IS microsoft so there’s no “paying back “.
And MS gross profit in 2023 was over 140 billion dollars so forget your 2 decades.

Unless you mean the money MS invested in Xbox (acquisitions included) and the time it will take for xbox as a brand to gain that money back on it’s own, then yeah, that could take a while.

romulus231d 21h ago

The better term to use might be return on investment, xbox is simply a division of Microsoft one that MS can easily do away with if profit margins are not met. So in that regard he's right, if xbox isn't showing the expected return on investment the higher ups are expecting than it's unlikely Microsoft will acquire any other studios any time soon, especially if they are spending billions buying developers just to shut them down in the end.

MrBaskerville1d 13h ago (Edited 1d 13h ago )

Xbox is a division that they discussed shutting down but doubled down on after Gamepass was pitched.

It needs to make money at some point. Big money.

KwietStorm_BLM1d 13h ago

So you do understand it or..?

rokos1d 11h ago

According to Statista the net income of Microsoft is about $72.4 billion dollars which is a bit lower than last year profit. That is almost as much as Activision's acquisition but I assume that would be a one off since it costs so much plus I see how their focus has been shifted to AI, thus any major future investments will probably be in that area.

Markusb331d 10h ago

i think you are really missing the point

VariantAEC1d 1h ago

@romulus23
That is not why MS buys studios. They might continue to buy because it's about taking that sweet sweet IP out of the corporate husks of their acquisitions.

Xbox isn’t a separate company from Microsoft. It’s all Microsoft.

Abear211d 9h ago (Edited 1d 9h ago )

Let’s be real, this is the media spinning all the acquisitions and liquidations of said developers and spinning it to make M$ the villain.

This was bound to happen, a bigger slice of pie and cut costs, when the games come they stand to make more and that’s their agenda—it was the writing on the wall when the sales went through and legally all those who approved the sale and mergers knew this would happen.

Snowflakes need to realize business is ugly and you can cry all you want but this is how capitalism works. And it works.

That said, M$ needs to steer the narrative and grab hold of all this, make their plans known, hype the hell out of all those dead IP’s they plan to revive, and be honest about the timeline. This is likely to involve mobile and IP on other consoles, and most people realize that.

The problem is this company is incapable of being transparent and seems to often want to dissuade and confuse is customer base. The lack of E3 has hurt Microsoft and I don’t think they know how to properly or effectively market their brand anymore.

jwillj2k42d ago

There really needs to be a class action lawsuit here. You buy these companies just to put people out of jobs. And it’s not like something happened to derail their plans this WAS the plan. Microsoft has no business in this space at all.

franwex2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Microsoft has been doing this for years. They simply want the IPs. Look at Nokia. Look at Skype. This time it simply expanded to games. Gaming is not as important to Microsoft’s executives as it was to the founders too. Bill Gates was willing to sell the og Xbox at a loss. Steve Balmer approved the red ring of death fiasco. This CEO isn’t really a gamer.

-Foxtrot2d ago

Maybe it's time though to put a stop to it and use a big giant like Microsoft as a huge example to the rest of these big companies.

There has to be a line drawn somewhere.

People like the FTC and the like went against Microsoft yet their Actvision deal was still allowed to go through yet look what's happened...it's not even Acitivisions studios aswell, it's Bethesdas.

VariantAEC1d 1h ago

Years?

Try several decades, and in the gaming space 2.3 decades.

Jon615861d 10h ago

You do realize this happens in ALL industries? Or are you just saying this because it is Microsoft? In any case I feel for those that are being let go but the trch industry is suffering right now.

jwillj2k41d 5h ago (Edited 1d 5h ago )

This absolutely does NOT happen all the time. Let me know the last time 1 company with a terrible product track record spent 100 billion onto acquire MULTIPLE successful companies in under a year only to shut them down and stop making their products regardless of how successful they were. Not merge them, completely shut them down.

And you can’t use Microsoft in your example.

Notellin1d 6h ago (Edited 1d 6h ago )

Class action lawsuit? The law is on their side and protects them at all costs. There are no rules to protect the people at the bottom.

jwillj2k41d 5h ago

Not true when it comes to mass layoff do your research.

RNTody2d ago

Ninja Theory, Perfect Dark, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Wolfenstein 3, Dishonored, Prey, Doom, Quake... something tells me that bad things are going to happen to these entities under Microsoft.

MrDead1d 19h ago

ID software, the makers of Doom and Wolfenstein that have been with us since 1991 could be gone and MS will keep the IPs.

I hope some of these studios can buy their freedom from MS otherwise this is going to be even more devastating for the industry and gamers.

Yui_Suzumiya1d 16h ago (Edited 1d 16h ago )

That's exactly what I'm worried about. I've been a fan of id since Wolfenstein 3D and I'm honestly afraid.

lodossrage1d 12h ago

Toys for Bob saw the writing on the wall and bought themselves out.

Wouldn't be the first time a company did that under MS either. Bungie and Twisted Pixel did the same. Considering what just happened, I can see some other devs trying to buy themselves out too.

anast2d ago

Good thing the bosses of all those small studios made their money.

glenn19792d ago

they cant do it right now they will get burned

XiNatsuDragnel1d 20h ago

Phil and his team need to be gone

lodossrage1d 12h ago (Edited 1d 12h ago )

Won't make a difference.

The whole structure needs to be overhauled. Anyone that replaces Phil will be no different than him, Mattrick, or anyone else.

Until the company changes how they go about business, nothing will change

glenn19791d 9h ago

I just don't have any idea what they would do , they have done sooo much damage on their xbox brand, they have a show at July or June I think, but will it even matter even they show amazing games, idkn

lodossrage1d 12h ago

True,

But they may as well get it over with. Whether it happens now or later, the burning is going to hit the same.

Reality is the ONE move that can alleviate a lot of this is the one move they can't make. Remove day 1 from gamepass.
