VGW: Sonic was a symbol of the life that existed outside the restrictions of the real world to my father. I think he held a fascination with the speed of Sonic — not merely for the sense of amusement, but for the rich metaphor of the diametrically opposed lives. The world my father inhabited was one that moved at a slow pace where minute details and intricacies stuck out; where people merely grew old just to die and cease to exist as nothing more than a memory. Sonic’s life and world stood for something that appealed to my father. It was a Neverneverland where the power of nature fought against the industrialization of the world. He played to prevent Sonic’s world from becoming the one he inhabited. He could not bear to see the Green Hill zones become some dreary world analogous to his own.
