Sessler's Soapbox: Call of Duty Elite

G4: "Yes the rumored "paid subscription service" for Call of Duty has been confirmed, and it's not quite what we were expecting. Of course, The Sess had plenty to say on the subject, so check out the new Sessler's Soapbox for his take on Call of Duty Elite.."

KingDustero4739d ago

Paying isn't always better. I get the EXACT same experience that I get on XBL on PSN.

After reading more into CoD Elite I see that it isn't such a bad thing. All the stat tracking and clans are free. To compete for stuff and get the map packs for "free" requires a subscription, which makes sense.

There'll probably be guns and perks that release later that'll require a CoD Elite subscription when that happens is probably when most of the sheep will start paying for it.

Paying to possibly win prizes is a waste of time since the only ones who will win will be those kids who play 24/7. Normal people will NEVER win these prizes.

Thus I'm liking all the detailed stat tracking Elite is going to offer, but I will NEVER pay for anything that it offers.

steam > xbl!

Staem gives dedicated servers & most new games now supporting cloud saving for free!!

Steam has better prices & game support is updated constantly!

Team Fortress 2 for instance has gotten 150+ updates & has coaching mode were a veteran player can Voltaire to watch you play & coach you on the right things to do! while the xbox version is dead in the water! Same for left 4 dead 2!

They also let you take in game screen shots & save it to cloud and/ or send them to facebook or twitter!

Paying is gay!

I agree...

Ever since I gave up on XBL and moved to Steam I've felt like I was getting shafted by MS. BC2 and vietnam expansion for 3.75 and 7.50? yes please!

MSpence5164739d ago

I am just going to say this, (disagree all you want).

Stop calling people sheep, they enjoy something, let them enjoy it. (I do not plan on subscribing to Elite, btw). aka Stop liking what I don't like.

Not everyone can afford to buy a PC good enough for gaming and would prefer to stay with a platform that everyone can afford. It would be very hard for me to try and convince someone to buy a PC to see if they would like it. It is mush easier and cheaper to test out the console market than it is the PC. Last but not least, most gamers already have a 360 or ps3, I can't count how many times I have met people and got their tags and met online (xbl or psn) to play.

Off topic so get rid of it if you must. Some people just need to take a look at the other side before making comments like calling people sheep.

AKissFromDaddy4739d ago (Edited 4739d ago )

If you're not getting shafted for buying a console, then they'll get you the content and games. If you play one game a year or just one game, most likely, you don't need a strong PC.

But if you play a lot of games that aren't exclusive to a platform, b/c of Steam, you'll always get the best deals. Valve doesn't pay for storage, shipping & packaging, paper, and DVDs so the savings trickle down. Investing in a PC saves you more money if you play a lot of games.

Think about this, a budget PC cost about $777(included $200 Windows 7 Pro). It not only plays games WAY BETTER than MOST stock PCs but it is a PC too. A console is only a console.

If you have a 250G 360 console($299), you have to pay $60/year to play online, 8 years of XBL and a console equal a budget PC. If you want to upgrade your PC, you do only parts of it. A new console, to the market, cost A LOT OF MONEY. I think at launch, PS3 was $600 and 360 was $500.........imagine next gen.

Then, you have $60 games. Only some PC games cost $60 like Battlefield 3 and Rage but most games come with discounts just for preordering then on Steam. Preorder Duke Nukem on Steam for $44.99 and you don't need to leave your house or wait for a package. You even get to predownload the game.

The PC I want to build is costing me $1800 b/c I want the best parts and I am saving up for it.

Graphics on PCs surpass consoles to Infinity and Beyond, most games come with both options of mouse/keyboard and controller, and a lot of PC games will never be on consoles but a lot console games are on PC.

In the end, having a computer and a gaming rig is better than having a console, especially with a platform like Steam to make it worth building a RIG.

PS. I bought 360 first in 2007 and PS3 in 2010 and the PS3 is now the only console worth owning b/c of its free online and too many exclusives.

Legion4739d ago (Edited 4739d ago )

Trying to think of how much I have spent in the past on updating my PC in an 8 year time period? I could have all three consoles and still have money left over to buy the next generation of consoles coming out for each system.

PCs are money pits. I need them because I use them to create media and Indie development. But I keep my gaming purely off PC. I even run my XNA test games through my Xbox 360. I don't enjoy playing on my PC and most of gamers feel the same.

It is the never ending battle of console versus PC. In the over all picture of it, PC players will never change their minds and console players will never change theirs.

Now Microsoft is trying to challenge that philosophy by looking at the future possablity of being able to play Xbox 360 titles on the PC hardware when they move into the next generation. This brings about an interesting turn in production thoughts. And might wake back up the PC world to gaming. As currently only few survivng gamers have kept a grip on their PC gaming experience. Leaving few developers the urge to create specifically for PC any more and instead think of the PC as only an alternate sight of revenue versus the system to create for. Ask the developers were the market is... they won't answer PC.

"8 years of XBL"

lol, really? the service is only 9years old at this point which started on last gen hardware. your talking about the cost of 8years of this service vs a PC that will go obsolete in 2-4 years depending on how much you like to keep up with current HW.

I built my PC's too but after a few years I said fuck it and left it to handle MMO's i wanted to play. it's not worth dumping all that money into a rig and turning around every year to upgrade. I'm happy with xbl, free psn, and any run o the mill MMO i might want to try instead of becoming a PC junkie that's obsessed with maxing current games.

AKissFromDaddy4739d ago

@Legion
You're different from me. I'm console gamer going to PC and it looks beautiful on the other side. I play the games my computer allows me to play until I make my RIG.

Additionally, to both Legion and maxcer, why do you need to keep upgrading my PC? If I can play games like Bad Company 2, Battlefield 3, Rage, Mass Effect, Crysis etc at the level my PS3 and 360 can, I'll be stoked but I'm aiming for 60+ FPS because its fun to watch people play at that level. I'm excited just thinking about PLAYING at that level.

I sure though I'm building my BEAST RIG, better parts will become available, but I'm satisfied with just my games being cheaper and looking better. I'll upgrade my rig with each new generation of consoles.

Legion4739d ago (Edited 4739d ago )

It's funny that this is a video report on Call of Duty Elite but the first think people focus on is that of the XBL reference in the report.

As for the liking the Elite status for the tracking portion of it. Well Bungie offers that for free on their site for Reach and charges extra only for those that wish to upgrade their storage for extra media storage and access to video conversion. Wish that more companies would look at Bungie as an example.

"working out well for all involved"? Oh Sessler, you naive person, you. This doesn't mean that SP and MP will suddenly become separate entities. If fact, look what game series is treading these waters; Call of Duty - the series that's been spitting out short campaigns packaged with glitch-tastic multiplayer play for a long while.

They're STILL going to have you pay for a short campaign with a MP that you either don't have access to or limited access to (Including things as basic as MATCHMAKING). You finish the short campaign, want more, and the sheeple pay you even MORE money to get that content.

This means fatter wallets for Activision CEOs and even more strain on gamers. Activision is NOT going to have its studios "waste" more time on fixing things when the sheeple will pay for the "extra" features that were free in previous titles and free in several other game series.

Whose side are you on, Sessler, that you would spin this so hard and nonsensically? Obviously not the gamers'

Rolling the Dice: Do Modern RPGs Miss the Point of Team-Based Play?

It seems it was long time ago. A bunch of friends spending hours on end playing RPG games, sitting around the table with the box of cold pizza. Excited about the story, listening to the Game Master, they were completely engaged in the worlds only visible to them and their imaginations.

The GM is the programmer, and in MMOs and co-ops, you can play with others. If you want to ONLY use your imagination for the visuals, read a book.

1) Hope they put it on disc this time.
2) Hope this is a positive for Neptune coming over as well.

Demons Souls5096d ago

If so, that's being developed & published by Idea Factory. Compile Heart has nothing to do with it (Thank God for that).

Godmars2905096d ago (Edited 5096d ago )

Thought Compile Heart was one of the companies lending characters.

Was also speaking in general as in regards to a US of Neptune. If these guys are offing a second game, NIS or Atlus, both of whom offer quirkier titles, will put that one out.

@kagon01:
My issue isn't - wholly - with the DL-only option, but the price. The first game should be $30. Maybe $40, and by that I mean $39.99. The only reason its $45 is the 360 disc version which has extras. Nevermind that by all rights its a PS2 game. Something that proabbly could have been done if the devs had the GOW2 engine or tools.

ClownBelt5096d ago

I approve of this god damn message.

Could have gotten my 60 bucks if they just put it on a disc.

Jack-Pyro5096d ago

Is this a half decent SRPG, porn aside, cause if it is, i might just decide to go and buy it for the 360.

Anon73495096d ago

There's no porn just some sexual innuendos but that's it.

Also it is a great game by itself, maybe not graphically but everything else is top tier.

RedDevils5096d ago

so it had some kind of "top tier" porn story jk

ThanatosDMC5096d ago

Yup, it's a decent game. I just hate that a move has to go first before any attack options.
