Innovative games are "broken" for a reason (Bitmob)

Why do we treat innovative games the same as those that offer "more of the same" when they both have been created in the same amount of time? We should be more tolerant with glitches and design flaws in original titles compared to the same problems in sequels.

rod_furlong4741d ago

Yeahhhh maybe, but is it necessarily the consumer's job to sponsor innovation? The game has to be good first!

soundslike4741d ago

"but is it necessarily the consumer's job to sponsor innovation?"

not sure if serious...

"but is it the citizen's job to vote?"

hazelamy4741d ago

but you don't support bad innovations just because they're new.
any innovation has to make things better or it's worthless.

i mean a racing game where you don't have any control over the throttle might be considered innovative, but is it better?
i don't think so.

admiralvic4741d ago

A lot of people buy into the fallacy that different is automatically better. Over writing a long thing no one is going to read ill make it simple (yays?)

If people arnt critical of your work; then how do you know what is right and wrong? If we expect QA teams to do everything... then how does a game like BRINK come off as acceptable?

Xof4741d ago (Edited 4741d ago )

A lot of the problem stems from the fact that a lot of people don't know what "innovative" means.

A lot of gamers (and a lot of people in the gaming media these days) really have VERY little experience with older games, so when they see any game that does something different than the generic shooter they expect, they declare it innovative. They deem it new and, by virtue of its newness, better, simply because they're ignorant of the precedent.

Whereas older gamers and/or gamers who have more experience are better able to examine these games side-by-side with games that took a similar approach, and judge them more objectively.

Too many people these days, both the public and professionals, are too quick to lavish anything "new to them" with praise and overlook the faults simply because the gaming, in general, has become increasinly homogenous over the past five years and they are simply ignorant of much of what came before. This allows them to ignore the many faults and legitimate complaints, and tout these games as pinnacles of their respective genres when it simply isn't true. See Heavy Rain, Mass Effect, or any RTS or FPS published in the last decade.

Incredible story.

SheenuTheLegend82d ago

all the games in the above list are bang on. this is the only reason we need backwards compatibility and physical presense of games for the upcoming future, no matter what.

Yi-Long83d ago

Honorable mention to the excellent Driveclub, one of the best racing games of all-time and one of my favourite games ever.

melons83d ago

yes! incredible rain effects; so good to drive along in rain with your Spotify playlist blaring

Skuletor83d ago

I really wanted a MotorStorm using the same engine, Driveclub is easily one of the best looking games on PS4 and I'm surprised they didn't even give it a PS4 Pro patch.

ravens5282d ago

Yes indeed. May just install it on my PS5. You know, physical copy and all.

monkey60282d ago

I adored Driveclub and the Bike expansion. I also loved Motorstorm. Evolution shutting down was a crime

Outrun Online Arcade, Sega Rally Online Arcade, After Burner Climax... all good stuff. I keep my 360 hooked up to play these as well as the TMNT games that were also delisted.

Skuletor83d ago

Terry_B83d ago (Edited 83d ago )

I had no idea that Bad Company 2 was still running, and only now that I know, I want to jump on! 😥

I was able to find games in the Vietnam dlc on ps3 the last week. There were articles on here about the server closure when it was announced in April

DaReapa157d ago

BF1943 is the only online MP game that I was genuinely interested in. Been playing since launch 14 years ago. Hate that I couldn't put in as much time to play as I'd hoped for during the final week.

Inverno157d ago

I got really into 43 when I bought Bf3, and preferred it. Everything that I disliked or found annoying about Bf3, wasn't an issue in 43. Too bad they never bothered releasing it on PS4 or PC.

1nsomniac156d ago (Edited 156d ago )

Dead Space 2...... I wasn't even aware that had multiplayer. Nevermind that it was apparently one of their best multiplayers!

anast156d ago

Once people stop buying micros, these companies close the doors.

Xenial156d ago

Dead Space 2 multiplayer had been hanging on for years - I'd boot my PS3 up to see some familiar names in lobbies. This will definitely be missed!
