Don’t Judge a Kick Ass Gears of War 3 Player by His Rank

Two years ago, gamer Aldo Cauvi started losing his hearing. Then, things got worse. Last year, he lost his hearing completely. And his job. This year, he needed something to keep going. That was Gears of War 3.

On April 18, Cauvi began the Gears 3 beta, and by May 15 at 5pm EST, Cauvi hit Rank 100, apparently the first player to do so.

The level of dedication and skill this has taken is to be admired. The good thing is that he only did this to prove he could be first in anything he wanted to. For what I know, he's back to normal now, in terms of gaming... He still needs to have a surgery to have his hearing back though.

Why was this article written? Please explain it to me. It's an "inspirational" story about a guy who's deaf and achieved rank 100 in Gears 3 because he doesn't do anything else than eat, sleep and game. Sorry if I'm being insensitive here but I really don't think being deaf is that big of a disadvantage when it comes to gaming. Obviously most other players have an advantage over you but it's not like he's:

Yeah he's first, so what? All he did is play Gears 3, he barely slept for crying out loud! Not Impressed!

Are you deaf? I doubt since you seem to be ignorant about it. His handicap might not be the worse in your "list", but last time I checked, there wasn't a competition in who has the worse handicap. It's still a handicap none-the-less and a barrier he overcomed in a field where having a handicap is a huge disadvantage to prove he can do anything he sets himself to do. All I got from your comment was "jealousy" lay-off the haterade dude. Just like in the cyber/real world handicaps put you in a limitation and he lost his job cause of his handicap. You don't know how he feels in both losing his hearing completely and his job. accomplishing this inspired him and hopefuly others who face similar handicaps. More power to them to find stories that regardless of their handicap they can still enjoy things like the norm even if it's not the worse of a handicap

If he was the greatest Gears player in the world, meaning in terms of skill, then yes, I'd be slightly impressed. All he's done now is play A LOT, you don't need good hearing to play insane amounts of video games. So no, still not impressed. Good for him on attaining his personal goal though, kind of weird, but hey, congrats

You know what would have impressed me? If he'd stopped playing games and gotten a job, despite it being very difficult for hearing-impaired people to find jobs. I'd also have been impressed if he'd attained straight A's in school/university.

And lol, no, not jelly at all. I don't see how anyone could be jelaous of a person who willingly dedicates a month of his life to achieve a high rank in a videogame... I don't know, seems fucking stupid if you ask me. Especially when he supposedly could fix his hearing if he only had an income.
