A handful of gameplay modes litter Rio’s menu screen, though as the game is playable by up to four players offline – no online multiplayer is available whatsoever – a player can jump in at any point during any game, so it’s really just a choice of what fashion to play your mini-games in. The Story Mode offers sequences introduced by various characters from the game as players progress along a map, beginning in Minnesota and working your way to Rio de Janerio, playing a new selection of mini-games at each new location along the way. It’s hardly inspiring stuff, but with the occasional clip from the film and plenty of speech samples, it’s not exactly poorly produced.

Rio from the makers of Ice Age is a movie tie-in party game from the same name which includes over forty mini-games using six playable characters, Blu, Jewel, Pedro, Nico, Raphael, and Eva in a brightly coloured action packed Carnival theme. Although also on PlayStation 3 and Wii, the Xbox 360 version has three additional exclusive mini-games.

Given the game’s reliance on competition, it’s a great shame that Rio doesn’t include any online gameplay. Though it offers drop-in gameplay for up to four players on a single system, the only use of the PlayStation Network Rio makes is that of the now essential Trophies.
