Dean's Take on NPD numbers for September

This is clearly going to be the best year in video game history. NPD is predicting $17 billion to $18 billion for the year. The question is whether this is a temporary Halo 3 bubble or it just keeps on getting better from here on out.

"One piece of news that came out this week was that Sony pleaded with third-party developers not to abandon its struggling platform. That change in attitude is a marked difference compared to the arrogance of past years. The argument is that the PS 3 will show its strength as developers learn how to make games for it. But developers know they can staff four or five Wii teams with the same number of people it takes to make one PS 3 game. We may have a glut of Wii games soon, but that’s not as bad as not having enough games on the PS 3."

"This is clearly going to be the best year in video game history. NPD is predicting $17 billion to $18 billion for the year."

"Sales in the U.S. were up 74 percent to $1.3 billion in September compared to a year ago. Surely this is the year the game industry eclipses music sales..."

"The Xbox 360 sold 527,800 consoles in the month, while Halo 3 sold 3.3 million copies during just 12 days of sales at the end of the month. And remember, that is just a U.S. number for Halo 3 sales. The 360 finally outsold the Wii, which sold 501,000 units. Overall, the 360 sales grew 50 percent from August, which was a strong month because of the benefit of the $50 price cut. Moreover, Microsoft noted that Xbox 360 software outsold PS 3 software eight to one and Wii software by four to one."

"The Xbox 360 is going to have a good season with games like “Mass Effect” and “Call of Duty 4” still to come. Yes, I know it’s also on the PS 3. But clearly it will sell more units on the Xbox 360. We’ll have to see the October numbers, but I expect that the Halo 3 blast radius is still going to have an effect, as will the entry of the $399 PS 3. As Frazier says, content is going to move hardware. With Super Smash Bros. pushing out, Microsoft looks like it has some of the strongest games yet to come in the season. Nintendo still has Super Mario Galaxy, and Sony will have to cross its fingers on Ratchet."

It'll be a record year for the Gaming Industry, hopefully next year too ! WE reap the rewards of all the great games we are getting this Fall, & all through 2008 & on & on....

Good Stuff. How 'bout those U.S. sales numbers up 74 % !!!

Microsoft is racking in that money thats good because eventually the Xbox will be the dominant platform maybe not this generation but surely the next. Microsoft will dominate the gaming scene if they keep up the good games and amazing xbox live service.

I just like to note that for the 360 he forgot Ace Combat 6, and for the PS3 he forgot Uncharted and Haze. Why do these analyst always leave things out?

The Games Industry Continues To Wonder What Is The Point Of Its Own Existence

While many gaming layoffs are cruel, Tango Gameworks being culled after Hi-Fi Rush doesn't even make sense.

Good read. I think the point is important. Cuz the message it sends is, make a bad game? Well shut you down. Make a good game? We still might shut you down. How the fuck are you supposed to feel any sense of job security under those conditions. The level of core incompetence at play in the upper levels of this industry is staggering. This is common sense shit. You can’t chase trends on a 2 year cycle when games take fucking 6-8 years to make. Just let artists fucking art for gods sake. They don’t understand the basic principle that they’re all haggling for the same slice of fucking pie and the market will not bear it. Find a different fucking pie.

Might be a great game but it clearly did not make enough money to justify having the team make another game (under the MS umbrella).

It's never been just about whether your game is good or bad. The industry is full of great/underrated games that have a cult following or critical acclaim, but that fail to make great sales. Sad but true. It's a high stakes game, and at the end of the day, companies have to be profitable and make profitable investments. At the very least, there has to be the expectation of a long-term profit even if not profitable today. That goes for anything, no matter if the company is gigantic or a tiny mom-and-pop. We don't have to like it, but our buying habits played a hand in creating this monster.

I will keep harping that the industry has overreached its actual market and that it will implode. That implosion is already starting.

“…make a bad game? Well shut you down. Make a good game? We still might shut you down.”

I got chills. It shouldn’t have come to this.
