Call of Duty Level of Success is Possible for Homefront, says THQ

Call of Duty remains the king of shooters, as both Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops have set entertainment records, and Activision's franchise definitely has a target on its back as competitors are gunning to take away the shooter crown. EA believes Battlefield can be that franchise this fall with Battlefield 3, and THQ believes it's positioning itself well in the fight with Homefront. IndustryGamers recently spoke with THQ CEO Brian Farrell and asked him point blank if Homefront or any THQ IP can reach a tremendous number like Black Ops' nearly 14 million sold in the U.S.

I would agree that it's not, but what Farrell is saying is over time as they continue the franchise they think they can get to CoD success levels. I still don't think that'll happen though.

Maybe the franchise as a whole can reach one cod game in sales but not one homefront game. The reason that homefront sold so well was because it had a lot of pre-orders because of its cool concept, future games won't do as well

@rabidpancakeburglar you are 100% right. you can only fool me once.

They fooled me twice, I bought Frontlines too !

I think you should read the article. They're saying over time with more games. Like COD for example didn't sell 18 million with their first game, took them time to build up to that. Homefront being a new IP and especially a FPS, they're doing great. With an upcoming demo that could lead to more sales, then a sequel to fix their mistakes with the first game, it's definitely possible to get high up there if they continue to support this franchise.

I bet people said Call of Duty would never sell 18 million units back with their first few games, and now they are. Anything is possible.

Sure. But if you consider that Homefront was such crappy game THQ is dreaming that they can build a franchise on top of that. Since they have that new CEO, though, their marketing at least has ambitions. Good for them. I hope they'll make some money and invest into technology for once. Ever engine THQ studios use is second class. Almost worse than Activision. At least there they match them already. I think they lost reputation with Homefront, though.

why cant these devs just focus on making a great game, instead of having the "success" of COD.

IMO, the cod series has gone downhill since COD 4, even though they keep selling more and more.

with COD 4 IW wasn't trying to have a hugely selling game that mimics the success of something else, they were trying to make a great game across multiple platforms. They succeeded. and the huge sales came after they had made a great game.

I think the devs are focused on making great games; it's the executives and marketers who do the talking though, and thus what you hear about it beating top titles like CoD.

Yea if you're willing to milk it yearly such a pitty a developer has to step down to that level.

slavish34757d ago (Edited 4757d ago )

thq cuts way to many cornes to reach that level sorry! homefront single player was a bad version of mw2. it was to much of a copy and looked uglier even though it came out years later!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alex & Mike talk Biomutant, a game from Experiment 101/THQ Nordiq you likely have not heard of. While the AAA side of the industry tends to homogenization and imitative, cinematic presentation, “AA” games remain creative and innovative in 2021. Drawing on inspirations as varied as Dark Souls, third person shooters & kung fu cinema, Biomutant is Ratchet & Clank on acid, developed by a team of 20 people.

THQ's Golden Wii, Meant for the Queen of England, has been Found

Remember THQ? They published such games as Avatar: The Last Airbender, Darksiders I & II, the Destroy All Humans series, Homefront, the Red Faction series, and Saint's Row 1-3. Almost as famous as their games were the THQ marketing stunts, including a Golden Wii.
