PSN network failure: What happened, who's to blame and when it'll get fixed

CVG: 80710a06' is the error message you receive when you try to sign into your PlayStation Network account (PSN) on your PS3, which has now been inactive since Weds 20th April - almost six days already. While you can still use your PS3 for offline gaming and watching Blu-rays, no-one can access the PSN store to buy games, rent videos or download DLC. Services such as LoveFilm and Qriocity are also off limits. Worst of all, it's now impossible to play games online, from Call of Duty: Black Ops to recent releases like Portal 2 and Mortal Kombat.

I wish i had the money for an xbox360.

Schism204766d ago

Why your not really missing out on anything at the moment unless you have a Gears 3 beta code.

Raven_Nomad4766d ago

Well actually he could be playing a host of games, like Portal 2, with online. Mortal Kombat with Online ect....

Loner4766d ago

Pretty sure hes missing out on online play.

gamingdroid4766d ago

Gears of war 3 is fantastic. Started playing after dinner, and didn't know it was midnight!

I hadn't had time to play in months, and was shocked at how much time I spent.

DragonKnight4766d ago

@Raven: When you buy the PS3 version of Portal 2, you get a free PC copy. So yeah, he can play Portal 2 online. And oh no, you have to play Single Player Mortal Kombat? *gasp* That's never ever happened before. Except it has, for ever prior MK game before the latest one. Honestly, you younger gamers seriously need priorities if you think online makes or breaks your gaming experience.

Try gaming for over 2 decades without online and then whine because of the lack of it. If you do, you're just a whiner.

Scyrus4766d ago

raven or he could be playing MK with someone in the same room like its meant to be played, same with portal 2.......online hookers

rockleex4766d ago

Yea, and he would have to spend an ADDITIONAL $60 to play online on the 360 on top of the price of the 360 itself.

Apocwhen4766d ago

@DragonKnight: you need to be signed into PSN to link your account with Steam before you can download it for PC.

Oner4766d ago

I couldn't have said it any better myself DragonKnight. +Agree +Well Said

I have a 360. It's my second one actually after the first RROD'ed. But my live subscription ended months ago. I am so tempted to renew it but it's sort of dry right now in terms of 360 exclusives.

lee_ten4766d ago

...my god, you're acting as if your dog died or something. here, give me your ps3. i can use another one at my house. -_-

xstation794766d ago

Trade in your ps3 and get one

dalibor4766d ago

"I wish i had the money for an xbox360"

What for? To be able to play online? Sony has provided free online gaming for the past 5 years and yet all you people just try to nag on Sony for the PSN being down for a week. Pathetic. Thanks Sony for giving us gamers a way to game online for free for the past 5 years is all I'm going to say. PSN will be up sooner or later. I'm sure you can survive without online play for a while. If not than get a 360, play on PC or Wii it's that simple.

omg another topic please stop it we don't need anymore who to blame articles -_- we don't need to have a estimate of when it will get fixed all we know is it will -_-

joydestroy4766d ago (Edited 4766d ago )

it's complete horse sh*t that Sony won't even issue an official statement as to why it's down, what's being worked on, and an estimated time that it will be back online. their silence is only making the situation worse.

DragonKnight4766d ago

Why? You know why it's down, and why do you need to know exactly what's being worked on? It's not like you have an interest in PSN from a developer standpoint or like you pay for PSN at all. If you know why it's down, what more do you REALLY need to know and how will it help? You know that there will still be posts made about how people are pissed off that it's still down, only thing that will be different is that the added complain of "how can fixing ______ take so long, Sony are incompetent."

joydestroy4766d ago (Edited 4766d ago )

actually, i have no idea as to why it's down, since no official statement has been released by Sony. citing "external intrusion" is extremely vague. from a developer standpoint... i'm actually in college studying to be a programmer.

i don't care about the articles and what not. i just want some info. like most other folks.

being kept in the dark can mean many things, including them not having a clue as to how to fix whatever the issue/s is/are and when it'll be back up. glad i'm not a PS+ user.

DragonKnight4766d ago

Yes you do know why it's down. External Intrusion is not at all vague. It literally means someone from the outside got in where they aren't supposed to. All you're asking for is how far and who. And be honest, would knowing that information make the wait lessen in time at all? No. Would you instantly NOT be upset that you can't play online? Probably not. Fact of the matter remains is that you do know what happened, just not to an area that satisfies you.

It's not the obligation of anyone to provide information that will satisfy you since you're not paying for PSN, and you were told that the system was attacked from the outside. What possible information could actually be relevant?

joydestroy4766d ago

do you not think it's strange that they haven't detailed wtf is going on???

that is my point. being kept in the dark isn't cool, i don't care what it's about.

i didn't say anything regarding PSN being down until today. i have no problem with it being down for a couple days, even a few...but it's been a week almost. was the PSN really that broken to begin with?

DragonKnight4766d ago

No, I don't think it's strange they haven't given details. Think about it, they release a statement detailing exactly what happened and how they're fixing it, then the hackers know what to attack next time.

Plus, knowing the details IS IRRELEVANT. The facts are as follows.

PSN was attacked from the outside. Sony discovered the attack and shut down PSN to prevent further intrusions and began rebuilding their security.

That's what happened, and that's what is important. What else could possibly matter?

Point, Set & Match...Game ~ DragonKnight

joydestroy4766d ago (Edited 4766d ago )

actually... now that they've told us what happened... i think we deserved to know SOONER that our personal info has been compromised

please, raise your hand if you like to wait to find out when someone has stolen your info...

lee_ten4766d ago

maybe there's a *REASON* why they haven't issued a statement? we already have enough stupid articles as it is. we don't need anymore.

aquamala4766d ago

There wouldn't be speculation if there's an official statement why it's down for so long

leogets4766d ago

not another site saying old news. daym!!!!

Neo Nugget4766d ago

I like how the title suggests they give a specific time frame for the network being brought back online. All it says is this:

"We're guessing/hoping this is a case of the classic 'under-promise and over-deliver' PR strategy, so the rumours about an indefinite delay actually result in only another day or so without PSN."

Steam's highest-rated game is now less than a dollar in the Spring Sale

Jack writes: "Yet again browsing the latest offers in the Steam Spring Sale has led us to track down the very best. In terms of price to quality, we don’t think that it gets much better than this. Portal 2 is now less than a dollar, and if you haven’t got it already, now is the time to pick it up."

TheEroica55d ago

Portal deserves to be one of steams highest rated games... It's almost tetris levels of perfect game design.

TheEnigma31355d ago

It's a great game, but highly overrated. But for $1, it's an amazon deal.

Friendlygamer55d ago

Valve should bring their games to ps5

Kados54d ago (Edited 54d ago )

Gotta love Steam. Just got Portal 2 for .97 cents CAD. Should have been $1.29, selected the bundle with Portal 1 and 2, which gets a 25% discount, already have Portal 1, so it removes the cost of that, and still applies the full 25% bundle discount to Portal 2. 90% + 25% discount.

Friendlygamer54d ago

That's sweet, I've been thinking about building a modest pc to play some oldies

Infinite but not the first two games? Witcher 3 but not the first two games?? GTA V but not literally any of the games before it??? Portal 2 but not the first? Also if you're going to play Shadow of The Colossus play the remaster and not the remake. Can't say I disagree with the list but my man it's all over the place.

Name Last Name62d ago

I mean some sequels are objectively better and you don’t need to play the whole series.

Inverno62d ago

But most of these games have a story to follow, sure you can catch up with a YouTube vid but where's the fun in that?

LucasRuinedChildhood62d ago (Edited 62d ago )

A list like this isn't telling you not to play the previous games if you want to. It's just giving you legendary games to play.

But tbh, you don't always have to force yourself to play every entry in a franchise to get to the better ones.

- The vast majority of Witcher 3 players never played the first 2 and had a great time. The first 2 games aren't in the same league.
- The GTA games are self-contained with the odd fun reference. You can easily jump into any of them.
- The Shadow Of The Colossus remake looks and controls better than the original (plus it has a 60fps option while the remaster is just 30fps). New players will enjoy it more.
- Portal 2 is a lot better than Portal 1 and takes the concept much further gameplay-wise. Storywise, Portal 1 is fairly light too. Not that you shouldn't play it but realistically ... you'd love Portal 2 whether you play it or not (at lot of Portal 2 players have never played 1).

Bioshock 1 is the only one I agree with you on simply because it's one the best games of all time and arguably better than Infinite. No other setting like Rapture.

Looking at the list, I'd recommend playing Uncharted 1 before 2 but no doubt, 2 is the legendary one you have to play.

Inverno62d ago

I get it, but that's just my opinion on his opinion. I just think that before you play a sequel you should still play what came before it. Maybe it's just me but i find it fascinating playing through the first game in a series and seeing how it has evolved through its sequels. Like I said I don't disagree with the list, other than SoTC which I strongly believe the remaster of the original should be played above the remake.

AuraAbjure61d ago

Awesome list! Hot take on Fear (and it's hard af expansion Persaus Mandate!) Bioshock Infinite is stellar, so is the Witcher 3 and you nailed it by having Ocarina of Time. So many fantastic games! Gotta play 'em all! Next one on my list is Prey after I beat Dead Space 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction.

valve suck so much at making games now, opting just to smaug on top of an enormous pile of money,
that fans got so desperate that they have to make their own games.
this industry is fucking over.
