PSN Upgrade a Better Reimbursement

PCN: "With that being said, this isn’t Sony’s fault. Why is everyone jumping to the conclusion that Sony owes us? Would you rather them leave it online and allow the hackers to steal your information? Allow the constant disconnects to frustrate the hell out of you? I didn’t think so. A major corporation is not going to give you updates about every step they take to fix a problem, otherwise they might as well hand the lock and key right to the hackers."

Interesting article.

EDIT:
Off Topic:
''You have been restricted from approving submissions''
Something is wrong with the approving system? I can't approve =O.

smoothdude4754d ago

It is down because GEOHOT settled and showed Sony how to block the potential hazards. So now Sony is fixing it to keep hackers out. Well that is one of the rumours that I have heard....

sdtarm4754d ago

I agree with the article

ziggurcat4754d ago

i think the reason its down is because jailbreakers were able to gain access to the developers network that essentially got them free content from the PS Store.

i think that patching the hole wouldn't have been enough to prevent any further intrusions and building it from the ground up was their only option to block the intrusion for good.

darthv724754d ago

We dont know what is really going on with psn. Sony could have taken it offline on purpose (like they claim) and we can blame the hackers (which we are) and in reality this could be a ploy by sony to drum up support for a more secure service requiring paid membership. Yeah that was a long run on sentence.

We know hackers are targeting sony but they themselves are also psn members so it wouldnt make sense to hit a service they themselves use. There is something strange about this situation and i dont know who to believe anymore.

aaronisbla4754d ago (Edited 4754d ago )

@ darthv72:

Non sense, do you realize how much they could potentially lose in daily revenue and the backlash they can receive since its down? Why would they do it to drum up support? This much trouble JUST to drum up support against hackers?Really?

If they took it down on purpose, it must have been something serious, like credit card information potentially being leaked. There isn't always some conspiracy behind things dude

darthv724754d ago (Edited 4754d ago )

yeah i know not everything is a conspiracy. Just for a second though it does seem possible to use the recent publicized attacks by anonymous to take advantage of the situation in sony's favor.

Playing victim when they were victim to the attacks a few days ago. Anonymous has stated they had nothing to do with what is going on now. Do we believe them...people will say of course not.

Does that mean they are telling the truth...we dont know. We do know sony isnt being completely straight with this situation. They are thinking they can make up whatever they want and people will believe it because they know how hated the hacker community is when it comes to messing with psn.

Conspiracy...no but there is something more to this than we are being told. There have already been people saying if it means having a better psn, they would pay. Think about that on a more grander scale for a second.

Heartnet4754d ago

Hmm i dont think that was part of the settlement and is high unlikely that Geo would have done that sine he hates sony and says he is Boycotting Sony products..

Ofc im not the end of knowledge so sorry if im wrong :)

zag4754d ago

It's a 2 way street.

I've had to fix up servers after hacks been done on them, sometimes it's easy and other times it's hard.

As you have to go through everything to see what has been changed, really it's more a pain and to stop the hacks going any further you just need to pull the server off the net, that kills any/all hacks straight up.

If hackers were gaining access to the Dev side then Sony will need to setup a firewall that blocks ALL unknown IP from the Dev server.

That will mean everything needs to come down and you need to make a safe list for the IPs you want in the server, once that is done you will need to do some tests to make sure things are working right, if they are then things can be brought back up.

Now that I think about it, Sony pulling the servers probably isn't what Anon thought Sony would do and they can't hack nor gain any access, and probably why they have been saying Sony is bad at the network side.

I think Sony pulling the servers off is a good thing as they can now radically change things and outsiders won't know what has been changed.

So it's a 2 way street Anon were public about their hacking of the servers and so Sony have pulled their servers down so things can be checked over.

It's not hard to completely stop hacking all you need is no servers running you can have open ports but if nothing accepts packets or requests then a hacker can't do anything, but it's hard if you have ANY servers running like having someone using MSN via a browser will open up a server port that can be abused.

So I'd say they'd be going over the whole network, Anon are also after Sony employee data so they will be far far more picky would hate to be there because everything will be on super lock down and every email, phone calls other stuff being checked over thoroughly.

Logs are probably being checked over and handed off to the FBI etc.

I wouldn't be surprised if some people do get picked up soon.

Ethereal4754d ago

Yea I agree with the above. This article is spot on. I honestly think this may have been in the cards already and the attack just jumped the priority a bit. They figured it's down from the attack we might as well rebuild it so its more stable. This downtime was going to happen either way. I would give a few days of PSN to make sure when I do get on it's stable and hack free. I say Sony did the right thing. No doubt it sucks but I had homework anyways =)

metsgaming4754d ago

very valid points in the article. The only thing is they are trying to rebuild the thing and want to get it up as fast as they can, they wont waste their time adding features to it thus delaying it further. Down the line they could but whos to say that wasnt going to happen anyway.

Max Power4754d ago

ALFA you must have approved articles with mistakes without reviewing them for those mistakes. I am sure a Mod will be able to answer that question more accurately.

mindedone4754d ago

Yea, I never approved articles, just rejected them,.

StanSmith4754d ago

All the people asking for compensation is kind of stupid. The only thing i think Sony owes PSN users, is a statement letting us know whether our credit card info had been comprimised, so we in turn can notify our banks ahead of any card fraud!

metsgaming4754d ago

that and to beef up their security and to see if they can find out who did this and do something about it.

Redlogic4754d ago

How crazy would it be that while they were patching the security hole, they added cross game chat....everyone would forget the down time in .5 seconds if they heard that.

jeeves864754d ago

@ redlogic

Just the suggestion made me forget. PSN Down-wha?

DOMination4754d ago

Look, none of us know the real reason so lets stop speculating until Sony gives us some answers.

Lets just all agree that Sony have taken it down for our own good and if it's been down this long then it must be serious.

flankhim4754d ago

The only reason they shut it down was so people would have to play socom 4 single player.

trancefreak4754d ago

Flat out Sonys closed end network should be tighter than a virgin on her wedding night.

Ya sh1t happens but this is a closed supposedly secure network we are talking about.

I dont think sony was ready this generation for such a large scale network or I should say its involution.

No one is perfect my cable carrier does the same crap but hopefully after this it will be a much tighter service.

How can you say it's not Sonys fault ? If their service was protected more this wouldn't have happened.

undercovrr4754d ago

Yup, I hate how many fanboys/journalists just jump to the conclusion that Sony is the victim. For all we know, Sony caused all this because of poor network protection. Or maybe this is just an excuse for them to finally upgrade their network. People have to remember that big corporations love manipulating consumers, no matter if they are Sony, Microsoft, etc.

ExPresident4754d ago

Yeah, Sony would shutdown their servers on a holiday weekend with three big title releases, Portal 2, MK, and Socom 4. That logic is terrible.

oneDMAC4754d ago

There is no such thing as a network that can not be hacked. There is always a way. If banks and even the pentagon can be hacked then why would you expect Sony to be unhackable?

trancefreak4754d ago (Edited 4754d ago )

seriously why people disagree with undercovrr.

Do you like knowing that your potential private info just might of got hacked.

Do you enjoy not getting on the network right now.

All love aside this is a problem and I don't care which company s fault it is its unacceptable.

Sony could say and update repair status and stay more in touch with their community. that is what its all about.

I feel bad for all the socomn'ers and portal gamers. How about little johnny and mom and pop going what the hell is wrong with my ps3. Maybe its my internet, maybe its my router.

Oh well when its over hopefully sony will bring some new features.

Graphics4754d ago

Why would people leave their credit card info on a console?? Letting their life depend on Sony.. A company that is not even that reliable.. When I found out sony dont use encryption on your stored credit info on psn I deleated my credit info immidiatly. You people deserve to get credit fraud. Hopefully Sony is actually doing something to improve psn speed wise because extra security helps gamers in no kind of way. This is another example of how sony says screw you gamers and go to the extreme to protect their money and selves, just like with other os removal. I 100% guarentee the shut down was because of the rebugged dev ps3 hack.

HappyGaming4754d ago

@Graphics your such a twat... what do you mean people deserve to be scammed for trusting Sony?

So when I registered my card with PSN I had to go on a search to find out how Sony encrypt their data?

As a consumer I assumed that unless a multi billion company knew how to secure credit card data they would not give you the option to back up your credit card data on their hardware :-/

I was almost agreeing with you until "you people deserve to get credit fraud".

Yeah that makes sense, I mean clearly if you leave your door unlocked you deserve to have your house broke into. Why on earth would we blame the criminal who did something he wasn't supposed to do anyway.

Octo14754d ago (Edited 4754d ago )

Works the other way too. If your PC got hacked regardless of the amount of security you have, is it fair to say that its your fault? An expert burglar can break into a house even though there's a security system installed. A good hacker will find a way. Nothing is "unhackable".
How is it Sony's fault that they got hacked? That like saying that its my fault that I got mugged because the stuff that I was wearing were all designer stuff.

BLAKHOODe4754d ago

My thoughts exactly. They're a major corporation, they should have the most top-notch security the world has to offer. What Sony did is like buying a kickass stereo system for your car and leaving your window rolled down overnight in a bad part of town. Even though somebody else CAUSED the problem, Sony, by not having better security, ALLOWED it to happen.

moparful994754d ago

These hackers spend hours upon hours writting code and dissecting code and to sit here and say that it's sony's fault for not having better security is ignorant and shows how little you know about the subject....

HappyGaming4754d ago

More like Sony sold a kick car with a big as stereo system and added every security method possible which caused the best thieves around to take it on as their challenge to steal the stereo and prove they are the best amongst themselves...

undercovrr4754d ago

I don't understand the multitude of disagrees you are getting, you are completely right. I guess the majority of this n4g community is Sony's little pet

radphil4754d ago (Edited 4754d ago )

"My thoughts exactly. They're a major corporation, they should have the most top-notch security the world has to offer."

And that's the ignorant thinking that gets people in trouble in the first place.

And I say ignorant because you're basically stating that just because one has a lot of money they should have the best stuff, which does not always goes hand in hand.

Soldierone4754d ago

Like stated....anything is hackable. Even the government has had holes found in it causing security measures to be taken. PSN is accessed daily by millions of people, so its a bit more known on it being down. However Amazon went down this week too...Yahoo has been down many times...Google has had issues before (hell Google even had a problem where personal information was leaked)

Fact is if it connects to the internet, a hacker can break into it. And if you still want to stand by your logic after that, then let me hack into your computer and steal your bank account information....its your fault for not stopping me. Doesnt matter if you have every virus, hacker proof program in the world, its still YOUR fault based on your assumption.

xsymbiot4754d ago

Nice post! I'm suprised that no one points out that Microsoft is more a software company than anything else.....you know....the biggest in the world and all. I dont have the exact data on me, but truth be told that when a version of windows is released, they average like 300 coding errors per 1000 lines of code. Whether this includes uneccessary code, badly written code, or code that contains errors....im not sure. To expect perfection out of something as big as sony/google/microsoft/amazon is just stupid. The bigger they get, the more problems they will have....logic is flawed.....software is logic.

Sony Patents To Prevent You From In-Game Harassment By Reading Your Emotions

A new patent recently published by Sony wants to gather biometric data of gamers to track whether one is being harassed using AI tools.

Profchaos5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

I hope this is one of those patents that never comes to fruition.

I already dislike the fact you can pay a significant amount for a online service buy associated games and content on said service and get banned from that service over potentially a misunderstanding the bans are already handed out for flimsy reasons

I'd rather see money invested in a ban that simply removes the offensive players ability to communicate with unknown players allow them to continue party chats with friends but not with Joe blow on cod.

exputers4d ago

Agreed. Blizzard recently banned a college Overwatch 2 player who's dependent for saying "shit." Pretty harsh.

Profchaos4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

How rediculas really. You can't say a word that's allowed in most PG films and prime time TV but the game is based around killing the enemy team using guns, explosives etc.

It's just backwards.

just_looken4d ago

What your talking about is called block list

In 2006 a spaceship dropped of the playstation 3/xbox 360 i say that that generation was the last great gen with game functions/tech that has yet to comeback

Anyhow the playstation 3 if you block listed a id they could not talk to you in chatroom with either text or voice. But that was pre mind fucked 2018 when people were more human than sheep.

But hey gta 6 is coming out billion dollar budget without a single player custom character creator and without singeplayer coop off/online something saints row 1-3 had on the xbox 360.

Because I have no trouble believing some bans would happen when in a private party for saying something wrong

SegaSaturn6694d ago

I want them to censor erotic content by measuring my groin temperature so i dont get too distracted while playing black ops 2.

Popsicle4d ago

Terrible idea. Not only do I not consent to providing my biometric data, the potential for mishandling biometric data is almost a certainty. Positive stress and negative stress can produce similar changes in biometrics. Interpreting the precise emotion a person is feeling is not only invasive but could be easily misconstrued. I hope this never comes to fruition.

You only speak for you and those who think like you, but most fans will support what they want. Playstation and PC fans are literally supporting Helldivers 2 and that is a gaas. Maybe you wouldn't, but many more would if they like it.

Huey_My_D_Long25d ago

@Redemption-64
Look, Im not making any judgement calls about this guy, but I will say that Helldivers 2 GaaS model is unique to Helldivers, and legit the only other game I can think of thats similiar was the Avengers game except HD2 pass is still better.
The fact that you can earn in game currency in a way that doesnt make you feel like you have to grind forever, as well you being able work on that pass that you bought...on your own time without a time limit...that right there is fucking huge to me, and I can't name any game other than avengers that avoided trapping players with FOMO logic...I think GaaS on HD2 shouldn't be compared to the rest of the industry...it should be copied.

Einhander197225d ago

Cacabunga

Helldivers 2...

Redemption-64

In Europe it's a 60 40 split favoring PC.
In the US its a 60 40 split favoring PS5.

So PlayStation owners supported the game just fine, it's not getting carried by PC or anything like that.

FinalFantasyFanatic25d ago

@just_looken,
I'm perfectly fine with the way Nintendo entered the mobile market, I never touched their mobile games, meanwhile, the console/handheld stayed the way it is. As for being a bean counter, he's probably going to reel in these massive budgets that Sony's studios have had lately, I haven't played Spiderman 2, but I cannot see how they almost tripled the budget for that game.

@Redemption-64,
That's an exception to the rule, I'm expecting a lot of these GAAS games from Sony to fail, to be fair, they only need a few to succeed, but I would have preferred that they put more of their resources into other types of games.

DivineHand12525d ago

True their monetization is driving players away and at the same time, their decision to chop out content and convoluted systems is keeping new players away from the game.

Joe91325d ago

I don't think that will happen based on how things worked out at Naughty Dog now that we know what we do, seems they had the option to fully commit to live service games or stay making single player experences so they gave up on their live service game. We are not sure how things came about with Bend making a live service game but I hope that was not a forced situation. Sony doesnt seem like they are forcing studios to switch up but we will see, Sony's bread and butter is single player games it is how they dominated the console market.

Obscure_Observer25d ago

Yeah, I though Sony learned something from all their failures in the LS segment under Bungie´s disastrous leadership and supervision which led to games been cancelled, studios closed and all the people laid off.

Looks like Bungie still plays a major role in Sony´s LS initiative and Sony is not backtracking on their GaaS plans.

S2Killinit25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

Are we forgetting that Destiny is also a highly successful franchise? I feel like that definitely deserves mention here.

Besides, there is no reason why a person cant learn from past experiences.

Joe91324d ago

I agree, people act as if Destiny flopped when it came out lol it took 9 to 10 years for the numbers to fall yet people are still playing it add the success of Helldivers 2 no wonder Sony is going forward down this path.

S2Killinit24d ago

Personally, I see no problem with Sony also having service games as long as they make good ones, and more importantly they deliver the AAA story driven games that they are known for. So yeah, I agree 100% with you.

I mean, this person made some pretty bad decisions at Bungie. I hope they've learned from them because I definitely don't see those type of ideas as good for PlaySation in general.

CrimsonWing6924d ago (Edited 24d ago )

Honestly, what’s to learn from? How to make people happily continuously dump money into a single game over its life-time? Buy season passes continuously for several years with a smile on our faces?

GaaS is a design decision that is everything wrong with this industry. The fact that Helldivers 2 did so well and people defend the monetization because it was $40 and is a fun game, scares the sh*t out of me to see that the door is open and all shift will probably be to replicate that in future games. We already know the ROI for traditional game dev cost isn’t doing it for them.

I thought with Jimbo leaving we’d see a change for the better… I’m not so sure now.

S2Killinit24d ago

Service games are being offered by everyone. Sony cannot afford to only create single player AAA games. No one can. They already said they will be doing both.

Abnor_Mal25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

Ps5 gamers in 2023 seemed to play more live service types of games, so regardless to how people feel about them, numbers don’t lie and Sony is going where the money is. I mean look at the excitement around Helldivers2, people are showing that they want live service games.

Christopher25d ago

They play long-time existing live service games like CoD, Fortnite, Apex Legends, Destiny 2, and the like. Mass majority of new live service games are considered failures and aren't moving gamers away from older games.

just_looken25d ago

Yep the huge issue with live service is they need paid players along with a reason to play them.

You forgot mobile market that also taps into that player base as well as the eve online style games there is only a certain amount of krakens/whales blind supporters compared to the amount of live service games we have its not sustainable math wise.

700 restaurants making food for every seat for 1000-3000 eaters just does not work out

Einhander197225d ago (Edited 25d ago )

Christopher

I am not a big live service fan and literally own zero of the games you listed, but that is not true, unless you call games that aren't the top games to be failures.

There are tons of live service games that are profitable.

Games don't have to be the biggest game ever they just need to make more than they cost.

I challenge you to show professionally prepared data that shows that more live service games fail than make enough to keep going.

Because all the data that I have seen shows that live service is less of a gamble than making a big AAA budget game which needs to survive off retail sales.

FinalFantasyFanatic25d ago

I sometimes wonder if we're at saturation point, where it's hard for a new game to join those ranks unless it's particularly exceptional, people only have so much time and money to devote to these types of games.

romulus2325d ago

Correction, they have no issue playing good live service games

shinoff218325d ago

Lol it's not even a quarter of the ps5s sold. Helldivers may have been a hit but let's not say most are enjoying it because truth is most(the real most ) don't care about it.

S2Killinit24d ago (Edited 24d ago )

I play what is fun. If a live service game is good I’ll play it as long as its not a money scheme which Helldivers is not.

And Im a single player gamer.

mastershredder25d ago

How do you kill a franchise that already been killed?
Destiny’s grind, cash-in-on-playbass-cha-Ching, and pop-culture-insertion mainstream-me-too bs totally killed any rep Bungie had. Sony/Bungie, if you are doing this to ward-off players, it’s already working.
