Current Consoles Are Still Capable Of Some Amazing Graphics (Like These)

With all this Wii 2 talk, it's easy to forget the fact we're stuck with the Xbox 360 and PS3 for another three years. Just because they're getting a little long in the tooth, though, doesn't make them slouches in the graphics department.

This is a technical demonstration put together by tri-Ace, the Japanese development studio best known for its Star Ocean role-playing games. Normally renowned for its gorgeous cinematics, this clip shows they're no slouches when it comes to making real-time graphics sing either.

Can anybody explain what is soooo impressive about this vid? What I see here is pretty standard if you ask me... You can add as many particle effects and high res textures as u want in an in-engine cut-scene with no negative impact. But as soon as you convert this to real-time gameplay things like physics, A.I., textures, animations, particle effects, gameplay commands, lighting and other heavy stuff will keep battling each other for the CPU, GPU and Ram's resources.

NewMonday4771d ago

The "amazing" thing is that it’s a Japanese game engine, I mean no offence but they are way behind the west in programming, when they do something like this themselves its considered a breakthrough.

ChozenWoan4771d ago

Um, MGS4 looked better and that was released in 2008.

Better examples would be Mass Effect, Uncharted, or Gran Tourismo.

NewMonday4771d ago

I mean in general, graphically powerful Japanese games are a handful, but they are great in the art department.

"I mean no offence but they are way behind the west in programming"

That's a very POOR generalization. Japanese games tend to be more solid than most western games, considering they DO NOT have the budget of many high-profile western games like Killzone, Battlefield and Halo.

Take a look at Vanquish, that was made in LESS than a year and it looks better than many games plus the engine holds up with hardly noticable bugs and glitches. How many devs can brag about this? Even the atrocious RE5 gets an award for their MT Framework engine.

Japanese devs do not have the mentality of Western devs, they do not jizz their pants trying to compete with graphical powerhouses like Uncharted, Crysis, RAGE, etc. Their gameplay does the talking and most of the time, their graphics can back them up. Heck even EG was suprised that SoTC a PS2 GAME was MIMICKING ELEMENTS THAT DOESN'T EXIST IN THE PS2 HARDWARE.

I dont know what you guys were watching but I thought that video was pretty outstanding. The lighting and general attention to detail looked bloody incredible.

Im not a big fan of JRPG's but something like this could certainly change that.

Colour me impressed!

theonlylolking4771d ago

It has very good shaders like gears 3 but the texture detail is not good. It also needs AA but it still looks better than about every console game ever.

hakis864771d ago

I agree - now they need to make that game!!

cannon88004771d ago

You people that are bashing this should learn some respect. They try to show the graphical power of both consoles and you guys start complaining about everything! If you guys are going to complain and write rude things about something then get out.

ClydeRadcliffe4771d ago

Agreed with the above, I'm not really seeing anything that makes it stand out

Istanbull4771d ago

I really like to see a sequel to a Sony rpg like Legend of the Dragoon with the Killzone engine.

jc485734771d ago

kinda lame. make more games please.

VampiricDragon_4771d ago (Edited 4771d ago )

id rather someone do something good with artstyle and gameplay (which developers arent able to do which is why most say a gaming depression is here)

what some people call amazing. I call boringly generic.

extermin8or4771d ago

That looked generic firstly 2) I don't see anything overly impressive kinda reminded me of uncharted etc (visually) except it had better lighting going on but I'd hope so too considering its a cutscene in engine or not...

Tri-Ace still uses their old game engine from 2008

The gaming community lately makes jokes about companies making games that look like "PS3" or "PS2" games. While this is such a nasty dig, there may be some truth to this in the case of tri-Ace.

Sad really. I used to love these guys but man...they just aren't what they used to be.

phallusitator349d ago

According to the this they are exactly what they used to be…

Noskypeno349d ago

The Cod games have been using an engine built in the mid 90s. Nothing wrong with using an old engine if they update it. Bioshock used UE2 and looked better than most UE3 games. Arkham knight used UE3 and looked better than most UE4 games.

Chriswynnetbh349d ago

I would give my left nut for an infinite undiscovery pc port

shinoff2183349d ago

Sh it does suck but I enjoyed star ocean 6 the most out of any game last year. I thought it was solid af start to finish. My favorite game that year.

I'd love for Sony to get ahold of them.

shinoff2183349d ago

To late to edit but I just wanted to add not every game that comes out needs to push a consoles boundaries. Star ocean 6 looked fairly good to me.

shammgod349d ago

Yeah. They definitely squeezed every drop out of that engine for SO6. It was a fun game

nitus10348d ago (Edited 348d ago )

I assume you are talking about "Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness" which I do have and am still playing. IMHO it is a good game but for some reason I still prefer "Star Ocean: The Last Hope" that I played on my PS3.

As a side note I have "Star Ocean: Till the End of Time" (PS2 version) which I played on my first gen PS3 but unfortunatly the Australian version of the PS3 did not have full backwards capability like the US version did. I got so far in the game and hit a bug (advancement to a new area between two mountains) that prevented further play.

kmeck5182766d ago (Edited 2765d ago )

til the end of time is my favorite out of the ones I've played. Never played 1 or 2. And i just couldn't get into 4

Rangerman12082766d ago

Damn, I was expecting more news related to Star Ocean 5. Maybe a dlc or a patch.

Instead is just Square Enix's mobile fetish again.
