Bethesda: Skyrim Will Have Mammoths; Will Show at E3

X360A writes:

"Creating a living and breathing world is something that’s become a possibility in this day and age of games and as gamers, we expect things like an ecology now – or even the illusion of one – especially after Rockstar did such a fantastic job with Red Dead Redemption. Naturally, the topic of Skyrim’s ecology was brought up last week at Bethesda’s BFG Showcase and Todd Howard, Bethesda Game Studios’ Game Director, said that there will be one and that they have a surprise to show at E3."

God damn. This game is going to be so ridiculously good. GOTY contender easily.

TheLastGuardian20104773d ago

The only reason it might win GOTY is because it'll be one of the last, best games to be released this year. So it'll still be the FRESHEST in everyone's mind.

Otherwise. Portal 2 would win it hands down. Right now with a 95 on metacritic is easily in the top 5 highest scored games on metacritic. Secondly, it's just that. The game is GOOOD. Extremely good. As perfect, as perfect can get it.

Yet, there's still some huge GOTY contenders to be seen.

L.A Noire, Arkham City, RAGE, Dark Souls, Battlefield 3, Uncharted 3, Mass Effect 3, and let's not forget Modern Warfare 3, and possibly another rumored entry in the Assassins Creed series. Those are 9 possible games that could easily snag GOTY. Add that with Portal 2, and Skyrim then you have a mammoth list.

Not saying Skyrim won't win. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the competition for GOTY will be one like none other. To win goty RIGHT now, you have to produce a better experience than Portal 2 did. Which is a mighty hard task considering it's considered by gamers, and the media as one of the best games of not just this gen, but in gaming history, period. Mighty hard to get better than that.

VampiricDragon_4773d ago (Edited 4773d ago )

hardly............

you list maybe the media's goty. But that doesnt make it everyones, just the main stream media.

disgaea 4 is my game of the year. Maybe last story or ff type zero (when it comes out)

TheLastGuardian20104773d ago

Hardly?

Portal 2 mixed a good narrative, with witty, and humerous dialogue, mixed in with engaging characters, and excellent level design and you say hardly?

When a game has a better script than most films that's sayin' somethin'.

I'm not trying to toot it's horn or anything but Portal 2 created a gaming experience that very seldom you get to experience.

Besides that, the only game where I can see someone saying yeah that's the media's pick, not the gamers is Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield 3, and maybe Rage. That's all.

The rest on the list are ace for any gamer.

lastdual4773d ago

I'm sure both Skyrim and Portal 2 (and Uncharted 3, and Battlefield 3...) will win GOTY from *somebody*. It's not like there's a single authority giving out such awards.

Jacks_Medulla4773d ago

While I agree that there are many games that Skyrim needs to compete with, Portal 2 is not "one of the greatest games ever made". I finished it today, and I do believe it is a strong contender for game of the year. However, it's main draw, portals, are not the mind bending revolution they were three years ago. From the information released by Bethesda, Skyrim is going to be a Mammoth(pun intended) game. The technology behind it alone already seems to put it above portal 2. Bear in mind, though, Skyrim is my most anticipated game of the year, so I'm a little biased. Either way, one thing is certain, there are a lot of amazing games being released this year.

TheLastGuardian20104773d ago

Sure. But there's SO much to Portal 2 that makes it standout. The dialogue for instance. It's SO sharply written, it puts so many games to shame. Even compared to most movies the dialogue stands out so much. Then there's the humor which manages never to be corny, and crude. That's a huge step up for video games.

Then there's the excellent lighting, the great narrative, the characters, the small details that no one would notice but still there for the heck of it, the music, the level design, the atmosphere, the EXCELLENT voice acting. Then there's co-op which is also really good as well.

It's rare to find games such as portal 2 that's why it's so good.

When this gen is over there'll be 3 games that'll remember (for ps2 gen it was Silent Hill 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, & FF X).

Red Dead Redemption, Bioshock, and now Portal 2.

Jacks_Medulla4773d ago

Well, this begs the question; what makes a game truly great? In the end, it is all subjective. Most of the aspects of Portal 2 you mention are definitely far and away better than anything else in the gaming industry, and I hope that the strong writing will lead to the eventual evolution of games.(L.A. Noire will hopefully be another step in the right direction)

However, the odds are, Skyrim will absolutely consume me. Based off of the little information already released, Skyrim will have more content and unique experiences packed into it than half of the games released this year. It will also, if it's predecessors are anything to go by, be a highly immersive game.

As I said earlier, it is all subjective; to each there own. For you, a Game of the Year is made of the strides it takes for the industry. For me, a Game of the Year is made up of how immersive and detailed it is. My favorite games(Red Dead Redemption, Bioshock, Majora's Mask, MGS 4) all have one thing in common. They all immerse me in their world; most of them(excluding Zelda) have above average scripts similar to Portal 2. However, they also succeed in pulling me into their world. When I play Red Dead, I can feel the heat and taste the dust. When I play MGS 4, I get the sensation of bullets whizzing by. When I play Bioshock, shivers run up my spine whenever I hear a Big Daddy's footsteps or a splicers demented call. Unfortunately, I can't say anything similar about Portal 2.

I really hope they don't promise more than they can deliver.

So far so good though with everything I've seen.

I'm Replaying Skyrim (again), and So Should You

Replaying Skyrim after 13 years is a reminder of the progress made in western RPGs over the last decade, but also what's been lost.

anast40d ago

I tried, but it's a poorly made game that insults its customers.

lucian22940d ago

nah, only mods make it decent, and even then it's bad, and this is after i modded for at least 3 years

Nittdarko40d ago

Funnily enough, I'm about to play it for the first time in VR with 1000 mods to make the game playable, as is the Bethesda way

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave40d ago (Edited 40d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.
