Microsoft And Sony Targeting 2014 For New Consoles, Leaving Nintendo In The Clear

The next Xbox and the next PlayStation won't be released until 2014, if Microsoft and Sony have their way, industry sources tell Kotaku.

slavish34783d ago (Edited 4783d ago )

that would sucks better be a huge tech jump

VampiricDragon_4783d ago (Edited 4783d ago )

and have development costs and lack of originality and risk be even more outragious? no thanks

malamdra4783d ago (Edited 4783d ago )

Microsoft should release a new console on holidays 2014

but not Sony, late 2015 is the earliest for a new playstation

ksense4783d ago

I would like to see new console reveals at e3 2012 with release dates in 2013. Microsoft will release early 2013 and then Sony follows in late 2013.

rockleex4783d ago

This means the Wii2 will be left in the dust again in terms of graphics.

ChozenWoan4783d ago

I'd prefer reveals 2014 and released 2015.

That would give the current gen time to get down to $150-$199 across the board.

Plus with MS having just launched the 360Slim as well as Kinect, I'm sure they would like widen their base before the next gen. No sense in spending so much time, money, and resources to promote Kinect just to move on before devs really have a chance to master it. If devs had to deal with learning a new Xbox console as well figuring out what all they can do with Kinect would be overwhelming and expensive.

Sony is pushing 1-2 to many consoles right now with the PS3, PSP, NGP, Xperia Play, and the legendary PS2; so I doubt they really want to add another iron to the fire at this time. Not to mention they are promoting the PSMove, Blu-Rays, and of coarse 3Dtvs. They have their hands full already. Yet, they also have Home and the PSN that they are constantly developing which means they really don't have the resources to dedicate to releasing a PS4 anytime soon.

Then there is the global economy to consider. Right now, consoles are still sitting at the starting price from the previous generations which means they have a lot of room for price improvements. Add to this that the ave games MSRP is $10-30 more than the last two gens and you can understand why many gamers are shopping the bargain bins.

There are just too many factors against having the next console gen begin anytime soon.

VampiricDragon_4783d ago

at this point graphics are pretty much at a standstill anyway

Deputydon4783d ago

I'm pretty sure Sony is going to attempt to release the same year as the new MS console. If they would have done so with the PS3, then it would be ahead in sales right now, even with that higher price point. But I suspect the PS4 won't launch at that high of a price again.

anonym4783d ago

I have to disagree about the lack of originality. Take a look at the line up of big games coming out this year. The VAST majority are just new numbered installments of franchises created in the first few years of the current generation, if not even earlier.

Pixel_Pusher4783d ago

whoring for hits? no thanks.

starchild4783d ago (Edited 4783d ago )

If this is true it's going to be funny to see the new Nintendo console demolish the 360 and PS3 in graphics for a couple years. Karma's a bitch, right?

gamingdroid4783d ago

The sooner Microsoft and Sony releases a new console the better in my book. I'm ready!

Bear_Grylls4783d ago

New xbox was needed 2 years ago and a new playstation will be needed by the end of next year.

Winter47th4783d ago (Edited 4783d ago )

Whoever releases his console the earliest will cluster**** the others, no history needs repeating here.

ChrisW4783d ago

Can't wait! This will help PC gaming development, too!

jeseth4783d ago

I like the 2015 date. 360 and PS3 are pumping out great games and this gen is at its peak.

The Wii needs a successor . . . it sucks.

I would love for both Sony and MS systems to drop at or near the same time, it would be a gaming madness craze and it would be awesome!

malamdra4783d ago (Edited 4783d ago )

I want a new gen but not now, there's nothign on PC that much better than then best on consoles

jony_dols4783d ago (Edited 4783d ago )

Considering I have owned a 360 since '07 & a PS3 since '08. This gen, will be well past its expiration date in 2014. Sony and Microsoft will have released all the current games in the pipeline, and it will finally be time to move on. I hope that we get a Summer/Holiday 2013 release of the first true next-gen consoles.

(Nintendo's supped up Xbox 360 doesn't count as next-gen, if you want a Wii 2 equivalent, with a better library of games and proper multimedia functions then just buy a PS3 and a Move controller)

Whenever they decide to release their machines, I will be among the early adopters, so it really does not make a difference to me WHEN it happens.

I just hope that Sony continues to push the limits of technology and MSFT continues their aggressive marketing tactics. The competition between these two companies has resulted in great games and features for console owners.

hakis864783d ago

Hmm. One the one hand this is stupid, they are just giving Nintendo a chance to eat some millions from the market.

On the other hand we get to see a even bigger tehnical leap.. The PS3 is 10x more powerful than the PS2, the PS2 10x more powerful than the PS1... So if PS4 comes out in 2014 it will of course destroy the WiiHD (WiiHD IMO is too little too late?).

I'm guessing Microsoft will launch before Sony again. They saw what a huge benefit that was for them last time, although the gap between 360 and PS3 is virtually gone now, they did have a lead for some years!

As long as the Wii HD is vastly strongly than the 360 and at least as strong as the PS3 I'll buy it.

Ths PS3 is more powerful than the X360, we know. But the dfference between the two isn't as huge as you make it sound.

ash_divine4783d ago

@AfterMoth

Why would you want a next-gen console that was only as powerful (or marginally more powerful) than the current gen ones? Isn't that sort of settling?

afterMoth4783d ago

Oh I would definitely want a much bigger jump, I'm just not counting on Nintendo to do a massive leap. Just saying I'd have to give in and buy it if it meant playing games like Zelda with Uncharted quality graphics or Ratchet and Clank quality.

Muerte24944783d ago

I seriously doubt that Nintendo is launching a Wii 2. The Wii is just a little over four. I think people are jumping to conclusion, and are naive to think Nintendo is going to launch another console. They just launched the 3DS, so I doubt they're going to throw another system at consumer right after the release of the 3DS.

Fallouts4783d ago (Edited 4783d ago )

@aftermoth
dude... you act as if the ps3 is above and beyond 360 graphics.

if its going to be "vastly" stronger than the 360 then no doubt it will be stronger than the ps3. i seriously wonder wtf you ppl actually see when you play games.. let me know where you get you magic dragon from, please!

"i seriously wonder wtf you ppl actually see when you play games."

Uncharted :D God of War III :D Killzone 2 :D Gran Turismo 5 :D . What I don't see now are games on the 360 or Wii that compare. I do own a 360 and it has some fun games, but on a technical level it is easy to see which system has the best games.

dragunrising4783d ago

You list a few games which have their equals on multiplatform. Crysis 2 compares favorably to Killzone 2/3. Need for Speed Shift to GT5. Castlevania to GOW3. Uncharted 2 is the only game you listed without equal. GT5 can look excellent at times and ugly in others (backgrounds, aliasing, in car detail in many cars). Also, the load time between races and online especially is excruciatingly long. When you have great looking multiplatform games that compare favorably on the 360 its hard to say that the PS3 is vastly stronger. Personally, it matters little which console is stronger as I have both. If the 360 had SD resolution graphics like the Wii we could use terms like "vastly superior."

Don't make your opinion sound like your stating fact.

Why would that suck? 2014 sounds perfect to me. Lots of good games still coming out for the PS3; I'm in no hurry to move on to the next generation.

Soplox4783d ago

of course and SONY and M$ wont release a rushed Console to the market just cuz Nintendo has released a HD console. They can compete Nintendo's with the PS3 and 360

ct034783d ago

Of course it'll be a huge tech jump. Moore's Law says that if new consoles come as late as 2014, they should be about 16 times as powerful as the current ones.

GrandMaxPain4783d ago

16 times faster wont be enough. I want CG graphix.

Shadow04783d ago

I'm not even sure what I would really want them to upgrade. I'd like some more ram and such so I can play bigger games and maybe some mmo's now and then. But other than that the console can only get so good in terms of graphics and their are some REALLY good graphics out there that this gen can run just fine.

dreamtheater874783d ago

"I'm not even sure what I would really want them to upgrade"

That my friend, is why you are not a games designer :P

Just because you cannot imagine what technological leaps can be made does not mean that there are none. There is so much potential for gaming in the future, personally I wish this current generation would end already but I can understand why some would not (financial/economic reasons).

Only a handful of developers are giving glimpses into the future of gaming, DICE being a prime example. Or the new facial mapping tech of LA Noire. Gaming is still in it's infancy, lets not slow it down by not demanding progress people!

Genki4783d ago

Sony and Microsoft essentially refreshed their console lines in the last 18 months or so, with both motion control systems, XBox's new form factor/SKU's, and PS3 with 3D.

All of these things cost money, and the next three years will be the time they spend trying to recoup that money. Nevermind all of the games currently under development.

This was a very pivotal generation for video games, the first big jump to HD, motion controls, social networking, DLC, 3D, and a whole host of other factors have made things a lot more complicated for the industry. Not only will all of the aforementioned features most likely need to come standard next gen, but gfx and performance will need to be 1080p, 60FPS and 3D at a MINIMUM. Either of the companies could release a system even tomorrow that could fulfill all of those needs, but resolution, 3D, and fps all come at a pretty steep price, and I doubt that any offering from either company would have the performance to unquestionably outperform todays systems AND be competitively priced.

3 more years is plenty of time for the tech to develop, and for emerging technologies like USB 3.0 and SSD to come down to an attainable price point. I say let us wait. The current gen was a muddy and ugly start for both Sony and Microsoft, with their performance, game library, feature and reliability issues. They both need to do us all and them a favor and simply take their time.

E3 2011/2012. Nintendo is gonna deliver a big bang and Microsoft and Sony are going to be forced to react to it. I say PS3 E3 2012 Launch Fall 2013. XB3 E3 2012/2013 Launch Fall 2013/2014

If they honestly wait until 2014. They are suckers. Wii 2 will dominate the landscape. Even with slightly less power than those two consoles when they launch. Wii 2 will already have the market on its side. Like the PS2, and X360 After that. Although Wii still sold the best due to simply costing less. Microsoft and Sony both think its due to its motion ability. Won't happen for PS4 and Xbox 3. They won't be that cheap. Wii 2 will be cheaper by then though compared to those platforms. So Nintendo is doing the smart thing with the Wii 2/NES 6.

Sony can't be last to the race this time around and can't make the console too over the top price wise if they want to gain more of the market then last time faster.

fallingdove4783d ago (Edited 4783d ago )

"If they honestly wait until 2014. They are suckers. Wii 2 will dominate the landscape. Even with slightly less power than those two consoles when they launch. Wii 2 will already have the market on its side"

Not necessarily, a two year head start is extremely dangerous in the tech world. If the console is only marginally better than the 360 and PS3, it will be blown out of the water when Microsoft and Sony bring their next consoles to market. Msoft and Sony will have vastly superior technology and will have had 2 years to develop counter strategies to anything Nintendo has brought to the table. Nintendo would be surpassed relatively quickly with that scenario.

DeadlyFire4783d ago (Edited 4783d ago )

At most I expect a 12 threaded CPU from Nintendo. That is only twice as powerful as Xbox 360 and PS3. Well the rumors mark a triple core PowerPC based CPU. Likely dual threaded or quad threaded. As newer PowerPC tech enables up to 4 SMT threads per core. It would be stupid to only match up to X360 and PS3 with only 6 threaded CPU I believe.

Typically generation to generation power goes from 4-5 times or higher when a generation goes up. By 2011/2012 its more than possible for 32-64 threaded CPUs to exist. PS3 and X360 both have 6 threads used in their SDK for game development.

Still though with a High end graphics card NES 6 stands a good chance of being a weaker console with actual third party support. Even if a generation behind you could get titles that surpass PS3 and X360 quality. There is nothing at all wrong with PS3 and X360 quality for games. They are great platforms and Wii 2 even with same tech could last 10 years on its own with this quality. That is the main thing that will keep Wii 2 going. Games will be good enough is what I am saying.

I am telling you this isn't a 2 year head start. Sony will launch the year right after. I have very little doubt about it.

I just wonder where Sony and Microsoft will aim with their respective CPUs. I believe around 24 threads is most likely. Even in case of hybrid CPU/GPU sharing threads evenly. Something IBM/Sony/Intel/AMD/NVIDIA have all been toying with in recent years.

caperjim4783d ago

I agree. Theres no way they will wait till 2014 to launch and if they do the system better be able to cook for me.

If the market were to get flooded with consoles now, we might very well face the same fate as the gaming industry did in the 1980's.

The economy is not strong enough, especially in the United States to risk launching a new console, especially if you cant do it for under $600, which is what Microsoft or Sony would have to sell new tech for.

Nintendo is in my opinion anyway just releasing some sort of stopgap that probably should have been released last year.

It will let them continue with motion controls but also bring back the core crowd, imagine people playing a version of COD on the Nintendo with solid online and graphics on par with the 360 / PS3? They would be contenders.

QuodEratDemonstrandm4783d ago

You don't think the economy will improve in the next three years? It's improved a bit already in the past three years.

Any improvement these new consoles could make would be almost entirely in graphics. The PS3 has 12 buttons and two sticks, the 360 controller is about the same. From an ergonomic perspective, this is the best anyone can do. So I doubt the next generation of controllers will change very much. MS and Sony will have to squeeze more options into the same controllers we're all using now, which might actually happen, but won't be much. Just a few examples: what was added control-wise when MGS and GTA went from the PS2 to the PS3? I'm NOT referring to the obvious improvement in graphics... that's a "DUH!.... what could the controller do in GTA4 that it couldn't do in GTS: San Andreas? And what could the controller do in MGS4 that it couldn't do in MGS3?

I can see some upgrades in gameplay, but it will mostly be graphics: resolution, framerate, etc.... hopefully, as long as MS and Sony are taking, the jump will be big enough to make FFXIII look like FFVII, or GTA4 look like GTA2.

And if we're REALLY lucky.... the dominant genre will be Sandbox.... instead of FPS. Imagine getting, instead of a half scale Manhattan Island, the ENTIRE STATE OF CALIFORNIA, 163,696 square miles, with graphics that would make Crysis look bad.

fallingdove4783d ago

"And if we're REALLY lucky.... the dominant genre will be Sandbox.... instead of FPS."

I respect your tastes but a Sandbox dominant generation would be equal to or worse than the FPS dominant generation.

With the exception of GTAIV and Red Dead and maybe Infamous, Sandbox games this generation have really lacked narrative. I don't want every game next generation to lack story and require me to spend 30 minutes driving to my next worthless task.

ASSASSYN 36o4783d ago

Love how console devs play the cat and mouse game. Oh we aren't doing anything towards a new console. Then suddenly a new console is announced. In other words keep buying our current gen while we pop a next gen console in your lap when we hope you least expect it and will be surprised. All done with low supplies in stores of course.

They used to be 😞 sure it was always a business, and money's always the priority, but they used to have a very strong stance on supporting artists and creativity. "Dont f#@k with the artist" was a phrase they touted a few times back in the ps1-ps3 era, a philosophy carried over from their music branch PlayStation was created from. It's not COMPLETELY gone, but it's barely there compared to what it was back then, i just want them to return to that.

Eonjay21h ago(Edited 21h ago)

I am highly encouraged by their statement about human creativity. "Dont f#@k with the artist" is exactly what they are saying. But at the same time, I don't think people understand that Sony is a corporation. If they don't realize growth, they don't get to exist. When you say 'Sony', you are talking about a bunch of investors. To speak about them any other way is a illogical and incorrect. They haven't changed. They have been a group of investors since they became a public business.

Why defend him at this point?

It’s not taking things out of context, he said what he said.

Old ND would never talk about soulless AI taking over so many creative things they are well known for. The whole “ethical issues” is just a good PR spin people who push this crap fall back on to make their statements not seem as bad. So many AI lovers do this.

AI has no place is so many creative based things.

Einhander19721d ago

Well yeah, because everyone else is using it so they need to stay competitive. It's the same as paid online, they didn't want to go that route but their competition was making so much money they needed to add paid online just to keep up.

RaiderNation21h ago(Edited 21h ago)

AI will never replace humans in game development in terms of conceptualizing new games. Humans still need to come up with the ideas and what they want to implement. However much of the day to day menial coding could be AI driven to reduce production time and team size. I could also see AI being used for bug testing/optimization that could lead to better quality games at launch. I'm actually very optimistic about how AI can positively impact game development.

Eonjay22h ago

AI in and of itself is not a 'bad'. Money is bad. Money is evil, and corporations will do whatever they can to get more of it. They will find ways to implement AI to replace as may jobs as possible. This isn't even up for debate. It is the charge of the corporation to maximize returns for the investors. They have no choice. I'm a developer and I know that my job will absolutely be replaced. Therefore, I have decided to become an AI dev. AI has a lot of potential to help us solve problem on a scale most can't even imagine. The issue, as ever is that our monetary system only ever allows us to focus on greed and fiscal growth.

But I am a pragmatist. Perhaps an AI model can be built to help protect us from our most dangerous instincts and habits. And perhaps Congress can pass laws to protect us from people who would use AI to manipulate and control us (spoiler: they wont).
