PS3 Version of Portal 2 Becomes One of The Highest Rated Games Ever

Portal 2′s review embargo lifted today and, as expected, gamers were drowned with countless extremely positive Portal 2 reviews. The PlayStation 3 version of Valve’s masterpiece has now become one of the highest rated games of all time on Metacritic.

Chuk54763d ago

It's only at 12 reviews, wait awhile because that most likely will go down.

Trizard4763d ago

And the average user score is a 5.4 which is a little more telling.

tmoss7264763d ago

People don't really post anything useful. It's all 10s or 0s. So I wouldn't count the user score.

macky3014763d ago (Edited 4763d ago )

Yes it is telling some one is butthurt,..

And I am really not that excited for Portal 2 to be honest,.. I am still getting it tomorrow though,.. I really want them to surprise me,..

iamgoatman4763d ago

Not really, user reviews on meta are a load of horse sh*t.

Trizard4763d ago

I'm just saying it takes all the money and bribery that goes on out of the equation.

Orange4763d ago

"I'm just saying it takes all the money and bribery that goes on out of the equation."

Yeah, and replaces it with petty fanboyism and inanity.

SuperLupe4763d ago

I guess multiplats are cool after all.

Silly gameAr4763d ago

@SuperLupe

You needed other people's opinions to come to that conclusion for yourself?

SuperLupe4763d ago

@sillygamer.

I waas pointing out how stupid it is to act like exclusives are the end of the world.

Nitrowolf24763d ago

@Trizard

don't use user score from Meta, would rather use gamefaqs though they only have 5 user reviews. Meta for user reviews should be trusted at all since after all Fanboys attack games score like crazy now, like Halo user review was low after uncharted 2 user reviews were attacked and such.

User reviews on Meta are pointless

DMason4763d ago

Portal 2 is rated on 95 on all platforms. This article fails hard.

Haseo1064763d ago

it's 5.4 because of Xbox360 fanboys!

nskrishna24763d ago

LOL!
@Trizard

user reviews on Meta critic are people who believe that review scores matter a lot because fans of another console will use it to brag..which they don't want cuz they're butthurt

Wenis4763d ago

This article jumped the gun. Because right now Portal 2 for PC is a 95, with the 360 and ps3 versions both at 94.

Trizard4763d ago

LOL
@Nskrishna

Becasue the user review score is abotu the same on the xbox side too. I personally think this game is not worth $60 on any console or pc after beating the campaign day 1 in 5.5 hrs. Yes, co-op may add some extra replay ability but come on, this is not a whole quality game. I remember when I payed $30 for The Orange Box, now thats a nicely priced game.

BubbleSniper4763d ago

yeh it tell me how much general population of "gamer" can be complete and utter nincompoops!

50Terabytespersec4763d ago

I smell massive marketing dollars behind all this , Gabe Newell is a very wealthy guy he has M$ dollars and owns Steam Id say IGN is not reputable at all for solid reviews..
Just from my experience playing games i paid for and worked for and play on a 42" Bravia in a gaming living room (not a Cubicle with free game pass and marketing payolla dollars in my pocket on a diabetic binge I.E most of the IGN reviewers)
stay away from IGN for solid reviews. i usually go to about 4 independent sources.

paintsville4763d ago

Just goes to show that a game doesn't have to be exclusive to be great. In fact this just further supports the idea that 99% of great games are Multi-Console. Good job Valve.

metsgaming4763d ago

remember how gta4 was the highest rated game, what a joke that was. Never go by metacritic go by what you see and what people say about it. But only the people who have actually played it not those users who mark games a low score and give no reason.

Kleptic4763d ago

I think the best thing to do is go by both...that is if you don't have any realistic means of trying before you buy...

GTAIV is a tough example because it definitely fell into a its 'cool and edgy' to hate...similar to Halo...but reviewers pretty much wet their pants with it...so you have forum communities saying 'it sux'...and reviewers saying its the best game ever created...literally...and its hard to know where to go...

I bought GTAIV without reading anything from the media, or whatever people were saying...and found it to be great, but not something that absolutely blew me away...I wasn't the best GTA game I ever played, and changed so much i found very little replay value in it...then saw review scores and simply couldn't believe it...

Now this Portal 2 stuff is similar situation overall...I simply have a hard time paying $60 where the reviewer clearly says you'll only get about 12 hours out of it...it is DEFINITELY something I will play one way or another...but that could mean either waiting until its really cheap in a year or two, or simply renting it for a weekend (which seems like more than enough time to experience the whole thing)...

itsmyyard4763d ago

With so many perfect reviews from the big sites, do u think we'll see a bunch of low-scored reviews now?

starchild4763d ago

This article is so stupid. The PC and 360 versions are only 1 point lower and have more individual scores contributing to the metascore.

Not to mention that these statistical anomalies are meaningless. Does anybody honestly think that if the PS3 version ends up with a higher metascore than the PC version that it means the PS3 version is better?

The same reviewers do not review each version and the same review sites are not even used consistently across platforms on Metacritic.

Orange4763d ago

I agree, there's no reason for the provocative "PS3" slant. That said, thank god the game is amazing on PS3 and we won't have to deal with any Lens of Truth cat fights over which console version is better.

NBT914763d ago

"Does anybody honestly think that if the PS3 version ends up with a higher metascore than the PC version that it means the PS3 version is better?"

Well... Yeah, I do think that... I mean is that not how review scores work?
Plus you get Steam (and therefore PC) version free with the PS3 version, so if nothing else is different then I would still get the PS3 version over any other...

Darkfocus4763d ago

that's not how review scores work at all. reviews are for the most part platform specific otherwise every wii game would get a 1 in graphics. It's also why ps3 games graphics are judged on a higher standard than 360 games, becuase the best looking ps3 games look better than the best looking 360 games...

BubbleSniper4763d ago

dont cry failchild dont cry

not like you have to point out PC best version by miles

zzz..

humbleopinion4763d ago

There's no difference between the PC/360/PS3 reviews from sites that review both versions. Only difference is made because some sites review just one of the versions so small variance is possible.

Also, There are quite a few reviews right now for all versions. The game shows a great 96/95 average, but Uncharted 2 had like a 98 average with the first 20 reviews so that article is misleading (and SMG and GTA IV stacked even higher at that point - at an almost perfect 99).

JsonHenry4763d ago (Edited 4763d ago )

Anyone that trusts user review scores on metacritic is an idiot. Especially since the game has not even been released for 12 hours. What kind of review could they possibly be giving the game based on? An hour tops of gameplay?

ME19894763d ago

Only takes around 6-7 hours to beat it really.

solar4763d ago

Valve is too lazy ofa dev to make that level quality of a game for the ps3. remember?

:P

ksoto4763d ago

Yeah they were it took them how many years to do so? I will never support valve since initially they were being lil fags and not supporting th3 ps3. Not to mention the fact that this game doesnt seem to have any type of replay value whatsoever, yet reviewers don't take points off for that but they would if it was another game (smh)

solar4763d ago

so you are calling a company "lil fags"? nothing you say holds any weight with "lil boy" comments like that.

HolyOrangeCows4763d ago

....until Metacritic posts more reviews.

FACTUAL evidence4763d ago

Well UC2 has a meta of 96 soo....

Game is obviously good but Metacritic and reviews in general are pointless, subjective, and a complete waste of my time.

fluffydelusions4763d ago (Edited 4763d ago )

The game is amazing. WTG Valve. This is easily my favorite game since Heavy Rain.

Prcko4763d ago

meh,not interested,gonna w8 for big price drop!

jahcure4763d ago

it's already basically $25 bucks at best buy

Cost $45 outright (less the 10% coupon floating around)
10$ gift card for buying it this week
500 reward zone points equivalent to $10 for buying it this week

Can't get much better than this...and if it's as short as people say you can turn around and trade it in at the same best buy for AT LEAST 35$ up to 2 months from now....

FAGOL4763d ago

Pretty good deals here in the UK. Plus you get the PC version for free if you get the PS3 1.

GodofSackboy4763d ago

I usually buy mainly exclusives as well Prcko, but im not missing this one! And im selling my friend the PC code

omi25p4763d ago

You only buy exclusives? WTF why??

Steam's highest-rated game is now less than a dollar in the Spring Sale

Jack writes: "Yet again browsing the latest offers in the Steam Spring Sale has led us to track down the very best. In terms of price to quality, we don’t think that it gets much better than this. Portal 2 is now less than a dollar, and if you haven’t got it already, now is the time to pick it up."

TheEroica45d ago

Portal deserves to be one of steams highest rated games... It's almost tetris levels of perfect game design.

TheEnigma31345d ago

It's a great game, but highly overrated. But for $1, it's an amazon deal.

Friendlygamer45d ago

Valve should bring their games to ps5

Kados44d ago (Edited 44d ago )

Gotta love Steam. Just got Portal 2 for .97 cents CAD. Should have been $1.29, selected the bundle with Portal 1 and 2, which gets a 25% discount, already have Portal 1, so it removes the cost of that, and still applies the full 25% bundle discount to Portal 2. 90% + 25% discount.

Friendlygamer44d ago

That's sweet, I've been thinking about building a modest pc to play some oldies

Infinite but not the first two games? Witcher 3 but not the first two games?? GTA V but not literally any of the games before it??? Portal 2 but not the first? Also if you're going to play Shadow of The Colossus play the remaster and not the remake. Can't say I disagree with the list but my man it's all over the place.

Name Last Name52d ago

I mean some sequels are objectively better and you don’t need to play the whole series.

Inverno52d ago

But most of these games have a story to follow, sure you can catch up with a YouTube vid but where's the fun in that?

LucasRuinedChildhood52d ago (Edited 52d ago )

A list like this isn't telling you not to play the previous games if you want to. It's just giving you legendary games to play.

But tbh, you don't always have to force yourself to play every entry in a franchise to get to the better ones.

- The vast majority of Witcher 3 players never played the first 2 and had a great time. The first 2 games aren't in the same league.
- The GTA games are self-contained with the odd fun reference. You can easily jump into any of them.
- The Shadow Of The Colossus remake looks and controls better than the original (plus it has a 60fps option while the remaster is just 30fps). New players will enjoy it more.
- Portal 2 is a lot better than Portal 1 and takes the concept much further gameplay-wise. Storywise, Portal 1 is fairly light too. Not that you shouldn't play it but realistically ... you'd love Portal 2 whether you play it or not (at lot of Portal 2 players have never played 1).

Bioshock 1 is the only one I agree with you on simply because it's one the best games of all time and arguably better than Infinite. No other setting like Rapture.

Looking at the list, I'd recommend playing Uncharted 1 before 2 but no doubt, 2 is the legendary one you have to play.

Inverno52d ago

I get it, but that's just my opinion on his opinion. I just think that before you play a sequel you should still play what came before it. Maybe it's just me but i find it fascinating playing through the first game in a series and seeing how it has evolved through its sequels. Like I said I don't disagree with the list, other than SoTC which I strongly believe the remaster of the original should be played above the remake.

AuraAbjure52d ago

Awesome list! Hot take on Fear (and it's hard af expansion Persaus Mandate!) Bioshock Infinite is stellar, so is the Witcher 3 and you nailed it by having Ocarina of Time. So many fantastic games! Gotta play 'em all! Next one on my list is Prey after I beat Dead Space 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction.

valve suck so much at making games now, opting just to smaug on top of an enormous pile of money,
that fans got so desperate that they have to make their own games.
this industry is fucking over.
