there is no contest here. but i have to say...the 360 version looks like it was almost intentionally made to look worse..like it's not being displayed in the proper resolution or something. it looks worse than the first portal on 360. something doesn't seem quite right here.

either way, ps3 is far and away the clear winner here. i opted for the ps3 version solely for the PC key, but i guess it worked out anyway.

Cool, I'm getting the PS3 version. I mean, it was a no-brainer for me since the PC version is the main version I care about and I get the PC version free with the PS3 version. The PS3 version is just a nice bonus that I can play to get the trophies and maybe play some co-op with console-only friends.

In any case I don't see much difference here. Both versions look extremely similar, with the PS3 having maybe a bit sharper image quality and perhaps better anti-aliasing. (I can't see all the screenshots because that site isn't loading correctly for me). The PC version will have the more noticeable advantages.

you dont know who to trust anymore with these comparison sites. To think one site could favor one platform over another, wouldnt go to the length of tweaking with the output to change the results. That is very possible.

The end result is to judge for yourself. Be it on graphics, controls or friends to play with/against. This game looks to cover all the bases no matter what you choose.

Look at the image of the room. You'll notice that the 360 is both bright and overly dark.
Look under the table and chair. Completely black. Shadows are crushed. Losing detail.
While the PS3 version holds a more balanced picture (more cinematic-ish) and maintains visible detail in dark areas.

It looks like the PS3 version is using that famed Cell-based MLAA technique that so many EA-published games seem to use. But still, did Valve deliberately try to make the 360 version look inferior or something? Because that looks like it's the case here.

Why am I getting phantom disagrees? This is the 4th or 5th release by Valve on 360, whereas they have absolutely ZERO experience developing on the PS3. Therefore, it should come as a bit of a shock, to say the least, to most people that there's such a disparity between the two versions visually... in FAVOR of the PS3 version.

Perhaps the reason for the PS3 version being superior simply comes down to the fact that Valve prioritized the PS3 version as the lead platform, and really focused on polishing up that particular version. They really do seem to be pushing PS3 version quite hard and hoping that most people get that version over the others... based on the fact that the PS3 version has a boatload of extras (i.e., Steamworks, PC-to-console cross-platform compatibility, a free copy of the PC version). Even though I have no love for the 360 I have to agree, remember when Valve made a deal with ATI back when they released Half-Life 2, before that Nvidia chipsets where the ones to use with valve games, after the deal Gabe Newell called playing HL2 with a ATI card would give the best experience and be the definitive chipset to get the best from HL2. That was back when ATI was riddled with bad drivers (pre-catalyst) and under performing GPU's.

Remember, Gabe Newell is all business, this was a business decision, not a technical one.

They have used full anti-aliasing on the 360 and not on the PS3. The PS3 hence has a sharper look in still shots but they probably look about the same providing there is no framerate drops I would say it worked out well. As much as I love my 360 I actually prefer to play with Anti-Aliasing off on PC games and would like this option on PS3 and XBox 360. I don't think Valve done too bad a job on either version, they both look great and remember this is the Half Life 2 engine with slight upgrades. Also started to lose faith in Lens of Crap! Their screenshots and inconsistent arguments over which is better never seems to add up. I buy all multi-plats for Xbox purely because my friends all have one but the PS3 is starting to get the love it deserves from developers... too bad its a little late in the game with Wii2 and the next gen just around the corner. Sony ARE concentrating on exclusives, this gen is over soon and the multiplats are going to be very similar, just like Xbox and PS2 there is little difference. Valve made it, what I was saying, if you can read, is Sony shouldn't spend any more revenue on multiplat games and concentrate on their own exclusives this gen and the next... just like MS is doing! They are established machines now and it makes sense not to waste investment revenue. What you quoted me saying makes PERFECT sense. So hopefully this helped you understand my opinion.

Sony MUST have paid NetherRealm and Valve because neither of those situations would benefit anyone but Sony. More copies of MK sold due to Kratos, by people otherwise on the fence, and console only owners being exposed to Steam and maybe wanting to check it out further on PC wouldn't be beneficial to their respective parties? Maybe even enough for them to pay Sony?

Let's assume Sony did pay. How much? Did it shift enough units to give them a positive return on their investment? Why would you assume Sony would take a loss on these these transactions? Couldn't it be possible Sony is profiting on 3rd party deals? Perhaps you have evidence that Sony is loosing money on 3rd party deals?

Profit is profit, right. As long as the investment capital isn't being drawn from funds normally used for first party games, (and I think this year's release schedule alone puts that notion to rest), and Sony isn't taking a loss on the investment (and you have yet to provide any proof that they are), how do you draw the conclusion this will have a negative impact on revenue build up?

In terms of shadows lighting and AA yes; but I believe it came at a cost to resolution making everything look a little muddy.

Ive F#(%*d around with settings a lot in my life and I know what different settings look like especially out of the source engine, I own every game valve has made in the past 13 years.

the 360 appears to have AA and slightly more intricate lighting and shadows but the resolution is seemingly lower or the AA has blurred the edges of occluding geometry and made the textures themselves look blurry, as opposed to the sharper look of the PS3.

IMO AA has mixed results, some would argue that AA isnt even needed until you reach very high resolutions, and others would argue the opposite, all a part of personal preference i guess.

For f**k sake. Both version are jaggy central and there is no way the 360 version will look that soft when you actually play it. Both versions look as sterile as hell and too pre-rendered. Nothing about the environments seems natural or organic even though there is organic life. As for the gameplay I just dont get it. So valve has created an FPS puzzle - but the lack of AI opposition means this will have stuff all replay value. I wonder, will you have to buy a code to play it if you buy it second hand as I'm sure the auction sites will be full of copies days after its released.

Honestly, I can't believe how many PS3 owners are now prepared to feel Gabe's buttocks against their face just because he releases a puzzle game on the PS3. It doesn't even support Move FFS - which it should!

They even tried to make Steam on the PS3 sound bad. They also failed to mention that you get a copy of the PC version when you purchase the PS3 version. SMH Bias is bias, copy and paste strikes again.

Those graphical differences are in reality so tiny that it would 0 effect on score, even graphics score. People never stare at still shots while playing and while playing nobody notices difference between 360 and PS3. They are pretty much identical. At least if frame rate and screen tearing, which are a lot more important issues that those tiny differences in stills, are same. The only bigger difference between versions is Steam and that PC version. That might make 0.1 more to PS3 score.

That'd be fine if IGN hadn't given Crysis 2 different visual scores, annointing it god status on the 360 despite a country mile of visual bugs and exclusive tearing and grain glitches. I guess inconsistency is a risk you run though when you employ a revolving door of reviewers.

That does seem like a bit of a brush-off. When they do mention Steam it's a "trimmed down variation" lol instead of listing all its benefits like cross-platform chat/friends/gameplay/cloud saves and a free PC copy to get the ball rolling.

I meant that the dev. of Crysis 2 said that the PS3 ver. would be the better one and that turned out to be not entirely accurate.

So my point was that the reason ppl are surprised about Portal 2 (ps3 ver) being better than the 360 one is because usually devs. tend to fall short of the mark.

I find it strange that the issues that has been on almost every multiplattform games is reversed on Portal 2.

Is this something the game developers do with purpose in many other games one may start thinking about.

Hahaaa, Valve proves that it's not really about graphics, but color, they made 360 brighter and it looks like shiiit compared to darker (which in this care is PS3)
Okay, they made PS3 look more sharper and not only darker. Xbox has blur effects, no no, not that it's just all blur, but look at these pictures, you see further items are blurry, while PS3 seems to have none of these blur effects. Actually it's not consoles fault, PS3 may have some problems with frame-rates, that i agree, but it's all about how much work developers put into making it look better, you can't deny that most games are ported to PS3 and many of them very poorly, times change, Playstation is back in business!

It seems that the 360 version uses blur to hide the jaggies it has compared to the PS3 version. Look at the lamp and TV in the first image on the PS3 comparedd to the 360. PS3 wins but hey, I just wanna play the game and get my free copy of Portal 2 for the PC with cross platform chat and co-op. If you have a PS3 and 360 and you buy the 360 version, your mad.
