Portal PS3 And Steam Code Can Be Used Separately

With Portal 2 releasing in just several days on the PS3, a lot of gamers are wondering the limitations they have on the FREE Steam copy packed in the game.

Probably will be able to get them on eBay too.

PainisCupcake4758d ago

I'm sure Valve would clamp down on Portal 2 codes on eBay.

mandf4758d ago (Edited 4758d ago )

I'm not selling my steam code for Portal 2, but I'm willing give it away on a condition. Who ever wants it must have a headset and beat all the coop trophies with me, and must be a n4g member. If you want it for free pm me or if you have a PS3 send a friends request. I'm picking up my copy tuesday. It's a good deal for a free copy of Portal2 for helping with trophies. I'm not a trophy whore but I want the platinum in this game that focuses more on teamwork than a solo soldier. Looking forward to playing with a serious gamer.

Leave the fanboyism on n4g.

You guys read this little line here, huh:

"NOTE: If you link your Steam account on your PlayStation Network, you WILL not be able to play the game at the same time."

Which means it makes the PS3 version pretty much useless - unless you'll never go online on the PS3 with the game.

dragon824758d ago

It just means that if you link your Steam account to your PSN account, you wont be able to play both of them online at the same time. You can still play both online at any given time, just not together.

mandf4758d ago

I have already promised the code for someone. Just giving a heads up. Enjoy the game everyone.

DigitalAnalog4758d ago (Edited 4758d ago )

Read it again:

"If you link "YOUR" Steam account on your PlayStation Network, you WILL not be able to play the game at the same time."

Therefore if you have a family member who has THEIR OWN steam account and is link to YOUR PS3 network. They can play at the same time. This is like saying you CAN'T have 2 computers running the same STEAM account at the same time.

-End statement

Soldierone4758d ago

Crap....better unlink my accounts then. Was planning on playing co op with someone.

But the game is indeed AWESOME haha

Ju4758d ago (Edited 4758d ago )

Maybe. The whole point of the game is Steam, though. I am curious how the PS3 MP works without - if at all. I doubt it will. We'll find out. And you need to link your Steam account to a PSN account. So either way, you better be sure you never play the PC version as a PS3 gamer or vice versa.

DigitalAnalog4757d ago (Edited 4757d ago )

Why are you so adamant on linking your PS3's steam account? If you REALLY want to play a co-op game on your PS3 on to your PC, just make a separate steam account on your PS3 (as if that's a problem, since many PS3 users have multiple accounts on different regions). This way you can localize your co-op on your PC. Is this so hard to fathom?

UNLESS of course the PC voucher code can only be redeemed with the exclusive steam account on the PS3.

-End statement

paintsville4757d ago

There's no way I'd put ANY kind of code, personal info, or anything that i didn't what to expose to the world on my hackomatic ps3. NO WAY.

NukaCola4757d ago

@paintesville.

The trolling gets old man. Grow up.

Anyway, this is pretty cool. I honestly don't have a good enough PC, but my brother does, so I would probably just let him have the code. I wouldn't sell it, cause that is shady.

killershadow1174758d ago (Edited 4758d ago )

Yea, it will probably be against the terms of use to sell it just like selling a steam account on ebay.
*Edit* I was thinking that maybe they did this instead so that people on the PS3 can give there friends the code so they can play the coop with them, or maybe I'm wrong. Either way if it is true then I am going to see if I can talk my friends or maybe see if someone on here will want to give me a PC code to play with them. I am going to be playing the shit out of this game if that happens!

thorstein4758d ago

Valve has already stated that you can't play your PC version at the same time you play the PS3 version.

xYLeinen4758d ago

Won't this decrease potential sales for Valve? Sweet deal tho, but seems a bit unbelievable imo.

Fishy Fingers4758d ago

I guess they want console gamers to check out Steam, and perhaps even install it on their PCs which will no doubt lead to them picking up other products in the sales and whatnot.

Kamikaze1354758d ago

That most definitely makes sense. Even if people buy these codes off of eBay, some will more than likely be new to Steam and eventually make purchases off of Steam sooner or later.

TheIneffableBob4758d ago

Yeah, Valve does what some might consider "crazy" things to get people on Steam. They hired some modders to make Alien Swarm on the Source engine--complete with co-op campaign, voice acting, AI director, mod support, and all that--only to give away the game for free to attract users to Steam.

NBT914758d ago

You seem like you might know what all this is about :D

I do not suppose you, or anyone else could let me know if this applies to both USA and the EU versions of Portal 2?
Reason I ask is that I was getting the PS3 version this Friday when it releases in the UK just because it looks great anyway, so if I can give my friend a code to play the co-op with him then that has to be the coolest thing any dev has done for a while...

starcb264758d ago

I installed steam like a month ago and I want to buy the orange box and Gary's mod.

badz1494758d ago

will this code be available in all Portal copy for all regions? sometimes, different region have different offerings too. I bought inFAMOUS but there was no UC2 beta, I bought GoW collection but there was no GoW3 demo, I bought KZ3 CE but there's no SOCOM beta and I also don't think my MoH contains BF3 demo too! kinda frustrating and I hope this is not limited to NA only!

Redempteur4758d ago

for me it's easier to decide if i buy a game when i can use it on 2 different platforms without trouble

Neo Nugget4758d ago

Well that would have been nice to know beforehand.

RedDragan4758d ago

It don't bother me, I can't play both online at the same time anyway and if I do coop then it will be with someone I know who already has the game... which is most people.

PS3 Supremacy4758d ago

I heard you can't play both versions at once though since your steam account will be tied to your psn account. So even if you give it to a friend, you won't be able to play together at the same time. That's pretty much the only limitation.

shadowknight2034758d ago

Yeah thats what I thought i read too

killershadow1174758d ago

That may be so, but if the code is separate from the game and isn't activated when you link the ps3 portal 2 to steam then how would it know if your friend, who you gave the code to and activated it on a different steam account and you, are playing at the same time?

TronEOL4758d ago (Edited 4758d ago )

Haven't you seen the code Valve emails you when you register a new computer to your Steam account? I'm pretty sure THAT'S what the code is. It's just telling Valve you bought the game, now you can use that one-time-code in the linking process.

Meaning this code may be completely necessary to link your PSN account to Steam account. And if you don't do that then you'll be playing exclusively on PS3 with no Steamworks support. So it may just be a "link-code" rather than a full game download code.

:EDIT: Not to mention you need to be PLAYING the PS3 version to link your accounts. As I tried linking them thru Steam the other day and it said I haven't done it yet.

killershadow1174758d ago

That actually makes a lot of sense, you may be right there. I guess we have to wait till Tuesday to see.

BattleAxe4758d ago

I think Killershadow might be right, but heres the only problem with this that I can come up with. Maybe you have to enter that code in to link your PS3 account to your Steam account.

Neo Nugget4758d ago

Mmmm, yeah. I think you'll have to do something like Netflix has you do. Retrieve a code on your computer to enter on your PS3 or something like that.

Steam's highest-rated game is now less than a dollar in the Spring Sale

Jack writes: "Yet again browsing the latest offers in the Steam Spring Sale has led us to track down the very best. In terms of price to quality, we don’t think that it gets much better than this. Portal 2 is now less than a dollar, and if you haven’t got it already, now is the time to pick it up."

TheEroica38d ago

Portal deserves to be one of steams highest rated games... It's almost tetris levels of perfect game design.

TheEnigma31338d ago

It's a great game, but highly overrated. But for $1, it's an amazon deal.

Friendlygamer38d ago

Valve should bring their games to ps5

Kados37d ago (Edited 37d ago )

Gotta love Steam. Just got Portal 2 for .97 cents CAD. Should have been $1.29, selected the bundle with Portal 1 and 2, which gets a 25% discount, already have Portal 1, so it removes the cost of that, and still applies the full 25% bundle discount to Portal 2. 90% + 25% discount.

Friendlygamer37d ago

That's sweet, I've been thinking about building a modest pc to play some oldies

Infinite but not the first two games? Witcher 3 but not the first two games?? GTA V but not literally any of the games before it??? Portal 2 but not the first? Also if you're going to play Shadow of The Colossus play the remaster and not the remake. Can't say I disagree with the list but my man it's all over the place.

Name Last Name45d ago

I mean some sequels are objectively better and you don’t need to play the whole series.

Inverno45d ago

But most of these games have a story to follow, sure you can catch up with a YouTube vid but where's the fun in that?

LucasRuinedChildhood45d ago (Edited 45d ago )

A list like this isn't telling you not to play the previous games if you want to. It's just giving you legendary games to play.

But tbh, you don't always have to force yourself to play every entry in a franchise to get to the better ones.

- The vast majority of Witcher 3 players never played the first 2 and had a great time. The first 2 games aren't in the same league.
- The GTA games are self-contained with the odd fun reference. You can easily jump into any of them.
- The Shadow Of The Colossus remake looks and controls better than the original (plus it has a 60fps option while the remaster is just 30fps). New players will enjoy it more.
- Portal 2 is a lot better than Portal 1 and takes the concept much further gameplay-wise. Storywise, Portal 1 is fairly light too. Not that you shouldn't play it but realistically ... you'd love Portal 2 whether you play it or not (at lot of Portal 2 players have never played 1).

Bioshock 1 is the only one I agree with you on simply because it's one the best games of all time and arguably better than Infinite. No other setting like Rapture.

Looking at the list, I'd recommend playing Uncharted 1 before 2 but no doubt, 2 is the legendary one you have to play.

Inverno45d ago

I get it, but that's just my opinion on his opinion. I just think that before you play a sequel you should still play what came before it. Maybe it's just me but i find it fascinating playing through the first game in a series and seeing how it has evolved through its sequels. Like I said I don't disagree with the list, other than SoTC which I strongly believe the remaster of the original should be played above the remake.

AuraAbjure45d ago

Awesome list! Hot take on Fear (and it's hard af expansion Persaus Mandate!) Bioshock Infinite is stellar, so is the Witcher 3 and you nailed it by having Ocarina of Time. So many fantastic games! Gotta play 'em all! Next one on my list is Prey after I beat Dead Space 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction.

valve suck so much at making games now, opting just to smaug on top of an enormous pile of money,
that fans got so desperate that they have to make their own games.
this industry is fucking over.
