DICE: We've already built a better game than Call of Duty

As EA's CEO John Riccitiello continues to tip Battlefield 3 as being "the best product in the industry this year", the game's executive producer Patrick Bach thinks that the developer already built a better game than Call of Duty in 2010.

Bad company 2 and all Battlefields before Bad company 1

Edit---looks like he was talking about Bc2 haha

Pwnage2u4778d ago

Everyone know this when DICE announced Battlefield 3.

NewMonday4777d ago

I plan to get the PS3 game to play with friends, and the PC game for the power and 64 player mode, I just wish I can carry over my progress using my EA account.

Commander_TK4777d ago

Depends on which COD game we're talking about really.

darthv724777d ago

try explaining that to the millions of COD fans out there who dont give a crap about anything else.

It isnt about who made it better its about who can sell it better. That's a real shame.

sdtarm4777d ago

Battlefield might be good but the best product in the industry this year? pfff right..

captain-obvious4777d ago

i'll really laugh if this game got lower scores than black ops

Lich1204777d ago

I won't laugh because Im really looking forward to another great dice game. BF2 had me hooked for nearly a year and I want that feeling again!

As for the version, Im going to have to rock the PC since Ill feel like Im cheating myself not getting the best graphical experience. After all, I haven't really had a chance to push my PC since I've basically been using it as a SC2 box for the last year.

stevenhiggster4777d ago

@newmonday

I have the same problem as you, all my friends will be getting it on PS3. But I have a decent rig and want the best version possible. Oh the dilemma, I don't want to buy the same game twice!

AngryTypingGuy4777d ago

A lot of the sales success of a game has to do with the amount of buzz it creates. Battlefield 3 is already a success in that department, and I'm sure the buzz will only increase between now and launch, especially if they put out a kick-ass E3 trailer, which you know they will.

Vherostar4777d ago

Well you might get to carry over your ps3 progress to ps3 thanks to steam cloud which is coming to ps3 later this month if EA want to do a deal as I can see a LOT of games using this in the future just a shame MS won't ever allow this on 360.

nickjkl4777d ago

building a better game is not the problem its just that call of duty is a cheap thrill

call of duty you just jump in kill people doesnt really take much skill

battle field on the other hand is a different type of playstyle which isnt suited for everyone

hamburger1234777d ago

I am happy that all those Cod kids dont play Battlefield. They're campers anyway.

rbrtchng4777d ago

@hamburger

Huh? You do realize that camping is actually a good strategy in BC games right? That's what the sniper class is for. And BO is impossible to camp. But the point is Battlefield requires much more thinking and teamwork and strategy than COD, but because of that, COD is more accessible.

nickjkl4777d ago

i think he means camping in the corner with a shotgun waiting for some one to walkthrough the door to shoot them in the back

rather than the valid tactic of having a sniper and being up in a building or in a brush or in the mountains picking targets from a distance

DeFFeR4777d ago

rbrtchng - are you really going to try and argue that BO is impossible to camp in? Really?

Spas-12 has come to argue with you rbrtchng

So, unless they eliminated corners and doorways since I left December, I'm going to disagree with you 1000%.

"We've already built a better game than Call of Duty
but COD will continue to sell millions"

Fixed

I am not a COD fan or a COD hater just dont understand why people support Bobby Kotic.

jchirp264777d ago

Because the average person who plays Call of Duty doesn't know who Bobby Kotick, or don't care as long as they get their high of CoD.

bluegreenman4777d ago

I don't care how much of an asshole any corporate leader is... What does that have to do with a game being good? what are we? 2nd graders?

Lich1204777d ago

Thats fair blue, but I think some people wouldn't feel happy knowing they support a company that basically chews up employees and spits them out (and Im not just referring to West and Zampella, but entire studios that went under after Acti had burned everyone out on music games). That said, I don't have a problem with people buying CoD games, they're fun, personally I just lost interest after MW2.

4Sh0w4777d ago

No it depends on who you ask, I thought COD was a blast, sure it had big problems with cheating for awhile but I enjoyed the game nevertheless. Now Im addicted to Black Ops, dont care much for Battlefield, I know Im outnumbered here on n4g, but I dont care, I happily admit Im a huge COD fanboy, BO is easily my most played game by far since it was released in Nov.

jrbeerman114777d ago

have you tried any battlefield games?

4Sh0w4777d ago (Edited 4777d ago )

jrbeeman, yes I played Battlefield2 multiplayer for a couple of days, and while I can appreciate its a more teamwork oriented game than COD I just couldnt really get into it, MW2 is more fast paced, more action imo, and although the cheating was abundant for awhile I still had 2-3 hrs of great gaming everytime. I recently bought Crysis2, its a visual masterpiece, but the gameplay didnt really standout imo, still its a good game but I find myself quickly gravitating back to BO. I mean BO has been like crack for me over the last few months. I did not like the previous COD IP from Treyarch but I think they did an outstandanding job this time improving on IW formula that made COD4, and MW2 so great and its going to take a helluva lot more than some PR exec to pry me away from it. n4g thinks only young kids who dont know any better prefer COD series, but Im 36 and Ive been gaming since waaay back when the original Atari released, and I can tell you most of my buds are 25-40 and most all of them love COD just as much as I do.

DeFFeR4777d ago

4sh0w - it won't take much to drop you from BO - one day, you'll overdose, become unconscious, and accidentally put CoD4 or BFBC2 in your system during your early afternoon haze.

You'll be going "HOLY CRAP - this patch is AWESOME" and then you'll be "WOAH! The maps are waaay better! I can't believe they gave them to me free!" and then you'll run around trying to spray n' pray and knife, but your K/D will be negative 4, and then you'll realize that you're not in that world anymore.

THAT sir, is rock bottom, and you're falling fast.

4Sh0w4777d ago (Edited 4777d ago )

yeah DeFFer, maybe youre right, but like any delusional crack head, Im stuck in my ways and enjoying the hell out of my fall, from my viewpoint up here it looks like I have quite a long ways to go, hell I can even see a few obstacles down there in the distance, cant make out what they are for sure from up here but its possible at least 1 might be the next COD IP, if Im lucky maybe that could sober me up and break my fall if not, ahh well then someday perhaps Ill see you at rock bottom.

The Call of Duty haters need to **** OFF.

Seriously im tired of hearing ppl complain about COD. gimme a break, COD is an amazing series... the hate should probably be on Activision if anything.

DeFFeR4777d ago

CoD is arcade shooter.

BFBC2 is simulation-ish shooter.

It's like comparing Gran Turismo with Burnout - same overall genre (shooters) with totally different mechanics and results.

The "haters" are those people who think that CoD is supposed to be like BF and vise versa.

"DICE: We've already built a better game than Call of Duty"
we know DICE it's ok :)

DEagle-izer4778d ago

As a matter of fact, all that mudslinging is comming from EA's head John Riccitello.

DICE do have the intentions of winning back the #1 spot as supreme reigning FPS, but with Riccitello hell bent on crushing COD, You will hear statements like that a lot from him, not too much from DICE since it's a given.

Dart894778d ago

I will repost what i put on another article about this.

Of course it will but because so many little kids think cod is the best game they will say otherwise cod blah blah blah blah.

Hell cod is outdated i even think GOW2 looks better than cod.

But i rather have quality than the same shiznit every year that does nothing to but slap on a new skin and call it a game.

Takoulya4777d ago

I hate CoD a lot, but to say that God of War 2 looks better than Call of Duty 4 and later is a very delusional statement. Art style can be argued, but technically, CoD is a more graphically advanced game.

Kingdom Come4778d ago

Despite my hatred for the Call of Duty franchise, I do think that DICE have been making some arrogant statements lately. I have no doubt in my mind that Battlefield 3 will be stunning, but why criticise other games to make yours sound good, when it speaks for itself...?

lastdual4778d ago

Agreed. Turning this into an "our game is better" pissing match just makes you look like you're trying too hard.

Let BF3 speak for itself. I honestly have no doubt that the multiplayer will be stellar, but I hope we don't get stuck with a 4 hour campaign.

gorebago4778d ago (Edited 4778d ago )

That's why capitalism is good - it gives consumers choice. This is just your typical pr to hype up your own product. Lots of money spent means extra pressure.

It's up to us to decide which one we think will be better on an individual base. There's nothing stopping a gamer from enjoying both games either which is what I will and have done (with bd2 and mw2 a year ago).

I like gaming, not brands. Not off topic.

LunaticBrandon4778d ago

Unfortunately the only way you're going to beat Call of Duty is to be as loud and obnoxious as some of the CoD devs and have a huge advertising budget. Whether or not you have a better game is irrelevant.

4777d ago
The_Nameless_One4777d ago

@gorebago:
Capitalism is good until you introduce greed into the equation. Once you do that the whole formula comes apart.

gorebago4777d ago (Edited 4777d ago )

nameless - greed is human nature

even the most socialistic economies start and end with one person holding all the resources and forcing everyone else to divie up the bread rations.

i'm all about the marketplace of ideas and choices. capitalism provides that. ea and activision will give us a choice as to which game we want and we get to choose.

some will go with the tried and true and buy cod.

some will opt for something different and get b3.

some will buy both.

some won't buy either and choose something else.

the world will not end.

then the next year the cycle repeats and so on and so forth. companies will claim their products are superior and while perhaps truthful, we make the choice.

honestly as much as i enjoy the series, i believe that cod will at some point become irrelevant because of diminishing returns. it happened to tony hawk, guitar hero and other series. that's unless they innovate their formula but since they're being rewarded handsomly with huge sales, why should they?

You can't really blame them if interviewers keep asking them about it. They're just answering the question.

downwardspiral4777d ago (Edited 4777d ago )

No doubt that battlefield will be a good game, but to me it comes off as a cheesy reassurance when they gotta mention their game better than another game etc etc. Just let the game do the talking when its released.

InLaLaLand4777d ago

I agree with Kingdom Come. This is what DICE is 'saying' to Activision and Call of Duty lol.

Auto Modelista.. a PS2 capcom racer!! A blast to play and great graphics!
Maximo!
Rival Schools!

Spec Ops: The Line was super dark.

Incredible story.

SheenuTheLegend74d ago

all the games in the above list are bang on. this is the only reason we need backwards compatibility and physical presense of games for the upcoming future, no matter what.

Yi-Long74d ago

Honorable mention to the excellent Driveclub, one of the best racing games of all-time and one of my favourite games ever.

melons74d ago

yes! incredible rain effects; so good to drive along in rain with your Spotify playlist blaring

Skuletor74d ago

I really wanted a MotorStorm using the same engine, Driveclub is easily one of the best looking games on PS4 and I'm surprised they didn't even give it a PS4 Pro patch.

ravens5274d ago

Yes indeed. May just install it on my PS5. You know, physical copy and all.

I have quite a few of these. Timed licenses suck.

Terry_B74d ago (Edited 74d ago )

wow...I have all of them except the Nintendo ones either in physical or digital version.

I was able to find games in the Vietnam dlc on ps3 the last week. There were articles on here about the server closure when it was announced in April

DaReapa148d ago

BF1943 is the only online MP game that I was genuinely interested in. Been playing since launch 14 years ago. Hate that I couldn't put in as much time to play as I'd hoped for during the final week.

Inverno148d ago

I got really into 43 when I bought Bf3, and preferred it. Everything that I disliked or found annoying about Bf3, wasn't an issue in 43. Too bad they never bothered releasing it on PS4 or PC.

1nsomniac148d ago (Edited 148d ago )

Dead Space 2...... I wasn't even aware that had multiplayer. Nevermind that it was apparently one of their best multiplayers!

anast147d ago

Once people stop buying micros, these companies close the doors.

Xenial147d ago

Dead Space 2 multiplayer had been hanging on for years - I'd boot my PS3 up to see some familiar names in lobbies. This will definitely be missed!

And it still says nothing about being able to downloaded even when it's off the storefront, that's a huge ouchie for some who somehow still have it in their backlog...

Dont make it an issue when it's not. If you haven't played it in 15 years, chances are you'll never play it.

zidane1341412d ago (Edited 412d ago )

Online game servers shut off eventually all the time. Doesn’t matter if you have the disc or not. Even if you have the disc, it’ll be just paperweight unless the game lets you connect directly to a friend or LAN play.

isarai412d ago (Edited 412d ago )

Read the article bro. They are delisting the games, including mirrors edge which is an offline game. Online servers i can understand, not being able to buy/download the games anymore? Completely separate issue, especially seeing as how some these games had lengthy sp campaigns and not just mp.

zidane1341412d ago

@israrai, you can still buy the disc for less then 10$. Hardly a loss.

TheEnigma313412d ago

You shouldn't have to buy the disc, that's the issue.

OhReginald412d ago (Edited 412d ago )

Some brilliant minds created servers to keep these old online games alive. A lot of ps2 and ps3 games that had there servers shut down a long time ago have been restored by fans to keep it going. Warhawk, killzone 2, socom 2/ confrontation, resident evil outbreak series, etc.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 412d ago
DankSinatra411d ago

The disc still exist. I don’t understand the issue. You guys are upset about that “all digital future” yet these games are not “digital only”. Hell digital only is a minority in the gaming world and so far we haven’t moved into it, the only digital only games are games as a service or online only games, which end up failing in the end.

This is no different than a store that stops selling old games, just go and buy a copy somewhere else. So which is it, you hate all digital or you like it? Make up your mind.

isarai411d ago

Talk about missing the point entirely. I'm not going to sit here and explain it to you, figure it out.

DankSinatra411d ago

Talk about whining about something and not wanting to explain from an off handed sarcastic original comment.

I got the point just fine. You’re literally complaining about something that has an easy alternative to it.

ManMarmalade411d ago

I don't think you got the point

DankSinatra411d ago (Edited 411d ago )

@ManMarmalade

No I got it, it has to do with the push towards a future of all digital and reprocussions of losing games. Something I already stayed that hasn’t happened nor is it large enough right now to cause any issues as the games that are all digital are online only to begin with or make up the minority of games

So I’ll say it again, the disc still exists for these games that are over a decade old and can still be played easily. You guys are contradicting the whole “we don’t want a digital only future” crying when the dude I originally responded to stated:

“Read the article bro. They are delisting the games, including mirrors edge which is an offline game. Online servers i can understand, not being able to buy/download the games anymore? Completely separate issue, especially seeing as how some these games had lengthy sp campaigns and not just mp.“

So again, which is it? Do you hate all digital or do you want it?

Inverno412d ago

On PC I don't think it's much of a problem but I'm sad to see BF43 being shut down. I haven't played it in a while since it's stuck on PS3, but i preferred it way more over BF3. It was the lack of invisible barriers which made it better for me.

badz149412d ago

BFBC2 was still the best overall package offered by the franchise so far IMO

porkChop412d ago

Absolutely. BC2 was such a great game. It's a shame we never got BC3.

P_Bomb411d ago

I had a great run on Bad Company 2. Pound for pound, as solid a BF package as there’s been.

InUrFoxHole412d ago

Does anyone play the last BF anymore? I searched crossplay servers and it was 20 people the most on all the servers? Can never find a game

SonyStyled412d ago

The last BC you mean? I was still able to find 10v10 on ps3 2 years ago on NA servers during the evenings. I have all the free and paid dlc installed, but there want any matches in the Vietnam dlc.
