do people honestly doubt the ps3 will surpass the 360? Sony's idea of continued support for years to come will pretty much guarantee that it will pass the 360 install base at some point.

Like when the SNES passed up the Genesis. We knew it would happen but it didnt happen as quickly as many believed. That is nothing against Nintendo it just means the Genesis was a very popular system and good competition to the SNES.

People want to dismiss the 360 as a competitor this gen when they have already surpassed their initial install base of the original xbox. That is a big win for MS if you think about it. Maybe more important than whatever position they are holding at the atm.

It not only tells MS that people took them serious enough to buy their product but it also tells Sony and Nintendo that they weren't just in it for the quick buck.

Who believed that a newcomer could take on the industry giants and turn a few heads? Sony was the newcomer once and had many skeptics saying they wouldnt last against nintendo and sega. They proved many to be wrong.

The 360 should be given some respect for being a real competitor this gen. The lead wouldnt last forever but it lasted much much longer than skeptics had proclaimed.

Darth I think it more a question of if the ps3 can pass the 360 before the new concoles start coming out. I think if it doesnt after that point no will care cause everyones focus with then be one the new concoles.

I think MS will likely be the one to release a new concoles 1st. Cauese they been one the market the longest and MS has also said in the pass they they would like to be the 1st one to release the next new concoles. I think there a good chance we will see something on their next system at the 2012 E3

That is what this gen reminds me of. Genesis came out first and turned many heads and grabbed market share from nintendo. That forced the hand of nintendo to release the snes when they did. Otherwise they would have continued to milk the NES for a while longer. Actually....they did. Nothing wrong with that but you figure they were splitting themselves between old and new and I think it slowed them down.

It wasnt until they fully committed a greater percentage of their time and efforts that turned the tide in their favor. Going full on with marketing and securing deals that Sega couldnt really counter. Ultimately snes passed the genesis but that was around the time when sony was coming on the market and sega had their saturn to release.

This gen is so similar that it almost puts MS in that sega role with sony playing out the part of nintendo. Sony is split between supporting the old and new that it is having some affect on them putting all their efforts into marketing the ps3 and its games.

MS has just the 360 so you can see they dont have to split their time. They also dont have to deal with the overhead of having a large stable of 1st party developers. There is obviously a reason MS went with that approach. It probably costs them less $$$ to buy exclusive dlc or games than the pay for the manpower to develop them in house.

Is that a good thing??? Not in the eyes of gamers who think exclusives run the show because they would have a really small list of "exclusives". MS wanted to develop a platform that is as user friendly and developer friendly as possible. It seems to have worked as I think it is the only platform with the highest amount of 3rd party support.

The PS3 passing the 360 wont unsettle MS in the least. They are riding high on their own success that the platform has achieved. It is being referenced in popular culture and tv shows and movies and sports arenas much like sony was doing with the PS2.

How they translate this win into the next gen will be the real make or break for them. You cant be expecting success right from the gate. Unfortunately that is what sony was hoping for like the ps2 had. It took a few changes but it is nice that the ps3 is hitting its stride.

6 years in to the 360 is not a bad return on investment. They have nothing to be ashamed of if they were to announce a new system for 2012. I think many are expecting that.

This isn't a race in the normal sense people conceive of it. There are completely different dynamics at work. It isn't really a matter of waiting until the end and seeing who is ahead then. For developer support and mindshare during the prime years of the generation what matters is the installed base during those core years.

It's a hollow victory in a console war if you are behind your competitor virtually the entire generation and only manage to edge ahead in the twilight of the generation.

The 360 really deserves respect for keeping the ps3 in third place for this long. According to the official number from Sony and Microsoft, there is actually still some way to go for the ps3 to break even, all speculation aside.

We have to remember that the ps3 was the successor to the ps2, which gave it the biggest and best brand awareness lead any company could ever wish for. The Ps3 arguably failed to take advantage of this crucial advantage and is still left languishing in third place 6 years after the 360 release.

Not only that, but the ps3 also had a huge advantage in terms of its blu-ray player. The blu-ray inclusion was actually the one thing that made me buy a ps3. Doubtlessly, millions of other consumers still see this as a crucial advantage today - and why not, it's a terrific feature.

I have to ask, though, given these huge advantages, did anyone expect the 360 to do this well, especially considering the RROD debacle?

If we are all honest I think we would have to agree that overall, the 360 has done much better than we expected, while the ps3 didn't do quite as well as we expected, at least in its first five years.

Yes, the 360 is doing a lot better than the original Xbox.
The ONLY reason why the 360 kept the PS3 in "third place" is because it launched earlier and was ahead by about 8 million by the time the PS3 launched.

YET the PS3 is still doing better. By the simple fact that it keeps selling faster than 360, cutting that gap by about 5 million since launch BECAUSE of those advantages you spoke of plus more.

But yes, PS3's momentum could have been better if they released simultaneously.

although I been a sony fan (not fanboy) since the ps1 era, and even if the ps3 will surpass (if not yet) the xbox360 on console sales. I can't deny the fact that sony are the losers this gen out of the 3 consoles. They went from dominating the market during the previous 2 generations (PS1, PS2) to fight head to head with microsoft and (the wii is far ahead of both regarding to sales).

It was supposed to happen in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010. Now will the PS3 overtake the 360 in 2011? What does it even matter anymore when we're this far into the generation? Whether or not the PS3 ever passes the 360, it has still been a tremendous failure after the PS2's utter domination last gen.

Go back to 2006. Who would have ever imagined that the almighty PlayStation 3 would still be struggling to take SECOND PLACE five years later. It would have sounded like crazy talk. The PlayStation brand name alone should have sold the console. The built in Blu-Ray player is the sole reason for a rather large percentage of purchases. The system sells in far more parts of the world than the Xbox 360.

When it comes down to it, Microsoft has made leaps and bounds this generation with the Xbox brand, solidifying its place in the industry and becoming the go-to console for hardcore gamers with the most streamlined and feature-rich online service. On the other hand, Sony seems to have only gone backwards this gen, and it has pretty much become nothing more than a game of catch-up. Rather sad, really.

The PSN is way better than what it use to be. 360 the goto hardcore console for gamers? Please the 360 just got built in wifi last year, still uses dvd, which now they have to upgrade in order to have more room. 360 still using a disc tray, the wii doesn,t even use a disc tray.

The people are showing you which console is the choice for gamers. The PS3 is selling faster than the 360. The one year headstart by the 360 is gone. 2010 the release of Halo Reach, and Kinect, the PS3 still outsold the 360 by 2.3m. Gears3 the only game worth getting this year on the 360. Now thats sad.

Lets see MS tend to keep all there secrets close but with the lack of major first party studios is a concern. I predict at E3 it will be something Kinect related and the possibility of a more hardcore kinect game.
If sony do reduce the price then it will sell but i can't see it happening this year. Lots of exclusives, NGP, Move... lot going on

At this point in the generation, exclusive games are not what is going to sell consoles. I don't know about Twisted Metal, but every Uncharted and Resistance fan already owns a PS3, because the series has only appeared on the PS3. I believe Gran Turismo 5 will have been the last big system seller exclusive for the PS3.

What's going to drive sales now are gadgets like Kinect and price drops.

Be reasonable 3 seconds and think :
From the beginning of the year, did the PS3 outsold the 360 in the US by more than 50 000 units ?
KZ3, Yakuza 4, LBP2 and so much more exclusives released and 360 is still first.

It means with "no games" the 360 is first in the US, now think the same with games like Gears of War, Forza...

US people dont buy PS3, maybe it's too expensive, it's not a question of game, they actually buy the console that have no exclusive since the end of 2010.

Too expencive? Really is it 2005 again? It's $299 and for basically your home hub of ALL medium sounds like a good deal to me. It'd cost more to build a media PC... that doesn't have BR, Wi-fi, Games.

The 360 is DIRT cheap, but so are last generation phones ( not smart phones ) yet it's iPhone and Android that sell the most. Funny, it's not the price or the games that prevent people from buying it, it's the fact that every year in theU.S some Call Of Duty player brings over his friend shows him Black Ops, MW2 or what ever and insists he gets a 360 and that game so they can play. It's not a genius marketing ploy by Microsoft it's just the fact that a large majority of people are stupid and don't play a varied range of games.

I, too, have both consoles (and I think I left a Wii around here somewhere...) and have always primarily used my 360. If a game is to be released on multiple consoles, I get it for the 360. But I think the PS3 maaaayyyyy be changing that this year. I pre-ordered Portal 2 for the PS3 rather than the Xbox and it looks like I might do the same for MK9. The PS3 is just having better perks than the Xbox is now. I can definitely see a change in tide this year, but for the love of my gamerscore, I hope not.

Games, games, games, and yet COD Black Ops is PS3's best selling game to date world wide.

I got burnt out on the series after Modern Warfare 1, but it looks as though PS3 fans outside N4G support multi platform games, and the list is huge for the rest of this year. Tough choices ahead.

In Europe, COD and Fifa are the most played games on the PS3 (similar on the 360), that is all they play throughout the whole year until the new ones come out. It is pretty sad that some people have that mindset (yeah I know the economy is bad to) but they buy it first day full price along with the map packs/ultimate team packs.

It doesn't matter if COD: Black ops is the best selling game of the PS3. This gives us a hint to what the majority of gaming consumers we have this generation. So far, it hasn't stopped SONY's exclusives from selling decently which means a lot of 'core' gamers have a tremendous support to said games.

The only "red" flag that needs to be hoisted is when you finally see the gap between core and pick-n-play games like COD getting wider and wider. This basically determines what gaming would become in the near future. This is why even mediocre games like Homefront can still sell better than most quality exclusives/multi-plat titles. But like I said, while there is a constant "niche" or support for other genre's/exclusives, then gaming still has hope for this and the next generation.

It should be interesting to see the sales numbers come e3 because from what ms are saying kinect is selling very well and they can't all be to users who already have a console. I think ms are now starting to do what they should of done a few years ago and start to make all the devices/software they make work with each other. And I expect to see wp7 and the 360 starting to work with each other alot more we already have fable and poker games that like into the 2 360 games we saw the kinect ball game working with wp7 and they have just started to use Silverlight on the 360 which is what runs the wp7 games. Yes I know alot of you say you don't like wp7 but with the nodo update out out is starting to show where ms are going with the device. I expect so see more Zune parts added to the 360 too. But I also expect to see alot of exclusive games at e3 so far we know we have gears 3 forza4 but not heard much about the ones we were shown in Japan last year yet plus I expect kinect to get more things added to it too. And I would also expect 343 to drop a bomb at e3 about the next halo game too.

I don't expect much from Sony this year for the ps3 as they have seemed to of told us already what is coming out I expect there e3 to be all about the Ngp which I really can't wait for but ms seem to manage to keep games under wraps where Sony seem to tell us all the time about new games but I don't expect any of the sales of the consoles to start to drop anytime soon. Sony have finaly built up a head of steem and giving us some amazing games and ms said the first 6 months of this year was about pushing kinect and that's what they have done and they said after that we would start to see core game for kinect so lets see if they live up to that.

I agree. There is always a potential every year for the PS3 to overtake 360 in terms of sales but it never happened.

Well, unless Sony boost it with great bundles deals, price cuts, or adding more popular services/third party games to their console exclusively .. For example FFXIII versus has a potential to draw more JRPG players to the system. Now if they combined that with more JRPG games, they can convince more crowd to join the ps3 community.

The five reasons are mentioned in the site are good positive reasons to own a ps3 but this only keeps the sales consistence and it will not boost it to a sudden overtake.

To be honest, the only game I care about on 360 this year is Gears of War 3. Any 3rd-party game I buy is usually on the PS3, just for the simple fact the PS3 is my console of choice. Looking forward to Twisted Metal and Gears 3.

Is this article simply re-posted every few months, year after year? At this point in these consoles lives its a moot point where the ps3 and 360 sit in the utterly pointless standings, and in any case, who cares? New consoles will probably be announced in the next year or two anyways.

Actually, while everything on that list is true, this has always been the case. What is noticable is the exclusives.

There are so many exclusives coming out or planned for 2011, it's just insane.

Of course, the 360 has no good exclusives except Gears of War 3. Other exclusives fanboys would say like xCom or Codename Kingdom or any other, the general gamer hasn't heard of those. The only people aware of those are hardcore gamers.

I like the overall PS3 exclusives better but the heavy hitters, meaning exclusive shooters are on the 360, Halo and Gears. When PS3 software sales overtake 360 sales, then I'll be impressed. That's where the numbers matter. Sony can thank Microsoft if they actually do catch it up when it comes to sales. The 360 had a really good start not only cause it came out first but also in the early days of it it actually had alot of good exclusives nowadays it seems like MS is purely focused on Kinnect, Halo, Gears and Forza and have forgooten about sequels for some of their other exclusives.

I have not turned on the 360 since november so i do hope it works when i turn it on in the autum when forza 4 comes to the european shores but in the meantime i will enjoy my gaming on the PS3.

Too bad that's a statistic we'll never really know. I know there was an article the other day where some outfit said they knew how many were active. And there were people saying it's easy to tell because "all you have to do is just" scan the internet for MAC addresses and you'll know. Too bad those people don't live in reality, because there's really no reliable way to do that and not every console is connected to the internet.

But I digress. I agree with you that reliability took a hit this generation. Of the three consoles I own (PS3, 360 and Wii) the Wii is the only one that hasn't gone belly up on me with a general hardware failure. My 360 was fixed for free by Microsoft, and Sony charged me $99 to swap my broken 60GB model with a refurbished 120GB slim. I made that choice because Linux was gone (yeah, I'm the one guy who actually used it) and I didn't have any PS2 games left. I feel great about that decision.

Keep on using them. It's so worth it!

Reading many of the comments here, and the comments on many articles like this, I have to wonder why people have such an emotional investment in this topic? Every platform this generation is successful when it comes to sales. The install base is there for developers to be able to make money regardless of which platform they develop for.

So what do we, as gamers, generally do? We devolve into crowing over which platform is *more* successful. Like it really matters. Nobody gets a patch to sew on their gamer jacket if their console of choice passes another in sales.

I'm happy with how this generation has played out overall. There are 3 great console platforms and each has its own strengths. I'm glad to be able to play the best games, regardless of which console they release on.

I hope every company sells a billion of these things so that the great software keeps on coming. And when they're ready to release the next generation of consoles I'll be standing right there with my wallet in my hand ready to keep the train rolling.

Listen, I won both 360 and Ps3, and I own or plan on owning the following mentioned titles but, I have to disagree with the "latest and greatest shooters" statement. The Ps3 has proved its worth with Warhawk, Killzone 2, Killzone 3, MAG, and soon, Socom 4, Resistance 3, Uncharted 3, Starhawk, and a recently announced unnamed FPS currently in development. While the 360 has what, 2 exclusive shooters? Halo and Gears? Black Ops, other COD titles, and multiplats don't count because it's available on both consoles. The 360 used to dominate the FPS genre, but until it broadens it's offering of exclusive AAA shooters, I'll stick with the Ps3 for now as it gives me much more games in terms of shooters to look forward to.

Why do ppl still think its all about the exclusives that's going to have the ps3 pass the 360? If that was the case it would have passed it back when mgs4 came out or when gt5 came out cause half the world was waiting to buy a ps3 for that game amiright? Ms was plain smart in launching first. U could cry all you want that it wasn't fare the reality is I'm sure ms would much rather of had the run away success sony had with the ps2 and start with that kind of momentum over a 12 month head start. Think about it all it really took was 12 months to kill off such a strong momentum sony had coming off the ps2.

You do realize your argument makes no sense, right? It's not about exclusives. It's about what Sony has to offer compared to what Ms is putting on the table. In this case, Sony is offering a plethora of AAA titles and Move compatibility with those titles. While Ms is opting to develop for the casual audience and are relaying on Halo and Gears to appease their hardcore audience.

Overall Ms is doing very little to secure those very important exclusives that sell consoles. Sony has even confirmed BFBC3 as being lead developed on the Ps3, which is very important to hardcore gamers concerned about getting as much as they can out of their purchases. Being an owner of both consoles, knowing this myself, I'll be buying BFBC3 for the Ps3. Ms once lead with many a console game exclusivity when it first launched. Now the tables have very much turned, and Ms needs to think about their future. As does Sony. No one should turn a blind eye in this regard.

I agree with some of your points but how do i not make sense? if you read a lot of ppl responses here, they are still saying that when game x comes out it will over take the 360. after games like kz2,3, lbp, mgs, gt5, god of war etc they still havnt managed to out sell the 360 so dont you think that maybe just maybe after some 5 years its not about what exclusive is going to push the ps3 over the 360? especially when most of the games that sell a lot are multiplats.

now im not trying to downplay exclusives at all.. and i do agree that ms is fucking up by not locking down more exclusives better yet they should be expanding their 1st party instead of closing them down or letting them go and that leaves me asking just how serious they really are and if they even plan on coming out with another console cause exclusives are very important but imo its just not as important like most on here make it seem when it comes to sales. and you know what i have all 3 consoles well 2 1/2 i really dont touch the wii but my son loves it so if ms wants to go the way of the wii then fuck em sony has more studios than nin and ms combined to keep me happy so if ms wants to cater more to the casual and drop 1 or 2 exclusives for us it wouldnt hurt me one bit.

Perhaps all Ms did by launching a year early was delay the inevitable, and Sony, even in the beginning was bound to take the number one spot in the console race. I see your point. Perhaps Sony was merely bidding their time and opted to progressively offer more and more in terms of games and services. I for one am glad Sony dropped the whole Ps3 is a computer thing like it was when it first launched and made their main focus games. I'd like to see the 360 return to it's predecessors roots and really offer up some of those incredible single player experiences. Drop 1 or 2 exclusives, sure, but not most of them.

Lame article. It's 2011 and the PS3 at long last is a decent offering. My brother's girlfriend got him one for his birthday and he tried to sell it to me but I convinced him he should keep it and that it would be useful to have in the next year or two. I'm glad there's one in the house in case I want to play one of their exclusives.

Still, let's get real. The battle ended long ago. The Xbox 360 came out in Autumn 2005. If I tried to sell a console today on the basis that it might be worth owning in the year 2017, no one would buy it.

numbers matter they are all businesses. businesses need money to sustain themselves, they are not like the government that can print money out of thin air and still take it from you once a year. they can't make games only for the love of games they are to expsensive to create. long gone are the blockbuster homebrew passion driven developers. numbers matter because they are often copied and pasted that's why games are taking less risk and using existing game formulas. numbers matter because there if sales are good on your console then you will likely have new games developed on your platform. just a thought
