What is it with all of these games coming out as top down shooters? Lara Croft did it. Then Ghostbusters. Now Red Faction.

BigWoopMagazine4773d ago

And Burn Zombie Burn, Zombie Apocalypse, Dead Nation, Alien Breed, and depending on your perspective, Geometry Wars and Blast Factor. They must sell well... or be easy to make.

ftwrthtx4773d ago

But those came out as top down shooters. These other ones weren't originally.

It must be easy to make them.

It's reverse product evolution. Most big franchises started out in the era when all you COULD do was top down or side scrolling shooters, then evolved into first and third person shooters.

But with the advent of digital distribution, developers are realizing that they can spend 3 years toiling on a product that may or may not sell, or they can spend less time (and less money) working on a game, and can make decent amounts of money. You won't have a billion dollar game like Call of Duty, but you can easily recover the investment you put in and maybe even turn a profit.

It's a good in-between-big-releases kind of project, it helps to keep the name of your franchise in people's minds, and in some ways can be better than the big budget games.

Call of Duty did it too, sort of... but their top down shooter was a hidden mode in their main game, Black Ops.

I think a part of it is the popularity of retro gaming. Part of it is it is much cheaper to make a smaller scale game. Part of it is to keep a team busy during a down economy where it is harder to get funding for a bigger project -- better to keep your team busy on a smaller project than having to cut staff and then re-hire and re-train a whole new team later. I'm sure there are a million more.

ftwrthtx4773d ago

It's definitely a step backward, but not necessarily in a bad way.

Most are relatively cheap and are fun to play.

FACTUAL evidence4773d ago

Ok, so did they stop with the avatars now?....We have a lot of avi's now, but mostly capcom stuff that leads to either a street fighter, megaman, or a darkstalker.

BigWoopMagazine4773d ago

Cool, demos and Sonic, I'm down with that.

T3mpr1x4773d ago

Yep, any week with a classic Sonic game is fine by me!

dragon824773d ago

Not a bad update. Not the greatest either.

HolyOrangeCows4773d ago

I'm hoping for something big soon, like when they gave away Stacking for free.

Omegabalmung4773d ago

Just DL sonic 2 and the Qore episode. Thinking about getting Stardome for $4.99 and Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light for $7.99

ftwrthtx4773d ago

If you have the PlayStation Move, StarDrone is worth the price.

Rock Band Doesn't Need Plastic Instruments to Work

TheGamer Writes "Harmonix has proven plenty of times it can make Rock Band work without instruments."

I mean, yeah, but was anyone saying otherwise? The fact is people liked the plastic instruments rather than pressing buttons on a controller. They enjoyed the simulated experience.

isarai490d ago

"Work"? No, but to be good? It's absolutely necessary. Not having the accessories is like playing a lightgun shooter with an analog stick sure it works, but one experience is completely unique and fun as hell, and other is torture trying to make do playing in a way it was never meant to be played

LucasRuinedChildhood489d ago (Edited 489d ago )

"trying to make do in a way it was never meant to be played"

I disagree. The accessories were a fun gimmick (and very marketable) but they were added AFTER the genre had been well established with games like Frequency and Amplitude (both also made by Harmonix).

The gameplay formula is different on a controller - there's a focus on switching lanes and contributing to all of the instruments.

Never played Frequency, but Amplitude and Rock Band Blitz were really good. I would love to get more of that kind of game. It's basically a different part of the genre, and stands on its own.

isarai489d ago

The insurmountable difference in popularity between Amplitude and Rock Band proves my point

LucasRuinedChildhood489d ago (Edited 489d ago )

Popularity isn't proof of quality. If it was, then Harmonix wouldn't be making music for Fortnite now. lol. Our disagreement wasn't over which one is more popular. Amplitude and Blitz just aren't "torture" to play.

Rock Band 4 and Guitar Hero Live failed to revive their sub-genre, and Rock Band 4 caused Mad Catz to have to file for bankruptcy. Doesn't mean that instrument-based music games are bad.

It does mean that there's too much overhead and risk for anyone to take a gamble on a big budget game that needs instrument accessories now though.

For the genre to thrive, for now, it needs to do so without the instrument accessories. That's just a fact, unfortunately.

VR games like Beat Sabre (a new sub-genre) and traditional music games make more sense and are more viable right now.

*"If quality is always proved by popularity, then Harmonix wouldn't be making music for Fortnite now."

I think CHEAP plastic instruments is THE reason why the instrument-genre ‘died’.

People invested in buying the game AND the peripherals, so the guitar, the dj-set, the drum, whatever, and the experience was absolutely fantastic. Great fun, great music, etc.

But then the instruments would break. A button would stop working, or your hits wouldn’t register, and that kind of hardware failure would end in you not being able to play the game as intended, and thus you not getting the scores you deserve.

So, now you had a great game, but a broken instrument, and nobody is gonna buy a new plastic instrument every 3-6 months in order to keep playing the game.

A solution would have been to release better quality instruments (obviously), at a slightly higher price, so you could have kept the new games coming and the genre alive, but sadly, that didn’t happen.

dumahim489d ago (Edited 489d ago )

The only issue I ever had with any of the hardware was the drum pedal on the original rock band set stared to crack in half. The reason I, and other friends I know who played, lost interest is they weren't putting out new tracks that we were interested in anymore. I think earlier this year I looked through the releases for the last 2 years or so, and there was maybe 3 songs I would have bought.

slayernz489d ago

Yeah I had this happen too with my drum controller, I ended up attaching a metal strip to it which fixed it up nicely.

sinspirit489d ago

Can it work? Yes. Does it compare? No.

monkey602489d ago

Bust a Groove, Gitaroo Man and Parrapa the Rappa were such good games. Neither needed any extra peripherals

Looking back to 2011 and the Botched Launch of Test Drive Unlimited 2

Richard writes: "The series may have a cult following, but ten years on Test Drive Unlimited 2 still upsets me. It was one of my most anticipated games ever, with a concept years ahead of what Forza Horizon could achieve. But it remains one of the buggiest launches of a game I can remember, completely tarnishing my memory of it."
