VGLoaded - Who Needs A 3DS?

VGLoaded's James Chalmers asks Who Needs A 3DS especially when the DSi has so much to offer?

From the article -

"So who really needs a 3DS when there are so many quality titles in the DSi library? 3D Gaming isn’t a gimmick it will in the future be a huge part of how we play our games but the thing people seem to forget is that the Nintendo DS is loved and adopted by the casual market; hell my 50 year old mother has a DSi XL! While news this week that the 3DS has sold more in release week than the original DS it wasn’t until the introduction of the likes of Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training that the casual market exploded."

I know exactly what you mean, I've had a DSLite since it came out and havent been sold by the 3DS to spend that much money $249 on a new console when the only game that has caught my attention was SSFIV.

greengamer4791d ago

I disagree, Street Fighter IV is great but the likes of Rayman 3D, Ridge Racer 3D and the new Ghost Recon have kept me occupied for hours since it came out.

You seem to forget about the AR games built in which can be great fun too. I recommend giving the 3DS a go if you can and you will soon be persuaded to get one.

mmoplaya4791d ago

yeah but as the article states too apart from SSFIV there isn't really anything else at the current time that is tempting me.

Rayman has recieved mixed reviews, Ridge Racer the same.

I'll wait until the likes of Zelda, Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid is out and then give it a go!

greengamer4791d ago

Well like I said I recommend the console even just for the AR games built in.

Can't wait for Zelda and Metal Gear Solid though, Orcarina of Time in 3D - YES PLEASE!

dedicatedtogamers4791d ago

People are acting as if the 3DS selling more AT LAUNCH than the DS or Wii is an indication that the 3DS will be more popular. Pu-leeeeze.

Chazmers4791d ago

Exactly DS has so much more hardware out there compared to the 3DS!

Jio4791d ago (Edited 4791d ago )

You guys do realize the 3DS also plays DS games right? Also, the 3DS is the next generation which means if you hang on to your DS there aren't going to be any more new games coming.

You also seem to be forgetting that its barely launch. Did the DS have any good games at launch besides Mario? The Urbz, asphalt, puzzle games, shovelware, etc.

mmoplaya4791d ago

Nintendo have already said they will continue to develop for the DS. They would be foolish to abandon a handheld which has sold so many copies!

And 3D development at the current time will cost more than normal development so I'm sure companies are going to still want to develop for the DS as well as trying to work on the 3DS at the same time.

Sure the DS didn't have a strong launch but it did have Mario, the figurehead of a Nintendo Console. Suppose Super Street Fighter IV could be the lead title for 3DS but there isn't a proper BIG title like Zelda, Mario or Metal Gear Solid that can sell and promote the console from day one.

Jio4791d ago (Edited 4791d ago )

@mmoplaya, name ONE big Nintendo DS title coming out this year? Well I can name 5 for the 3DS, Mario, Zelda Ocarina of Time, Metal Gear Solid 3, Resident Evil Mercenaries, and Kid Icarus: Uprising.

When the DS came out, Nintendo stopped making games for the Gameboy even though up to that point it was their highest selling console. It would be stupid of them to continue spending money on an outdated system.

dedicatedtogamers4791d ago

@ Jio

Uhhhh, so far, Pokemon Black/White, Okamiden, Radiant Historia, Dragon Quest 6, Ghost Trick, a new Kirby game, and Kingdom Hearts are all 2011 titles. And those are ORIGINAL games, not ports (other than DQ6, which is a remake). Need I go on?

DNAbro4791d ago

um Jio is right. They ended the DS great but the time of it is over. Nintendo is focusing on the 3DS now.

About the titles coming this year for the DS, two have already been released, One I've never heard of, another is just a rumor, and the other one is for the 3DS not the DS. If any games do come out for the DS after the 3DS launch its normal. Like how after the PS3 was released they continued to make cheap shovelware games for the PS2. The 3DS is Nintendo's next focas as they abandon the DS. Even Gamefreak stated that they stopped working on the DS and are now making a Pokemon for the 3DS. Let me guess, you recently bought a DS and are mad because the 3DS was announced? Just a theory

dedicatedtogamers4791d ago

No, I've happily owned a DS for the past 3 years.

Let me guess, you recently bought a 3DS and are mad at the lack of games? Just a theory.

eagle214791d ago

You are acting as if back in 2004, people were saying the DS would sell 150 million. Pu-leeeeeze..lol. Quite the contrary! Many wanted the name to stay Game Boy and articles were doom and gloom. I didn't care for others opinions and bought the DS at launch and never looked back. Early adopters deserve more credit, we are the real game fans. Everyone else just sits and waits on success. Pessimists vs. Optimists all over again.

3DS all the way!

Chazmers4791d ago

@Jio that is true, I'm sure Nintendo will slowly faze out development for the DS but with so many casual gamers using the DS at the moment I think they won't completely abandon it straight away.

That is unless they bring out a new Brain Training or big casual title like that for the 3DS.

TheRacingX4791d ago

I picked up the 3DS at launch, and because TrU had the buy 1 get 1 50% off, I picked up SF4, RR3D, Steel Diver and Pilotwings. Ridge Racer does impress in 3D, yeah its pretty much a greatest hits with all the tracks from every RR but it's still fun and looks good. Steel Diver also impressed, the 3D depth underwater and variety keeps you playing, SF is SF for sure, I had high hopes for Pilotwings but must say I'm a bit disappointed and I REALLY loved the N64 game. Anybody have an opinion on Ghost Recon? I was looking at it, but it didn't look visually impressive and looks like turn based strategy...

pepsilover_20074791d ago (Edited 4791d ago )

I've read round a bit its shockingly been doing better reviews than i ever though just by look at the screenshots, and yes it is turn based strategy.

rezzah4791d ago

No one needs a 3DS.

Same thing with a NGP, 360, PS3, and PC.

They are not needed for basic survival. Just make life more fun and easier (PC) on us.

How Many More Victims, Like Garry's Mod, Will Nintendo's Hurtful Crusade Create?

Hanzala from eXputer: "As Nintendo takes out 20 years' worth of stuff from Garry's Mod, I watch in shock, thinking why it continues to hurt and discourage its fans."

RiseNShine10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

The irony that some of the most disgusting business practices come from companies like Disney or Nintendo, i can't even begin to understand what terrible damage was Garrys Mod making to Nintendo bottom line, imho they're getting pretty nervous about where they're heading in the future, handhelds are no longer something exclusive to Nintendo, from Steam Deck to many others, now you can play the latest games and pay a fraction of the price on Steam sales, so it's up to their exclusives, which just on their own would make hard to justify purchasing a closed overpriced hardware with outrageous price policies (Super Mario Odyssey is still 60 euro 6 years later!), and as a home console they're always underperforming compared to Sony or Xbox.

gold_drake10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

i cam guarantee you, that their exclusives alone is what drives switch sales. they sell in the 10s of millions of copies.

nintendo created their franchises to be sort of nostalgia driven, exclusive only on nintendo.

people will always buy the pkmn games as they always bring in new younger fans amd is family friendly

mario kart, the same thing, mario games in general.

zelda games are system sellers. animal crossing for the casual gamers.

nintendo doesnt need third vame devs essentially. they made sure with the switch and the limitations that they looked more to pc ps and xbox.

its sad, but nintendo is more than fine with what they're doing. they positioned themselves to appeal to the more casual gamers.

but to your point, im not sure why they're doing this rly.

Inverno10d ago

Look at how they handled Nintendo games being streamed or uploaded on YouTube in the past. They killed Yuzu and Citra even when they had nothing to do with ToTK being leaked, not to mention it was basically unplayable on emulation the week it was leaked. Smash Bros tournament, that was fairly recent. They shut down their online services without any care for purchases made. I bought a switch after skipping their last 2 consoles and handhelds but I don't plan on buying anything Nintendo in the future. They take things to the extremes, they legitimately hate their fans. They're honestly right up there with the likes of Acti, EA, and Ubi, only difference is that they disguise themselves as being family friendly all the while being shady.

Nintendo's Massacre Of The 3DS And Wii U Is Finally Complete, Regrettably

Hanzala from eXputer: "The cruel hammer of Nintendo has fallen. Farewell, 3DS and Wii U, you surely brightened my life and many others; you won't be forgotten."
