In my years of classical music training, I once played under a conductor that said the following about a movie composer: “Yeah, the music is interesting, but there is a reason we don’t hear it in the concert hall.” This got me thinking: what is good music, and what does this imply for video game music? What exactly is the purpose of video game music? Some video game music is simply breathtaking, but is it missing something from the classical masterpieces of Mozart and Beethoven? Does it have the catchy tunes of pop, or the complex chord structure of rock and metal? Will it ever be recognized on any sort of level beyond just good music for a video game?
