How IGN Have Lost Their Way

IP Conflict says: "...over the last couple of years or so I feel IGN have lost their way and this article is my qualification of this statement. IGN used to be the source of gaming information tailoring its content specifically to gamers, it was detailed, varied and always kept on point."

their crisis 2 review was a joke

truthfully i have never played a game with glitchier graphics or dumb A.I this gen and lets not start on the story, yet the reviewer who clearly by his bio is a 360 nut gave it a glowing review, and i was duped...i thought it was sandbox?

CVG are another both these sites are desperate for hits

IGN are untrustworthy which is a shame they used to be my 'goto'

Vojkan4821d ago

Problem is in people like you. If you don't like them, then stop giving them hits. You b!tch, but you admit that you read their reviews. Make a choice!

disturbing_flame4821d ago

To criticize something you must be able to know what it is about. Like when you fight your opponent you must know his weak points.

IGN it's not a question of hit the problem, they will always have hits, it just a matter of mentality of people towards them.
When people will decide the dialogue of IGN is biased and is not appropriate in the way they want to be informed, it will change.
The problem is that the audience for the moment doesn't think their format of communication is inapropriate, they are fed with crap articles made by average journalists nothing is meant to go beneath this formula, there is no reflexion beyond that, all is centered around performances, frustration to maintain the war between fanboys. When people will start to think about their fanboy condition, i think they might see that all changes are possible and what the industry wanted to sell to them is useless, if they could put all their energy in other things they would be happier i presume, and IGN will be washed away from all the crap team they got now.

Vojkan4821d ago

Lord

reported.

If I am done with a site, after realizing that it is biased I don't visit it anymore. I don't need to come back like some insecure watch dog. If I go out in a bar, and I don't like it, I go else where. I don't return every single night to be "sure" that it sucks. How re...ed is that logic? Well that's what you are doing. I hope IGN continues to post irritating scores, why not when f..ls come back and give them hits. Sheep people.

malandra4821d ago (Edited 4821d ago )

I agree completely, a few years ago IGN was a very trusted source for reviews and articles, now it's a joke

I remember when they had the balls to the give the first Assassin's Creed 7.5, a game that had huge hype and incredible graphics for its time which made most sites fall for that and gave it scores that didn't deserve, that IGN score pissed a lot of people off but in the end they had to admit they were wrong and IGN was right

now with Crysis 2 they do the exact opposite

ultimate-remag4821d ago

this game is way over hyped.. enemies jus walking into each other terrible pop ins and jagged lookin graphics @ some parts... these reviewers need 2 be more honest..

LORD-PHOENIX4821d ago

agreed....biggest propaganda this gen along with haze is crysis 2....i walked past an enemy and he did NOTHING

the graphics some parts are good but its too inconsistent, the walls are sharp like blocks,no texture nothing.

reviewers need to start being honest crysis 2 on consoles id give a 6-7 very average the A.I has put me off trading it in for a credit note

theonlylolking4821d ago (Edited 4821d ago )

When they are honest they get fired like one of gamespot's employees.

Solid_Snake-4821d ago

should of bought the pc version then.

no problem with graphics on mine and the a.i are fine. prob because im playing it on the hardest setting.

Amphion4821d ago

I lost all respect for IGN when they gave Crysis 2 graphics on PS3 an 8.5 while the 360 version got a 9.5. Yes the 360 version is mildly better but it is so so mild that it didn't warrant the huge deal that IGN made of this.

They were close enough where both versions should have gotten a 9.5 in the graphics department.

Solid_Snake-4821d ago (Edited 4821d ago )

so if they gave the ps3 the 9.5 and the xbox 8.5 youd be ok with that.

why should a game thats better be rated the same.

your defo a fanboy.

Seraphemz4821d ago

360 - you didnt read that he thought they should get the same score? Who's the fanboy here?

jeseth4821d ago (Edited 4821d ago )

360.

The point is, the graphics are virtually the same on both. In some spots 360 looks better and in others PS3 looks better. Overall it looks like the same game.

This game is beyond overhyped. Many games have better story, character developement, and replayability, A.I., etc, yet Crysis 2 for some reason gets a pass. IGN looks bad on this one. While everyone else is in the range of 7-9, IGN goes and gives a review written by a self proclaimed 360 loyalist that makes fanboy flame comments during his review ....

IGN is becoming a bit of a joke.

Chaos Striker4821d ago (Edited 4821d ago )

Although the IGN reviewer's language might have been somewhat excessive, he really did not say anything that was inaccurate.

Firstly, the review score is pretty consistent with a lot of the other reviews out for the game. On GameRankings, it shows that GameInformer, GameTrailers, VideoGamer, 1UP, and others gave Crysis a 9.0. Moreover, the reviewer (Arthur), criticized both Killzone and Gears for their muted brown colors, which indicates that he was being consistent in his criticism.

Finally, his comments about the PS3 being sub-HD was verified by Digital Foundry's analysis. I disagree with his comment about the framerate, since Digital Foundry mentioned it was inconsistent on both platforms, but other than that Arthur covered everything that needs to be covered and pretty much presented an accurate portrayal for what someone will experience while playing the game.

most of the gamers from ign dont work there anymore

And you get these horrible and bias reviews that compare games to other games and not really looking at the game itself

demonddel4821d ago

they should have known better not to piss off the PlayStation extremists

joab7774821d ago

What a statement, PlayStation extremist. PlayStation gamers have put up w inferior versions of almost everything on a system that is more powerful and simply need a Creator that isn't lazy or forced to find the cheapest options. Cryteks goal on ps3 was to use whatever shortcuts or design techniques to make sure it looked as good as Xbox. I'm not happy w that anymore. Build it for PlayStation and put it out. Then u will see extremism, from die hard Xbox fans and PC fans. But they don't have this option because the majority of fps gamers are on Xbox, it would hurt the bottom line. So, extremism? Are u kidding me? And for ur information, i own both, and play both and like them for different reasons. But, i want the best each can offer, not an industry wide status quo, because ps3 gamers are know for simply accepting and paying for garbage.

Odion4821d ago

IGN has always been great peoples opinion just sway based on how much they dislike the current trend at the site.

Everyone hated Gamespot a few years back and now its iGN

Godmars2904821d ago

But does anyone listen to Gamespot reviews since Gerstmann was fired? IGN has been shuffling people just to shuffle people and save money becoming less reliable in the process.

Its not about hating them, its about trusting what they have to say about games they're advertising.

Rage_S904821d ago

Yh that firing was bullsh*t proves that these conspiracies may have some basis after all.....

Oner4821d ago

It's really not "conspiracy" if the truth is verifiable for all to see and confirm for themselves...that is, if those that are inquiring about the clear inconsistencies are mature and understanding enough to look at things objectively & without a closed mind (i.e. fanboys)

Rage_S904821d ago

I know what you mean some people just hate sites because they don't review their favourite games well. But what people have to understand is it's all just opinion.

In saying that i do feel IGN have gone down hill, this was especially true when they made the article about Mass Effect 3's new features, which turned out to have no new information.

Odion4821d ago

YA but regardless there aren't many good gaming sites to begin with. IGN still is the best overall.

It boggles the mind when these little sites call foul on the big ones for pandering questionable content when they themselves only ever produce said content.

CrazedJackPotty4821d ago

loads of sites are better than IGN.

1UP, IncGamers, Eurogamer etc.

The problem is that everything reads as though it's aimed at a six year old.

IGN Entertainment acquires Eurogamer, GI, VG247, Rock Paper Shotgun and more

IGN Entertainment has acquired the Gamer Network family of digital brands for an undisclosed sum. As a result of the acquisition, some redundancies have been made across the UK-based organisation.

Well this can only mean one thing... more job layoffs even in the publication industry.

Jin_Sakai15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

“Layoffs occuring“

Yep. IGN now has a monopoly in the gaming media.

“As a result of the acquisition, some redundancies have been made across the UK-based organisation.”

“Gamer Network's publications are GamesIndustry.biz, Eurogamer (including six local language editions), Rock Paper Shotgun, VG247 and Dicebreaker. The business also holds shares in Outside Xbox, Digital Foundry and Hookshot (which operates Nintendolife, PushSquare, PureXbox and Time Extension).”

“IGN Entertainment is the division of Ziff Davis that includes IGN, MapGenie, HowLongToBeat, and Humble Bundle. It has acquired the websites from PAX and New York Comic-Con organiser ReedPop, which initially bought the Gamer Network business in 2018.“

Jingsing15d ago

When say IGN you mean Microsoft's chief propagandist.

VenomUK15d ago

Surprising news, also a little sad as the magazine era is over and the website era is slowly coming to an end. But it must be said that many of the bastards who work at these places have operated as a mafia to control opinion on not only what can be said about games, but who can be allowed to talk about them, and what can be allowed to feature in them or not. As said above, redundancies are coming, Eurogamer pays the highest salaries for a team of staff who for some their output is minimal. Eurogamer also campaigned against Hogwarts Legacy and refused to review it -, the site took a hit. PAX has probably thought to cut its losses. Some job layoffs? I know of some of these people and they took pride in excluding - I will shed no tears.

S2Killinit15d ago

This is good news for Microsoft. IGN is like their advertisement arm.

Abear2114d ago

This is exactly what Microsoft needs to better their image, control over the narrative by having the same message come from different colors umbrellas that are all really made by the same company.

All this means is a collective hive mind when reporting the news

They’ll discuss with each other how to handle topics and what kind of headlines to go with so they can fire round after round of whatever point they want to make

And the sad thing is over the many years even to the old GameGate days they love making gamers look bad as a collective. Anything for a hit piece.

victorMaje15d ago

Narrative control. I don’t like this at all.
Independent reviewers will be more important than ever.

JEECE15d ago

"They’ll discuss with each other how to handle topics and what kind of headlines to go with so they can fire round after round of whatever point they want to make."

You say this like it will be a new thing that they didn't already do.

OtterX15d ago

Yea, I had actually just seen today on Linkedin that a GamesIndustry.biz guy was talking about being laid off. I didn't read all of his post, but I bet it's because of this. That's a shame to hear. :\

Probably Microsoft's fault!
They surely gave IGN the idea.
What's next IGN Pass?

But joke aside let's hope that this makes the news better compared to some of IGN branches

Jingsing15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

Microsoft and IGN work quite closely so it isn't a stretch to say this is a move to control the gaming press to get everyone singing from the Microsoft hymn sheet. Not a good look at all. It is transparent stuff like this which is backfiring in Microsoft's face. First they want control of all the games now the media.

crazyCoconuts15d ago

While there's obviously a desire to preserve add revenue and early access to review copies, I doubt there's the level of conspiracy here that you imply. I mean there's no direct link between MS and IGN right?

Petebloodyonion15d ago

You're probably right!!!!
Here's MS evil plan
1) Make sure that Hellblade 2 receives inflated reviews.
2) Fire all the ppl across UK who gave Starfield the justified 6/10 reviews
3) Make sure that Game industry.biz stops giving Sony's president a tribute to spew their lies and have them talk to Sarah Bonds and Todd Howard only.
4) Control the majority of players for the GOTY award so MS wins from now on.

PPL needs to know about this!

Jingsing15d ago

@crazyCoconuts The world has moved on from "direct links" as companies were easily caught doing that. These days corporations can merely operate as a cartel through shared mutual interest which is not strictly kosher either but is also more difficult to prove. It's the fundamental flaw with big corporations in the US economy today and no one in power is addressing it.

Lightning7715d ago

Is there proof to anything you're saying?

I've never heard of anything like this or is this N4G once again make believing stuff outta thin air again?

crazyCoconuts15d ago

@jing if you have proof then I stand corrected.
Otherwise it seems like more conspiratorial thinking to explain what could otherwise be explained by natural forces of market economies.
Don't get me wrong, I believe there is bias all over and unsavory influences. I just don't think it's all centrally planned by evil villains in a smoke-filled room

S2Killinit15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

I don't think anyone has proof but my personal experience corroborates what he is saying about IGN being in MS’s corner for whatever reason.

Granted, Last time I visited IGN regularly was years ago, I literally stopped once I realized the huge bias they showed in favor of xbox. Their pages for the two consoles were fundamentally different. When they would invite xbox president he was treated completely different than when Shuhei Yoshida was invited. The xbox pres was treated as one of their own. There was just too many examples, it wasn’t even much of a secret.

Jingsing14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

@Lighting77 The proof is in the pudding, "Partnerships for Events: Microsoft and IGN partner for specific events or showcases." "Sponsored Segments: Microsoft has sponsored segments within IGN's showcases." "Industry Relationships: Microsoft and IGN, as major players in the gaming industry, simply have good working relationships. This leads to collaborations on shows & joint announcements without any ownership involved." They just had an event together recently. The crux of it is money is being exchanged for favors, when that happens editorial independence goes out the window.

There was controversy about Microsoft having involvement with Polygon in the past and it proved to be real and effected their editorial bias. "Investment in Web3 Startup: Microsoft's venture capital arm, M12, participated in a $20 million funding round for Space and Time, a Web3 data warehousing platform, alongside Polygon (amongst other investors) "

I mean news did come out the same day hellblade did.

Jk

Petebloodyonion14d ago

The embargo was to make sure IGN had time to finalize the deal and make sure Eurogamer gave this game a 5 stars instead of a 3.

Man, how devious and low can Microsoft go just to promote Gamepass
I heard that it costs a ton of money to MS and they will raise the price of Gamepass by a lot of money just to compensate
true story

Christopher15d ago

Oh boy! If we've learned one thing about recent news, corporate shrinkage of an industry via buyouts from those at top only leads to good things for employees and consumers!

Aloymetal15d ago

100%!!
IGN and Eurogamer...A match made in heaven!!

thesoftware73015d ago

Aloy!
Yes, good credible websites, I agree, it is a good match.

IGN is one of the most trusted gaming sites, weather you like it or not, but I know because they don't fit the N4G goofiness bubble, they can't be good.

shinoff218315d ago

I left ign years ago. Used to be on the ign forums all the time. I left there and found here. Not sure if you remember but this place used to be pretty bad for Sony fans. 360 was king for a few years. Anyone I don't quite remember but ign changed. Whatever the fk it was it seemed for the worse.

VenomUK15d ago

You’re right Christopher, just look at how N4G has improved since the buyout. .

Huey_My_D_Long14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

I think the consolidation is an issue. the whole conspiracy angle n4g guys are playing at by saying MS gave IGN money for this is annoying, but overall the Consolidation is not a good move.

Christopher14d ago

I'm not on the bribing for reviews thing. Scores themselves should be ignored entirely as far as I'm concerned. But, consolidation is not helping anyone but to solidify IGN even more than ever before. Less competition at the top.

Lexreborn215d ago

Ummmm not sure that’s a good thing that all these review sites are under the same umbrella. There’s no guarantee that they will maintain a non-bias opinion not paid for by the highest bidder.

MrNinosan15d ago

They haven't been non-bias since GamePass was crowned "best service in gaming".

Amplitude15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

You can go much farther back than that. Never forget the Kane and Lynch 2 review drama

Edit: wait that was GameSpot. Still though - don't trust these websites for anything. Find YouTubers like who's opinions you agree with and watch them instead. GaminylGames, Minimme, Digital Foundry, GMan, whatever. All better than these ad-filled "reviews" from people who are forced to play games and score with an arbitrary number

MrNinosan15d ago

@Amplitude
Digital Foundry has lost my trust ever since they got that MS money, but other than that, I'm with you.

If I'm on the fence of a game, I wait till the reviewers that share my taste has given their opinion.

Cockney14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

@MrNinosan
I didn't blame Microsoft for inviting digital foundry to expressly launch their new hardware, I mean good move by them getting a non bias technology focused influencer to gush about the series x, my issue is they took them up on their offer, taking a blatant sweetener like that really irks me, ever since I view their content with a pinch of salt

Charal15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

Ouch, that does not sounds good for Eurogamer.
With so much of the industry media that will more or less follow the same editorial line, it will be harder and harder to distinguish PR from actual journalism in a couple of years.

Thinking about it, may it explain their review score for Hellblade 2?

Christopher15d ago

***harder and harder to distinguish PR from actual journalism in a couple of years. ***

The age of gaming advertorials.

Petebloodyonion15d ago

You're right all of this is just to promote Hellblade 2 and inflate the score.
Also the why cuts are indeed coming to Eurogamer and other UK branches because they only gave Starfield an average score.

Jingsing15d ago

Shed the non US assets that are not favorable to Xbox keep the US assets that are. Microsoft are going to deliver crap and they are going to tell you their crap is good and you are going to buy it. That seems to be the strategy. At this point I just want them out of gaming as they are operating like cancer.

VenomUK15d ago

YouTubers ursurped the games media years ago.

victorMaje15d ago

Exactly right. No more journalists. Just 1 take regurgitated & paraphrased down the chain. Smh.

Abear2114d ago

Their marketing budget is nonexistent. Instead they will publish articles for you to click on this site to get information (biased propaganda) about their games and ad dollars from you here and on their website too.

This is the new marketing strategy
