Top 5 RPGs from the Land of the Rising Sun

GameDynamo - "Japanese game developers have left an indelible mark on our culture in a variety of ways, and this article is a tribute to one of my favorite genre’s, the Japanese role-playing games (JRPGs). These games have inspired us, taken us on adventures to strange exotic worlds, and introduced us to a range of characters that we’ve come to cherish (and sometimes dislike). Some of the characteristics of a JRPG include a silent protagonist, great music, fun combat, and above all, compelling stories. Here’s a list of what I considered to be the top five JRPGs and the reasons why - with plenty of spoilers!"

You can already tell this article was written by some old gamer. Seriously list some modern RPGS.

hay4788d ago

You can't get better jRPGs than some oldies.

Dart894788d ago

War How old are you 16??
And yea like hay said old school rpgs are the best the only rpg i have liked this generation was demons soul other than that rpgs aren't what they use to be.

its a troll account obviously.

Stealth20k4788d ago (Edited 4788d ago )

you want modern ones

disgaea 4, valkyria , lost oddessy, tales games, 100's of handheld games ect ect

Cheeseknight284788d ago

I love Valkyria Chronicles, Demon Souls, Lost Odyssey and the like... but they can't touch Chrono Trigger. The only JRPG in recent memory I would hail as a "classic" is Persona 4.

VenomProject4788d ago

Is Chrono Trigger really THAT good?...

Everyone who knows anything about RPGs swears by it. I've yet to play it. Might get it on the DS.

Capt-FuzzyPants4787d ago

Play it. It really is good. The only thing i did not like was Crono didnt talk but that doesnt affect too much.

hay4785d ago

Actually I think it's better than that.

bozebo4788d ago

elitist article :P

Top 5 is a bit hard to juggle to be honest. Those 5 certainly deserve to be in a top list, but they aren't necessarily better than more recent jrpgs.

Who played those 5 games then played ff7 and said something like "omg theyve totally made the game nooby and casual now".

If it was a top 10 most of those 5 would be in it, along with some from the zelda series and more FF games.

As for jrpgs on the current gen, lost odyssey is the only one I like... also known as the true ff13 :P

bozebo4788d ago (Edited 4788d ago )

debatable, maby it's an action-adventure-rpg, depends which one from the series perhaps.

but I suppose, it isnt a true jrpg in the sense that the others listed are.

rambler4788d ago

Not debatable. The game spawned from the original text/parser adventure games. It has the same concepts except has action added to it. Anyone who says it is anything other than an Action-Adventure has no idea what they are talking about.

baodeus4788d ago (Edited 4788d ago )

i think someone missing LandStalker from Sega. It is on the same caliber of crono trigger (each with very innovative game play and story) for me. That and also zelda (ocarina of time). Some nes ones are great too (dragon warrior).

Final Fantasy IV Pixel Remaster Review – An Epic Tale Of Pixelated Portrayals

Gary Green said: We’re finding ourselves in a similar position with the Pixel Remaster edition of Final Fantasy IV as we were with Final Fantasy III since, once again, we’ve received a slightly upscaled, more vibrant port of the original game when there’s already an expanded 3D remake available. As such, we’re playing a game which, even after its long-awaited release, still lives very much in the shadow of its remake.

If only they didn't screw ps4 owners over with a physical release. I'd have ran through this in a heartbeat.

The first one I played, it was the one that made me fall in love with JRPGs and is still my favorite to this day. A masterpiece

It's already been said that they weren't motivated to do anything with the series unless the gang was back together, not really for any legal reasons.

I'm honestly happy with the Steam port of the game.
