Sony admits early PS3 adopters may feel cheated

"It's natural to feel that way, of course it is" - Maguire

As Sony ships its new model PlayStation 3 to stores for launch this Wednesday, UK managing director Ray Maguire has told GamesIndustry.biz that the new sku is a natural evolution and the company always had plans to offer a cheaper product.

But he also admitted that he could understand that PlayStation 3 early adopters might feel cheated for buying the console earlier in the year when it commanded a luxury GBP 425 price point.

"I think it's natural to feel that way, of course it is," said Maguire, in an exclusive interview published today.

...nope. I been PLAYING B3YOND all year long plus watching TRUE HD BLU-RAY movies!, while lame assholes be like ..."oh! Booray vs. HD-DVD!"

K, Xbots.. how you girls feelin bout ur early purchase ;)

Mr Marbles6071d ago

cheated? PS3 users never feel cheated no matter what, it doesn't matter what Sony does to them, they will make excuses for Sony, they are true fanboys to the core, when is the last time any of you fanboys have said anything negative about Sony? According to you guys Sony and the PS3 is perfect, they can do no wrong. So go ahead Sony, drop the price again next month, no one will fault you for it, your followers are blindly devoted. Hell go ahead and drop bluray next month, these zombies will just say they never liked watching movies anyway.

1st) Average gamers dont buy a $599 entertainment machine (hub, the PS3).
2nd) Price drops... more ppl pick up the machine and more gamez coz publishers luv dat kash.
3rd) Suckers at Microsoft, didnt drop the 360's price like for years. What happened? Got their ass raped by Wii. 360 been at 11 million something for some time now :( The Red "Xbot 360" Ringer will be missed by... a few.

Price drops = a good thing. Ok, class dismissed.

so let me get this str8, 100 extra for BC is OK, but 100 dollars extra for WiFi is not OK? By making this new sku, sony is saying that the M$ method of offering the consumer a choice is the better method. By you people saying that making folks pay extra for BC is ok, you are also saying that it is ok when M$ makes folks pay extra for certain features, or is it only OK when Sony does it and only bad when M$ does it? Marbles is right, you guys have a double standard, and no matter what Sony does, even if it is the same stuff you bashed MS for doing, it is OK when sony does it, they can do no wrong, you guys are truly sad, and you need help. No one should be so committed to a toy.

Omegasyde6071d ago

399.99 for a SKU. Hmm.
Its a blu ray player,

and it has a hard drive.

and you can install linux so basically it can run a operating system

and 8 people can play on it

and free online play

and wifi that can also act as a media center.

PEOPLE feeling cheated? That's a joke right?

You %@#%@%@#%#@@^@^@^@^@ get what you pay for, if you cry about 400 and not being able to play ps2 games guess what....Ps2 are pretty cheap nowadays.
*Let alone the ps2 is dropping to $99 VERY VERY VERY Soon.*

So I can save $100 or I can play Ps2 games? Tough decision.
But hey the "experts" above me, say stupid move. That if you agree with the the price cut, that you are a "Sony sheep".

Despite the number 1 reason a lot of people aren't buying the ps3 in the first place is the price.

But to the people with the post above me... "its a stupid move"
Wow. Sheer brilliance that has brought a new level to fanboyism.

Don't quit your day job you two, the industry already has enough analyst.

PS3's a fine machine. I skipped the PS2 and PS1 generation of gaming, so I'm glad that my PS3 came with it. I might've bought a PS1 for $199 and a PS2 for $299 or whatever their costs were back then. But now, I get them for practially free, in addition to getting free internet access, free DVD and bluray playback that has a home theater quality, and a free xbox360 (yes, PS3 multiplatforms and ports and the PC versions of Halo and gears and bioshock that I won't buy for my pc make the PS3 a custom built xbox360).

If I didn't feel that $499 and $599 was a good value, I woudln't have bought it. It doesn't matter if the price has dropped because I feel that the machine should've costed $6000. But mainly, I view the the additional cost of $100 for being an early adopter as the price I was willing to pay to enjoy it sooner.

It would be an issue if the machines were breaking down, but they're built like a rock. And, in my opinion, I think the early machines are always a higher quality than the later machines. Why? The factory equipments THAT ARE BUILDING the PS3's get older over time and wear out until they get replaced. My PS3 was a launch window PS3. It's one of the brank new ones made by the brand new factories.

xbox360 is too expensive.

nasim6071d ago

The BLU RAY player alone in the ps3 costs 500$

It can play 100 gig BLU RAY discs.

the x360 owners are being cheated..no wifi..no HDMI 1.3 support ...no next gen player...50$ for 2d text achievements. I am very happy with my ps3.

as for the price drop i am happier that lot of people would now be buying the ps3

MikeGdaGod6071d ago (Edited 6071d ago )

ummmm.........NO!

i wanted a HD player, got one
i wanted a "true" next-gen console, got one
i wanted a fully functional media hub, got one
i wanted a reliable system that i didn't have to worry about setting my house on fire, got one

i was happy to pay that $600, not because i love sony, but because i got everything i wanted for $600. i'm glad they lower the price because everyone's not fortunate enough to spend that kind of money, like i can.

why is this even an issue???

EDIT:
@ dangerstepp........

why no games? this is something that makes me doubt you and everyone else that says this, even have a ps3. how are there no games?

you had to know what was avaliable at the time of your purchase so why buy it if there was nothing you wanted at the time? that makes no sense.

let me list a few that i own that you can't get anywhere else:

Resistance
Motorstorm
HS
Ninja Gaiden Sigma
Tekken: DR
SuperStar Dust HD

i have more but those are my top six exclusives. if you have a ps3, you should have, at least, these six. every genre is mostly covered, and they're all great games.

this no games line is getting lammer everyday.

EDIT Pt. 2:

OMG!!!!!!!!

HOW COULD I FORGET............WARHAWK!!!!! !!

that games alone is worth a PS3

dangerstepp6071d ago

I own both platforms and highly favor my 360 over my PS3.

No games = no play. It's as simple as that equation.
I do feel cheated and don't even get me started on rumble functionality.

Jandre026071d ago

Sony's only mistakes were the price, the shortages initially, and (even though i dont are) excluding rumble.

They were forced to release because of MSFT. They have spent this year fixing the issues, but as far as games, YOU DONT GET MANY GOOD ONES IN THE FIRST FEW MONTHS!

Especially on brand new technology. It just doesnt happen. So saying you feel cheated is stupid. If you expected the PS3 to release and be full stride and full power on release day then you are just ignorant.

They did have some good games, includin Motorstorm, Fight Night, Resistance which I enjoyed. Then came Oblivion(which was better on the PS3.)Games have to be created for better games to come out. Popular games were ported, so its really is the developers fault, however maybe Sony could have made a better effort to help along the way.

To say you feel "cheated" is just stupid IMO. You know that prices will drop eventually, maybe not this soon, but eventually. AAA titles rarely come out in the first few months though. Maybe if your going to spend $500-600 you should do some research first instead of complaining. Me, im happy enough with the PS3, its media features, the few good games, Blu-Ray, and the way the lineup is taking shape.

All this negative press is coming because were in the "blogging" age. Ignorant nit-wits come on and complain that "the 360 has a higher install base" and "that the PS3 doesnt have many games". Well...duh. What do you expect? Games take time to make. Many months, even years. I knew it when i bought my PS3. Those of you who didnt, sucks for you.

sabbath4206071d ago

All you have been doing with the ps3 is PLAYING B3HIND! and watching a format that has only 1 thing over hddvd and that is capacity. you don't have the strong features of hddvd like pip and web enabled material. I know I know you don't need that stuff anyway. So what games does the ps3 have that are beyond? Lair? B3YOND playable maybe.

Texas GMR6071d ago

... they will eventually all go down in price. You always pay more when something is new to market.

I've never owned a Sony system so the backwards comp. means nothing to me. Little more off and I'll seriously look at getting one.

You do get a lot for $400 though.

secret6071d ago

The dividing line has been drawn. Everything to the left of that line is the xbox360 and xbox360 multiports. Everything to the right of that line is the PS3 and the loyal PS3 developers like Insomniac games.

The following link is a Grand Turismo5 versus Real-life comparison quiz. Let's see how you do. Take the quiz and see the power of the PS3 rather than the smoke & mirrors of the xbox360. PS3 fans, you might want to try for yourself...enjoy the true next gen experience on the utlimate home theater console -- the PS3.

Unless you got all 14 answers on this quiz correct on the first try with 100% certainty, with absolutely no doubt at all while you were taking the exam, I don't think you should click disagree. Clicking disagree without passing this test in flying colors shows (to yourself) that you're untrustworthy, pigheaded, and easily amazed by microsoft's smoke and mirrors. You know who you are.(If Microsoft really loves you, then why does it continue to sell you a product that it KNOWS is still defective rather than HALTING production until the flaws are worked out?).

Thank you. Now take the quiz.

Uh, yeah, because 1)Wifi Is really easy to install, and BC chips aren't as easy, and 2)Because there is no other model with Wifi for 360 built in. Also, you are paying for more GBs as well, and in the case of the 80GB, a game, and in the case of the 60GB in Europe, two games.

as a gamer i find it humbling that i can still play my ps2 and ps1 games on this next gen console. In two years i have a feeling they might phase out the bc consoles all together because of more ps3 game variety. How many then can say they have a bc console? Also i prob would have missed out on the classics that are resistance and motor storm if i had got my ps3 this xmas. I always tend to get the latest games that are out! ;)

MADGameR6071d ago (Edited 6071d ago )

SONY never cheated me. Microsoft did try to charge $300 of X Box Live service for a year when really the whole time I was using the 1 Year Free X Box Live subscription. I felt cheated there! Microsoft will not give us gamers some love unless their competition either offers something better, or has an open opportunity to impress us while their competition is in the process of presenting new things for their console. I'd rather play the X Box 360 at my friend's house. As for PS3, everything is good except the crappy download speed. What if all 3 consoles were to have the same price? PS3 would definately sell the most. For a console that was twice the price of the 360, it sold pretty damn good. For it to even have sold over 5M in less than a year is impressive to me. Besides, SONY has not even touched their franchises yet. Only new IPs have been out. Microsoft on the other hand, has brung out their cards, Gears and Halo 3. They thought that Halo 3 would boosts X Box 360's sales by a huge amount but, it did'nt do anything basically. Soon Microsoft will be forced to drop the price. IF they keep coming with just better deals then they are just ignorant.

Kotaku6071d ago

The system is great in general. I been real lucky with all my consoles, I own a launch 360,wii and the ps3(60gb) and all of them get the same amount of love.

so I dont know how this 40gb will turn out to be. ill wait a week after launch to judge this one

Rattles6071d ago

as they dont add stuff that will stop me playing the same game i dont care. i got to experince resistance and motorstorm so im happy cant wait for the real games to role in and at least we got every thing in one package and dont have to go out and buy wat should of been ther in the beging. "elite cough cough"

HeartlesskizZ6071d ago

maybe this one is more worthy then the 80gb or maybe not.
anyhow I already own 60gb one =)

Wolfenstein: The New Order Is The Last Of Its Kind

Wolfenstein: The New Order turns ten years old today, so we decided to play it again and discovered just how much of an extinct kind of game it is.

It's an outstanding game and so was The Old Blood. Also a lost era of gaming. Interesting, I received a physical copy of The Old Blood 9 years ago today from Poland. It was digital only in North America initially upon release so I had to import.

Wolfenstein: The New Order - A Highly Rated FPS That Hasn't Stood the Test of Time

Wolfenstein: The New Order launched 10 years ago today, but can it stand up to the modern FPS titles it inspired?

Seth_hun8h ago

I disagree. Its still a fantastic game, with very good gunplay and a surprisingly loveable cast of characters and a good story trough many different and interesting setpieces

hiawa235h ago(Edited 5h ago)

All The New Order needs for my tastes is a this gen enhancement patch.

ChasterMies4h ago

I played New Order a couple of years after launch and I give it an 8/10. The shooter holds up because it is focused on being a good shooter. There is no crafting, no RPG elements, no open world find the question mark Weapons are fun. Enemies are fun. Levels offer a nice mix of stealth and shooting. You get to be the predator; this isn’t a game about fending off waves of enemies while a robot companion unlocks a door. Most importantly, New Order is the last of a dying breed of single player shooters.

Skuletor3h ago

Singleplayer shooters are still getting released every year, just look up "boomer shooters" and you'll find an an abundance of them. AAA fps campaigns, not so much.

Last year had Trepang2, RoboCop: Rogue City, Turbo Overkill, Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun, Dread Templar, Sprawl and more

Abear214h ago

Weird all the Wolfenstein articles.

Can you guess what will be announced at Xbox showcase?

DefenderOfDoom23h ago

What Machine Games did with Wolfenstein franchise is awesome. The game play definitely to me , is still very fun to play !!!
