Sony admits early PS3 adopters may feel cheated

As Sony ships its new model PlayStation 3 to stores for launch this Wednesday, UK managing director Ray Maguire has told GamesIndustry.biz that the new sku is a natural evolution and the company always had plans to offer a cheaper product.

But he also admitted that he could understand that PlayStation 3 early adopters might feel cheated for buying the console earlier in the year when it commanded a luxury GBP 425 price point.

"I think it's natural to feel that way, of course it is," said Maguire, in an exclusive interview published today.

PS3's a fine machine. I skipped the PS2 and PS1 generation of gaming, so I'm glad that my PS3 came with it. I might've bought a PS1 for $199 and a PS2 for $299 or whatever their costs were back then. But now, I get them for practially free, in addition to getting free internet access, free DVD and bluray playback that has a home theater quality, and a free xbox360 (yes, PS3 multiplatforms and ports and the PC versions of Halo and gears and bioshock that I won't buy for my pc make the PS3 a custom built xbox360).

If I didn't feel that $499 and $599 was a good value, I woudln't have bought it. It doesn't matter if the price has dropped because I feel that the machine should've costed $6000. But mainly, I view the the additional cost of $100 for being an early adopter as the price I was willing to pay to enjoy it sooner.

It would be an issue if the machines were breaking down, but they're built like a rock. And, in my opinion, I think the early machines are always a higher quality than the later machines. Why? The factory equipments THAT ARE BUILDING the PS3's get older over time and wear out until they get replaced. My PS3 was a launch window PS3. It's one of the brank new ones made by the brand new factories.

you had to know what was avaliable at the time of your purchase so why buy it if there was nothing you wanted at the time? that makes no sense.

i have more but those are my top six exclusives. if you have a ps3, you should have, at least, these six. every genre is mostly covered, and they're all great games.

Sony's only mistakes were the price, the shortages initially, and (even though i dont are) excluding rumble.

They were forced to release because of MSFT. They have spent this year fixing the issues, but as far as games, YOU DONT GET MANY GOOD ONES IN THE FIRST FEW MONTHS!

Uh, yeah, because 1)Wifi Is really easy to install, and BC chips aren't as easy, and 2)Because there is no other model with Wifi for 360 built in. Also, you are paying for more GBs as well, and in the case of the 80GB, a game, and in the case of the 60GB in Europe, two games.

SONY never cheated me. Microsoft did try to charge $300 of X Box Live service for a year when really the whole time I was using the 1 Year Free X Box Live subscription. I felt cheated there! Microsoft will not give us gamers some love unless their competition either offers something better, or has an open opportunity to impress us while their competition is in the process of presenting new things for their console. I'd rather play the X Box 360 at my friend's house. As for PS3, everything is good except the crappy download speed. What if all 3 consoles were to have the same price? Im so happy playing my god of war 1 and 2, bully, finaly fantasy and other ps2 games, watching my blu ray movies, playing my blu-ray games, streaming movies and tv shows and music from my computer, having an upgraded hard drive, remotely watching tv shows on my ps3 that are streaming from my computer on the train, damn its good. My xbox 360 just sits there.....only being played for bioshock and gears. And, online for 360? nar i don't like paying for extras.

Duuuude, thats exactly how I feel. LOL... I use my PS3 a lot and go online all the time. I want xBox Live, but damn, I do not want to pay extra for that. What happens the second, third and fourth year? $200 for something I have free on the PS3... Thats why if its a multiplat game I want and it has online... I get for the PS3 since free online play.

But yea man, exactly how I feel about my purchase. I bought a 2nd pad for my console when I bought Marvel Ultimate Alliance. I started looking on Ebay for a couple more but refuse to buy those ugly looking cheaper models no matter how cheap they are. At that time, the rumours of rumble were coming out so I held back (and I'm glad I did) I suppose I would have been slightly upset if I had gone out and bought 3 standard Sixaxis pads.

I will be buying 2 more pads still but will wait until the rumble are available (hopefully the JPN pads will work on the UK consoles.) I gotta admit that I haven't really missed the rumble feature at all but that's not saying I think Rumble is crap. It'll be nice to see how MGS4 implements it to say the least!

It is really hard to find the original users who bought the system in the first place.

If sony tried to send free movies, a lot of people would get gyped if they had bought their ps3 used or with cash since it would be hard for Sony to find the original owners. Sony however rewards PSP users who registered and send out free demo's UMD's. Granted, its not better than a dvd/blu0ray but it is the thought that counts.

I didn't get the launch machine, I got the started pack which had two games and two controllers. I think I got the best deal. I wouldn't be happy with the new machine, especially if I need to start adding USB hubs etc. It annoys me that the 360 has that daft breeze block of a power pack and the silly clip on aerial and in order to watch HD DVD movies I need to attach another ugly box pretending to be a book, and yet another power supply.

I didn't feel cheated either even after XB1 dropped $250 a mere 3 months after its Aussie launch because it was apparent even then it was losing.

I DID however feel cheated when the Elite came out because it added extra functionality to the machine that many had been asking for all along and had been told NO its not needed and its not coming. I bought my machine 3 months after the UK release off Ebay for £320. I don't feel cheated in the slightest about the new version/s coming out. I've spent DAYS on Ninja Gaiden Sigma playing through all difficulties, mission mode and the DLC. Enchanted arms got a good 100 hours play time from me. Resistance has kept both me and my girlfriend busy for many an hour. We've got more than our moneys worth out of Heavenly sword (The cashier missed the final 9 off the price when ringing it up so I got it for £3.99) Darkness, Ridge Racer, Tekken, Virtua Fighter, Marvel Ultimate Alliance. Folklore out this weekend will net a good few hours so no, I really don't feel cheated.

Oh, and I hear this machine is also a Blu Ray player.

If I got any other PS3 sku I would have upgraded the HDD anyay. So all along I only payed $500 PS3 and I don't feel cheated at all. Tell me another system that will give me the same experience for $500. I get online gaming, watch blu-ray and upscaled DVDs from netflix, and HD gaming. And the PS3 hasn't even took off. There is potential in the system and the PS3 is also built like a tank to last that long, so I can never get cheated. PS3 is viable option right now. It's just the 360 and PS3 owners who complain because the multiplatform games get release earlier and usually marginally better, but if you're a PS3 owner you don't care because there are games out already and how many games can you really play. I own PS3 only and I plan on buying 4 games this month for the system and I have never bought probably more than two games before with any previous system. There are games, so don't pay attention to the 1% of people who own both PS3 and 360.

I invested in the 60GB unit and I don't need the newer models that depend on software emulation for playing PS1/PS2 games.

Let's be real here, the 40GB PS3 will be Backwards compatible in the near future but they won't release the software for it until they fully phase out the 60GB unit. It's all business.

Whoever thinks that releasing a PS3 without an HDD needs to buy a brain. If a new model that does not include an HDD is sold then all games will have to be developed for the lowest common denominator. That means all games will be developed at the lowest specs which means worse games. That is why as we move forward all the xbox360 core users will get screwed over because games will require an HDD.

Also why do people complain about the consumer getting confused by all the choices. THINK for one second. A very small minority of the population keeps track of gaming news. What the common consumer will do is go into a Best Buy and ask what are the options available and they will say we have A and B. The consumer will make their choice and THATS IT. They will not wonder about future skus or what they are missing.

Also if you are complaining about BC then you are in the minority. Most of the population does not care about BC just the hardcore gamers who want to play FF7 for the 700th time. I bet you are thinking well what about the consumer who had a ps2 and wants to play all their backlogged games...People do not buy a next gen system to play ps2 games primarily. They buy one to play ps3 games. It is not a make or break decision.

Finally Sony is a company who makes decisions based on what is good for them. What would they rather have...A. People playing backlogged PS2 games B. Buying PS3 games. Sony is not your friend they are a business and they will do what it takes to make money while not killing their fanbase. As of right now I do not think anyone wants to do a ban of Sony just because of the new SKU or no BC. If you are then you prolly arnt a true gamer because some of the future exclusive games on the PS3 like MGS4, GT5, FF13, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, Infamous, Eight Days, Singstar, Afrika, and Haze will give you plenty to play at just $400. While still having the option to watch Blu-Ray movies.

Just ask anyone who builds computers how a top of the line gaming card costs $499 to $699 when it comes out then a year later you can get it for almost half the price. Look at the prices of HDTV's. Think about them last year vs the prices now. I've had almost a year to enjoy my PS3. I knew the price was going to drop in a year but I didn't want to wait a year. If you worry about price drops you will never get a system. If you wait a year for the price to drop why not wait another year because I'm sure it will drop again. BC is very important to me as I still play alot of FFXII and God of War.

I honestly think removing BC is a mistake. As EU PS3s have software emulation (which works great!) I could see Sony adding it later through a firmware update or even a chargable download on the PSN. They just dont want to announce it yet as they need to clear 60GB stock and ATM people are going to be leaning towards the 60GB as it seems like a more attractive offer.

Backward Compatibility is not that big of a deal because the PS2 is still in production, costs about $100 (the amount of the price cut), and is selling like hotcakes.

If you really need to play a PS2 game, you can buy a 40GB PS3, and a PS2, for roughly the same price as the 60GB PS3.

Early Adopters have the entire PS2 hardware in our machines and all the perks. I freakin' love my Playstation 3. 360 owners can't do half the things this does on their system out the box. Heavenly Sword is the best game out right now, I am currently playing it. I looove this game! To all my PS3 family, this game will drop your jaws with graphics and gameplay. Game informer gave it 8.75/9. It is 9.25 at least. Graphics are a 10, this game can only be done on PS3, you will see. I waited for this game to be my first on my PS3. So glad I did! I brought my PS3 on launch and have hardly played it. I have only ever brought the only 2 games that are worth buying (Motorstorm & Resistance) and completed them in a couple of days. The rest of the time I have spent playing my 360. You would not believe how pissed my girlfriend is that I spent £425 on a paperweight. is the fact that competition is so bad between consoles right now that it is guaranteed that one or two of the console makers will come out with a next gen system in by 2010 (which is a little over 2 years left). Microsoft dump the xbox in 4 years - it is conceivable. So how many whiners, cry babies, and hecklers will appear then.

I for one don't like waiting 5-10 years for a hardware update.

Besides technology is way two tempting. Quad processors will be cheap and plentiful by 2010 and GPUs will have leaped at least a couple of generations. This means that a $100 graphic card in 2010 on a PC will obliterate anything the consoles dig out. People keep forgeting that PCs still lurk in the back ground so even if there wasn't super stiff competition among the consoles by 2010 it will be easy to find a PC under $1000 that can compete with the consoles graphically.

So when console makers adjust their prices in a year or two to reflect the ever changing PC market are people going to cry then.

People, Gamers, we are in the middle of another technology revolution. In the next 5 years you will see technology that amazes you at prices that will astonish you. However the market will settle. I mean come on how many more pixels do we really need. Maybe 3D will be cool again but doesn't mean we need to go above 1080p. Basically it will come down to a battle of who pumps out the most physic base calculations and how realistic it will look. They might add another HDMI port or two to support multiple monitors but eventually customers will get to a "comfort" point and it won't be a battle of graphics but a battle of overall hardware and features.

Its the life of technology. Get over it!

Besides if you want to get technical 360 fanboys Sony's SKU set up is a smarter setup than Microsoft's sku line up and I don't even own a Playstation just my apparently rare, trusty old 360.

I think one past article stated that the new PS3 have greater Wi-Fi ranges and signal strengths (I could be wrong). But even if that's true, I'm glad I have the version that has the EE chip. I feel I played it smart in this console war as a consumer^^. Tempted to buy the PS3 when the release I stopped myself from doing so. The only reason I feel cheated is because of the consoles quit working on me. Even though I can get it repaired for free now I still hate the delay it takes to ship the console to get it repaired. I'm glad Sony is releasing a 40GB SKU for $400.00 It's about time. I dont care about backwards compatability, or extra USB ports/card media ports. I never used them on my 60GB PS3 anyways.

The bottom line is this. Sony got arrogant and thought that everyone and thier mom would go out and buy the PS3 for $600.00 just because it had the "Sony Playstation" logo on it. Then something wierd happened. They ran into competition. The 360 even with its RROD and the Japanese Consumer biased against it still outsold PS3 consistently and was offering the same graphics for less money. The Wii with its last generation graphics and cheaper price was also outselling the PS3 by an even larger margin worldwide.

You PS3 fanboys can diss the 360 and Wii for its shortcomings, but you should actually be thanking Microsoft and Nintendo for putting up some real competition to Sony this time. Because of that the PS3 has come down $200.00 since its launch and its not even a year old. Imagine what Sony would have charged for the PS3 if they had no competiton. $600.00 is a lot of money for a videogame console, I dont care what other features are included.

As I have always said the maximum I want to pay for any console is $400.00 The biggest beef I have with Sony was that they included Blu-Ray in every PS3 and charged us for it. It wasn't necessary, it's unproven, and added to the cost of the console.

But for $400.00 I will gladly take Blu-Ray along with the HD videogames that are exclusive to the PS3.

I looked into it though, and the Blu-ray drive is actually pretty cheap now compared to what it used to be: $85 vs. $130. The XDR RAM and Flex I/O bandwidth system are like the most expensive parts of the system, so much that I can see why Microsoft chose to use PCI Express. Lower performance (when compared directly) but a LOT cheaper.

Kutaragi really just went overboard with the components. I mean hell, the prototype had TWO HDMI ports and 3 Ethernet ports; that was just plain ridiculous. The only upside is that it's equating to some really sweet games, and it's good to see Kaz Hirai taking initiative and aggressively pricing the system.

If anything Paying £425($850)+ Bundle £170's ($340's) worth was value for money to me, and I'll tell you why.

1) The cheapest stand alone bluray player Was £499 ($1000), and lacked firmware upgrade or BD java capable and couldn't output hdmi 1.3a.

2) Backwards compatibility to PS2/Ps1 games which the new model doesn't have.

3)20 more gigabytes and two more USB ports and memory cards slots.

It was inevitable that Sony would drop the price of PS3 with minor sacrifices made to get to the main consumers who were waiting for a pricedrop.

So do I feel that I've been cheated? Short answer no

Bleeding edge tech. thats the way it is. Everyone Got what they wanted in the launch of PS3, well maybe not the guy who got shot. But I don't care what it is, new tech is not cheap. I bet everyone could replace their PC, with one now of the same specs for about 1/3 of the cost.

I would feel cheated if I had a 360 core system, or even premium and then later an "elite" comes out later for almost the same initial price with more features. The new SKU is not coming out with new features, and price drops are inevitable. Xbots were bit*hin about the 600 price, saying 400 is the "sweet" zone, and now here it is and they're still making comments. To the above, Crazy glue I sure as hell don't regret being able to watch all my friends play Motorstorm on a free online, playing Resistance during this time. What the hell did MS have its first year, jack sh*t! That's what!! I'm also sure a lot of Heavenly Sword and Warhawk fans would also disagree with you

thank God i didnt bought it when it launched, patience is a virtue indeed, plus the real good games are coming next year,i dont need extra usb ports, memory card readers? sorry dont need them either. Is there a cheaper blue ray player than the new ps3 sku?

and it's a good thing too since that's when Warhawk came out (my official substitute for Halo 2). Haven't used my memory card readers, but I am using 3 out of 4 USB ports. One charges my PSP =P. If you ever need more though, like say for Guitar Hero, USB hubs are like ten bucks.

PS3 is the cheapest Blu-ray player on the market, and one of the highest rated ones as well. I've got a few movies on that format, and the difference is huge if you have an HDTV. =]

The main reason why I'm waiting to buy my PS3 is because it's too expensive. The people who bought the system at $600 had the money to spend and knew what they were getting for their money. So the only people who might feel cheated are the ones who thought(forgetting launch history)that they were going to get exceptional launch titles back to back to back. What they forgot is that everything has growing pains as did the PS3. And is it just me or should you research the games that are out for a system before you buy it(Sony loyalist or not)

I don't feel cheated at all. My PS3 has the ability for backwards compatability via the emotion engine, which is now taken out of new sku's. By the way, I don't see what the big deal is about the Hard drive. I just took out the 60 gig and put in a 160GB hard drive. The only problem is those little screws can be a real b!tch. If you do swap your hard drive good luck trying to get it out of the cage, those screws can be really easily stripped. I had to actually drill the damn hard drive to get it out it was so bad stripped!

Hey im looking real close to this 40gig version of this PS3, and it just says broadband internet. It says no where on it about WIFI.... UMMMMMMM... lol If this dont have WIFI i WON'T BE GETTING THIS VERSION OR A PS3 ANYTIME SOON AT THAT. its bad enough that its not backwords compatable for PS2 games. My hunger for a PS3 just went away.. DAm you Sony.
