2010 was a defining year for driving games, with high profile titles such as Gran Turismo 5 and Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit reaping in high sales and critical acclaim. But it was a trio of racing games that managed to offer a fresh take on what was fast becoming a stale genre: ModNation Racers, Blur and Split/Second.
Unfortunately, despite their innovative ideas, they failed to catch on, and Blur’s poor performance ultimately led to the unfortunate demise of Bizarre Creations. The fact they were released within a weeks of each other probably didn’t help either, but the racing genre is neverthelesss getting back on track after a slump in recent years.
With this in mind, I thought it would be a spiffing idea to map out 2011’s upcoming grid of driving games to mark onto your racing calendar. So join me as we take a leisurely Sunday drive and speculate over the competition.
Digital Foundry : Evolution Studios' Motorstorm is one of the first, finest and most fondly remembered of launch titles for PlayStation 3. It's a release designed to answer the question posed by each new console generation: what makes a game 'next-gen'? With its robust physics engine and massive tracks, Motorstorm serves up a bold affirmative answer to this question, delivering an experience that could never have existed on prior console hardware. At the same time, the path to release was fraught with challenges that almost serve as a microcosm of the PlayStation 3 release situation itself. It was a success, however, with a trilogy of PS3 releases, plus PSP, Vita and even PS2 off-shoots.
After Driveclub and Onrush, the dev team will now contribute to and assist with the development of the upcoming NFS.
Never really got into it myself I remember getting it with ps3 and being a bit underwhelmed I preferred the RC version they did for vita 🙌🏻🤣
Richard writes: "The series may have a cult following, but ten years on Test Drive Unlimited 2 still upsets me. It was one of my most anticipated games ever, with a concept years ahead of what Forza Horizon could achieve. But it remains one of the buggiest launches of a game I can remember, completely tarnishing my memory of it."
DSOGaming writes: "TDU World is an Online Server and Mod Pack Project for Test Drive Unlimited 2 that is currently available for download."
Such an underrated game, the only problem I had with it was the car physics on anything more powerful the a Golf GTI. But to me this was the original Forza Horizon
