Crysis 2 review - 8/10 in Official PlayStation Mag

OPM calls FPS "excellent" but with a "bungled" opening

That's a good enough score for me to get it day one on PC/PS3. It does look like it's going to be the best looking multi platform game this year until BF3. I hope the PS3 version is 30 fps thru and thru with no dips.

starchild4829d ago

So far the two reviews to come out have been very positive. I am really glad that there is some decent length to the game. They also had very high praise for the graphics. It will be interesting to see how Battlefield 3 looks on consoles. For now, though, it is looking like Crysis 2 is a really strong FPS in terms of both its gameplay and visuals.

KillerBBs4828d ago (Edited 4828d ago )

I praise the Demo for Lag. Enjoy, I'm Not dropping a dime on this title.

The same people saying this game will be good are probabley the same guys that told you Black was the Sh!t... instead of Black Ops is Sh!t.

nveenio4828d ago

OPM tends to overrate, imo. I think an 80 metacritic score is about what we'll see for this title, though. The AI....it's terrible. And I'm vastly against letting a game's multiplayer features save/destroy a game's rating.

paintsville4828d ago

I can't blame some people for not purchasing this game. It is, afterall, the most advanced shooter on the market and , as such, requires superior hardware to achieve desired performance levels. As for the rest of us, 360/pc versions of this game are spectacular and will be a day one purchase. CRYTEK is really pushing the envelope and some pieces of hardware are having difficulty keeping up I guess.

nveenio4828d ago

Do you really have to troll like that?

CernaML4828d ago

lol @ paintsville. If Crysis 2 is the best looking game on the 360 then you should just lose any hope right now. The game looks like garbage on the 360 IMO. I guess it's because I already spoiled myself with the PC demo. But it's pretty damn ugly. Other multiplat titles look better let alone PS3 exclusives.

y0haN4828d ago

Black was awesome. Black Ops wasn't.

Graey4828d ago

@ Paintsville

...dude do you just live in stupid.

BloodyNapkin4828d ago

@paintsville

Lol thats funny, i love how saracstic you are.

Vherostar4828d ago

OXM by the same company gave it 9/10 I smell a conspiracy here or is it what we all already knew?? The purposely rate shooters higher on 36 0 as they know they are there only great games?

DualConsoleOwner4828d ago

Killzone 2 (2 years old game) looks better than xbox 360 Crysis 2.

king dong4828d ago

@ paintsville: just no.

@ dualconsoleowner/nasim: just no also....as if you own a 360

two examples of the worst types of fanboys on the net

YoungKingDoran4828d ago

@inveni
they overrate... but you reckon the metacritic score will be 80? 80 = 8/10
who gives a shit about metacritic anyway

of a playstation mag scoring this game higher than killzone 3 im going to wait for the nuetral reviews

Heavy_Rain4828d ago Show
ct034828d ago

Crysis 2 and Killzone 3 are in direct competition. They get compared to each other all the time, unlike COD and Killzone 3.

So he's got a point. With two close release dates, both titles similar in gameplay, both titles promising to deliver outstanding graphics, of course the exclusive game gets a better rating by Playstation Magazine.

hennessey864828d ago

I never mentioned cod, these two games are going head to head with each other so like i said im going to wait for neautral reviews and ill get it on the console which runs it best

nycredude4828d ago

I guess you will get it on PC then right hennessey86?

Seriously WTF does Killzone 3 have to do with this review?

dkgshiz4828d ago

OPM is not biased. They give fair reviews that are well written.

Silly gameAr4828d ago

Who are those guys always going on about conspiracy theories?

rob60214828d ago

@hennessey86

You must not get OPM in the mail like I do, there was a pretty good chance of it at least matching KZ3, they score multi-platorm games perfect all the time. Black ops got a 10/10. GT5 got an 8/10.

DaTruth4828d ago

Are they still biased when they write articles for and publish their monthly OXM magazines?

king dong4828d ago (Edited 4828d ago )

da truth: what would you say though if oxm gave halo, gears or forza a high score??? i wonder!

these official mags do have to tow the line slightly. coz what happens when they lose their "official" tag? thats rite, they lose a huge chunk of their readership. coz alot of people will buy the new officially endorsed mag coz they think it will be better and more informative.

use your brain

on topic. 8 is a great score! tomorrow homefront and next week crysis.. march is looking good

THC CELL4829d ago (Edited 4829d ago )

Not got high hopes on this game, but will give it ago

my money is on socom and other exclusives this month and next.#

on other hands this looks like the best xbox game they have ever seen so at least it will be played most on there console.

DrHouse4828d ago

Nice stealth troll comment. Nobody else may have seen what you did there but I did. And I am bubbling you down.

hennessey864828d ago

yep stealth troll bub down

DaTruth4828d ago (Edited 4828d ago )

What do you mean "stealth troll"? He's trolling right out in the open!

Edit@Cez of Rage below: "The beta download is 1.66 gb for 2 maps...lol...Black ops map pack ( great btw ) was under 900 mb...O_o"

A beta download would include all or portions of the game engine, a map pack would run with a disk which already has the game engine on it!

Styxoric4829d ago

Already have it on preorder for PS3, can't wait.

theEnemy4828d ago

I canceled my preorder when they released the MP demo on the 360 last month.

I'll try the MP demo first when it hits the PS Store.

The Meerkat4829d ago

5 hours until it gets going?

So its longer than KZ3 and BO

FailOverHero4828d ago

It takes 5 hours to get really going? Well we should be used to it by now, Level 40 anyone?

ct034828d ago

Except the 5 hours until it gets going is a flat-out lie. MINOR SPOILERS BELOW

MINOR SPOILERS HERE
-------------------
Within the first 5 hours you get to escape the submarine, one of the most intense game openings of all time.
You get to see the falling skyscraper, which is heavily goosebump-inducing and the closest you can get to playing Cloverfield meets War of the Worlds.
You get to drive a tank and blow your surroundings to smithereens while watching the best looking explosions a game has ever pulled off.
MINOR SPOILERS END HERE
-----------------------

If the first 5 hours of Crysis 2 don't immerse you, then neither will the rest of the game.

nycredude4828d ago

I just hope it isn't boring like the first one.

Biggest4828d ago

Just going by the length reported here as I've obviously not played the game. . .

FFXIII was slammed for its slow beginning. If this is the case with Crysis 2, expect the same from at least the console reviewers. Most of them expect OMGACTION!!!! from the jump. I prefer games that build from the ground up (not saying I don't also enjoy full on action titles). I didn't like the multiplayer beta very much, so I'll definitely be getting this on PC. I refuse to spend $60 for a game I'll only play a portion of.

HungPHATx4828d ago

KZ3 is 8-10 hrs on Normal !

LarVanian4828d ago

Dude as much as I love KZ3 that is a bit of an exaggeration. I managed to finish it in just over five hours on hard mode. I honestly can't imagine anyone taking ten hours to finish it on normal.

Insanelyman4828d ago

If killzone 3 took you more than 8 hrs to finish then you must be terrible at FPS. I even beat it on ELITE in under 6 hrs.

Also LarVanian is right about what he says and the SP is way too short.

HungPHATx4828d ago

Well I watch all the cut scenes and take my time with a game like KZ3 , I'm not one to rush through a game like this..... I know it could be done in 5 Hrs , but I chose to play it at a medium/Slow pace, but that's just me

Biggest4828d ago

I agree with what HungPHATx is saying, but I also agree with what everyone else is saying. Killzone 3 was way too short. It took me 8 hours on hard mode and I did watch all of the scenes (plus restarted a few because of that stupid audio sync bug). I do the same with all the MGS titles as well. My first play through is always slow as hell. Save the speed runs for after you've had the full experience.

dredgewalker4828d ago

I was shocked how K3 was short, honestly I was bit disappointed with the length. Thankfully the multiplayer was great but not enough reason for the sp campaign length.

DrHouse4828d ago

By a huge margin, Crytek said themselves that the single player is around 20 hours long.

Pandamobile4828d ago

It's not 20 hours long. It's about 10-12 on hard mode.

Shackdaddy8364828d ago (Edited 4828d ago )

They said their best testers finished it in about 12 hours on normal.

If your new to the game or you like playing around with things then it will take a lot longer.

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Crazyglues4828d ago (Edited 4828d ago )

I'm really confused by this... it makes no sense..

the mag says it takes maybe five hours of "persisting" through "a thorny, poorly signposted and indifferent shooter" until Crysis 2 really kicks off..

Now maybe it's because they never played Crysis 1 or Warhead, but I don't understand this at all because I've been watching the leaked beta videos...

(you can follow this link -he has the whole game up all the way to the end- WARING- following this link you could spoil the whole game for yourself -BE CAREFUL - http://www.youtube.com/user... )

-and the game jumps right into it... so unless they completely changed the game because of the leak, I don't see how they came to this conclusion.. Really Strange???

-anyway Demo tomorrow so we will at least get an idea of the MP if that's good then the game will most likely do really well, since these days a good MP can sell your game, but a good MP and SP can keep it selling...

I guess we will see soon enough for our self..

Still playing the beta on 360...the Pier 17 map sealed the deal...

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

The beta download is 1.66 gb for 2 maps...lol...Black ops map pack ( great btw ) was under 900 mb...O_o

I think it will release soon on PS3. I'll download it and see if there is a big difference in game play and graphics BUT they say it's the same.

The game play is so fast and smooth. Great animations and the level of detail, especially on Peir 17 is staggering. Broken docks, splintered wood, incredible water effects, the lighting, the massive size of the map...even the ceiling tiles in the building falling down...just incredible!!!

Skyline map is also becoming a fan favorite because of the close quarter action and the use of vertical game play which add so much to the game play...you can climb EVERYTHING in the map...check out this video featuring the 360/PS3 game play released by Crytek...WoW!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

I haven't played the full retail game obviously but giving the game an 8/10, while not bad, does seem a bit low for such a action packed, full value game as this...will have to wait another week to find out.

Story trailer: This is all in REAL TIME...WoW

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

a_bro4828d ago

if that pier 17 map sealed the deal for you, then you must have low standards...

playing this on PC was a major turn off, although pretty, it played like COD...

Why do I need another COD CopyCat Game? and to top it off, no DX11 support until like 1-2 months later.
Obviously, Crytek's focus was on consoles...

jetlian4828d ago

this game has vertical play unlike cod. My cuz played it and hated it at first becuz of the verticality. After awhile he liked it

rdgneoz34828d ago

"The beta download is 1.66 gb for 2 maps...lol...Black ops map pack ( great btw ) was under 900 mb"
Was there a separate download for the whole client/application before that 1.66gb download for the 2 maps? If so, then that's a lot of work put into those 2 maps. If not, then do you honestly think all 1.66 gb of that download are actually the contents of the map?

Here are Star Wars The Force Unleashed, Crysis 2, RAGE & Resident Evil 2 Remake with Ray Tracing

YouTube’s members ‘Digital Dreams’ and ‘Jose cangrejo’ have shared some videos, showcasing Pascal Gilcher’s Reshade mod – which adds Ray Tracing/Path Tracing effects – in some really old games such as Star Wars The Force Unleashed, Crysis 2, RAGE and Resident Evil 6.

I'm still learning how to look for the differences. At first I was focusing on shadows for some reason but I don't think that changes much, is it reflections that change?

rashada071806d ago (Edited 1806d ago )

It is supposed to be simulating how light actually works- so yes if light is reflecting off a surface accurately it should show reflection or an effect that matches what you are looking at in the environment. Next time you play a game look at a puddle of water there may be just a "baked" in texture that if you aren't paying attention seems like it is reflecting but it isn't. I would say though if the light is reflecting more accurately I would think that would give more accurate shadows as well.
I am still not 100% sold on it- it looks okay but I can't get over the hardware price jump for better reflections..

Taz X141806d ago

While games won't look immensely better, it opens up more possibilities overall. Understandably, the price jump is huge. But, that can be said for being at the forefront for any new technology. I'm currently using a 2080ti and while I've played a few games that enable it, the gpu also plays everything else incredibly well so it's not like you're buying this tech for ONLY that option. Enthusiasts will pay top dollar to check out the newest things, but this will eventually become an everyday consumer and by then they'll have optimized and become a lot cheaper.

warriorcase1805d ago

Ray/path tracing can be used how the developer wants it to be. Tracing can be used to calculate shadows/lighting, reflection and even audio, where audio waves are calculated on the bounce off material types to simulate enviroment and echos accuratly.

Should also keep in mind that this ray/path tracing system is different and less accurate option from Nvidias RTX branded type. McFly's is a reshade that layers over the top of the game and therefor the quality will vary drastically. For example you can see nice reflection in the Star Wars demo here but it then introduces colour clipping with the light saber. On a video of GTA 5 for example it was incorrectly projecting a reflection of a red car onto the road which caused a very faint red glow on the ground around the car.

If you want to see a good example of a game developed with ray tracing reflection and lighting in mind then you could look up the youtube video of "Control - Exclusive E3 RTX GAMEPLAY Trailer".

DigitallyAfflicted1806d ago

It supposed to add more realistic light Not actually more light effects and explosions

traumadisaster1806d ago

I hate to say it but I’m fine with fake lights, shadows, reflections. I just kind of like the effect, it’s also great it saves resources for other things.

I’ve been checking out some original Xbox games on x360/x1x and the engine has fake light streaming in through a stained glass window, and I love it even though I know it’s not real time lighting. Heck it even shifts as I move about.

I’ve about convinced my self rt and hdr just doesn’t work for me. Before hdr I would even complain damn why are the headlights killing me they are so bright.

I notice most frame rate, then jaggies, then resolution; with the last two interchangeable depending.

Other day watched an enthusiast rave over 4k and the poor guy was in 1080p. I played the same game the night before and thought wow this is clean, I wonder if it’s 4k, but knew differently and I thought wow even resolution is not always important. The next day he apologized and was surprised he could be fooled.

RaidenBlack1806d ago

EA should have released the Crysis Trilogy Remaster for this gen.

FGHFGHFGH1801d ago

How come the lightsabers don't give off any light? Even in the EA star wars game the guy uses it to light up a dark cave. I guess if it is using frostbite it will support rtx cards.
