iPad 2 Equal To NGP In Terms Of Raw Graphical Horsepower, says Bolt Creative (Modojo)

Sony wowed audiences with its Next Generation Portable (NGP), the official evolution of the PSP. Despite the machine's graphical brilliance, however, Apple may have beaten it to the punch with the company's latest product, iPad 2.

While speaking to Bolt Creative's Dave Castelnuovo, the brains behind the successful iPhone App, Pocket God, he remarked that the iPad 2 is on par with and possibly better than the NGP when it comes to eye popping visuals.

I skimmed a few Engadget articles... didn't see anything about enhanced hardware. Most of it talked about a thinner profile, that new Smart Cover thing, and added cameras.

unless apple can state that the Ipass2 will have as much CPU power and ram storage as the NGP im not entitled to a comment. the fact remains that these 2 devices were meant for 2 different means. im sure the ipad2 has gaming capability's but it wasn't design around the idea that it would be only used for gaming. while the NGP wants to dip into the smartphone gaming market. so they added smartphone features around there gaming platform.

Honestly, the ipad2 could have more graphical power compared to other portable devices for all I care, but the NGP or even the 3DS will stand out above for gaming just for the control pad/buttons. Seeing as the NGP and 3DS have touch screens, I really can't see very many unique games that could only be done on the ipad2. Hopefully no one will lambastes me for my opinion, since I have a Google nexus S and access to my girlfriends ipad. Frankly speaking, angry birds , plants vs zombies and stupid zombies are fun casual games and all but they are no where close to my NDS or PSP for gameplay just for the physical controls alone.

The SGX543MP4 on NGP is more than likely to be clocked at 400Mhz with 128MB Vram and 512MB of speedy eddr2. Just by the fact of having Vram it has much more graphical potential than the iPad 2. But that is not all the it has a Quad Cortex A9 at 1/1.2Ghz and presumably, a NEON engine and L2 cache controller that will allow it to have more L2 cache boosting performance efficiency of each CPU core

The iPad 2 on the other hand has a dual GPU SGX543MP2 at meager 160Mhz/200Mhz (not to mention it pushes a 30% higher res thus reducing perf) the NGP GPU has more than 4x the raw performance which is boosted even further by the Vram, lower res and Neon engine, the CPU is easily over 2x better

Then you have the fact that NGP uses console oriented OS with low level access API that allows it to take the most out of every mm of gaming silicone

Here's what Carmack had to say on Twitter about Sony's new gizmo: "Low level APIs will allow the Sony NGP to perform about a generation beyond smart phones with comparable specs.

So even now that the Specs are a magnitude more powerful (than iPad 2) they have the advantage of an low level API over iPad 2 which create and even greater gap of graphical capabilities, and even when iPad 3 or 4 starts caching up on hardware (With the A6/7?) NGP will still be a generation beyond on its games thanks to the low access level API

Not to mention apple only updates the SoC hardware every other generation, like the iPhone 4 A4 used iPhone 3GS parts clocked higher

Oh and btw Dave Castelnuovo should get his facts straight Epic games said the NGP is roughly over 4x more capable graphic wise than ANY mobile platform they seen, NOT the iphone 4 or iPad those are the slowest spec equipped devices out there. He obviously meant to compare with Tegra 2 devices which are in part 4x more capable than the iPhone 4

Note to editor, you cant compare cheap dirty rushed out development of phone games with games developed by big studios with bug budgets. Ever heard of you get what you paid for? you get the value of your $6 app can never compare to a dedicated console

And AAA games is something that does no exits on iOS gaming dictionary, this is coming from an app junkie who onw over 200 apps most of its novelty wears down fast

I didn't even know the iPad has no USB until reading this forum and doing some research. The two devices are not in the same ball park when it comes to actual games or gaming. Very different ideas. One focuses on games and gaming and the other can do games. End of story.
