PS3 Firmware Update 3.60 Now Live

Sony has made live the latest PS3 firmware, 3.60. The firmware itself has included some new minor features for all users, but PlayStation Plus subscribers will be the ones that greatly benefit from this new firmware update thanks to the inclusion of cloud storage.

@Maddens Raiders

Sure it is security related, using cloud services removes the data from your PS3 so you can't actually touch it in anyway.

Soon games will become cloud based as well where some data will only be on the cloud like the game EXE etc and therefore can't be pirated unless you have paid for access to the EXE.

Everyone will be required to have an net connection alas this won't faze Sony as there's around 500+ million people worldwide using the net so plenty of people for a major userbase.

Those with no net will get left behind and that will be their own problem not Sony's.

ravinash4804d ago

Only problem with that is, last night I couldn't connect to the playstation network.
Which was fine, as I was only going to play Mass Effect 2....But... If my saved game was on the cloud, I wouldn't have been able to play.

Cloud sounds great, but I'd never trust it for things I want to access not matter what state my internet connection is in.

DatNJDom814803d ago

The game still saves to your hard drive but it now also gives you the option to be backed up on cloud as well. So even if you can't get online, you can continue your locally saved game.

I am thinking this is similar to how the trophies are stored on their server. Your PSN ID is basically a folder on their system. Until now it simply retained a running tab of what you purchased/downloaded on the PS store as well as your list of trophies earned. So now they added uploadable game saves.

It looks as if once you upload your save, it could do the same thing as the trophies do and sync so you wont have to remember to re-up your save each time.

When it comes to actually using the save, it will need to be copied locally. So I could go to my buddies house, sign into his ps3 as me, download joe danger and my game save and we can play where i left off.

Not exactly ground breaking but nice none the less. Shame it is only for the plus members but it just proves what i have been saying all along about that service. Sony will have to make the newer stuff members only as a way to keep the service relevant. otherwise those who are members would question why pay if everyone else gets it as part of the free service.

Smart move sony...ms has taught you well. That's not an insult.

***Cloud sounds great, but I'd never trust it for things I want to access not matter what state my internet connection is in.***

You can still keep a copy of saves on your machine as well as on the cloud. In fact, I haven't used it yet, but I would guess that the Cloud operates more as a backup system and not one to replace the location as to where saves are initially stored.

PS Cloud.

@ Rynx - hemmeroids aren't defective, but yeah this is not security related, so that's just an ignorant ass comment.

Death24944804d ago

Done.

O.T: Does it feels like those days of getting awesome features "I.E. dynamice themes, Divx VOD, Wallpapers, text chat", have been dwindled to nothing more than security updates and features we care little about.

zag4804d ago

@death2494

Blame the hackers and people who keep hacking/pirating games on the PS3.

Sony has to retain it's income stream otherwise there's no point in keeping the PS platform.

zeal0us4804d ago

"Sony has to retain it's income stream otherwise there's no point in keeping the PS platform."

I know pirating exist but i highly doubt its that high sony just want to set an example.

Please tell me who in there right mind want to keep buy high as blu-ray disc just to pirate games.

Now if there's a way to run pirated games off the hard drive without a disc then I will take back everything I have said.

badz1494804d ago

you really are clueless aren't you? I'm not bashing you though, as in this case I think it's for the best and the very proof you don't pirate PS3 games!

Death24944804d ago

Maybe I should have stated my position before making those remarks. I understand that Sony is just keeping their system safe. What I'm referring to was even before the ps3 was hacked. Remember when ps3 gamers were up in arms because we wanted "In-game" Voice chat? I, personally would like to be able to create and add my own Dynamic theme. Sony is all about "Create, Play, Share", so allow us to make our own dynamic themes.

The most feature ridden update of all time... but I really like the new controller option, its something I've been wanting for a long time, seeing as I was sick of watching 22 minute shows on Netflix and needing to turn the controller back on after every episode.

pileobunnies4803d ago

I use the PS3 remote -- it never turns off. Yay!

OGharryjoysticks4804d ago

Hope it fixes the issues AT&T customers have been having with the slowest downloads known to man.

---stone---4804d ago

Thats AT&T's issue, not Sony's.

OGharryjoysticks4803d ago

You might be right, but 2 months ago everything was fine. I was really pleased with how I got better connections and speed with AT&T since I switched from Comcast. But honestly thinking back, things fell apart around the time Sony started releasing PS3 updates in quick succession because of the hacks. My computer hasn't been hit with the dreadful downnload performance that my PS3 has either so while it could be AT&T, I also think it could be Sony's fault unfortunately.

hellzsupernova4804d ago

how long did it take you? i live in NZ and we have 3 world broadband and it only took me 7min23seconds

OGharryjoysticks4803d ago

I didn't time last night's update, but I would guess it took between an hour to an hour and a half, I know that's a wide range, but I didn't just sit there. I just set it up and left to do a bunch of stuff between checking on it and came back like 3 times before it was finally finished.

It wasn't always like this. 4 months ago my service was like super speed and an update would probably have been finished in 2 or 3 minutes.

hellzsupernova4803d ago

holy crap thats insaine! no wonder people think psn sucks lol. are ytou sure you havnt gone over your limit or something? cause thats not right

lodossrage4803d ago

I doubt it's sony's fault as you say OG. If it were a Sony issue, then it would happen to all the other internet providers. Not just AT&T. Even if this happened around the time security firmwares started coming, the fact remains, it's ONLY AT&T and not any other ISP having that issue. Whose to say AT&T didn't change anything within their own infrastructure that's causing the issue.

godslayer4294804d ago

"i can set what time i want my controller to shut off"

cuz i asked for this feature right

sigh

at least we have cloud storage =]

ps plus=worth it

Rolling the Dice: Do Modern RPGs Miss the Point of Team-Based Play?

It seems it was long time ago. A bunch of friends spending hours on end playing RPG games, sitting around the table with the box of cold pizza. Excited about the story, listening to the Game Master, they were completely engaged in the worlds only visible to them and their imaginations.

The GM is the programmer, and in MMOs and co-ops, you can play with others. If you want to ONLY use your imagination for the visuals, read a book.

1) Hope they put it on disc this time.
2) Hope this is a positive for Neptune coming over as well.

Demons Souls5078d ago

If so, that's being developed & published by Idea Factory. Compile Heart has nothing to do with it (Thank God for that).

Godmars2905078d ago (Edited 5078d ago )

Thought Compile Heart was one of the companies lending characters.

Was also speaking in general as in regards to a US of Neptune. If these guys are offing a second game, NIS or Atlus, both of whom offer quirkier titles, will put that one out.

@kagon01:
My issue isn't - wholly - with the DL-only option, but the price. The first game should be $30. Maybe $40, and by that I mean $39.99. The only reason its $45 is the 360 disc version which has extras. Nevermind that by all rights its a PS2 game. Something that proabbly could have been done if the devs had the GOW2 engine or tools.

ClownBelt5078d ago

I approve of this god damn message.

Could have gotten my 60 bucks if they just put it on a disc.

Another exclusive damnn the ps3 keeps on rollin wit games awesome ;)

Jack-Pyro5078d ago

Is this a half decent SRPG, porn aside, cause if it is, i might just decide to go and buy it for the 360.

Anon73495078d ago

There's no porn just some sexual innuendos but that's it.

Also it is a great game by itself, maybe not graphically but everything else is top tier.

RedDevils5078d ago

so it had some kind of "top tier" porn story jk

ThanatosDMC5078d ago

Yup, it's a decent game. I just hate that a move has to go first before any attack options.
