PS3 Firmware Update 3.60 Now Live

Sony has made live the latest PS3 firmware, 3.60. The firmware itself has included some new minor features for all users, but PlayStation Plus subscribers will be the ones that greatly benefit from this new firmware update thanks to the inclusion of cloud storage.

Sure it is security related, using cloud services removes the data from your PS3 so you can't actually touch it in anyway.

Soon games will become cloud based as well where some data will only be on the cloud like the game EXE etc and therefore can't be pirated unless you have paid for access to the EXE.

Everyone will be required to have an net connection alas this won't faze Sony as there's around 500+ million people worldwide using the net so plenty of people for a major userbase.

Those with no net will get left behind and that will be their own problem not Sony's.

Only problem with that is, last night I couldn't connect to the playstation network.
Which was fine, as I was only going to play Mass Effect 2....But... If my saved game was on the cloud, I wouldn't have been able to play.

Cloud sounds great, but I'd never trust it for things I want to access not matter what state my internet connection is in.

The game still saves to your hard drive but it now also gives you the option to be backed up on cloud as well. So even if you can't get online, you can continue your locally saved game.

I am thinking this is similar to how the trophies are stored on their server. Your PSN ID is basically a folder on their system. Until now it simply retained a running tab of what you purchased/downloaded on the PS store as well as your list of trophies earned. So now they added uploadable game saves.

It looks as if once you upload your save, it could do the same thing as the trophies do and sync so you wont have to remember to re-up your save each time.

When it comes to actually using the save, it will need to be copied locally. So I could go to my buddies house, sign into his ps3 as me, download joe danger and my game save and we can play where i left off.

Not exactly ground breaking but nice none the less. Shame it is only for the plus members but it just proves what i have been saying all along about that service. Sony will have to make the newer stuff members only as a way to keep the service relevant. otherwise those who are members would question why pay if everyone else gets it as part of the free service.

You can still keep a copy of saves on your machine as well as on the cloud. In fact, I haven't used it yet, but I would guess that the Cloud operates more as a backup system and not one to replace the location as to where saves are initially stored.

Maybe I should have stated my position before making those remarks. I understand that Sony is just keeping their system safe. What I'm referring to was even before the ps3 was hacked. Remember when ps3 gamers were up in arms because we wanted "In-game" Voice chat? I, personally would like to be able to create and add my own Dynamic theme. Sony is all about "Create, Play, Share", so allow us to make our own dynamic themes.

You might be right, but 2 months ago everything was fine. I was really pleased with how I got better connections and speed with AT&T since I switched from Comcast. But honestly thinking back, things fell apart around the time Sony started releasing PS3 updates in quick succession because of the hacks. My computer hasn't been hit with the dreadful downnload performance that my PS3 has either so while it could be AT&T, I also think it could be Sony's fault unfortunately.

I didn't time last night's update, but I would guess it took between an hour to an hour and a half, I know that's a wide range, but I didn't just sit there. I just set it up and left to do a bunch of stuff between checking on it and came back like 3 times before it was finally finished.

It wasn't always like this. 4 months ago my service was like super speed and an update would probably have been finished in 2 or 3 minutes.

I doubt it's sony's fault as you say OG. If it were a Sony issue, then it would happen to all the other internet providers. Not just AT&T. Even if this happened around the time security firmwares started coming, the fact remains, it's ONLY AT&T and not any other ISP having that issue. Whose to say AT&T didn't change anything within their own infrastructure that's causing the issue.

Edit2: Cloud storage might eventually come for regular PSN. Sony said they don't have any plans as of yet which makes sense. To some people, Cloud storage might be the selling feature to upgrade.

Cloud storage is a cool idea, but really, how many will actually make use of it? I know I won't be using it. I only have one PS3 and everyone I know that has a PS3 only has a single PS3. Storing saves is great for the few people that will make use of it, but I just can't see the average PS+ user taking advantage of the storage.

I updated my HDD awhile ago to a 500GB, just use the backup feature. It will copy everything from your current drive, not just game saves.

The problem with that is you'll have to activate your username on their system, something you're only allowed to do a limited number of times. I really can't see them allowing you to use your game saves on their username, that would let them collect Trophies that they didn't earn.

actually, you can put your account on more than 5 ps3s. after the 5th, you just cant download anything that you have previously done. i did this when i got my new ps3, and had to get one of my accounts erased because it let me use my profile, but wouldnt let me download any of my old dlc.

You say that now. Wait until your PS3 dies and you lose all your game saves. Then you will understand just how useful this feature is. Not everyone wants to go out and buy an external HDD just to back up their PS3. On top of that this lets you backup copy protected saves. Doing a system backup on an external HDD will not restore copy protected data. That means most RPGs that you would put 60+ hours into would not be backed up without this feature. Trust me i know from experience. :(

While I've had nearly all of my saves backed up to a USB Thumb Drive, my protected save files have always been at risk in the event of a system crash (I had to consoles crash well within a week of one another and lost plenty - Rockband 2 career, DJ Hero Career, Demon's Souls with 3 characters, 2 of which had already gone through 2 gameplay sessions).

Once this update hit, I simply went back in to my save files and backed up the only remaining save files that haven't been copied, to the Online storage.

Now all of my Protected Save Files are safely tucked as a copy in the Online Storage, while everything else sits safely on a USB Thumb Drive. I feel content, safe!

Hopefully the 150mb limit will be increased over time coz some saves are rather big , mafia 2 is 40 mb , also I hope I'm wrong but I can see a lot more games and maybe eventually every game being copy protected now as it would stop trophy game save cheats and also make people need to buy plus . There is a massive difference between KB and MB, bro. 1MB = 1024KB, and most saves are in the KBs (with the exception of some such as Fallout 3, which go into the 10s.)

this is actually really tempting me to get PS+ (as if i wasn't interested before), as i've already had two PS3's die on me, costing me my game saves that couldn't be copied over (which is, like, most of the god damned games on the system).

if me and my wife can back up our game saves (like Dragon Age: Origins, which i've had to start over from the beginning due to losing the saves when my PS3 croaked), i'm all over it.

it's absolutely ridiculous that i don't have control over my own damn game saves. companies can DRM the fuck out of their games if they want, but my game progress is MY game progress. i should be allowed to copy that data and back it up on my discretion, kind of like how it's been since saving games on memory cards.

if Cloud storage is, at the least, a reliable way for me to backup my gaming data, then i'm all for it. but i don't see why it's so hard for developers to unlock our saves.

Housemarque just released that awesome patch for Dead Nation that lets us copy our saves over.

I played it Tuesday...which is strange because I always copy my saves after I play, and it wouldn't allow me to. Then I updated the firmware and can now back up the save files to the online storage, but not to a USB Flash drive.

Oh well, it's backed up either way. I'd love to have a bit more control though.

(Almost) all my saved game files are stored on my USB key, so I'm good to go. That said, Demon's souls & Killzone 2 have locked game save files which cannot be copied onto a USB key, Does it mean you can save them on the PS Cloud or what?

Off topic: I think I've just come to realize that your online profile for Killzone 2 (perks n stuff) is actually stored on the servers, like Warhawk, not on your game save file...?

I really hope the next update brings major fixes to the internet browser.I appreciate sony fixing bugs and other stuff through fw updates but let's be honest people the browser is a pile of turds.It constantly freezes on sites like youtube and it lags for such a powerful console why does it have such a crappy web browser?It uses flash 9 which would of been fine back in 07 but most sites as of now don't function properly with it and javascript is outdated as well.I just want a fix or possibly a new browser like opera or firefox but netfront sucks big time.

anyway, it's a handy feature to be able to back up your saves, from somebody who has lost loads of save data due to a ps3 failure this is an invaluable feature, and if you have a second ps3 it's especially useful to synch saves between you two consoles without the need for a usb storage device.
