Newell coy on Counter-Strike 2

Gabe Newell definitely seemed a little taken aback when asked at GDC - on video, in front of a live audience, to be fair - if and when we'll ever see the release of Counter-Strike 2.

1.6 is still the best CS, i doubt we will see a new CS till after Half Life 3 and a new engine.

GamerSciz4804d ago

I think a HUGE selling point would be with an upgraded engine and the release of HL2 EP3 they would release a similar orange box type of deal with HL2 EP2, HL2 EP3, Portal 2 and Counter Strike 2...If they were to announce CS2 in that manner I think that "orange box" would sell like hotcakes.

ATiElite4804d ago

Counter Strike is a perfect example of a great game that doesn't require AAA graphics....but an update would be nice but 50,000 (or whatever it is) players per don't really care.

Mista T4804d ago

I wish. Eventually one day I think there will be a Counter Strike 2

TheIneffableBob4804d ago (Edited 4804d ago )

I'm positive that there will be a new Counter-Strike game, or at least a sort of spin-off of Counter-Strike (same type of gameplay but in a different setting).

Turtle Rock has been working on a new project ever since they finished the first Left 4 Dead back in 2008. I think they'll either announce it early 2012, after Portal 2 and DotA 2 release. Perhaps alongside a Half-Life 3 with Source Engine 2...?!

CS SOURCE ON CONSOLES PLEASE!
Theres no excuse!

NarooN4804d ago

PS3 could support it since it has keyboard/mouse support.

il-mouzer4804d ago

then that would beat the point of it being on console

NarooN4804d ago

Not really. Not everyone has a gaming PC. UT3 was great on PS3, full mod support, integrated mod browser, full keyboard/mouse support, server browser. Had everything the PC version had.

Ducky4804d ago

^ You don't need a gaming PC to run CounterStrike.

il-mouzer4804d ago

sure, but few people would want to play with a kb/m on their consoles, so the majority would end up playing with their gamepads - I don't really see any success there

Valve doesn't care about Counter-Strike. I don't even know why they're doing this DotA bullshit. It's like they're trying as hard as they can to avoid Half-Life and CS.

lochdoun4804d ago (Edited 4804d ago )

What??? How does Valve not care about HL and CS?
A year ago they updated all of the old source games including Half Life 2 and Counter Strike, improving the lighting, models, graphics and adding achievements... for FREE.
What other company would do that kind of fan service?

NarooN4804d ago

Lol they didn't do anything to the models, only improved the lighting a bit, but that was only because the games got updated to the new engine. And who cares about achievements? They don't improve gameplay in any shape or form.

Valve said the reason why the Episodes got created was so fans wouldn't have to wait ages between games anymore. It's 2011 and EP2 released in late 2007. Nice commitment, valve.

The only good thing they added to CSS was multi-core support. The update broke the gameplay, which pissed off the whole community except for the obligatory white-knighters. Most of the issues that people have been requesting get fixed STILL aren't fixed. So much for caring about the fanbase, huh?

NYC_Gamer4804d ago

they care because a lot of people still play counter-strike

NarooN4804d ago

That doesn't even make sense. Just because people play the game means Valve cares about it?

Best Shooter of 2023

VGChartz's Lee Mehr: "Ah, yes... the shooter. While many will besmirch the genre for being just about shooting guns, I say that's an unfair judgement. There's also the potential for stabbing, exploding, incinerating, impaling, and so much more! Jokes aside, 2023 was an... interesting year for quality, in that it felt like a coin toss whether a big-budget shooter would actually be worth anyone's time. Below are the final contenders for the year, ranging from modern-military shooters to a new IP that didn't seem like it'd ever release. Interesting, indeed."

Dang. In its darkest hour COD still gets nominated? The genre needs to do better.

coolbeans113d ago

The unavoidable pitfalls of a 50/50 split influence between community & staff on GOTY awards. MW III was awarded a 3/10 on the site too. lol

I paused Atomic Heart in anticipation for the RT update. I don't think that ever came and at this point it's basically dropped for me.
