Rumor: Bungie and Microsoft Breakup?

I am quite skeptical on this... As much as Halo is a major franchise, Microsoft isn't just going to let a business they've bought go like that... I can see employees of Bungie quitting or something and going to other game companies, like what occurs after most games are released, but to say Microsoft just invested millions if not billions of dollars into the company and they give it up in... what seven year? This sounds like bull. After MS lost Bizarre to Activision, they wouldn't want to lose another developer. Plus, Bungie will need to buy out all the shares that Microsoft owns in the company in order for the transaction to work, which is why I think this is fake. In the summer of 2000 it was announced that Microsoft would purchase the company formerly known as Bungie Software, Inc. and make it Bungie Studios, a part of Microsoft's gaming division under Ed Fries.

As part of the transaction, Take Two Interactive received all rights to the Myth and Oni franchises in return for the 19.9% of Bungie they had purchased in 1999. They also reportedly received the rights to produce two games using the Halo engine.

Further, Microsoft, with their acquisition, received ownership rights of all IP developed by Bungie including Marathon -- the precursor to the Halo series and hence why it showed up on XBLA.

The only system I own, besides a PS2, is an Xbox 360. I had mine for 2 years, and I just got the RROD a month or so ago.(it's still out for repairs, I'm dying) I think it's entirely possible that every single Xbox 360 besides the Elite possibly can get the RROD. They were all manufactured the same way, so why would 1 system be susceptible to the RROD, and another not? And, please 360 loving maniacs, don't call me Sony fanboy. Disclaimer: I wouldn't say that i believe (damn there is that word again!) this rumor, cause it sounds a little to much like friend of a friend of my cousins uncle, twice removed told me XYZ.

Lets try to sort through all the gibberish

a) Halo and anything related to it is property of Microsoft games - period. You won't see anything Halo on a non Microsoft System
b) the halo engine is property of Microsoft games - period (and on top the halo3 engine wouldn't work with the PS3 anyways, cause its completely build around the 10mb edo ram thing and nailed upon the 360 Hardware)
c) Microsoft may have acquired the Bungie studio, but to suggest that a breakup is impossible is laughable. Last time i checked the law SLAVERY was illegal, even for Microsoft. There are multiple scenarios where a split might happen. Forced or not, thats not an issue. A gamestudio is only worth as much as the creative core that it contains. And no, you can not simply replace anyone and hope it will still work, things are not that simple. If e.g. the core team leaves, then Bungie as you know it is gone, no matter if Microsoft still clutches the name in its paws.

But for the sake of discussion lets assume the rumour is true. Not that it most likely is, but just hypothetically.
A few questions come to mind in that case.

1) Why?
Bungie reps stated after the Halo3 release that they did not want to make yet another halo game, that they instead wanted to make a new IP.
-> Microsoft Games greedy as ever tells em to stuff that and start working on Halo4.
-> Bungie crew does not seem to like that kind of relationship anymore and wants to cut the choking embrace.

2) how ?
Easy, Bungie reps meet with MS reps and put a simple threat on the table, a simple suggestion:
a) We seperate in peace, and we will continue to support the Xbox360 (maybe even exclusively) but we will make our own games, for our own money.
b) you don't allow us to leave, then the creative heads and the top profile people simply leave Bungie(quit the job), and you only have a worthless corpse of a gamesstudio left.
Your decision Mr MS rep.

-> Faced with that it would be likely that Microsoft makes an agreement with the studio to split up in peace and retain at least the loyalty to the system.
-> Someone spills the news to a friend, it gets posted on the net, flamewar commences on N4G.

That is one scenario that is realistic imho, IF THE RUMOR WAS TRUE.
As i don't think it is, thats mere speculation.

But people should get the "they can never leave" nonsense out of their heads. A gamestudio is not an accounting office, its a creative team that mostly work around a rather small core group who drive the whole team to success. If these core people drop out at the same time cause they are fed up with how they are treated (and boy oh boy, creative people are easily angered when handled wrong)then the whole team breaks up, or the leftover crew stays to produce mediocre crap. There are people you just can not replace in a creative team that worked together for so long.

if (IF) bungie breaks away from microsoft, it will be to have more control over their xbox360 "exclusive" games...not to make ps3 games...we do not have enough info to come to a conclusion but the reasonable explanation is that bungie is moving away from M$ so they can make games besides halo...my money says that bungie still produces the next halo with M$'s money backing it...m$ will also publish all of bungies "360 exclusives"....similar to mr. jaffe and eat,sleep,play .... so all you fanboys can quit hyperventilating and go back to playing your "run and gun" fps of choice..............UT3 FTW.........

At the thought of Halo possibly coming to another console, people's mouths water. However, since Halo is the intellectual property of Microsoft, fanboys will have to settle for their usual case of sour grapes.

I have a feeling this article will be debunked in the next 48 hours. However if this is true, it still doesn't really hurt Microsoft. The key factor is that Microsoft owns Halo. They would just have to get someone else to develop the next Halo game. What would happen if the next Halo was developed by a company like, oh I don't know, Epic? Imagine the possibilities! This is of course, assuming the article is true, which I doubt. Either way, no reason for Microsoft or Halo fans to worry.
