Satoru Iwata, President of Nintendo, believes that social games are both leading innovation and at the same time killing the industry -- so much so, that if trends continue, it’s going to be very difficult for developers to earn a living making social games. In particular, he made the innuendo that certain phone manufacturers do not care about the quality of the content, and they are perfectly content at selling free or extremely cheap games in mass quantity that might not be the highest of quality. He went on to state that Nintendo focuses on the value of the game and that content is the top priority. What’s interesting to note, is that between Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo is the company with the most amount of games, and they are also the company with the dreaded title of “shovelware” for much of their Wii titles. With the launch of the 3DS is Nintendo now going to focus on quality and make a solid attempt at eliminating their shovelware reputation? GoozerNation reports from GDC.
It's been a decade since the last entry in Railroad Tycoon — the series that practically made the word "tycoon" into its own games genre — and, as I was told, Simon Hellwig figured that was long enough. The Kalypso co-founder and president wanted one, if not for business purposes, then at least for himself.
Arguments over how the industry treats women are a good thing - they show how far we've come, as well as how much remains to be done
If you ever feel depressed about how this industry is performing in terms of gender representation and treatment of minorities - and god knows there are plenty of reasons to feel depressed about that particular subject - then this year's GDC has been a very interesting event to watch. It's not the most commercial or high-profile event the industry has to offer, and for that very reason, it's the beating heart of the industry's social calendar - the place that people go to talk about the creativity, business and culture of games, both in the official sessions and (perhaps more importantly) in bars and parties in the evenings.
This week’s show features an interview with Bioshock Infinte’s composer, Garry Schyman, and also includes new info on the Witcher 2. We also babbled about last week’s Game Developers Conference and all the interesting stuff Sony showed off.
Awesomeness~
Hopefully they'll focus on content. The key is quality, not quantity.
If nintendo want the sales, they are to ignore their competition and not get their attention. Just get on with promoting the 3DS.
So far, even though I wouldnt get the iPad 2 or 3DS, I would be more on getting the iPad 2...
My favorite part was the NGP :P
Sorry nintendo, just going to have to face the facts that ANYONE can produce a better quality game than 99% of NES titles your selling for $5 each... It'll continue like that, so nintendo better start making top quality hardware if they want top quality games.
