Yars’ Revenge, which launched in May 1981 for the Atari 2600, ended up being Atari’s best-selling original title on the seminal console. Twenty-nine years later, the publisher is releasing a reboot of sorts that re-imagines the game as a third-person on-rails shooter in the vein of Rez or Sin & Punishment.

"Yars’ Revenge is a reboot/re-imagination of an Atari 2600 game of the same name. You play as none other then a Yar fighting against an enemy known as the “Qotile,” which is also protected by a large energy shield. Originally Yar was more of a shoot at ships kind of shooter without much more. Yar changes the game up in the newest title changing up the game mechanics a bit.
Yars’, players will take on the role of a nameless Yar, who has been brainwashed by the evil Qotile empire to do their bidding. After being shot down and rescued by the ancient and mysterious Bar Yargler, she sets off on a ferociously focused mission, to seek revenge on her former master and his deadly squad of assassins. The bio-technological nightmare of the Qotile home world provides stunning backdrops for players to fly through in aerial combat with their enemy."
GameShard writes: "To be fair, if I was called Yar I'd probably want a bit of revenge, too. Fortunately, the protagonist of Yar's Revenge - a reimagining of the Atari classic Yars Revenge - isn't actually called Yar. She is one. Whether that is actually better or not, I'll leave up to you..."
could be fun. i am sure there are plenty of early 80's gen games that could be reborn.
I played this game a lot on the 2600. I might have to take a look at this for nostalgia value if nothing else.
One of my fav Atari games, along with Berzerk, Moon Patrol, Sword Quest, and Pitfall.
