3 Reasons Why The Next-Gen Wii Isn't Coming Soon

Rumors have been circulating that Nintendo will announce next-gen Wii hardware at the Game Developers Conference on Feb. 28. This has been one factor driving up Nintendo shares recently.

But Citi's Soichiro Fukuda says an announcement is unlikely.

btk4854d ago

Simple reason...
Because Pachter said it will be coming soon. And we know he is always wrong.

teething4854d ago (Edited 4854d ago )

because Wii is still selling well. Only when it's sales sink will they move on. 2012 makes sense for the WiiTwo and 720.

mightyboot4854d ago

I think its possible for an Wii 2 next year.

That seems soon to me.

BiggCMan4854d ago

What bugs me is that people think Nintendo's next console will be called Wii-2 or something to do with Wii. Well, Nintendo hasn't named any of their consoles a "2", and have always made a brand new name for each console. I don't know why people don't look back in history. Why would they start now? I like that they come up with new names every generation. It prevents from saying high numbers like NES number 8 or 9 or 10.

teething4854d ago (Edited 4854d ago )

people call it a "Wii 2" because people like you, know what they are referring to (next gen Nintendo console). This has to do with communication, not with history. The name is obviously a placeholder.

That being said, I think it would be a smart move for Nintendo to use Wii in the name of the next console because they won this gen, so keeping the product name would be of benefit for product recognition... especially if they keep backwards compatibility for games.

@BiggCMan you know we werent talking science here no need to be specific.

2 of the reasons you gave were pretty much the same, and the Kinect one was just foolish.

There's actually more reasons why we WILL be seeing one soon IMO. Like:

1) Reggie said major details of the Wii 2 won't be revealed until the Wii reaches 45 million units in America. It's currently at 40.5 million, selling 130,000 on a weekly basis.

2) Sony and Microsoft released their motion peripherals, so it's time once again for Nintendo to show something for them to copy (lol)

3) This year marks the 5th year of the Wii. Every home console Nintendo has released came out 5 years after the previous one.

4) Iwata and other devs have been giving small details about the Wii 2 since early 2010, like the possibility of 3D and the fact that "it'll leave us with our jaws dropped"

5) A Zedla is coming out this year. A new Zelda game usually marks the end of a console's life cycle.

6) The 3DS is coming out next month. A home Nintendo console usually always comes out a year after the new hand-held comes out.

femshep4854d ago

im gonna have to disagree with number 6 cause they have put out a new handheld almost every year for 3 years now....it use to be like that but that streak kind of ruined it

other wise ill agree

TheMysterion4854d ago

True but the 3DS is a true successor to the DS so it is a new handheld entirely. 6 is therefore right.

Shok4854d ago

^What he said.

Those were just DS REVISIONS. Thi sis the true successor, the next-big-thing, the next-gen Nintendo hand-held.

femshep4854d ago

its a DS with gimmick written all over it its nothing new nothing innovative its a DS

Seferoth754853d ago

Seems someone is unable to comprehend the difference in updated systems and completely new systems.

Whenever someone fails to comprehend the basics, you know its a PS3 owner.

femshep4853d ago

nothing new about an update to the ds.....and for your information i own all the systems including the older ones

ChickeyCantor4853d ago

It doesn't matter what you own.
3DS is an actual NEW device, instead of an upgrade( DS > LITE > DSI > XL ).

You're opinion doesn't matter, cause facts say otherwise.

"3) This year marks the 5th year of the Wii. Every home console Nintendo has released came out 5 years after the previous one. "

They also said they aren't going for the usual life cycle. =)

Relientk774854d ago

Because Wiifit girl obivously lol jk

No, but they did various Mario games, A Zelda game is coming out, they already did Smash Bros. and Mario Kart

Basically they did all their big franchises and games that usually come out for Nintendo systems

Nintendo consoles aren't out for long periods of time

Basically, we almost have come to the end of the life cycle for the Wii

JeffGrubb4854d ago

The ass picture worked by the way.

awiseman4854d ago

Yea I reported it for lamesness however the original source uses it to 0.o

Masterchef20074854d ago

I believe that the main reason is that the Wii is still selling well and the fact that games sell extremely on the wii is important to consider.

Great news it shows that Nintendo intends to continue developing ports of AAA games to its next gen platform

H917d ago

Buying studios from embracer now is a great deal, they must be dirt cheap at this point, Nintendo is a opportunist, they wait until someone fall so they get their best deal

OtterX16d ago

That is some serious brain gymnastics you have going on there. 🤔

H916d ago

I didn't do any gymnastics I can assure you, honestly I don't know why you think that, not hating I seriously don't see why you think that

ZeekQuattro16d ago

Yeah I don't know where that came from. It's rare for Nintendo to flat out aquire studios. Guess they were trying to be edgy but why flex on this studio. 🤣

Kneetos15d ago

At least they are safer from layoffs with Nintendo then any other company

banger8817d ago

I hope someone buys Piranha Bytes, their future isn't looking good right now. I love their RPGs, they're janky as f***, but they have heart and soul.

Relientk7716d ago

Nintendo saw the Mortal Kombat 1 Switch port and were like, "Yeah, these guys are worth acquiring."

You can't make this crap up lol

Profchaos16d ago

Mortal Kombat 1 was never going to port well I'm sure they told wb it wasn't going to work but wb wants that sweet sweet 140 million install base

In the end wb approved the project cleared the milestones and allowed the product to release

SonOfOsiris16d ago

Yeah this guys ported MK11 which is great, Hogwarts Legacy which is great, and MK1 is now ok, play it every day

How Many More Victims, Like Garry's Mod, Will Nintendo's Hurtful Crusade Create?

Hanzala from eXputer: "As Nintendo takes out 20 years' worth of stuff from Garry's Mod, I watch in shock, thinking why it continues to hurt and discourage its fans."

RiseNShine33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

The irony that some of the most disgusting business practices come from companies like Disney or Nintendo, i can't even begin to understand what terrible damage was Garrys Mod making to Nintendo bottom line, imho they're getting pretty nervous about where they're heading in the future, handhelds are no longer something exclusive to Nintendo, from Steam Deck to many others, now you can play the latest games and pay a fraction of the price on Steam sales, so it's up to their exclusives, which just on their own would make hard to justify purchasing a closed overpriced hardware with outrageous price policies (Super Mario Odyssey is still 60 euro 6 years later!), and as a home console they're always underperforming compared to Sony or Xbox.

gold_drake33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

i cam guarantee you, that their exclusives alone is what drives switch sales. they sell in the 10s of millions of copies.

nintendo created their franchises to be sort of nostalgia driven, exclusive only on nintendo.

people will always buy the pkmn games as they always bring in new younger fans amd is family friendly

mario kart, the same thing, mario games in general.

zelda games are system sellers. animal crossing for the casual gamers.

nintendo doesnt need third vame devs essentially. they made sure with the switch and the limitations that they looked more to pc ps and xbox.

its sad, but nintendo is more than fine with what they're doing. they positioned themselves to appeal to the more casual gamers.

but to your point, im not sure why they're doing this rly.

Inverno33d ago

Look at how they handled Nintendo games being streamed or uploaded on YouTube in the past. They killed Yuzu and Citra even when they had nothing to do with ToTK being leaked, not to mention it was basically unplayable on emulation the week it was leaked. Smash Bros tournament, that was fairly recent. They shut down their online services without any care for purchases made. I bought a switch after skipping their last 2 consoles and handhelds but I don't plan on buying anything Nintendo in the future. They take things to the extremes, they legitimately hate their fans. They're honestly right up there with the likes of Acti, EA, and Ubi, only difference is that they disguise themselves as being family friendly all the while being shady.
