Halo 3 drives Xbox 360 sales past Wii, PS3 at retailer

Pre-order and launch sales for Halo 3 on Tues. (Sept. 25) have driven Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 past competitors at retailer Amazon.com.

On Tues., the Xbox 360 Premium SKU ranked at No. 5 at Amazon's Computer & Video Games division, an increase from a rank of No. 7 the week prior.

By comparison, Nintendo Co.'s Wii ranked at No. 7 and the 60GB PS3 ranked at No. 9.

Additionally, all three Halo 3 retail SKUs dominate the top three best-selling products in the division. The $59 Standard Edition ranks at No. 1, followed by the Limited and Legendary Edition at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.

Sony didn't kill SEGA, SEGA killed themselves with the Saturn as it was a 2d powerhouse as SEGA underestimated the consumer demand for 3d unlike Sony with the original Playstation

back on topic yes great games sell systems Halo3 is proving that, not only are the installed base buying it but it's making new gamers buy into the 360 hardware aswell.

However some of the posts saying game set and match to Misrosoft are kidding themselves. Sony have plenty of system sellers on the Horizon

360 won't win because they are only selling in two territories. Wii sells in all three and hasn't reached demand. They also have a game that is as popular as halo and that's Mario galaxy.

The Wii isn't realy in the same war as PS3 and Xbox. Wii = casual market, PS3 and Xbox360 = hardcore gamer market.
And it doesn't matter which console sell well where, it's the world-wide figures that count.

I think Metroid Prime 3 would have been a clear flop saleswise if the Wii were just for casuals but it managed to be the 6th best-selling game in the month of August despite having only been out for 4 days of the month (released Aug 27th).

Historically, tech specs never meant anything to the overall success of a console. The Gameboy, PS1, PS2, and DS are shining examples of that.

The real impact of Halo 3 won't be know until after the Xmas season and selling more system is pointless they can "finish the fight" to borrow a phrase. The problem with MS is they always declare victory prematurely instead of striking the killing blow.

yeah and i think its sad people buy a 400 dollar system just to play one game its not worth it i give microsoft another 3 months after christmas to where the xbox 360 will be "dead" as the ps3 is just getting started and it was never dead and it never will be. just give it time and we will see and in case your woundering i am a sony fan but thats after 4 freakin 360s died on me true story call me a liar i dont care but after 3 smashed 360's i feel a whole lot better. microsoft gave us a toy to break! and thats exactly what i did i broke them well i love my ONE ps3 and its going to stay that way

With the release of Halo 3, the 360 has already met the mass market appeal.

When every commercial featuring videogames, has a person holding a 360 controller... then it's all over.

When television manuals have pictures of 360 in the set-up section.... then it's all over.

When all of your friends own a 360, and the only one with a PS3 trades it in for a 360..... then it's all over.

Amazon best sellers change frequently. If you look through articles here, you'll find hundreds of "PS3 beats 360 on Amazon" "360 beats PS3 on Amazon" as it changes so much.

Halo 3 is released and will sell one or two million consoles and people think its game over for Sony? That's sad. What's even more sad is that they use Amazon sales to justify that.

We will only see a spike in Wii sales if there is enough supply to meet the increase in demand for the console that Brawl will undoubtedly create.

I can foresee ppl putting a negative spin on the fact that Brawl wasn't a huge system seller if indeed Wii sales don't spike due to insufficient supply.

Halo 3 should sell 7-10 million (the franchise has sold 15 million, so 7.5 million per game), with Halo 2 selling more than the origional).

That's a system seller. However, if it does reach 10 million, it will be big news.

If Mario Galazy or Brawl ends up reaching 10 million, no one will blink.

Halo has done well historicly, but Nintendo has its share of heavy hitters, as well.

However, we have to be careful what we draw from 360 sales this month (I mean the official numbers, too, not Amazon numbers), since some people will buy the Halo 360 just because it has Halo attached to it, not because they actually want a(nother) 360.

the real impact Halo 3 will have on sales for several months. Probably not until next year. Regardless, it's going to sell a ton of copies, and it will certainly drive hardware sales. But that shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.

I doubt it, with the special Halo 360.

Thankfully, it won't indicate a long term trend, though, and very few people will make the jump from making pointless minigame collections no one buys for the Wii to making pointless FPS no one buys for the 360.

Nintendo can't send enough Wiis to compete with the increase of 360 sales between the Halo fans that hadn't gotten one that will this month and the Halo fans getting another 360 just because there's a 360 with the Halo name tacked on to it.

The PS3 is the opposite of the PS2 in so many ways.

The Wii is more like the PS2, actually, and the PS3 is looking a lot like the GC (powerful, but no one cares). Only MS has kept things more or less the same comming into this gen.
